I was so excited when they first opened one around the chicagoland area since they are more known on the east coast, new york to be specific. by far, the most popular one customers usually get is the platter. The platter usually comes with either chicken, falafel, or gyro. Topped with green peppers, lettuce, onions, and tomatoes and also, a bed of rice. Best part of ordering the platter is that you can have two proteins! the two proteins that I usually go for is the chicken and gyros. They also include slices of pita bread with your platter. The sauces are amazing but be aware of their hot sauce! I am a lover of spicy food but one drop of their bad boy red sauce will literally leave your tongue numb and it will ruin your meal unless you know for a fact that you have high tolerance for spice! This place is horrible, I've been to the original halal cart in NYC and there's just something very off about this place. The servings are smaller and also they DO NOT let you pour your own white sauce and they come in packets now which you must pay for separately so it doesn't feel the same nor taste the same. they are very stingy with their pita bread as well, giving only ONE SLICE per plate. literally the size of a tortilla chip! This is nothing compared to their unsanitary ways and just disgusting habits of having their back door to the kitchen WIDE OPEN leading to a rat infested alley. It is completely horrendous and anyone who has seen what goes on back there will definitely not be back. I will be uploading more pics soon to add to my review for proof of how grosse this place is. If you want better middle eastern food, head to Devon. this is just a cash grab for tourists. **UPDATE 9/16: Steven, as a manager/owner, I think it would be more professional of you to address the situation and maybe hire more staff to clean or more space to store your food. Service was great, the girl at the cashier was so nice and friendly, as was the guy who helped packed my meal to go; I would give them 5 stars alone for their service :) HOWEVER, as for the food; I'd say it was a solid solid "A-OK (3 stars)". Important stuff: - Get here for lunch time as opposed to dinner or a late dinner; first because there is no wait, and second, because this location seems to close earlier then other locations. - Portions are very generous; both the small and the regular size; especially with the food being quite heavy and filling; I would say 2 girls could probably share a small combo plate even - Price for the combo is around ~$8? The half Gyro/half Chicken over rice with extra white sauce and a hint of red... that's the only thing i get when at the 53rd and 6th stand in New York. When I'm in NY/NJ, I would make it a point to stop here at least TWICE during my weekly trips. I may be more of a hard core fan than others but without trying to be as biased as possible I would objectively say regarding the Half Gyro/Chicken platter: 1) Tastes exactly like the one in New York 2) Has slightly more tomatoes/lettuce than in NY 3) They really give EXTRA white sauce (my friend commented on how generous and patient he was when we pestered him about giving extra, in which he replied "hey, it's all about the customer, if they want extra white sauce, we give all that they want" so dont be shy) 4) For $2 more they give you extra meat. (the problem is the box is already filled to the brim and the lid only closes "flat top" style, exactly like in NY, so it's fairly difficult to close/handle once you get all the sauce also on it also). I ordered my friend a regular half/half and i myself got a half/half with $2 extra meat. I looked carefully and he gave about 2-3 small tong scoops extra, from eyeballing it, it was about 40-50% more meat than the regular amount, again not exact but i was careful to analyze haha. We went on Grand opening day, and again the line was LONG, like we waited around an hour, but for a diehard fan like me it was WELL worth it. I will definitely be a regular here. The interior is pretty small, I didn't count exactly but I saw 1 table for 4, and 3 tables for 2, but they can all be pushed together, all in 1 row, so probably seats 12-14, I THINK, pretty good estimate though. There were many sitting outside along the street eating as well, similar feel to NY. All in all, GREAT food, great service, owners are awesome as well. read more

The wait was longer than the opening day, kinda cray! I think it's because there's no limit on how many orders now. Food is still solid. If I can remove 1/2 star from the original 4, I would because the older male owner is very defensive and reluctant to take any sort of feedback. When I told him from my observation, that the staff is seriously in slow motion and had none of the NYC hassle attitude, he just said they are tired and this and that but have 2 shifts that started at 5am. I was there at 4pm, if you have 2nd shift in already- that means it's been less 3 hrs and it's already at turtle speed. I heard so much about the halal guys so I was excited to try on my visit to Chicago. I was SO disappointed. The rice was hard and grainy. The meat was just salty and the veggies were so lame just tomatoes and lettuce. Unfortunately I ordered with postmates and they forgot to put ANY sauce on it so the whole thing was dry and bland. If you want to feel sick, eat here. I ate a chicken sandwich from this restaurant. About 20 minutes later I got terrible stomach pains and cramping and was terribly uncomfortable. I have a very strong stomach which is why I was surprised at the immediate reaction I had after consuming this food. I called the manager who did not seem to be concerned, nor did he make a report. He told me I could call the manager on Monday! Two days later? Which I thought was very concerning because I thought they would be concerned about the health of their customers, and the safety of their food. Especially if I took the time to call. I observed a huge pile of chicken that was laying on a grill, (the grill was turned off)....in a huge pile....like 20 pounds of lukewarm chicken. Sitting on a grill/ not even being kept warm by any warming method. Then, they have several large containers of mayonnaise sauce that are not kept refrigerated or cold. Sitting on the food prepping station, just warm mayonnaise being poured over people's sandwiches. Totally unimpressed with the way in which their inexperienced manager handled the report of my violent reaction to their food. Unfortunately, a total lack of knowledge and experience. The food is absolute shite. Pack up your business and go back to NYC. We have plenty of really awesome Chicago based restaurants that offer awesome food that will not make you ill. If this is the best that New York can offer Chicago in terms of food.....I feel really bad for you guys. Absolute shit. If you want halal food that's served on a pita, go to Old Jerusalem in Old Town 5-7 minutes away walking. 2-3 minutes away by car. We ended up wanting more sauce after eating halfway, and they were nice enough to put some more sauce on for us after. If you want packets of sauce on the side, you have to pay for it. So good thing we were eating in the store. I always get the chicken platter with extra extra white sauce and a few drops of hot sauce. The platter comes with rice, pita, lettuce, and tomato. Mix it all together and enjoy! Comparison to the NYC cart: Pros - Credit cards accepted. Indoor seating. Small and Regular size platters to help with portion sizes. Good service and friendly staff. Cons - Staff adds sauce for you, so give specific instructions on how much white sauce or hot sauce you want. I would NEVER wait 30-90 minutes for this platter. It's just not worth it because you are paying $8.99 for not that much meat. It looks like there is a lot more meat in the gyros sandwich, I might try that next time. I got the hot sauce, I didn't think it was as spicy as other reviews but I have a higher tolerance. The white sauce was definitely good. There is no dining tables, so don't plan on eating here.Amazing service. Super kind and relaxed workers who even joke around with you. The drinks are super expensive! $1.50 for a can of pop, and $1.80 for bottled water?!?! 7-eleven down the street sells them for half that price so why don't they try to compete with their prices. I was looking at what to eat when my trip to Chicago was approaching. I saw that Halal Guys had their grand opening not too long ago. So I made sure this was included in my plans. After lots of sight seeing, 4pm had hit and I worked up an appetite. The line was very visible, about 10-15 heads from outside the storefront. I kept peeking in through the window because I was so excited. About 8 people can be inside, so you can imagine how this looks like and how long the line is. I waited just 20 minutes. Ordered the chicken platter while my partner got the gyro platter. Because we were tourists and did not know a spot we can go eat nor can just take it to go, we were lucky the window table was available. You can sit about 6 heads here. And mind you, it doesn't feel tight in there. So, you order and keep walking a few more steps where they pack and bag your food. We both chose sauces on the side. Glad we did, cause I did not need all that much and lucky for me, one white sauce bag is now sitting in my pantry :) they lack organization, which is totally understandable. But, when you're the halal guys, it's okay. The food, delicious. The white sauce does make a difference. But the meats are tender, flavorful, juicy, completely well seasoned. I especially love the rice, it's unlike anything I've tried at the various similar foods I've had. And the hot sauce, it is spicy and as a spice enthusiast, I was satisfied with a drizzle. I love Halal Guys! This location is always my go-to because it's right off the train near me. I'm taking one star away because there's no seating but I usually take the bowl home or to somewhere nearby so it's not too big of an issue. The food here never disappoints. I always get the combo so you have both chicken and gyro! I also add olives and peppers which cost extra but add a good kick to your bowl. You can also ask for BBQ sauce instead of white sauce. But I wouldn't sleep on the white sauce - it's so good and addicting! Be careful of the hot sauce! Even for spice lovers this sauce is a doozy. I can usually only handle a couple drops. Parking isn't too bad around this area but if you go at night, there are always lots of drunk people walking around since there are lots of bars around this area. If you're lucky, you can snatch one of the loading zone parking right in front of the store. The restaurant doesn't have seats anymore and it's more of a grab and go or stand and eat awkwardly at the counter next to the windows... The lines during the winter months are much much shorter than the lines during the summer. The portion is big enough for 2 servings/2 meals. I ordered the chicken and gyro platter and it was absolutely delicious. I LOVED how the meat was chopped into bite size chunks making it easy to mix with the rice and other ingredients. Everything was very fresh and seasoned well (although I slightly prefer the rice flavoring at some other Middle Eastern restaurants. My friend actually preferred Halal's rice. Just a preference thing I guess). The platters come with two really big packets of white sauce but one packet was more than enough for me. I suggest only taking one to avoid unnecessary waste (unless you like your food swimming in sauce). Beware of the hot sauce though. It's CRAZY hot. Get it on the side just in case. I noticed some other reviews saying the rice was undercooked and chicken being dry. I'm assuming they worked out those issues as I didn't have the same experience at all. Honestly, everything was cooked really nicely. Yes, the line was long, but with such a small kitchen located in a busy area, it wasn't surprising. The workers were definitely moving. I recall the platter size to be way larger, with a thick layer of rice, heaping layer of gyro and chicken, and little bit of salad. It was so huge that you can share it. And you can put as much white sauce as you want. And it's way cheaper Plus some of my gyro pieces were burnt charred crispy and that kinda ruined the meal for me. Overall, this place does have the taste, but it doesn't have the same portions, the same value, or the same experience. And thus only 3 stars. The staff were friendly and efficient...that's a plus cuz NYC stand guys are too busy to even talk to you, and notorious for being rude cuz they just can't stop and talk. I ordered Halal Guys via Postmates to avoid waiting in line- but it wasn't that bad of a weather day. First, it's not always easy to find Halal food so to be able to get it quickly is a plus. I am also excited that they are becoming more globalized! I like how you can add sauces, have a mix of meats, and you get greens, protein, and you can keep it healthy if you like. The falafel and gyro is not the best I've ever had- but tasty enough for the price and to get it again. Placed an order through Uber Eats and I am shocked to receive 6 slices of STALE baklava cheesecake. I could tell these were not fresh as soon as I removed them from the bag. I took one bite and it tastes as horrible as it looks. Hopefully they will learn their lesson considering I received a full refund from Uber Eats. We came here on a Monday afternoon for lunch. The line wasn't that long compare to the Grand opening day. I think we were in line for 20 minutes. When we get to inside, I notice the cashier is a bit slow on the register. And the workers were not as fast as the halal guys in nyc. Anyways, we ordered 3 combo chick/gyro platter to go. I wanted some white sauce on the side but they said they will charge me extra. When we get home, we immediately chow down our Food.it was so good as I remember and the spicy sauce was sooooo spicy as I remember. The only difference I would say was they didn't chopped the meat finely like nyc food cart. But overall, we were very satisfy with the platter. Must go! read more

Line was long as expected. However, the CRUNCHY rice was totally unexpected! Horrible! New York location is better. This location had good chicken, but the rice was really disappointing. Will probably not go back. I will not wait in line for crunchy rice. Staff is nice! Well job on that end. read more

Food is pretty good here.They seem to be pretty popular.There is always customers when I've been here.And their prices are reasonable.Its close to my work so I've been coming in more often.Their gyros are delicious.I've also really enjoyed their lamb platter.Im sure I'll return again since they are so close to my job.Service is good.I can be in and have my food in about 10 minutes.Do recommend.They also sell baklava which I have yet to try.Falafel is next on my list definitely.They also have tables to dine in as well as an outdoor patio. read more

Fyi: no one orders from you on uber eats of doordash because you don't give the option to edit add ons such as lettuce, olives, tomatoes etc. and you mention that you don't honor notes on orders. many times i've wanted to do large deliveries at events or work but didn't feel like the hassle. it may be saving you money and tome to force everyone to get the basics but i haven't ordered here in months because of that issue. read more

Located within like 50 feet of where Division gets a wee bit sketchy like all the clocks have been switched from AM and PM to BC and AC- Before Crack and After Crack. Much like the seinfeld "soup nazi" episode there is a sign that basically says please wait your turn or something to that effect. I find the staff very nice and helpful as opposed to the guy on seinfeld who made his own soup. This is done NY style like they have in Greenwich village minus the food stand. Yes you can get shwarma on a cart at 2AM if you venture off to Bleecker and McDougal. If you have lived or visited NYC you will know what I mean. I had them mix the chicken and the lamb. The food is superb as usual, chicken sandwich is my go to. The only reason this place is losing a star is because they constantly forget to add the sauce packet in the togo bag. Shame on me for not checking this last time but that makes it 3x in a row I have had to sadly eat the sandwich without the white sauce! Even though the line is long, it is definitely worth the wait! The combo platter of gyro and chicken is my favorite, especially with the white sauce, mix with some BBQ sauce on the top and a touch of red sauce, that's heaven! I am glad The Halal Guys is in Chicago and they are here to stay. read more

I first had halal guys in NYC. This is nostalgia! Pretty on par in my book and love the quick service and large portions. Two servings between the three of us was plenty! The red sauce is SUPER spicy and I have a decent spice tolerance coming from Spice nation of China (Szechwan/Sichuan), so ask for packets/on the side. White sauce you can generously spread that around. I love the simplicity of the halal guys and how TASTY and filling it is!!! No real seating in the place itself so my friends and I took it on the go and went to sit around a "park" - just on the street with some benches around. Good fuel for more walking around town! And friendly on the wallet :) Definitely check them out if you've never been to NYC for the original or even if you have been to NYC, you can get a little fix of it right here in Chicago! read more

Waited in line for 15 hours on Opening Day to get a taste of this famous chicken and rice. Even a small portion is extremely filling and can go for two meals. The chicken was well cooked, flavored, and tasty, and the gyro meet was ground up like a seasoned beef rather than in gyro strips. The white and red sauce additions were tasty, and the red sauce had a definite kick. The faint of heart should go light on the spicy red sauce. The meals come with two slices of warm pita bread. This dish is based not just on the chicken, but on the rice. The rice is tasty and also very greasy and has a nice warm red tint to it. I think it might be tossed in red palm oil for the color and flavor? This would be the greatest of drunk food. However, since I am pushing over 30, I would not want to have too frequently- you can tell it clogs your arteries and it not meant to be eaten for freshness or flavor nuance. read more
