Another place that has trickled it's way down from New York. Though I don't feel that this place has the same atmosphere as the carts do in New York. The food is just as good. Plus, on another side note, the service here was AWESOME. My boyfriend and I were visiting the NOVA area for the weekend, and had an urgent, late night craving for Halal Guys, since now we don't have to go all the way to NY to get it. Finding out that this location closed at midnight, we rushed over there. I usually feel bad going to restaurants right before they close, but they didn't mind. We wanted to get 3 combination platters (one was for our friend... we're not THAT fat). However, they informed us that they only had enough rice for 2 platters (barely had enough for 2). Coming in 10 minutes before they close, I wasn't surprised or even mad; we just got what we could. The employees must have felt bad for only being able to make 2 platters. So they LOADED up our order with extra meat. And I mean, probably 3x what they usually give. On top of that, they gave us the rest of the pitas they had and also free drinks. They were more than generous enough; I would have been happy with an extra piece of pita bread. So friendly. Anytime I have halal guys, I always get the combination platter, since i like to try a little bit of everything (beef and chicken). The food is always well seasoned and delicious. I've never had Halal Guys before, but I kept hearing good things about the place from my girlfriend. So I decided to try it since I haven't cooked for the week. Located in Springfield plaza with plenty of parking. Had a nice interior with some space if you decide to dine in. Service was excellent! The guy who served me was very polite and fast. I ordered a regular combo platter. The chicken and beef was amazing! I love the seasoning and the meat was very delicious with the rice. I added hummus to my platter and it did not disappoint. The original Halal Guys is definitely 5+ stars. This place has to settle for 4 in my book. Still delicious and you still get a good amount of food for your money but just not the same as the cart in NYC. The meat and rice aren't as hot or fresh and they give you a lot more salad than they do in NYC. I love the fact that they are in NOVA now though. Since opening, I've already been a handful of times. I've heard about The Halal Guys but had not yet had the chance to try their food until recently. When you walk in, you are immediately hit with the smell of spices and meat cooking. Ordering is fairly straightforward. You have a choice between platter and sandwich, pick your size, and your meat. On this visit, we both ordered platters. My husband ordered the chicken platter while I opted for the combo (chicken and gyro). We both got tomato, lettuce, rice, white sauce, and harissa for the husband. Both orders come with warm pita too. Everything is warm and the white sauce is like magic. It just binds everything together; it's so good. One bite and I understood why The Halal Guys were so successful. The food is really good and really affordable. My gyro and chicken were cooked perfectly and well seasoned. This place is so delicious! I'm so happy that they brought Halal Guys closer to me. However, you don't get the same experience from the original Halal Guys in New York. You don't have the crazy long line with everyone waiting to get their food from the cart and then you don't have the experience of taking your food to a corner and stuffing your face, but you still get the same great taste. The staff was friendly and it was more of an assembly line style where you can ask for different toppings and sauces. You have more options in comparison to the New York location with personalizing your food. I got the combination. It came on the bed of rice and a side of lettuce and tomatoes. I asked for raw onions, which added a nice fresh crunch to my chicken and rice. I wasn't a fan of how they put the sauce on my dish for me. I like when I have the freedom to squeeze all the sauce I want... BUT i guess it was better that they did it for me, so I wasn't a fatty and it prevented me from squeezing the whole bottle into my chicken and rice. They have the same white sauce and BBQ sauce. I got both sauces on my chicken and rice, but I did not get any of their hot sauce because I always regret it when I put it on in New York. I'm pretty sure it's equally spicy. Like most people that are hyped about Halal Guys, I've never tried it, so I thought I would try the combo platter (Chicken and Gyro, rice, lettuce,tomato,pita, and yogurt sauce). I went for the smaller size which came out to be $7.96, surprisingly that platter was the perfect size for my appetite. The only sauce I dared to try was the white yogurt sauce, I really recommend the white sauce since it is a great pairing for both the Gyro and Chicken. One thing I really appreciated about the platter was that all the ingredients played an important part in the flavoring. Why was it so different? Took me a few visits to realize: it's cause I'm sober. The food's just underwhelming. It's not bad, just.. boring. Also the last time I went, the rice tasted like dirty sponge. You know that weird, metallic funky smell that sticks to your hands when you use a really old sponge? My rice tasted like that. I've been waiting patiently for the crowds to die down at Halal Guys. Therefore I thought it would be a good time to visit at 3 PM on a Saturday. Upon arrival there was a line out the door, however the staff is efficient and works in an assembly line like manner to get you your food quickly. Alexis K and I opted to split a regular combo platter. This comes with rice, lettuce, tomato, 4 pieces of pita bread and a combination of beef and lamb. At the end of the line, you can tell the staff which sauce you want (white and/or red). The guy who helped me out with the white sauce went crazy. He squirted so much white sauce that I could barely see the meat and rice anymore. I'm definitely going to ask for less sauce the next time I dine here. Now the important part, how did it taste? I have read a lot of reviews mentioning it tasting different from the NYC food cart. I personally didn't get that impression, it tasted exactly the same from the last time I had it in NYC. I've had a combo platter from the cart in NYC many times, usually late at night and when during sober times too =P I usually get the combo platter with extra white sauce and I just add drops of the hot sauce. The hot sauce does have a kick, I would start of with drops as you eat instead of dumping the entire packet. If it's too spicy for you, just add more white sauce lol! I was disappointed at the portions because I'm used to the cart and their pricing. I get it; they aren't a cart. BUT I went to the Jersey location (not a cart) and I received the same portions as the cart. We even asked the guy (he seemed to be the manager) at this location why did they changed the portions and he explained and I guess I can understand. They are a brick and mortar location, so I get they have more overhead fees -- rent, furniture, equipment, etc -- than the carts. But man, we had more veggies in our bite than usual. Also the meat was more cut up than usual. Usually in the cart, it's packed with rice and meat. The meat wasn't finely cut up. There was still salad, but it was cut up smaller and it didn't take the same amount of space in the platter. It's usually just on top of the rice and meat. And I never got charged for extra white sauce. And I always had leftovers afterwards, maybe half. I wouldn't mind the price increase if the same portions from the cart was still there. I still had to stand in line like I did in a cart and again, I had bigger portions. These are the main reasons I didn't give it 4 or 5 stars. Maybe they'll do better. This location might be closer to me than NYC, but I won't be going out this way just to get it. I'll go to the Jersey or NYC instead. There isn't a lot of seating inside. read more

I went during their Grand Opening day on Friday night so I knew the line was going to be crazy. We waited for 1.5 hours and it was chaotic. Our orders were getting mixed up with our friends. We decided to make their life easier by putting everyone's order in the same bag and figuring out who's who when we got home. Way too many employees in the assembly line so everyone was bumping into each other and confusion on the orders. Food wise - the chicken was too dry and the beef was a little better. The food was also luke warm. I definitely had better chicken and rice at other NYC food carts. That being said I don't think I can fairly judge their service and food since it was their first night. We stopped enroute back to Richmond, VA from Baltimore for lunch. It was similar to what I remember. The portions were huge and had enough for a late night snack later on in the day. Overall its not a fine dining experience and its definitely not any fine dining cuisine. What it DOES DO WELL is add a bit of variety to the sub $10 lunch and dinner options. Throw it into your bucket of choices with Chipotle, Arby's CFA, etc and you have a great option for a large portion of food for under $10. I ordered the combo and the wife got the chicken. The quality of the food is equivalent to that of their food cart in NYC. Not disappointed and happy to know they are within driving distance from home! Was ecstatic to hear that Halal Guys was opening a storefront here in Springfield. This just happens to be very close to Accotink Park where I run for exercise. Now I can go reward at HG!!! Stopped in today around 1:45 pm, so probably late for the lunch crowd. There was about 5 customers eating in there, the dining area is small. I literally had my food and was back in the car in 3 minutes. 3! I got the combo platter, chicken and gyro. They start with iceberg lettuce (meh) and tomatoes and then a heaping portion of rice (basmati?) topped with a decent serving of nicely seasoned chicken chunks and shaved beef gyro. Top off with the famous white and red sauce or get packets to go so it doesn't get soggy whilst you drive home. There's also dessert available and other options to eat but that's my go-to every time, whether in Manhattan on the street or in Virginia in the strip mall. I feel sick to my stomach. I know accidents happen but this is unacceptable. Your cooks need to wear hairnets and prevent this from happening to other customers, because sadly I will not be returning. I've literally never written a review, but this place is such a waste of time I feel compelled to warn others. Halal Guys went from a neighborhood favorite to an absolute must miss. First off, their prices are out of control-- $1-2 per item MORE than Manhattan Halal Guys locations. There's absolutely zero justification for a restaurant in Springfield, VA, to be charging more than the most expensive place in the entire United States. Second, their menu layout is overtly deceptive, listing a meat that comes with a $2 upcharge with the rest of the meats and no indication of the upcharge, instead relying on the customer to know that that meat is actually a "limited time" option-- and in a different part of the menu it mentions limited time options have different prices. Third, you get nickel and dimed with random toppings/sauces like jalepenos, olives, and tahini triggering upcharges to what is already an absolutely bonkers expensive bowl. Fourth, they don't actually display your order as they ring you up, which means who knows what you're actually getting rung up for? No idea, you can get a receipt after you pay. All that led to a small bowl of lettuce, tomato, onion, pepper, and extra chicken (the limited time option) of over $20. Not sure why, because their website says that would be a still utterly absurd $19. Bottom line, do yourself a favor and try other local middle eastern places where you can get a bowl full of various vegetables, sauces, meats-- far more tasty than Halal Guys, for $10-12. read more

I would like to begin with the positive notes. Establishment is clean, service is friendly, and prices are reasonable. Now the not so positive. The menu is super small... You can either get gyro meat, or chicken. and then its either in pita wrap form, or platter form sandwich in a bowl)... thats their main menu ! now you will see they have different variations of these including a super fire hot "barbecue" chicken, and a french fry sandwich wrap... but its reminiscent of taco bell just taking the same ingredients and rearranging them. The side choices are either french fries, falafel, hummus... and maybe one im forgetting.. possibly rice. The tiny menu isnt my biggest complaint. The restaurant markets itself as "Middle Eastern". I dont see it flavor wise. Sure the concept of gyros and shwarma cut from a revolving fire spit are eastern mediterranean no doubt, but the flavors are as bland as can be ! Spicy heat isnt the only flavor you need guys! I have had street food in the middle east, and this place lacked any of the spice aromas I was craving, such as whole cumin, sumac, caraway, cilantro, garlic, red onions, etc... I'm not sure if flavor has been turned down for the suburbanite palette, or maybe I went on an off night. But you can get a similar taste experience from a prepackaged grocery store salad. I like to consider myself relatively educated in the shawarma game. I've been to Europe twice and shawarma and doner Kebab are my go to lunch meals. Quick, filling, cheap. Perfect food for a quick bite. In Wheaton, MD we have a place called Max's Kosher Deli who has incredible shawarma that competes with everything I sampled when oversees. Perhaps my standard of shawarma are too high but I really did not love The Halal Guys. I've been hearing the name and seeing some marketing via social media for a long time now and when I randomly found a location when I was out one day opportunity met desire. I found the experience to be subpar. The menu is limited but for shawarma place that is the norm so no poor marks there. Just a heads up though if you don't like shawarma it's not the place for you. Regarding the shawarma. I got a bowl which had a base of rice and shawarma meat and I got to choose toppings. The toppings where very limited and did not include the authentic shawarma toppings such as the wide variety of picked vegetables. If memory serves me correct to toppings were regular diced tomatoes, onions, and maybe a few other things. I'm not a fan of white sauce so I chose red thinking it would be harrissa. The sauce was very spicy but barley had any flavor it was just spicy. This particular location has very little seating and it's so small that in the dead of winter when anyone opens the front door a gust of cold wind overcomes you. It's unavoidable. Instead of the charm, convenience has taken its place and if you are craving halal chicken and gyro, you dont have to wait for your next NYC trip or beg a friend to bring you a bagful but instead you can just drive a few miles and end up at their brick and mortar storefront. I would like to hate and say nothing beats the cart food (well yeah, anything tastes great when you have been dancing to hip hops top 20 at a club for a couple of hours, your buddy got into a fight, you get thrown out and have to walk couple of blocks with shoes in hand and see that beacon of light that is the halal guys cart offering food, lots of white sauce and some friendly banter with the rest of night owls with a situation much similar to yours) but i also choose convenience sometimes when the cravings kick in.
