The famous Halal Guys from New York finally made its way to Chicago. Everyone I know who had ever eaten at Halal Guys had nothing but positive reviews. The restaurant is extremely small. There is the open kitchen, counter, and space for 3 people to dine in. I decided on pick up the small gyro/chicken platter to go. The platter comes with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, and pita bread. I requested the sauces to be on the side. I enjoyed the platter, primarily due to the famous white sauce. It made the dish flavorful and creamy. A word of caution, the hot sauce is extremely spicy and I usually love spicy food. Taste a little bit before you decide to put the whole packet on your meal. Overall, I enjoyed my meal but I wasn't extremely impressed. I thought the food here was just average. Without the sauces, the meat would had been overly dry and lack flavor. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but if I'm in the area I wouldn't mind getting another platter. read more

The chicken was only mildly flavored, the rice had no flavor at all, the hot sauce was too hot, and the white sauce was pretty good, but nothing to write home about (I mean, its tahini sauce, really). I went there during there grand opening on saturday. The line was ridiculous waited more than a hour. But it was a grand opening so it was fun.. got the string bag as well as the fan. The inside was very small had 6 square tables so not much for sitting down to eat inside when it's packed. For a gyro and chicken platter it was approximately 9 dollar much more expensive than when I had it at New York. I didn't enjoy it much this time maybe due to the fact it was cause it was grand opening but the chicken was pretty dry even with the white and red sauce. I enjoyed the flavor of the gyro meat way more.. Overall I will be coming back to give it another try in the near future read more

Ordered the regular half gyro and chicken for 8.99. Food was great and portions was just the right amount. Ask for additional white sauce on the side. The space is small so be prepared to be cramped. I heard about the original place that started it in NYC where you have to wait in line for over an hour to even order your food. So I was really excited to try this place when it came to Chicago! The place is set up for you to order, get your food and leave. This is not a sit down restaurant but there is space by the window for you to eat while standing. When we got there, there was a line but I think there was a line because the workers were reallllllllyyyy slow. We knew this would happen because this place is still fairly new and the employees are still trying to get the hang of it. We ordered the combination platter with all sauces on the side. You get 2 white sauce packets and one hot sauce for free. These were more than enough. Anything more than that, there will be a charge. Be careful with the hot sauce! It is extremely hot! And I'm not the one to say this because I love spicy food but this hot sauce is FIRE! The food is so good and it hits the spot! THE WHITE SAUCE IS EVERYTHING!! There is so much flavor and you just don't want it to end. I went with my friend that has been to the original Halal Guys in NYC and waited hours for. She said the food in Chicago doesn't compares to the one is NYC. But it is still pretty darn good! I'm craving it again as I am writing this review. Although it's not the same food stand, this certainly helps fill the void. I went for the Combo Platter with extra white sauce on the side. Don't hold back on the white sauce -- a true MUST HAVE. I don't really understand the hype around this place. I've had several different plates, and it seems like they put so much lettuce on the plates it's more like a salad. The falafel is good , but relatively small. I think for the genre of food there are plenty better places in the city . So first time trying this place and it didn't live up to its hype. The service provided at this location was good and it looked pretty clean. We ordered the chicken platter with rice, pita, salad and white rice but the rice was hard and grainy. They definitely needed to cook the rice more. My only advice for even hot sauce lovers: get the hot sauce on the side. You won't even need a whole packet before you're mouth is on fire. I even shared 1 packet with my boyfriend. The Division street area around this restaurant is really nice, and I like stopping by here when I'm in the area. The interior of the restaurant is really small; there is no seating area, only a small ledge for standing and eating. Their menu is really simple; you choose either a bowl or wrap, and you choose either gyros, chicken, or falafel. The toppings are lettuce, tomatoes, rice, white sauce ( thick, seems like mayonnaise), and red sauce (REALLY spicy, handle with caution!). I've tried their chicken and falafel rice bowls. The regular sized rice plate is very filling, and I usually do not finish it in one sitting. The food is really simple and flavorful; however, I don't like how pricey it is. It comes out to about $10 with tax for a regular rice plate, which is definitely pretty expensive. Overall pretty good, quick Mediterranean food, but at a pretty high price. read more

Although that is better than 53rd and 6th where your only option is to stand or sit on a curb. All in all the way it works is: 53rd and 6th is the best food in terms of flavor and portion size. East Brunswick NJ, has the best and cleanest location with refillable drinks. Chicago has better lamb and chicken. But only cans of soda and their rice is suspect. I've been here about twenty times since they opened. (It's two blocks from my building.) It has gotten progressively worse in nearly every way: the food, the service, the floorplan, everything. This "no cash" nonsense is the final straw. The gyro and chicken are now so thoroughly overcooked, it has eliminated nearly all flavor. The employee turnover is so high that new people are literally training nonstop at all times. How awful must the management must be, that they cannot retain anyone? Speaking of management, I once saw three people huddled over an iPad trying to figure out a delivery order. A team this technologically unsavvy doesn't suggest smooth operations for a store that now refuses simple currency. There was not a lot of choices on the menu. Me and one of my friends decided to share a regular combo and add an extra dollar to get the falafels. There was so much food! Lots of grilled chicken and gyro meat! The grilled chicken was very flavorful so was the gyro but they weren't too salty at all.
