VA Kabob House is my favorite go-to Afghan kabob Place, it's better service and better food than Flame Kabob, both located in Springfield, Virginia. The workers at VA Kabob House treat you as a dear friend, not just a customer. I was able to interact meaningful, although briefly with the workers and owner there, they are super nice and good people. Needless to say, all their food is perfectly seasoned and flavored, not too salty. The lamb kabob is very tender, has no meat odor at all, it just melts in your mouth, it's that good. The eggplant side dish is also delicious, and is freshly made, as all of their side dishes. I particularly enjoyed the rice, which is served very warm, the brown spice on the rice is perfectly pungent, it bring out the flavor of the rice. I wish this restaurant is nearby so I can eat chicken or lamb kabob everyday! Prices are reasonable. read more

Chicken lunch kebab special was just as large and tasty as last time. Plenty of food for two meals. The gentleman gave each of us in our party of four a small cup of coup which was very tasty. The gentleman who took our order was very nice and he also was the one who prepared it, and everything was done well. This place is easily accessible from Springfield. It's more of a takeout place but there are around ten chairs if you want to stop by and eat. The Super Combo has Lamb, Beef and Chicken. Lesson learned. Stick with what you know, and you can't go wrong. My wife and I hadn't visited this place in a year. The good news is that Ali is still the owner. The bad news is that when he's away, the food isn't as good tasting. Come to find out, he's off on Sundays, and we visited on a Sunday. We tried a new dish instead of our usual gyro sandwich and lamb chops. We shared a Super Jumbo Kabob. It had Quabili Palau and Chalau mixed together and one skewer of each: lamb, chicken, and shami. It was supposed to be served with meat sauce. If you look at my photo, you'll see that the meat sauce was missing. It came with a side dish, Afghan naan, and two sauces. One sauce was green and very spicy hot. The other was white and tasted like mayonnaise with seasoning and herbs. It wasn't tzatziki sauce because it didn't have yogurt. Unless it's a new version because the tzatziki sauce we had before didn't taste like this. The sauces were edible and forgettable. 1) Quabili Palau and Chalau Chalau is an Afghan rice dish made of basmati rice, oil, spice, and salt. The spice is usually cumin. The Chalau here is made with brown basmati rice instead of white. It had a light curry and nutty flavor with a hint of sweetness and saltiness. Quabili Palau was raisins, onions, spices, and sweetened carrots added to the Chalau. It was rather sweet. The taste grew on me. 2) Lamb Kabob It was marinated and broiled. One end of the kabob was cooked well, and the other end was somewhat dry. It had light flavors of garlic and spices. The spices were mildly hot with flavors like paprika, coriander, cumin, and ginger. It was okay. 3) Chicken Kabob It was chicken breast meat that was tender, moist, and flavorful. The chicken was coated with a red marinade that tasted like tomato, turmeric, paprika, salt, and pepper. The flavors were balanced and worked well together. It was cooked well except for some charred edges. This was the best kabob. Everyone there who was eating a kabob had this one. 4) Shami It was a mix of ground beef and minced beef that was lightly seasoned with spices. It was described as ground beef, but that's not what we got. The beef was easy to chew but dry. It had very light flavors of cumin, clove, garlic, salt, and pepper. The blend didn't help the savoriness of the beef. I don't advise getting this. 5) Sabzi This was our side dish. It was supposed to be fried spinach. It was boiled. The missing fried flavor was disappointing. It was better before. The spinach was in an oily sauce that had light flavors of coriander, salt, pepper, and garlic. The sauce was good. 6) Afghan Naan It was much larger and thicker than other naan. The crust was crisp, and the crumb was fluffy, soft, and chewy. It had a toasted flavor with a hint of salt. The service was polite, responsive, and helpful. The dining room and restrooms were clean and somewhat worn looking. They have self-serve plasticware, straws, napkins, and green tea with cardamom. The tea was free. They are located in a shopping center with free parking. The food wasn't very good except for the naan and chicken kabob. We'll return on a day when the owner is here, and then I'll write an update. The old adage is true. When the cat's away, the mice will play. read more

A great place for Halal. Wife and I had the Gyro sandwich (K.5). It was delicious and the portion of the wraps were generous in size. The price was very reasonable compared to other places serving the same dish which were $3-5 more. The service was excellent. The staff were very friendly and enthusiastic. The restaurant is cozy and welcoming to dine inside. Overall, it was a very satisfying experience that met our expectations! The restaurant patron suggested next time we should try one of their kabob plates. We are certainly looking forward to our next visit! I was in the mood for kabobs after running errands and Yelp said this was one of the better places in the area. It's funny I use to eat next door all the time and never realize this was here. Behind the unassuming storefront is a great restaurant. At first impressions, I thought it would be okay since it was empty besides another person, but it was too early for dinner. The guy at the front was polite and nice. He even offered a bowl of soup each while us waited for our carry out! That chicken soup was surprising, with a good kick of spice! I got the combo kabob (beef and shami) and the chicken seikh kabob. It definitely was one of the better meals in the area. The beef chunk kabob was okay; it was a bit tough. The shami and chicken seikh was really good. I was most impressed with the chicken one. I usually avoid ground chicken but my fiancé wanted to try it. I ordered a sandwich and I'm only in the area sometimes on the weekend otherwise I don't eat Afghan food and the sandwich in traditional Afghan bread was very endearing since most other places use pita bread. Glad to see an Afghan restaurant authentic to its roots, that made me happy. 5 Ambiance- 1 It's designed very functionally. There's tables and chairs but I wouldn't say any effort was made to make it look nice. I went to the ladies room to wash my hands the soap dispenser was empty and there was a bottle on the sink but that was empty too. No paper towels either so I don't think the bathrooms are regularly checked or even cleaned. Service- 2 I wanted mantu but was told it was not available, which is disappointing. I ordered a Greek feta salad and the name says feta in it but I was given basically lettuce and a few pieces of red onion there wasn't any cheese. I wish I didn't pay for it. We were looking for a kabob place near us and found this place in yelp. The reviews looked good and the meal options were also a lot. We ordered the chicken kabob, combo kabob, gyro with naan and rice and gyro and chicken kabob salad. The meal took about 15 minutes to arrive. The meals were all large and filling. They were perfectly cooked and the flavor was right. Everyone enjoyed the meal thoroughly and we had left overs for tomorrow. The best meal in my opinion was he combo which came with lam, kobideh, chicken and you can pick a side of lamb sauce. Beware of any kabob places that use RED DYE food coloring in the kabob. This is known to be harmful to your health just so they can present a good looking color on the kabob, they should replace red food coloring with just turmeric. Then place is not clean and looks like it's outdated but it's cheap so I guess you get what you pay for here. Service is just at the counter and pretty simple. read more

I ordered the lunch special - ,chicken kabob with rice, salad, bread, and one side. I opted for the chick peas. When I was given my order they included a small container of their chicken soup to try. It was very good. Flavorful, slightly spicy, and contained chunks of white meat chicken. I enjoyed the soup so much I bought a container to go. The meal was very good. The bread was light and warm. The chicken was tender and well seasoned. I wish there had been at least one more piece of it, but it was the lunch special after all. The chick peas were good too-seasoned and tender. The sixth installment of my "Kabob Kompendium" profiling various joints in the DMV region that can be broken down into a set of common criteria: 1)ethnic focus 2) kabobs 3)side dishes 4)rice 5)condiments 6)bread 7)dining experience 8) unique dishes 9)x-factor(s). 1)Ethnic focus: Afghan Springfield has been blessed not with one but three Afghan restaurants and in terms of level of dining I would say this is by far the most casual (good for lunch or takeout) compared to Afghan Kabob(more sit-down) and Afghan Bistro (date-worthy). According to prior reviews, this establishment was previously in Annandale but relocated to Springfield. 2) Kabobs: the meats here are marinated and grilled to succulent sublimity and jaw-dropping juiciness, one of the highlights of the meal 3) Side dishes: usually one has the choice of 2-3 side dishes whereas here one can choose from at least 7-8 so I'd say if variety is the spice of life, this place has an entire spice rack. 4) Rice: probably the one factor that could be improved upon; usually the rice accompanying Afghan kabobs is slightly buttery and savory usually due to the fact that it is steamed with some sort of broth/stock, but the rice here is missing that glistening sheen and almost has a faint hint of sweetness which is not as pleasant as other places I've frequented. 5) Condiments: a yogurt based sauce that has hints of mayo and a jalapeno based yogurt sauce that can probably be spicier. Not the best but gets the job done. 6) Bread- very generous portion and good exterior crust with fluffy center that needs to be enjoyed immediately 7) Dining experience- casual almost to a fault since it's in an old strip mall with no frills in its decor 8) Unique dishes: they make a house-made chicken soup that used to be complimentary at the original location but not sure if that's still the case but the plethora of side dishes ranging from sautéed pumpkin to curry chicken definitely adds a nice dimension to mixing/matching your proteins. 9) X-factor: the exceptional customer service, variety of options of side-dishes, and generous price point make this hole in the wall worthy of multiple repeat visits if you live close by or need a delicious work lunch option without breaking the bank. read more

I came in here recently for dinner. I got qabili palau ($13.99), naan ($1.85), cholle chick peas ($5.25), and some juice ($6.50). All of the ingredients were fresh and tasty. Qabili palau is steamed rice and lamb served with caramelized carrot shreds and raisins. This is the go-to Afghan recipe if you have not had Afghan food before. The rice, salad and side dish was good. I got the Lamb curry and the potatoes. The potato side dish is definitely one of the more popular ones and tend to run out if you go later (we got lucky and got some of the last bits of it during dinner time). The Beef Kabob was just OK for me. The meat a bit chewy and it was hard to bite just half a piece. It wasn't as tender as the chicken though it was well spiced. I highly recommend the chicken. This place gets PACKED quickly. People call in orders and then they come and stand in line. It could go from 2 people to like 10 people in just minutes. They typically say you can pay after you eat but if you happen to be in when it's not busy, I recommend that you pay while you can because it could become super busy just a few mins. later.
