Overall, i liked the platters, but i feel they skimp on the meat. The chicken is juicy though, but i feel it needs a bit more flavor compared to how i used to have it. Their baklava is a bit too sticky for me and not as flakey. however, the staff is really nice and hustle fast to get your food to you. I ate outisde and 2 times the staff came over to check on me and offer me more sauce---i really thought they would forget about me. A lot of us Newark-ers were pretty excited for Halal Guys to open. I waiting about a month after it actually opened to try it and it's honestly nothing special. I tried to be as unbiased as possible going into this and not really take the other reviews into consideration until I'd tried it for myself. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad. But it's not great either. One thing that I liked is that they offered a small size; it was perfect for one meal and I didn't have to deal with leftovers. What I didn't like is that the small size is pretty expensive (over $8.00). In fact, I think that this whole place is overpriced, especially judging by the fact that you have to pay for extra sauce. While I understand that halal meat is more expensive than regular meat, I don't think it warrants charging this much for simple chicken and rice. The food itself was decent and it's not as greasy as most other spots that serve similar dishes. The menu is relatively limited in that you have a choice between a sandwich or a platter. The platter come with rice and a salad along with your choice of meat (or falafel) and you can choose to add peppers, olives, hummus, etc to it. Be careful with the hot sauce, especially if you're not used to spicy foods. Tried for the first time today. Pros: super fast, friendly delivery, all items in the bag. Cons: I ordered chicken and falafel but received chicken and lamb. Baklava piece SUPER TINY for pretty much $3. After removing most of the lamb the sandwich was overall very tasty and filling. I would order again in the future but will be sure to stress that they give what customers actually order. Taste just like it was in NY! I used to wait on those long lines and boy was it worth it! For the amount of food, it is so affordable... Be prepared for left overs! I was so excited for this joint. I was so disappointed when it opened this afternoon. Summary: OVERLY priced compared to the original one in NYC. CHEAP on the pita and sauce portions. They don't honor the coupon as it reads or count your purchase as a reward. Worst of all, you WILL NOT get the amount of hot/white sauce you want without paying. 1. They gave out $5.99 coupons for a regular size. The receipt shows at 25% discount and they charged me $6.59. After tax it was about $8.00 (Honor your word) 2. They are so CHEAP about the sauce. Unlike the ORIGINAL spot in NYC, you have to basically beg to get your platters the way you want. The original place, you just go around the cart and dabble away with the sauces. Over here you have to shell out additional money for tiny sauce packets (Stop being stingy) 3. They gave me about 4 pieces of pita bread. The original one gives about 1/2-3/4 of the entire pita bread (This is scarps) 4. They advertise the hell out of their rewards program, but of course you can't sign up and use your purchase towards it (What kind of rewards program is that?) Verdict: instead of paying the $20 toll or taking the train, I will go here if am hungry. Otherwise, this is SO NOT worth the money. I would rather make it a point to stop by the real deal the next time I am in the city or go to the East Brunswick one. At least that way I can be satisfied. I had the chicken and lamb combo with two extra falafels and a side of babaganoush. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING. The food in its entirety lacked flavor. The babaganoush was extremely bland and needed salt. I think that since I've been so spoiled by the famous cart in the city, their brick and mortar franchises (at least this one in Newark) are kind of a letdown in comparison. Yes, the food itself is killer~ Halal Guys food seriously beats any other similar place in terms of quality~ but what they've gained in fame and subsequent franchising, they've lost in charm and the extras that really made it special to begin with. One of the things that I liked about the cart was the seeming informality of it all~ when you ordered a chicken and rice, they'd just scoop up a good amount of rice and put on a good-sized scoop on chicken and voila, you'd have a sizable lunch that you'd need to finish in two sittings. There was also a sauce station that you could put however much or little white/BBQ/red sauce you wanted. It was all so informal but quick and well-done. In contrast, their brick and mortar location was way more exacting with how much they gave you, plus you can't apply the sauces as you want, they either do it for you or they give you to-go packets. I dunno, these franchises really take away from a draw of their carts~ the charm and informality of it all. Halal Guys just doesn't seem like Halal Guys anymore. I didn't know what to order or what to expect, so my friend was the one who ordered everything to put in our platter. Let me tell you, our meal was less than $8, and it was so delicious. Everything tasted super fresh, and it was just extremely enjoyable. They have a few seats so you can sit down and eat. You can even sit outside, because they also have outdoor seating! This is just a short review because there was not that much to write about, but I tried Halal Guys for the first time and I must say that I was not impressed. I would much rather go to the food truck next to the Rutgers-Newark soccer field. I ordered the Combo Platter with chicken and gyro, and they tasted kind of bland to me. Our original choice for lunch was closed so my co-worker and I happened to stop in. He had been here before on a couple of occasions. It was lunch time on a Monday so there was a long line and most of the tables were occupied. One thing I noticed immediately was how loud the place was. It wasn't because of the customers but more of the acoustics. There was a language barrier with the staff and the staff rushes you along. I had the chicken and beef combo platter which came with came with rice, pita bread, and a small salad all encompassed. I wasn't impressed with the portion size. I had the hot sauce and I must warn you, it's inferno hot. I couldn't enjoy my meal because my mouth was on fire. I can tolerate heat well but not like this. This place will thrive because it has a very loyal following and an occasional subpar review won't hurt it. It's located in downtown Newark and there isn't much parking nearby. I love the food here and always have however I had an experience today that I hope isn't regular for their management to do. After I made my order for a combo, I notice a manager come over and snatch the platter from the person serving me. He then proceeded to try and weigh the platter to make sure it was at the appropriate weight to be sold at. Now I understand there may be rules that the workers have to work under back there but that was degrading to the young girl and a bit crass for me to have to witness. It's great not having to drive all the way to NYC for my favorite gyro platter. They make the same great platters, if not better. They charge about $11.39 for a regular size platter, and it does not even fill you up, and you end up staying hungry.
