I just received a delivery of 6 meat halal with a sauce cup in the middle of the large pieces. Looks great, right? Well, I called because there was no tzaeziki sauce or any sauce cup in the middle. The first thing that hits you when you walk thrubthe door is the aroma of curry and it made me giddy. There is a section that prepares many unique soups and sandwiches. The Gyro caught my eye and I had asked one of the workers if they use prepared gyro meat, or if they use the kind that they slice off of the giant loaf of lamb meat. UnfortunatelynI was told that they only use the processed meat. The brick oven pizza was interesting and they offer close to fifteen different ethnic pizzas. The Bakery section seemed cool and they offer several different flavors of Baklava- another one of my favorites. The items in the display didn't have a name or price so I wasn't sure about what was different about each one. I suppose I could have simply chosen a small baklava treat at random. For a light lunch, a friend brought me to Mediterranean Bakery & Cafe to try out their Arabic flatbread pizza / men-oushi. He told me to expect a wait at noon since they bake them to order. I put in an order for one cheese flatbread with extra cheese ($5.99) and wandered around the grocery part of the store for about 20 minutes before they called my order number. The pizza had a similar diameter to that of Pizza Hut personal pan pizzas. The bread possessed a fluffiness that one would see in extraordinary pita. Love this restaurant. Feels like I was transported back to the Middle East. Authentic fresh flavors. Absolutely loved the spinach pies and flat bread. I keep coming back for their prepared foods. There's consistently people coming to buy them, and there's also always a line for the fresh baked-to-order manoushe which I sadly still haven't had a chance to try. The malfouf (stuffed cabbage) w/ meat is still my go-to. Stuffed grape leaves were more dense, which I don't like as much, but they're still decent. Great selection of olives - liked my Sicilian ones from here as they're relatively low in salt-content. Additionally great to get here are the sfihas (small square shaped savory pastries) - there are four flavors to choose from and I honestly liked them all. You can buy a sampling of these four - I want to say my two favorite of these are the plain beef and the labne & beef ones - but the labne & tomato and the spinach ones were also great. Still wish for the middle eastern dessert offerings to be better improved though. read more

They have a great selection of good from the Middle East, Asia, East Africa, Italy, etc. In particular, my favorite things are the Lebanese pizzas, selection of imported, Lebanese, green / black olives, and olive oil/spices that are not found at your traditional grocery store. They also bake fresh pita daily, which is very good however it only maintains its freshness for about two days. This restaurant is a hidden gem! Their prices are amazing and the food is delicious. I've tried their platters, shawarmas and pizzas. The servers are very attentive and happy to answer questions. Clean and well stocked market with many varieties of fresh and preserved Mediterranean delights. We stopped by on a Tuesday evening for pita bread which is made on premises and got distracted by the fresh baklawe, stuffed grape leaves and spanakopita. They have a large selection of cheeses, lebna, spreads, you find lots of delicious items. The service was fast and the staff at the counter was friendly. Wow! Mediterranean Bakery & cafe is very impressive. Tucked away in the back of a shopping center the inside is like a grocery hidden gem. I ordered the chicken shwarma combo. The portions were very generous. The chicken was flavorful. You will also get a full size pita with your combo.The combo came with a side salad and a drink. The salad was a decent size and came with dressing already mixed inside of the salad. The grocery store had some authentic items and has a bakery section where you can get pastries and other items. While we've only tried the prepared foods at Mediterranean Bakery, it's really been fabulous. The selection of sweet and savory pastries are great... Get the savory ones warmed up if you want a quick bite. They're also really affordable. While we haven't gotten a lot from the hot food area yet, the flatbreads we've tried are so delicious. Again, really reasonable prices, they're ready quickly, and taste great. We've had the ground meat and the za'atar and cheese, but it's another area where I want to try more of what they have to offer. They're nearby for us and have quickly become a go-to when we want something different and not spend too much. read more

So here's my little secret when it comes to the Mediterranean Bakery and Cafe: I don't check-in every single time I visit. Mainly because it would be borderline embarrassing how often I'm here. And while there are many reasons to visit this fabulous place, the two main ones for me are: 1). Some of the freshest baked pita bread in the entire DMV 2). Smooth, creamy, and delicious hummus The Mediterranean Bakery is baking fresh pitas throughout the day and for good reason - people LOVE the heavenly breads that come out of the brick oven. After walking into the store, head towards the back where the oven and take out counters are, and there will be a metal rack where the pitas are located. They are perfect for dipping, making sandwiches, or just snacking by themselves. On your way back towards the pita bread, you'll also pass by the refrigerated case which has all sorts of delectable Mediterranean foods. Stuffed grape leaves, Lebanese meat pies (Sfeeha), and of course, super delicious hummus. The hummus here is all made in house and has been blended to be extra creamy, with hints of garlic and cumin, and not overpowered by tahini. And while it might be a bit more expensive than the run of the mill brands you buy at the grocery store, the non-factory made taste is worth the extra cost. I usually get a large container for around $9 and it will last at least a week. In a way, I'm kind of surprised by the low review count for the Mediterranean Bakery since it's been in business in this corner of Alexandria since 1977! Just perusing the rows and rows of interesting grocery items, spices, and pastry items can take an hour or more. Bottom line is that this is a fantastic destination for Mediterranean foods and one of the more underappreciated neighborhood gems. read more

I feel like a little kid in a candy store when I shop here for high quality food items. Some of my favorites include organic pomegranate juice,the house packaged bulk dates, extra virgin olive oil, bulk spices and the Dubai chocolate covered dates. Love this place! It's our go-to market for a lot of things that you can't find anywhere else; it's a neat, little middle-eastern store where you can get all sorts of gems. They have freshly prepared foods, deli items, frozen food, bakery items and prepackaged goods. There are also a couple of tables in the front of the store to sit down and enjoy your finds. One of the reasons we come shop here, is to get real harissa (yes, it matters, especially for couscous, and yes, there is a real difference in taste) and to peruse and pick up some of the imported sweets from all over, especially the Italian nougat that I always bring back when I'm in Italy or France. They prepare food and also bake fresh breads and pastries everyday AND they cater! We love the dolmas, Lebanese rolls, date cookies, biscotti, oh I could go on & on about the goodies, lol. It was quite busy as I came on a Sunday afternoon, but I had my food within 10 minutes. My stepdaughter was enjoying some time at Get Air so myself and my 4 month old wandered over here on recommendation of my SO. They sell a large variety of Mediterranean prepared food and also a surprising amount of international groceries. There is also the cafe counter with some indoor seating. From the cafe I had a chicken gyro and it was delicious! Every sandwich comes with hummus and pita chips-really tasty as well! I purchased fresh pita, spicy eggplant dip, tzatziki, grape leaves, and frozen gyro meat. Everything was fresh and delicious!
