We recently stopped in here for a quick takeout lunch. I was absolutely appalled by the lack of professionalism by the owner. He was making my gyro without gloves (in the middle of a pandemic nonetheless). I told him I was not comfortable eating it as he wasn't wearing gloves and he literally threw the sandwich across the kitchen area into the trash. He started stomping into the back to make another when I said "no thanks I'll pass" and he responded with "even better" and muttered some swear words under his breathe. I was here with my elderly Mother who couldn't believe they way we were treated. I would never recommend this place. All food prep should be done with gloves and the owner was so rude and disrespectful. read more

Low quality food. Chicken gyro made of processed chicken patty cut into strips. Disgusting. Iceberg lettuce for the salad, one olive. $16 plus change and tax and tip. Served on a paper plate with really crappy plastic utensils and three tiny ketchup packets. Don't believe the pictures in other reviews showing plates and silverware. It seems like the owner may be aware of his reputation. We stopped in for lunch and he was there, but we were served by another man, only slightly younger, who seemed to be in training. He was incredibly warm and welcoming. And then there was the food! I hadn't told my 3 teenagers about the reviews, but all three of them were impressed enough to say out loud how good the food was. Today we went to El Greco Cafe this afternoon and was not disappointment. I got a Buffalo Chicken Gyro with fries while my partner had a Classic Gyro. Both were delicious and the wait time was short. We got both of our meals with french fries, which I have to say were delicious as well. The price for the two meals was under $20 which came with drinks for each as well. We enjoyed the staff who greeted us with a smile, and really enjoyed the laid back vibe of the restaurant. The music playing was great and it was nice to be able to look out their gorgeous front window as we had our lunch. Overall, great food and a great restaurant. We will definitely keep going back. read more

I had only a few minutes to grab lunch so I went in here. I must say it doesn't look like a great place since no one was there but I had the best Gyro I've ever had! Loaded with lamb and beef and lots of lettuce and tomatoes . The best part was the generous amount of yummy sauce. Good value and good service. read more

We just recently moved here from San Diego-home of gyros. So we were excited to try this place! The food was ok-not amazing, but not bad. I got a chicken gyro, my husband got the lamb. They placed my chicken in the microwave, which to me was the start of the bad dining experience. We ended up sitting and eating there, which we immediately regretted. The place is not the cleanest-which for a food establishment is not off to a good start. We were halfway through our meal when another couple walked in to order. The owner (or I am assuming it was the owner) starts yelling at the young girl that was working the counter. A good 5 minutes about being lazy and not doing this or that-right in front of the other customers and while we were in the restaurant. We will not be back. I have traveled all over the U.S. and have eaten in so many places I lost count. But there are 2 things I always seem to remember, the great places, and the very bad ones. Now bad is subjective. To me, food can be mediocre. But if the service is outstanding, well then. It's a great place! But if the food is to die for. And the service and staff are shit heads. It's a bad place for sure. Now I am a total Gyro fan and love lamb kebabs. And all the Greek salad stuffs make my little heart flutter with excitement. So when I happen to pass by the El Greco Cafe, I just had to stop in and check it out. When I walked through the door the place was empty of patrons. There was a lady behind the counter bustling about and a middle aged heavy set fellow reading a news paper at the end of the counter. I strolled up to the lady and asked; Do you folks make your own Gyro meats, or buy them pre-Made? The lady stared at me for a moment then spoke What I assume was Greek to the guy at the end of the counter. He turned from his news paper and said; Yes? What can I do for you? So I put my query to him about his meat products. Holy cow, you would think I had just cussed the guy out. He flew into some Greek tirade about how dare I even question him about his meat products. Who do I think I am! What gives me the right to come into his place of business and question him about anything. I quickly replied, I was just wondering if you make your own meats. Because where I come from, they do. He retorted, anyone who says they make their own meats is a liar! No one does! He said a few more crazy things to me then got up and walked away. Bewildered and slightly concerned about my safety, I walked away. I was thinking to myself about the Jerry Seinfeld episode about the Soup Natzi dude that screams at patrons who ask any questions. And if they do, he says; No soup for you! I am never going back to find out either. read more

It's Feta-tastic. Oh no, I'm not making it up...that's their tag line. I saw it on a print ad. Is El Greco fantastic? No. Is it Feta-tastic? Not sure. I suppose it depends on your definition. Are you defining it as the most painfully garlicky experience of your life? Then YES it's totally Feta-tastic!!!! Now, you might be saying to yourself, "well wait Kristen V. I've been to Greek take-out gyro places before, of COURSE they are garlicky." Well I ask you...did your mouth bleed rivers of garlic stained blood afterwards? Wide thick rivers of garlic-stained poison that rotted out the floorboards and eventually seeped into the basement? Well technically this one didn't do that. But it sure did feel like that's what happened. After my chicken gyro at El Greco, I awoke after a night of fitful, garlic- incited feverish nightmares. I quickly brushed my teeth only to discover that my toothbrush plastic had melted down into the shape of a head of garlic. It's mere presence in my home will discourage vampires from entering my home for years to come. And I guess for that El Greco, I thank you. So four days, 703 taste buds, and one marriage later, the garlic taste finally subsided (or at least, I chose to believe it did). It was only then that I could really think about my El Greco experience with a clear mind and heart (like really, really clear--you can now drive a truck through my arteries). I think the best part of El Greco is the charming owner. He chatted up my wife, asking a series of at times prying, sometimes smile-inducing, and often times inappropriate questions about her age, heritage and marital status. My favorite quote from this interaction was "you're Italian? Must be Northern Italy, because you are so very pale. Well, close enough!" Close enough indeed. After 30 minutes and what I think may be a legally bonding Greek marriage between the two of them, we sat down to eat. The french fries were very good, being double fried in what I assume to be a combination of fresh peanut oil and 1960s Greek hair tonic. The fountain soda is sweet and thick. Also, I must say the pita is soft and delicious. I would most certainly buy a package of it if I knew where to get it. El Greco is sort of reasonably priced, kind-of-tastes-good Greek food. And let's be honest, it's all Greenfield has got. So all-in-all totally...Feta-fucking-tastic! read more

Is it the best Greek restaurant I've ever been to? Nope. The take-out comes in Styrofoam containers, and no matter how many times you say "no onions please," the owner will nod his head and heap on 50 more thickly cut, tear-inducing rings. I also can't help but get all Gordon Ramsay in my review and say that microwaving rice in front of customers is kind of a turnoff and doesn't necessarily bring up connotations of freshness. All that being said, the tsatziki's pretty darn good and garlicy, and having another option in Greenfield is always welcome. The food also evokes that comfortable feeling of mall Greek where french fries are a suitable side dish, and you walk away thinking you made a healthier decision than choosing that burger at McDonalds. read more

I eat here often and really like the food and value. I have friends that eat here as well and everyone enjoys something different and no one ever complains about the tasty eats. However we all agree that the man behind the counter can present as angry and rude. I have seen him belittle the workers behind the counter and today I watched him as he loudly and rudely threw out a group of young kids from his establishment because they'd been there too long. It really is a shame that a place so yummy is brought down by a person who lacks in customer service skills. My recommendation is get it to go! read more

Very solid Greek place. A basic menu with some American flourishes. Went with my parents and the spousal unit for a late lunch during a rainstorm while returning from a short road trip to the Berkshires. Noticed it on a Yelp search when we stopped for a break at a nearby highway interchange, and really glad we decided to give it a try. After all, my family is Greek, and we've generally had good luck when we find Greek restaurants tucked away in small cities and towns more or less off the beaten path. Happy to say that our luck held when we found El Greco. My mom had a chicken kabob pita sandwich, my dad had spinach pie and a (real) Greek salad, my wife also had a spinach pie, and I had a very interesting fried fish pita sandwich and fries. The pita was fresh, thick, warm and soft in both sandwiches. Really delicious on its own merits. The fish sandwich (probably haddock) had the excellent tsatziki (yogurt, cucumber, garlic) sauce that other reviewers have remarked on here, and nice fresh tomato and onion slices. The spinach pies were great. Since Kostas, the owner, is from Crete they were made differently than we were used to ... dusted with sesame seeds, and with onion mixed in with the spinach and feta cheese. Then layered between sheets of crispy filo dough as usual. Quite tasty. We also tried a piece of kadaifi (think baklava made with shredded filo) for dessert, and it was serviceable but a bit dry (in retrospect, we should have had some coffee with it). No beer or wine, but a good selection of water, soft drinks and coffee/tea. Prices are great; so no issues there. One note: we'd recommend that reviewers here who find Kostas uncommunicative to engage him in conversation. He's an interesting guy with a lot to say, and he runs a nice place with some sophisticated touches. We highly recommend El Greco, and will certainly return on future trips to northwestern Massachusetts. read more

Huh. My bad; here I've been Yelping for a year, and I've left El Greco out. Let me take care of that. I love gyros and baklava. I *really* love gyros and baklava. (Heck, I like baklava well enough that I've tried in vain to make it.) So I like to find good Greek places. This is far from easy; your standard run of Greek establishments is very much hit and miss, and I've had a few too many gyros that were dry as cardboard, and a few too many pieces of baklava so cloyingly sweet that they'd tear my head off. Happily, El Greco passes muster. It's a quiet, clean, even somewhat elegant place that delivers the excellent gyros and baklava I want. The gyros are *slightly* pricier than I'd prefer, but heck, this is Greenfield, not Athens, and one has to take the rough with the smooth. They're well set up for takeout, which a lot of people do, and which I've done myself -- I work down the street. I admit I haven't tried many of the other options (although as Dan R says, they do good fries), but one option is that you can get chicken gyros, a comfort to my wife, who dislikes lamb. They also have two or three specials a day. One last bit of happiness is that they do soft serve ice cream. Nothing fancy, just vanilla or chocolate soft serve in waffle cones (and they drop a few tiny marshmallows in the bottom of each to prevent leakage, a charming and sensible notion), but there's no other ice cream stand in downtown Greenfield, and my wife and I've come in during the warm months simply to snag a cone. Like Greek cuisine, or simply like to mix your meals up? Go for El Greco. read more

We were looking for greek food and stumbled upon this place. Prices were fair food was mediocre. The falafel was more of a feel-awful but the chicken gyro i had was decent. Service was subpar i asked for a receipt for work and she told me it was too late and when my friends meal arrived he has asked for rice and got french fries. The lady did not hide her sense of displeasure that he received something other than he ordered. Perfect example of the customer being right no longer being a concept in today's business world. read more

The baklava overflows with honey and might be their best dish. Is it a place to take a first date? No. But it is a good, inexpensive option in a town devoid of ethnic food other than pizza shops or Thai restaurants. The falafel is fresh, and the pita bread is excellent. While spicy fries are not "Greek" they sure are worth the extra $.50. The Spanakopita is a heavy, but the stuffed grape leaves are a worthy side order. On the whole it is a good lunch-time grab, a place for easy take-out, or a relaxed meal after a couple of drinks at the Pint. If I just focus on the food here, they deserve 5 stars! I pride myself on knowing the best restaurants to go to in an area, and the first time I tried this place (after living in Western MA for many years!) I was astounded that I knew nothing about it and had never heard of it! Everything they have here is fantastic, I can't recommend it more. However, I was looking over the other reviews to see what others had to say, and just about fell out of my chair laughing when I read the review from Sensai W! I have to say his experience mirrors, if not exactly my own experience, but those of which I have observed others having on more than one occasion. Even though I LOVE the food, I always think twice before going, because the owner (and the other woman who works there), always make me feel as if I am somehow inconveniencing them by coming into their restaurant and ordering food. They usually ignore me for at least a minute or two, even though they are not busy and have no other customers. Then one of them will turn to me and say "Yes??" in that "What the hell do you want?" tone. Then I tell them what I want to order, and hope they don't have any questions, because it can start to feel like I'm on Seinfeld with the Soup Nazi! The owner has never gone off on me personally...I try to be as obsequious as possible with no eye contact, get my food, pay for it, and sit down far from the counter. But I have observed other unfortunate folks, like Sensai W, who have asked one too many questions, or any questions at all and they have left without their heads. I see other reviews where people go on and on about how nice and friendly a place this is, so maybe they have better days, but I haven't seen them. I strongly recommend eating here, quite possibly the best Greek food in the Valley, however you have been forewarned! read more

I love Greek cuisine. I've lived in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, to name a few places, and I think El Greco Cafe in Greenfield, MA, is, if not the best, it is certainly among the best, purveyor of Greek food that I've ever experienced. The gyros, spanakopita, and the really inventive "specials" are beyond scrumptious. The rice served with the platters is enough to humble you and make you grateful. Slightly garlicky, slightly lemon-ish, and totally Greek. Don't listen to other reviews that say that Kostas, the owner, is unfriendly. He's a doll. Friendly and generous and very interesting. There's a photograph on the wall of Kostas, at about age 5, swinging happily between his parents as they walk along. It's classic. I bet he has stories to tell! Go there. Enjoy. Nothing extraordinary, but delicious sidewalk-style Greek food. It's comparable to, and maybe a little better than, similar places in New York. El Greco is one of our favorite places for a casual meal. The gyros are what a gyro should be, very tasty and served on very good pita bread. I particularly like their french fries--not McDonald's style, but tastty and crisp nevertheless. And their baklava and other pastries are first-rate. The prices are very reasonable, less expensive than the usual crop of local fast-food joints. And it's nice to eat at a place where the owner actually prepares and serves the food. I'm Greek, so I'm familiar with Greek food. This owner uses high quality ingredients, more so than other moderately priced, casual dining Greek restaurants. Everything that I've had there is excellent - my favorite items include the spanakopita (spinach pie), olives (wonderful quality), and rice pilaf. My godfather had a Greek restaurant, and made the best rice pudding, but the rice pudding at El Greco is as good if not better. This cafe is a wonderful surprise, and definitely an excellent dining addition to the Greenfield area. Also, the owner & staff are personable, which is always nice. read more

I just had their Steak Pita and HOLY FRIKKEN CRAP. This was awesome. Better than anywhere else. Best lunch i've eaten in awhile. for $8.40 WITH TAX, you get a LOADED steak pita with a huge portion of delicious fries and a drink. I'm a fat dude. And there was so much food, i'm full.
