Ever since I tried Halal Guys--the original cart in NYC, I've been crazy about them like my wife said I would be. When I found out they existed outside NYC, especially in Chicagoland, I was ecstatic. So far I'v been to two different locations. Yes, I agree they're not as great as the OG one, but I guess I don't necesarily compare them apples to apples since one is a cart, and the others permanent establishments. There's always gonna be something about walking around the NYC then stopping to get yourself a nice warm plate of gyros vs going thru a drive-thru for your meal. I'm not saying it's okay to have quality difference between the two, but there's got to be outside "human" factors that contribute to your experiences. I honestly don't understand all the knocks on these secondary establishments. I think they were all just as good as the NYC cart. Of course if they had food out a bit longer in the salad bar, it'll taste a little worse, but for the most part I think they were all pretty spot on. I don't know about everyone else, but for me the highlight is always the white/red sauce combo. There have not been any other Mediterranean places that serve their food with hot sauce other than THG, which is why I keep craving them even though there are plenty of other places with just as good of food if not better for some. Still, I'm a fan of THG and it will always have a warm place in my heart. That is, unless they REALLY REALLY mess up... hoping they keep things consistent! ;-) read more

I loved Halal Guys when I first tried it in Chicago. I was excited to see there was a nearby location in Countryside. Ample parking. The only thing that sucks is trying to get out with all of the frequent flow of traffic. They could use another stoplight over here. Service was very friendly and helpful. I had the combo with beef gyros and chicken. Meat was warm, not hot. Both kinds of meat had flavor, they just needed to be fresh. The pita slices were also lukewarm. Rice was okay. The NYC food was so delicious I couldn't shake the flavor and saw that there was a location in Chicagoland area ran by same company. It just didn't hit the same. I think those guys in NYC need to make a trip to this location and give training on how to achieve the flavors. I SERIOUSLY doubt I return to this location. I was greeted as soon as I walked in, my order was made quickly & the restaurant was clean. This location usually only has a few people eating inside each time I've come here. I gave it four stars because of the prices. I've been here several times picking up orders when I do food deliveries but this was my first time eating the food. I ordered the regular falafel platter which was $13.99 & added hummus for $1.49 plus a bottle of water. My total was $19.35 to me this was high for rice, lettuce, tomatoes & falafel. I'd have to say, this chain has come a long way since I first tried them at 7th Ave in NYC about a decade back. I few touches here and there have been tweaked. I still adore this chain though. But only because we have none in Detroit. Anyways, we ordered 4 combo platters off the drive through with everything on it. Two of them will serve as our road trip back to Detroit meal. The other two,, is none of your business. Everything is very good, although I don't really know all about that green peppers deal. But I'm sure its not because of the location. It's because someone from higher up prolly thought it was a good idea. Don't get me wrong. I still adore a proper combo platter. Just hold the green peppers next time. I loved this fast casual Mediterranean spot! It was my first time visiting one of these locations and I am glad I did! I order a side of falafel which was delicious. Hot and seasoned well! Then I ordered hummus with pita and a chicken and gyro combination plate which was delightful! Also ended with the house-made baklava which baklava- how can you ever go wrong? It was delish perfect balance of sweet and I will definitely visit again. The establishment was clean, the food was hot and fresh and the customer service was great- the 2 workers on shift were nice and informative. They do have a signature white sauce that is a cross between taziziki and ranch. I wasn't a huge fan of that, I like my traditional tazizki sauce but I won't hold that against them! The Halal Guys is a halal fast casual restaurant franchise that began as a food cart on the south-east corner of 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. They first opened for business in 1990 and 25 years later they now have several US Locations and 4 international locations. That being said, I had pretty high expectations going here. I have never been to NY but it seems as if their food would be pretty close or on par with food found in Chicago, which is a huge compliment. Upon entering the location we were greeted by the friendly cashier. Their were multiple people behind the counter creating orders, everyone was friendly! The place is bright, spacious and very clean. The food here is pretty pricey, depending on what you order. I opted for a falafel plate, mostly because I'm a pescatarian, because I wanted it with Hummus, I ordered a large plate. That ended up not being a good idea, because I pretty much paid an extra $1 just for fillers. When you order a falafel plate, you get mostly fillers, which is disappointing due to the price. The large plate is full of lettuce, tomatoes, rice and about 4-5 falafel balls. That's not a lot of food for almost $10. In addition to that, if you want hummus you have to pay extra. I believe it's around an additional $2.99 for hummus. Overall I had an ok experience here, I have no complaints other than the prices, oh yeah and the Spicy hummus! I wasn't overly pleased with the spicy hummus, it was too SPICY for my taste. The falafel balls weren't bad, not the best I've ever had but they weren't bad. I may try them again one day and try the regular hummus and a smaller falafel bowl, who knows. I have so many options in the area, only time will tell. read more

Given that I had already been to the original Halal guys cart in NYC, I was sort of nervous to try this place. Nevertheless, the chicken plate with rice and pita was delicious!! The food tasted pretty much similar to the original food I tried in NYC. I liked how I can get my food here and sit and eat there inside the restaurant vs having to stand outside on the street to eat it. I enjoyed it a bit more because of having that comfort. The people working here were really nice. They gave us as much extra white sauce and red sauce as we wanted. They also sell white sauce here for anyone who wants that for reasonable price. OK, so I was in the suburbs helping somebody buy a car and we hadn't eaten lunch so we did the drive-through at Halal guys. I love Middle Eastern food. I love the flavors and the sauces. This food was not very good. I ordered the beef gyros sandwich with onion and tomato and sauce. The person told me the sauce was on the side when she took the order and I thought it was odd, but I had to follow the directions. It came on a huge piece of pita bread that should have been wrapped around the meat and vegetables. It was not because the pita was dry and seemed like it had been sitting out for a long time. It didn't bend anymore it just broke off. The meat was not seasoned well and so it tasted nothing like gyros. The tomatoes and the onion were chopped fine, which made it really hard to eat because on a piece of pita that won't bend , onions and tomatoes fall out with every attempted bite. The sauce came in a big packet. Unfortunately the sauce is bland, but I had to use some just to add some moisture to the sandwich. I ate about a third of the sandwich and threw the rest away. it cost me nearly $15 for the sandwich and an unsweetened iced tea. Definitely not worth it. read more

Ordered delivery from this place and by the time the food arrived, items were missing and/or wrong. Normally I love halal guys and have tried it in NYC and in CA (where I live) but this location did not do a great job in fulfilling my order. It was just a disappointment because we ordered this as comfort food for a family member having a bad day. Looking now at some other reviews, this seems not to be an isolated incident and I know things get busy but I think they need to take care of all customers, those in person and those who have orders delivered. The staff is super friendly compared to Skokie. I like how they come to your table too to ask if you need more sauce, because who doesn't want more white sauce?! The food is always great. It hits the spot each time. It's comparable to the food trucks in New York. This location also has a drive thru service but I always dine in; it's always a chill vibe in here and super clean. Not exactly the same coat of paint but if you've tried them the menu isn't going to look that different. menu is tad simpler due to less options (sauce,sides,toppings ) I know there are people that are going to be all "not authentic" blah blah blah, but the combo plate I sampled made me come hear the next day. The staff was AMAZING nice!, Instead of that tired "welcome to McDonald's can I take your order." It was like thanks for coming in. Any questions just ask. want to try a sample of this or that... no problem. Staff came out several time to ask if we needed anything and if we wanted more sauce etc Although I liked my Combo, felt the pita portion was a little "small". I recently paid almost $50 for 3 platters/bowls filled with a lot of rice and lettuce with a handful of tough dry chicken and some hummus. They did give us several pouches of a really good white sauce, but even that didn't help. If you like this type of food, 7 Gates across the street is MUCH better tasting and a much better value. I was very disappointed and don't see a reason to go back after this most recent experience. This was dinner time, and I was the only person in the restaurant. Went to halal guys Country Side, IL. 5621 South La Grange Road, Countryside, IL 60525 2/6/23 at 9:45pm: Through the drive through ordered a small combo platter no salad. I get home and see I only got chicken no gyro in my platter. I called the store at 9:55 telling them that my order was given to me wrongly. The man said "okay too bad" and hung up to the phone. I wouldn't have made a big deal but i will be leaving reviews of this experience everywhere I can. I need a refund immediately otherwise I will dispute this charge. Great quick and easy food similar to Chipotle (serving style). I've never been to the original stand in NY but I can imagine it's really good out there! I wish the chicken was more moist but I was content with the chicken and gyro combo platter. The hot sauce is extremely spicy and a packet will do for most people. This location in Countryside is the best! Always go through the drive thru and service is fast and always greeted warmly and I think, with a smile! I used to go this place at three times a month but now it's changed. The meat portions are less but the combo gyros and chicken meals prices are up, and I get it with rising cost but now I diffidently feel that you getting less protein (meat) but paying more for the meals. This place is terrible, save your money! With the mixed reviews and my love of kabob plates this was a solid maybe on my list of things to try. And try I did, I ordered the large chicken platter, 2 falafel, a side of hummus. The falafel was fine, nothing special, it was just ok. The side of hummus ($3), it was bad, the flavor was significantly worse than any of the standard grocery store tubs that one can buy. For $3 it should come with more than one pita. The chicken platter, now for $10 I expected a few solid chunks of grilled white chicken breast, a big scoop of rice and a salad. What I got was a bunch of dark meat that looked like it was poured out of a can on top of the rice that was not even good on its own and the salad, boy the salad, couldn't even give me any feta, olives or dressing?? After a few bites of chicken gristle and what was poorly stripped thigh meat I had enough, I threw away $8.50 of the $10 platter worth of ingredients. It's clear why they give you 3 gallons of the white sauce, it's the only way to mask the flavor of the rest of the garbage they've just given you. Always a classic. Combo platter (chicken and beef) with extra extra white sauce, 2 stripes of hot and extra barbecue sauce. A regular platter is enough for 2 people as it comes with pita bread as well. I sampled the spicy lamb as well, which was really good, but I prefer the beef. read more

They're finally open! I've patiently waited, and I'm so happy I did! I wanted to dine in, but after working a 13 hour grabbing and going was the way to go. Upon entering, staff were very friendly and welcoming. They have one vegan/vegetarian main entree option, that being falafal. I went with the sandwich, rather than the platter. For $8.22(tax was included) I received a warm and fluffy sandwich. The pita was oh so fresh! Falafal was very fried, but that's the way it should be. The girl working behind the counter didn't know what ingredients were in basically anything. I felt like for a new restaurant it should have been much more clean and better lit as well. We happened to be in the neighborhood and saw that they finally opened! When I went in just to get a menu it's was completely dead in the restaurant but clean! The two ladies behind the counter omg! They were so sweet and friendly, coming in to just grab a menu became an experience! Before I knew it one of the adorable ladies made me a sample plate and I fell in love!
