Pretty disappointed by this location. It's been more than one occasion thay we have had a meal here...customer service is typically meh but food is usually good...that changed today. After being spoken highly of due to friend's experiences in NYC...I was very excited about this place coming to the neighborhood. About a month ago they had a 1 year anniversary event of their opening. They didnt specify the hours the promotions were available...so one would expect that it ran all day...not the case. They begrudgingly gave us a buy one get one free platter cert. I tried to use said cert today...the "shift leader" that rung us up refused to honor the promotion stating that it expired...so we missed it by a few days. As a franchise...wouldn't it make sense to just honor the deal and keep customers happy? Apparently not here. The shift lead said if she called the owner he would say no. I blame it on her inexperience in customer service...but upon reading other reviews...on their FB page etc...this particular location might just suck. They offered my husband tomatoes...they didn't offer me any as I was tending to my son and talking to the shift leader/cashier about the promo. The chicken was dry...and so was the rice btw. The food isn't exactly the same as the NYC street carts, but it's comparable enough. I visited on Tuesday, 9/6/16 at 2pm. There was about 20 people ahead of me. Though the line wasn't ridiculously long, the workers aren't efficient enough. Took me 30 minutes to get my food. CONS 1. At $8.50 plus tax for a regular platter, the food is overpriced. 2. The workers move too slowly. But I know they're trying their best doing a difficult job so I don't want to criticize them too much. 3. Workers made a couple mistakes. Forgot my pita bread and mixed up my platter with another customer. 4. They don't let you put your own sauce. Especially with the hot sauce, which is very potent, you want to put the amount you feel comfortable with. This also contributes to longer delays on line. 5. They charge for extra white sauce: 50 cents. I find this incredibly stingy. I've been to other Halal places that have an open condiments station with the white sauce in a mini fridge. 6. Very limited seating. I believe there's only 3 tables plus window barstools. 7. Chicken is dry, but I always felt that regarding the original NYC cart too. PROS 1. It exists. Probably won't be frequenting this place often, but it's good to know it's around. 2. Again, while not the exact same as the NYC carts, it still tastes good enough. read more

I was so excited to try this when it opened up near my work. I had heard great things about it for years. After I got the chicken and gyro platter, I was shocked... what was the hype? Everything was somewhat bland. The only thing that gave it any flavor was the sauces. I was extremely disappointed. Time passed and my husband said he wanted to give it a try. I decided to give this place a second try, hoping it was just an anomaly that day. It was not.. the second time was the same. My husband agreed that it was flavorless and bland. We asked for the white sauce and they drenched the top of the platter. Again, the white sauce was the only source of flavor (although, not even a good flavor at that.. tasted basically like ranch). I will not be trying it again. I still wonder if its just this location.. if not, I am definitely beginning to question my friends' taste buds. read more

This place is outstanding! Great value for your money, platters are very filling and delicious. One of my favorite spots to eat in Springfield and Alexandria. Is this as good as the Halal guys you find in New York on a food cart? The answer to that would be no, but this place is still decent. I got the regular combo platter with extra white sauce (a must) and the regular combo is a lot of food. My eyes were bigger than my stomach and I should have just gotten a small. I had the beef and the fries. The fries were a little small of a portion for $3.75 and they were frozen ore-ida fries. The meat was super alright. The hot sauce is spicy like actually spicy. The white sauce is a good balance for it. All and all its abundantly average. The portions are pretty small. Exact same offerings as the NYC cart, and exact same great life-changing taste. The only difference I found was that they offered 2 sizes. The small is actually the same size as the cart, while the regular is a little bigger. The platter also comes with fresher iceburg lettuce and even tomatoes! Not that any of that adds nutritional value.. but it does make me feel better as I eat the white and hot sauce with a side of rice and gyro meat. Even the regular side doesn't feel like it's filled to the same amount that the NYC cart is filled too. However, I ain't driving 300 miles and getting 10 orders of halal guys to put in my freezer anymore! I'll take the $9/regular combo platter if all the original flavors are there, and they are! We also decided to eat in -- there are about 15 seats, but if you eat in, the awesome worker comes around with white sauces and tops you off accordingly! We will definitely be frequenting the halal guys until the one on H st is opened! FYI we came Sat around 7:30, the line was out the door and to the end of the halal guy shop. It took about 25 mins for us to get to the front of the line and order our food. When we left the line was pass potbellys, so hopefully that'll help you gauge your wait. read more

Let me start off by saying the food is really good. I've been to the original NYC location and this is comparable. The service was fast and efficient for their grand opening. The reason I gave this place one star is for one particular reason in which I'll explain below. My friend and I arrived here at 1 pm opening day (9/2/2016). The line was long but there was at MOST 60 people in front of us. We wanted to support Halal Guys in their grand opening and saw on Facebook that they were giving shirts, cups, and sunglasses out to the FIRST 1000 customers. We were in line until roughly 1:45 until we were able to order our food.My friend and I wanted a t-shirt and figured that they were going to give us t-shirts after we got paid for our food. I got to the end of the line and asked the cashier if I could get a t-shirt and she said to ask the guy outside working the DJ booth. Not a problem, I paid for my food and went outside, I was going to ask him any ways because I saw that there were boxes next to him but I wanted to wait until after I bought something. I go out there and ask him for a t-shirt and I told him that the lady inside instructed me to ask him. This is what he said "We ran on of t-shirts" and then he pushes the box to verify that they're empty. I can clearly see the tape on the box and that it hasn't been opened. It even said "GILDAN" on it. Pretty much he straight up lied to my face. I did not want to make a scene or anything so my friend and I just left. That was 45 minutes to serve at most 60 customers and they opened at 11. There was no way they ran out of 1000 t-shirts by 1:45. Even if they did the box would empty but it wasn't It still had tape on it. In the future I will be visiting other places because I know their employees are trustworthy and honest. read more

I'M SO HAPPY HALAL GUYS HAS COME TO VA! I go to NYC frequently for this (meaning a 4 hour drive), so I was very pleased there was one just 30 minutes from my place. My boyfriend and I waited in line for about an hour (totally worth the wait) before we got food for him, myself, and our siblings. Unfortunately, when we got to the register to pay, my boyfriend realized he left his wallet at home. I had them try to type in our credit card info since I have it memorized, but they were not able to. Saad and Khurram were nice enough to take down our number and let us come back the next day to pay. Although we got busy and came back two days later, they were extremely sweet for letting us do that when they could've easily had us go home and come back to pay. I asked for no rice and received rice anyway. I was hungry but I had to spend time removing the rice from the dish ( food allergies). When I placed my order I entered the instructions on how to get in the building. The driver said that he couldn't get in the building. I was in my night clothes. I had to get dressed and leave my apartment to meet the driver to get my food. What is the purpose of the convenience of delivery if I have to get dressed and leave my apartment to get the food? Came in for the soft opening. The sitting area is fairly small. There's 2 tables off to the left side and a fountain drink machine next to it. There's a bar area along the window with stools for you to sit on. You place your order, they prepare it and then ask you which sauces you want on it. A white sauce, bbq sauce or the red sauce which apparently is very spicy. We ordered the chicken and gyro combo. The small is 7.89 and the regular is 8.89. We got a regular which was actually really filling because I shared it with someone and we still couldn't finish it. Also they messed up our orders and only put chicken at first but they quickly rectified it and added the gyro meat on top of it. So we actually ended up with a lot of meat. The chicken seemed a little dry and not very flavorful to me. The gyro meat was much better. It all came on top of a bed of rice and salad. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. There wasn't much of a line when we first got there but later on a line started to form. I think they did a very good job keeping it moving. This was my first time trying this so I'm not entirely sure if it was comparable to the NYC location. I always hear people raving about it. If I come back I'll most likely just order a small and do it without the chicken. Definitely a nice place to grab a quick filling meal that isn't overly expensive. read more

Couldn't get the white sauce because it's not vegan, so I had to get the red sauce for an authentic Halal Guy experience-bad idea because I can't handle spicy, so I definitely should have gotten it on the side. The workers were really nice, and offered me the tahini sauce after I told them I can't eat mayo though. As far as overall taste, spiciness aside, it was okay. The falafels were good, and I liked the pita alongside the rice, but like I said in my review of Amsterdam Falafel Shop, there's so many places to get falafels now. Me and hubby always loves Halal Guys! The best gyro platter in the planet and ive tried other places but nobody beats them ever. One beef/chicken platter comes with yellow rice, lettuce and tomato. The meat was cook and seasoned, but the winner is the white sauce. I skipped the red ghost pepper sauce cuz it was way too spicy for me. Whether in food cart or store, the taste is always consistent. OK, I moved to Arlington from NY in February, so it has taken awhile to find halal that equals NYC carts. I've tried Kabob places and they just can't do it. They don't have the magic sauce. I went to the Metro Cart in Ballston, which is good. The bums in Rosslyn close at 4pm, which is stupid, so I can never get there. One of the great things about NY halal is it's 24/7. Anyway, my wife and I ride to Springfield (about a 15-20 minute drive) at least 2-3 times a week just for the Halal Guys. I have been to the original several times in NY, and this is pretty close. My fave halal cart of all time is at 115th and Broadway in NY. No one can match them, in my opinion. This Halal Guys is good, and it will fill the need for you transplants. Again, it's not the same as NY halal for one main reason (this is the same reason it got 4 instead of 5 stars from me): THEY DO NOT HAVE LAMB. Yes, I know. Depressing. They use beef, as does NY Halal Guys, because Lamb is too expensive. But most halal in the city, and my guys on 115th, use lamb. So when you order your COMBO OVER RICE, you get chicken and what they label "gyro" meat. It's BEEF. The beef is greasier than lamb, so your halal will have a different texture now, due to the grease in the beef, so it's definitely not the same. Having said that, IT'S STILL AMAZING! The blessing now is that they sell the white sauce and the red. I always have some on hand, because if I don't feel like driving far, I'll go a half mile down the street and get lamb and chicken kabob with rice, come home, chop up the meat, chop some lettuce, onion, and tomato, mix it up, and top it with Halal Guys sauce.
