I wanted to have a quick lunch before I headed to the airport so I decided to stop here for a bite. I ordered the falafel plate and when I got it, I was excited because it looked good. However, when I started eating it, I went from excited to completely disappointed. The falafel was so dry and the rice was not good either. I can certainly make better rice at home. If you want a good falafel, don't go here. Please just go straight to an actual mediterranean restaurant. read more

The Halal Guys - Halal Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

This is a chain and my review is for this location. I ordered takeout from this place. My order was fries, hummus, baklava, chicken and gyro combo platter, falafel. The fries were medium temperature and a bit soggy. The hummus tasted a bit stale and too heavy on tahini. A good hummus should have proper seasoning embedded in it with a heavier on chick pea flavor. The baklava was pretty decent, and I could go for that again. The chicken and gyro combo lacked some freshness to it. Maybe I ordered on a wrong day from a wrong location. Lastly, the falafel was decent- like a falafel should taste like. I have had food from other halal guys. I would definitely go back to halal guys as I love their food but perhaps this location should up the quality a tiny bit to match the brand standard. read more

This place is the bomb I'm so glad they are back!! I was devastated after seeing that they closed all locations in the loop. I ordered this for delivery and it was everything I could ever dream of. I'm a huge fan of Halal Guys and especially the spicy and white sauce. Everyone rating this place low I feel like is comparing it to a 5-star sit down restaurant and that's not what this place is about. They originated from a kiosk in NYC their food is the epitome of fast food. Thus when you rate it to other fast food places this place really shines. The chicken is always garlicky and flavorful, the rice I doubt is saffron but nonetheless delicious and it comes with a bit of lettuce and tomato to balance out the heaviness of the other ingredients. I found the ingredients to be fresh and the delivery was pretty quick. For fast food places, this is one of my favorites if I lived closer I'd eat it at least 5 times a week. P.S. my advice would be to get extra packets of white sauce and sandwich the hot sauce in between: what I mean is first put a packet of white sauce then the hot and finish of with another white sauce on top . Also be wary because the hot sauce will literally disintegrate anything it touches so use at your own risk. read more

I love The Halal Guys. Used to wait 2 hours to eat at the stands in NYC. So excited they're in Chicago. Their hot sauce is amazing!!!!!

I heard great things about the famous NYC location and decided to give this Chicago store a try for lunch. The restaurant is located on Wabash near a bunch of others. There was 1 employee doing everything at once and seemed to be working effectively as well as safely in terms of COVID-19 precautions. I got the chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato, green pepper and white sauce which was inside a pita. The portion size was good, though I think for around the same money Naf Naf or Roti offers a larger portion size. They definitely did not skimp on the meat which was nice, however, the meat itself was not very flavorful, and the wrap overall a little disappointing, except for the white sauce which was awesome. The wrap cost about $9 and while it wasn't terrible, I was really hoping it would be better than average, as there are many other options in the Loop for this type of food. Reading some reviews, it seems that the gyro meat is much better, and maybe next time I will have to try that in the bowl format. read more

Food was delicious. Fast, fresh, full portions. Awesome. Someone didn't pickup an online order and the employee offered ky husband and I the extra order. I thought that was exceptional human kindness and customer service. For sure I'll return read more

I stumbled across The Halal Guys while randomly walking around and am so glad I did, it's delicious! Background: they started with a food cart in NYC that was wildly popular - that's where I was introduced to them - and have since expanded. Since opening a physical shop here in Chicago I've been wanting to try them but never had a chance... now with a location in the Loop it's great! It's a small shop, dominated mostly by the counter serving the food, but there are a handful of tables. I'm not sure what's going on with the vacant "bar" but it should be moved on out for more tables. Anyway, you proceed down the assembly line like you done at so many other restaurants and your bowl/pita is constructed as you dictate. The menu is big, clear, and concise and all the ingridients look as delicious as they taste. I went with a bowl with extra beef (gyro) and a lot of fixings. That first bite brought me back to my days in NYC, posting up on the sideway chowing down. It was as good as I remember. The hot sauce too, just as tasty as I recall - it's HOT, but it doesn't burn for long. The portion is well sized but the price... it's certainly higher than on the street in NYC. Higher to the tune of more than double. This place will be kept in the back of my mind, but it won't be in the regular rotation given the cost. read more

I grabbed take out from here. The service of the staff was ok. I ordered a combination plate with extra meat. When I opened my take out plate, I noticed that the worker didn't give me pita bread with my plate. The gyro and chicken meat were ok. It could have used more seasoning. The red sauces was not spicy and I wished they would have offered me take out packets of it. The regular plate is a large portion, so be hungry if you want to finish it. read more

Regret ever stepping into this place. My family and I were visiting chicago and after a long day of touring wanted to find something quick to eat. We walked to halal guys and received the worst experience we've ever had as customers. If you aren't aware, halal guys has a chipotle style set up where you ask for toppings etc. The man working there has a FOUL attitude and was extremely aggressive when asking for our order and serving our food. Keep in mind that there was NO ONE ELSE in the restaurant. He was very very rude and dismissive to me and my entire family, especially my dad. It was very upsetting and honestly we were all left shocked. Never come to this location!! read more

Delicious. Nutritious. Fast. And you can easily customize your meal. I ordered online ahead if time then picked up in time to make my train. Perfect. read more

I love Mediterranean food. This place was very disappointing though. The chicken was a bit dry and definitely not seasoned well, it was so bland. The flavor of the falafel was ok but it was so dry. The rice had good grain separation and tasted fine. I got the limited time jalapeño hummus as well; I'd rather eat store bought hummus. The workers are very nice and the food comes out fast but you should save your money and just go to naf naf down the street. read more

Ordered the chicken and gyro combo platter. Great amount of food and will definitely leave you full. Not that great of flavor when you eat it by itself. You have to add the white sauce. Makes it 10X better! The best thing is the hot sauce! BEST HOT SAUCE! It will kick your A$$! Order from this place almost every Friday with the office. read more

I went in with very high expectations after all the hype I've been seeing on social media and from friends/family. Not that they were not good, it just wasn't the best like I had expected. The food over all is really good - the chicken is very well seasoned and the falafel is one of the better fastfood falafel's I've had. The beef is not bad but I have had better. The portion size is big - two of us shared a regular platter and still had food left over. I warn you on the hot sauce because it is spicy. I had them drench my food and then guzzled water. Now, the white sauce...OMG...there is no such thing as too much of that white sauce - it is devine! The service was fast and nice. The inside is small so not ideal for groups - they do have some outside seating when weather permits. read more

Rude service. Even worse food. We stopped in before a show at the theater and now we are both sick.

Many reviewers are downing this Halal Guys, and praising the one in New York. Of course it's no comparison, because it's a different city! Many people that live in Chicago or visit Chicago may not be in to Halal Guys, compared to a city like New York! Just because it doesn't have lines outside the door doesn't make it anything less, and giving this business a bad review and low star ratings isn't helping it grow into something similar to the one in New York. Anyway, I visited this place for the first time, and enjoyed it! I based my order off of the guy that ordered ahead of me, because i wasn't familiar with the place, and really just wanted to try a different restaurant. I ordered a small combination platter which i shared a picture of, and there wasn't anything bad about it; i absolutely enjoyed it! I've never been to the Halal Guys in New York, so I'm very well sold on our Halal Guys in Chicago, and will definitely return in the future. read more

So I felt like I was in New York and not in the beautiful downtown Chicago. The place is small and dingy. It's not the greatest place to eat in. When we came in, they told us they had no lettuce or tomatoes That was a bummer, but because we had someone with us that only eats zabiha, we stayed. I can't say the food was not good. Even without the lettuce and tomatoes, I still really enjoyed the food. I have to say, Halal Guys are consistent with their taste. It tasted the same way the first time I had it. read more

We Are visiting from California and came for work trip here in Chicago. We have been craving for real Halal guys food. Found this on yelp, we LOVE there food. Having been to the original New York location, I'd say that this place is pretty good. I probably would have given the original a solid 5 stars - because there's just something that can't be beat about waiting as the guys expertly grill up your meat right in front of you at the cart. This place is good but falls a bit short. The meat was pretty much all grilled when I arrived here and not piping hot. It just doesn't have the same feel as the original. However, if you put that white sauce on anything....I'd eat it. Overall, very very generous portion sizes and just a solid meal. I'd come back! read more

Sure, this is a knock-off of a knock-off, so as it goes when you filter the original to the point where you have 200+ locations live or in development, you are going to lose some quality. The Halal Guys have lost that quality. Given what I had today, it would be stunning to imagine standing in a line in downtown New York for an hour to buy one of these gyros, since this was just average food served at the second Chicago location. Bottom line: check this place out, get a gyro with a ton of the white sauce and a little hot sauce, and tell your friends back in NYC that you've tasted the magic. Then go to Falafel & Grill in Wicker Park, Taza in the Loop, or really any other reasonably good-to-great gyro place and spend a little less cash on the same stuff that everyone else makes better! read more

TIP: This is NOT the original Halal Guys. Set your expectations accordingly BOTTOM LINE: Eh...not bad but there are so many other competing food choices, I would probably defer to one of those. WHO: party of 2 WHY: lunch WHAT: (Deets) Falafel and Gyro combo...D-R-Y and nit as well seasoned as the NY locations WHEN: Columbus Day 2017 WHERE: take away HOW: bike/ public transportation, Parking is extremely limited BATHROOM: gender neutral WIFI: yes DRESS CODE: as you like SERVICE: great on the line...ok at the register read more

I was SO happy to find my favorite NYC cart food vendor in downtown Chicago!! Every time I travel to NYC, I make sure to go to The Halal Guys corner and get a mixed meat meal...now they are much closer to home. I introduced 4 friends today to this place and they all loved it too! I like the mixed meat with all the veggies, rice, lots of white sauce and I had them hit the meal with 3 stripes of the red hot sauce...the guy behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy! Mind you, most people who want the meal a little zippy get just one line of the red hot sauce! It was HOT and awesome!! I was only able to eat half as the portion size was generous! I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner! Large serving was $8.99. read more

Tale of hot sauce.... here is a short version. I like this place, saw a new location and I walked in. I had dinner plans later that evening so ordered only a small snack and some baklava. I asked for a pkt of hot sauce, and knowing how amazing it is i asks for another pkt for a friend so he can try it. Cashier asked the cook to hand over a second pkt and the cook decided to ask for more money! Hummmm even the cashier was shocked and asked her why?? She said i already gave one so second is extra. Well, this was a bit embarrassing. I was already done with my transaction, and she would have to swipe my card for fifty cent. I was a bit offended with this embarrassment so asks if the cook was the owner, she said no, I asked If I can speak with owner she said no. I asked if I can see the menu where this extra cost is listed, and the answer was NO! Clearly the cooks here are making-up their own rules. Eventually the cashier intervened and hands me a second pkt. She informed me there is no extra cost for hot sauce! And although they discourage me from writing this review I think the owners should know why their customers are giving them bad reviews. What's next?? Cook will make her own price for extra napkins, and forks? read more

The food and service are why you come here. Who needs ambience when the rest is so good! Awesome in NYC and everywhere else I've had it. Go heavy white sauce! read more

The Halal guys are spreading out! And I'm so happy they are. I had a chicken plate delivered from here and alongside the plate they sent me 2 packets of white sauce and one packet of hot sauce. If you want to feel decent while eating this meal... DO NOT LOOK AT THE NUTRITION LABEL ON THE BACK OF THE WHITE SAUCE.. I was actually appalled. I know that I should be reviewing the quality of food, but the amount of fat in that one packet of sauce was crazy. So I opted just to put one packet in, instead of two. My sister put in some hot sauce and I recommend just skipping that. Not only is it extremely hot- it ruins the taste of the meal IMO. As for the actual dish, the taste was pretty good and I would probably order it again when I'm craving middle eastern food. However the dish was pretty dry since I only put in 1/2 the standard amount of white sauce. TL;DR Yummy, but unhealthy. Not sure if the taste is worth the unhealthiness read more

Sorry, I haven't read any other reviews since I've eaten at the NY location on several occasions after a night of debauchery. That said, this was no where close to what I remember eating off the cart in NY. Sure, it was a lot of food for the money but it lacked flavor. The rice was a little dry, the pita cold. Sadly, I don't feel the need to go back to any of the Chicago locations and look forward to my next NY trip. read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would. My family and I had a terrible experience at this restaurant with angry staff and disgusting bathrooms. I would never recommend this type of treatment to anyone and will never be coming back. read more

The food might be Halal, but the people in there with many layers of harem behaviors! The restaurant was very dirty and unorganized! I wouldn't waste my time there! It's not quite as good as the original in NYC, but very tasty nonetheless. Be careful of the red sauce, it is super spicy, but it is also really delicious, so if you can handle it, get a cold beverage ready. I came over for the grand opening today 9/16 and I would call it quite a success! I have heard about the Halal Guys ever since they came to the Gold Coast via NYC last year...once I saw they were opening up a location near my job, I was excited as I would finally have a shot to try this very popular establishment. I was the 8th person in line which meant I would not wait for too long. I ordered the chicken & gyro combo which is basically chicken and beef in an aluminum pan along with rice, lettuce and tomatoes and tahini sauce along with whatever additional toppings you any want...I went with jalapeno. Took it back to the office and destroyed it as it was pretty good. Once I was almost done, I squirted a packet of the hot sauce on my food and it was quite spicy and almost ruined the meal. After finishing my meal, I told my buddy it was really good! We walked around for awhile which means I walked off my food and was ready for another bite. This time around I got the chicken & beef gyro which was even better than the platter...good stuff in this joint..seriously!!! read more

We're Buffalo natives, so we rarely get the opportunity to eat halal. We experienced the Halal Guys during our last trip to NYC and we've been craving it ever since. Fortunately, the Halal Guys opened up two storefronts in Chicago. We were able to visit the location near Millennium Park during our most recent visit. The food was exactly as we expected (combo platter with lots of white sauce) and really hit the spot. We were able to take it to go and hop right on the train back to our hotel.
