$6 Gyro. Skip this. Get the bowl.
    Adam B.

Ate here today because a lot of the Amherst restaurants are closed due to the pandemic's effects. Many restaurants with overhead, such as leases in buildings are having issues finding staff, drawing customers at the universities who now work/learn from home ... or have had to cut back hours because the price of meat is sky high. Because Halal Carts have very little overhead, they can operate more inexpensively with little overhead or staffing costs. The truck is pretty much a one man show. The worker is pretty gruff ... not at all a friendly chap whose demeanor is similar to the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. I will say, he is an honest man ... I overpaid and he called me back to hand me the change I overpaid. Because it's just him on the grill, be prepared to wait a bit. I ordered a lamb gyro and from order to getting it took about 10-15 minutes with 5 others in line. It's all cooked to order on a griddle. For those who have not had Halal food, its a mish mash of meat and veggies, cooked in oil on a griddle, mixed up and covered in white sauce. COVERED in sauce! The $6 Gyro I would not recommend. Within seconds, the pita bread soaked through and turned to mush, making it impossible to eat. The $7 bowl is better because you don't have to worry about a sloppy mess when the pita falls apart. The salty meat goes well with the creamy white sauce. It's probably not as healthy as it looks because its covered in basically a white mayonnaise sauce and served over rice. But damn ... does it taste good! As a benefit, true Halal meat is sourced as humanely as meat can be sourced and the animal was raised/slaughtered relatively painlessly, or so the story goes. I had the lamb, which wasn't quite as good as I had in Greece, but better than most fast foods ... chicken and falafel are also choices. (Or combo) Halal food is on every corner in NYC, in a similar cart/truck, but I had not expected to see (and smell!) a Halal 'cart' in Amherst. Overall, the bowl is the way to go ... and for $7, you'll leave full and satisfied. Parking is metered street parking ... and they do give tickets. Shame on the town of Amherst for charging for parking. I am sure the hassle keeps folks from coming in to visit the businesses/restaurants downtown. The meters only accept change, not credit cards! So many restaurants are struggling/closing ... you'd think they'd offer free meter parking to let the town's businesses get back on their feet.

so I found this food truck and thought I would give it a try, the gentleman was friendly and the halal was amazing. not sure where the food truck is normally but this day it was on boston road and I would recommend this food to everyone.

A delightful taste of NY in Amherst Center. The rich spices on the kebab meat perfectly grilled on a flattop to generate a slight char create a smokiness that's pushes the dish to the next level. The combination of cooking garlic sauce and fiery hot sauce create explosions in your mouth. A generous quantity for an affordable price! This was definitely my favorite place to go to for food in downtown Amherst!

Eating in their food area, making a food order with their cashier, or even using their digital menu, all are friendly, comfortable, and accommodating. They serve halal meats, too, which eases my conscience and my ordering options from their menu, including fresh and crispy french fries. What sets this place apart from a local or fast food burger joint, however, is the love for the experience of their food that Royal Chicken & Kebab offers. Receiving your food order from them is a delight. From the way each meal is wrapped, boxed, or sealed, to the way their burgers and subs look unwrapped. I recall the days I used to enjoy a messy local Philly Cheesesteak sub at whatever local sandwich shop I would be at, where the price wasn't about the love and care specifically, as there needed to be an overwhelming level of meat--like, get yourself dirty on a date level as the wrapper was soggy and flowing with cheese. That is part of a local Philly cheese experience, and here, I felt the love for the flavors brought to a wider community, if not the whole world. Here, our local cooks and chefs still make a sub full of steak, cheese, and peppers, but just enough to fit neatly and appealingly within their foil wraps. Each bite of the slightly warm and crispy bun reveal to me how much I still love the flavors of the experience, and don't need the sub to be my only sustenance. You can get your meal with a side of fries and a drink, for example. Royal Chicken & Kebab has a welcoming atmosphere, attention to detail in the quality of their meals, and has yet to let me down in price or service. I could see anyone, from families, to groups of friends late at night enjoying a meal here. Thank you for your work, Royal!

The atmosphere was lively, the decor was on the heavier darker side, which I actually prefer. Things went downhill from there though. It took over 10 minutes for someone to come by the table, and another 15 to get our menus and finally place an order. It seemed as though there were several staff on the floor, but only one was actually waiting on tables. Our server started out seemingly a bit perturbed with us, but they eased up as the evening progressed. I had a decent glass of red, and we also ardered some non-alcoholic beverages which were festive looking and tasted nice. We ordered the foccaccia appetizer. It came out just shy of burned. It was dry, bland and flat tasting, but heavily salted. I had high hopes for the the Spezzatino di Manzo, a beef stew. It may have been rich in taste at some point, but all I got from it was salt. The beef was edible but not as tender as it should have been, and what few vegetables and potatoes survived were mush or nearly pulverized. There were also quite a bit of chewy gristle. The Roasted Mushroom Risotto was unexpectedly watery and flavorless, almost soupy. The Alla Vodka Fettuccini was cooked properly, and wasn't bad, but was tomato heavy for an alla vodka. The chicken in this dish however was overcooked and dry. For dessert, we got the lemon sorbet which was perfectly fine, but it's really hard to mess up sorbet. I don't know how this place has as many stars as it does. Our experience was an expensive disappointment.

Believe the hype, even if the surrounding neighborhood doesn't seem the most inviting; the food is worth it. We walked in probably fifteen minutes before their closing time, and still we were treated exceptionally well by the owner, he really made us feel at home. My goal was to try as many items as possible so we got the fries, the Israeli salad, the original falafel sandwich, and the lentil soup which we all sampled off each other, and there really wasn't a single item that we didn't love. The star however was the falafel sandwich. It was incredibly flavorful, full of the Mediterranean spices you'd except from an authentic dish that hasn't been toned down to cater to the american palette, and I loved it; every single bite. I have to add that even though I didn't load a picture of it, I had also ordered the house made chai latte which the owner was kind enough to add almond milk instead of dairy, and that too was really good, I recommend that as well. For me, the cherry on top of this wonderful food experience was that they have games; yes like board/card games. My brother and I relived our youth playing connect four while we waited for our food, and I can't reiterate enough what a wonderful experience this was and I definitely plan to return.
