I went with a Pastrami Dip and a small onion rings. Here is how they were. Pastrami Dip- This thing was tasty! They use a white/french type roll, and pile on pastrami, mustard and pickles. Very messy sandwich to eat in the car, but damn, it was delicious and worth the pastrami shrapnel that hit my shirt. Hadn't had The Hat in years, and it brought back the same taste/feelings as in the past. It's their signature sandwich for a reason. Onion Rings- Went with a small and it was plenty. Couldn't even finish all of them. Perfectly fried and crispy, not super duper greasy. A really good onion ring. Solid meal. Fulfilled my craving, and filled the belly. This is my second time back and the food is ALWAYS amazing! I've never had a terrible sandwich here and I think it's better than Philippe's in LA. My only mark is that the au jus was more flavorful this time than the last, but it was still good during the previous. The onion rings are surprisingly good considering I don't like onion rings. I will actually eat these :) The line is always out the door, but it wasn't super slow for a dinner rush. It's average to loud, but for such a casual setting I don't mind it. A restaurant that's all about pastrami?! I love it! I mean, I don't eat tons of meat. But when I did, pastrami was one of my drool-worthy weaknesses. Needless to say, I had to try some of the offerings here. I was in a rush, so I was only able to gobble down their loaded fries. These fries were decadent, topped with so much gooey goodness. The highlight though, of course, was the shredded/grated pastrami meat topping. There were also some nice accent tastes throughout, which I think may have been light pickles or relish. It's a diner on the side of State College Blvd with ample parking and seating inside, with an old school diner vibe. I have been coming to the hat for over 25 years . I really love the wet fries and the pastrami dip. Even going at lunch time the service is great and the workers are friendly. The consistency of the food is right on and what ever location you eat at the food looks and tastes the same. One thing I noticed this last trip is the portions are way smaller. The wet fries only filled half the tray and the pastrami dip hardly had any pastrami in it. Was in the area and wanted something different..... The Hat is different right? So I ordered the Roast Beef sandwich for $11.99 a small onion ring and medium drink and my total came out to $20.55. The sandwich itself was OK the Au Jus sauce that came with it was about half container, so I expected it to be filled up. The bread was actually a little soggy before I even dipped the sandwich. The fries were freaking huge (again I ordered onion rings) and they were so so hot! The drink choices are good, but the cups totally suck. They get totally soggy and feel like they're gonna fall apart. Next time I'll go to In-N-Out or Jim's Burgers on Ball Road. Way better value and way better food. read more

The Hat is one of my fave places and I regret not going more often in the past. The chili cheese fries alone are worth the wait and believe me, sometimes the wait is looooong. The drive thru gets long and inside gets full, but I think it's such a class spot that everyone deals with it. The pina colada drink they have is also really delicious. I'm definitely full after sharing a plate of chili cheese fries with someone so it's not too pricy for me, but so many menu items look amazing, from their burgers to their deli meat sandwiches. You can tell that all the employees in kitchen are working hard to move people along quickly! They're definitely not being lazy.
