We all enjoyed a pleasant lunch outside, perfect weather. Waitress very pleasant and accommodating. Drank a nice cool hard apple cider. Ordered the Por K dip n chips, and it was delicious. Then we got our burgers. Soft bun was kind of soggy. Generous with the beer braised onions, but overall, not my favorite burger. Sides that came with, were skimpy, and mediocre at best. Grilled eggplant, smoked potato skins, ehh. Grilled Brussels sprouts were pretty good. They were proud to tell us, they don't fry anything, don't even have a fryer. Too bad, I loooove fried stuff. No other way to get the crunch! Not a bad place, I wish I could have tried the ribs, but not available till after 4pm. Really wanted to love this place, maybe expecting too much. read more

Hostess was RUDE! Three of us arrived at 2pm on Friday and were advised of a 35 minute wait. We were OK with that but wanted a cold beer while we waited. She acted like we were requesting the impossible and I guess we were. Customer Service is everything and it starts with the first employee one encounters. Based on my one visit tonight I am in love with this place. But finally coming here after driving by countless times could well have never been. They don't look like they are hurting for business and their credentials of almost 100% solid 5-star reviews at Yelp prove they don't need any advice from me, but I do wonder how many people see the name (like I did) and think it's a biker bar, then drive by and are pretty convinced it's a cowboy saloon with loud music and a bunch of drunks and are convinced the Handlebar Pub & Grill is not for them. I learned so much tonight. First off it's not really a bar at all, although they do have a huge one. The only alcohol they serve is beer and wine and they have plenty of creative and delicious non-alcoholic options. No, they're not open until 2 AM with loud music and dancing (they close at 10 PM most nights, 8 PM on Sundays) and the live music is subdued and tucked away back in a corner ... and no dancing. They have one TV over the bar that didn't seem to be tuned to anything in particular, and the staff is fun, friendly and courteous. Definitely not bar-like. The only reason we came tonight was my taste for barbecue, based on other reviews. Being a newbie I didn't know that barbecue night is Friday only. And that they are one of the few bars around that doesn't have a Friday Fish Fry. In fact they absolutely don't serve anything that's fried. The menu is kinda bar-like in that it's mostly burgers and sandwiches but with an upscale touch with sides like kale slaw with bleu cheese and walnuts, or smoked acorn squash drizzled with organic maple syrup and pecans or grilled eggplant. You get the idea. I was in a meat mood so I had a sirloin steak with sweet potatoes and grilled asparagus with feta cheese. Sirloin isn't the most tender cut of beef but they did a good job with it. The veggies and potato were superb and the whole thing was under $15 bucks. Service like I said is friendly and attentive and the place has a definite one-of-a-kind personality. I'm not a beer drinker but the list seemed to be trendy and comprehensive. This is a restaurant done right and the 30 minute wait for an outdoor table was testament to that. The Handlebar should get a six-star review, with the extra star for being gluten-free. My wife and I had dinner here tonight, first timers. Wow! Friday night special: Pork ribs, pecan wood smoked in-house for 8 hours. Smoked potato skins appetizer, each artistically garnished with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of green onion. We sat at "David's bar" partly because it was the only 2-top without a 40-min wait. Actually, it was perfect for a Yelp review, because David is the grill master, and a 20-year veteran of the culinary arts, though only the last 2 at Handlebar. We got to watch him work the skillet and grill simultaneously while taking our orders, answering all kinds of questions from us and other guests at the bar, and cracking jokes with the hosts and servers. We talked about food, their process and philosophy -- simple, fresh ingredients -- and about the menu and owner, who has Celiac. Nearly everything on the menu is gluten free, or at least offers a gluten-free option, including buns and bread. Their delicious BBQ sauce is also GF and they sell bottles of it, many of them, I suspect. The ribs were the star of the evening, though. I can honestly say the ribs were "the best I've had, like, ever." I literally said that out loud while finishing my last one, and topping it off with a (gf) pear & blackberry cider on tap. My wife agreed. "Yep," with a swig of (also gf) Dubs Dark India Pale Ale (Belgium). Wait, what? GF IPA in AJ?! If you've never dated someone who has an extreme gluten sensitivity or allergy, you can't fathom the joy of just having a nice meal out where you don't have to worry about what sinister forces might be lurking in every sauce, every label, every menu item, or resorting to "salad" for $13.95. Speaking of prices - they're quite reasonable. I was stuffed on a 1/3 slab because there was an unbelievable amount of meat, very little fat, and everything completely fell off the bone with no utensils required. Thankfully, the plate was served with a lemony-fresh moist towelette. I also thoroughly enjoyed the smoked Brussels sprouts. Three drinks, two rib platters each with a side and a appetizer for $56. Speaking of AJ, the design and flavor of the venue is an eclectic mix of biker bar, cowboy tavern and dusty saloon. Presumably the handlebar reference is for bikers, and there were several there, but ironically a 1920s era bicycle light sculpture illuminates the back patio. It smells amazing from the moment you open your car door. No smoking on the patio - except for the meats. Go early if you want a short wait-- and the special, which you do. Go back and try the rest of the menu. You won't be disappointed. This restaurant is a priceless gem, in Arizona, but particularly in Apache Junction. I can't believe I've lived here for 17 years and only just discovered it - which I wouldn't have, but for my wife's gluten intolerance. Can't wait to go back. read more

The food here is good, above average and much better than expected for Apache Junction. My adverse rating is due to several problems we encountered in our recent visit: 1) It took us 60 minutes to get seated. 2) Beyond that, it took us another 90 minutes before our meal was served. We had to flag the waiter down after 15 minutes just to get him to take our order. And he never once came and let us know how long until our food would be ready. But at least 2 times he came to ask if we wanted more alcohol. Seems like a cheap delay trick to sell more booze! Doesn't matter how busy it is, we should not be waiting 2.5 hours for our dinner. 3) Our table was exactly 2 feet from the stage and loud speaker. So we had to scream at each other just to talk. Most tables were full of people just drinking alcohol and watching the stage. So we were stuck with the worst table in the outdoor "room". 4) Worst of all, someone recently VOMITED in the flower bed near our table. It stunk terribly. My friend and I kept looking at each other like "dude, what is that smell", until we figured out it was vomit. So try enjoying you meal with the smell of old vomit wafting your way every 10 seconds. 5) Small portions, high price. My friend was still hungry after eating his entire meal which cost $11, and I was only a little full after eating my meal which cost $17. The side portions are tiny. Disgusting. I will never return. If they allow vomit to marinate into the edges of the restaurant flower bed, what is the kitchen like? They offered no concessions at all. read more

Stopped at this little dive on our way back from a trip to Canyon Lake. What a great choice! Host said it would be a 45 minute wait but we were seated in 15 minutes. We sat outside and people watched. There was plenty of room, with chairs & a bench to wait. Eclectic is a good word for this place. We loved looking at the beer pulls on the ceiling. We started with the hot pork dip and chips. Wowzer!! Tasty. The sweet pickles really set off the meat. Guys liked their craft brews! We had water in a carafe, which was nice for refills. My green chili burger was DELICIOUS! The chili's and bacon, along with the saucy soft bun was perfect! Friend's sw chicken panini was good. We both had the Handlebar potatoes: a mix of potatoes, onions, and peppers perfectly grilled and spiced. Guys sirloins were cooked exactly as requested. They had smashed potatoes with carrots & peas/asparagus. This place knows how to cook them veggies!! Service: slow. Our drinks took a long time, as did the food. It was a busy early evening. Waitress: not sure. Not the most polite nor attentive. Definitely worth your time. Do as we did-- take a mountain drive & relax here. The lady busing the tables was very sweet and the owner (?) was very nice. They expect their expansion to be open in a month. read more

Best place I've found so far to grab lunch and a beer in AJ. Shocked that they had several good Oregon beers on tap (10 Barrell!). Their menu is eclectic for a bar-type place: beautifully sauteed brussel sprouts as a side for your burger, what? They actually cook your burger to-order (medium rare for me, and it was perfect), and the flavor is outstanding! My wife thought the Reuben was very good, and the person that had the stuffed Pasilla pepper (order the appetizer if you are there for lunch). Look up at the ceiling: there you will see more beer handles than I have ever encountered in my lifetime. My wife and I go to Handlebar about every other month to enjoy a bite to eat and a few beers. Pretty much always have a good time and good food but had an issue yesterday (5-13-23). My wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich and the first bite she took had a big piece of fat in it. She was immediately turned off and removed the bun only to find out that it wasn't even exactly pulled pork but more of a sliced pork. She weeded through the fat and ate a little, but not with the bun only what she could see. I wanted to say something to the server but my wife was like "no, don't bother, I'll just never order this again". I held back but she eventually mentioned it to our server. I didn't think we should've even been charged for it but we paid the bill and left. Disappointing for her as we skipped breakfast to have lunch that day. My burger was fine and no complaints there. We'll be back but caution on the pulled pork. read more

Thought we would stop for a late lunch based upon previous reviews. Staff was friendly. We were seated outside in the covered area. Basic lawn chairs. That's ok but we were not told that smoking was allowed. Disappointed in the food. My chicken on my southwest sandwich had a huge section where it was rubbery and stretchy. I couldn't eat it. I also had the kettle chips. I thought they would be house made but obviously came straight out of a bag. I must have had the bottom of the bag because not one chip was bigger than a nickel. Had a friend visit from out of state and we visited Handlebar in the evening on Tues nite, which is chicken wing nite. Live entertainment was very good, and the patio atmosphere at night all lit up beautifully. Once again, top notch food and service. I had bruschetta burger with grilled asparagus, and it was an excellent choice. Tasty, cooked to perfection, and the server was right there despite the busy customer load. My friend had the peppercorn burger with mashed and grilled potatoes. Another tasty selection. I am a very picky eater when choosing quality restaurants. I cook from scratch, know flavors and can honestly recommend this establishment to the most refined consumer. The servers here earn my respect and kindly repaid them with a larger than normal tip. read more

We have been long time customers at The Handlebar, we supported them through COVID by ordering food to go, love the ambiance and chill vibe, food is great etc. However we came Friday night around 9:00 not realizing the kitchen was closed, no problem, we decided to stay, have a few drinks and listen to the awesome band Remnants of Soul that was playing. The hostess, possibly an owner, as she has been there since we've been coming, was SO RUDE and treated us like we were a complete inconvenience. She put six of us around a tiny fire table when there were clearly other bigger tables available for six people.
