Came here over President's Day weekend to go skiing at Okemo and decided to stop by this cute little place for a quick lunch. The inside has a diner feel, there's a good amount of seating. It was pretty packed on a Saturday. Even though we came about 15 minutes before closing, they were kind enough to seat us anyways. I got the Crab Cake Benedict and the crab cakes were some of the best I've ever had! They make both the crab cakes and hollandaise sauce by scratch. They only serve this on weekends so just a little something to keep in mind. My boyfriend got the Our Famous Downhill which comes with a bunch of breakfast foods - eggs, pancakes, bacon, and homefries. Great place to stop by and grab breakfast! It's very interesting, most of not all of the restaurants are carpeted and don't play any music. The Hatchery was no exception. The 2 waitresses were sassy and funny. One describes he poutine as "sinfully good". With a description like that I had to try it! Well sin is good in the moment but perhaps not good for you in the long run. I devoured my plate. So cheesy, creamy, comforting and salty! But then all that heaviness hit me like a bag of bricks. I stared at my plate and wondered how many calories I had just consumed and how many extra trips I will need to make to the gym to work it off. Nearly perfect breakfast! I would return again and again and highly recommend to others. We got lucky and had a very short wait to get a table, however the line grew significantly after us and stayed steady during our entire visit. The Hatchery is worth a wait. I had the daily omelette special which was a hatchery crab cake, chèvre cheese and green onion folded into a perfectly cooked, fluffy and tasty omelette, topped with corn. My companion had The Cilantro and we split a blueberry pancake as a side. All 3 meal items tasted fresh and great and the portions were plenty to be full. The blueberry pancake was probably the best I've ever had and of course was accompanied with Vermont real maple syrup. The cilantro tasted fresh, pleasing and perfect. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is the coffee wasn't great but passable and our server didn't visit much and we waited a bit for coffee, water, and drink refills, but they may've been short staffed and she was pleasant and efficient. Went here for breakfast on the last day of our visit. A great selection of breakfast meals. It's a little small and people are on top of you if there's a wait. I had the homemade corn beef hash, 2 eggs and toast. It was very good. I wanted to try 1 of their pancakes with blackberries. Again very good but expensive. $5.50 for a single pancake. It was big but not $5.50 big. They did have ice coffee which I was craving for since the closest Cumberland Farms was 30 minutes away. We even took a cup out with us but it was in a paper cup. The Hatchery is my very favorite breakfast spot. They have a wide menu with lots of choices. My favorite is the cilantro pesto omelette. It's so good! Staff is super friendly. We went the other night to try their new maple bacon creemee. It was unbelievable. Yummy maple soft serve, little drizzle of maple syrup, crumbled bacon, topped with a slice of the best bacon, all in a waffle cone. It was ridiculously good! read more

Nice little restaurant. They close early but are very accommodating, I was especially impressed that a woman came in 15 minutes before closing and asked if her party of 7 could do takeout l. The waitress/ owner said they could come in and sit down for lunch, it wasn't a problem. They were seated and ordered promptly. We left a few minutes before closing. That family was very grateful. The town is Ludlow VT where jut 6 weeks before the town sustained huge damages from flooding and many eateries were not open. These folks were passing through town with kids and needed to eat. So on to our service and meal. Tip top in every way, I had a Turkey and cranberry concoction that was luscious, hubby had an equally wonderful sandwich, don't remember which one it was. We had no problem cleaning our plates. The waitress/ owner was just as pleasant as you always hope they will be. The chef came out to talk to some folk, the other waiters was equally pleasant. The windows were covered with kids' drawings facing outward, blocking the view and the light. We were in a tiny claustrophobic cave. I have been coming to the Hatchery since I was a little boy when I would visit my grandparents in Weston. Since then, it has always been a good, consistent, true Vermont breakfast staple for me, and no matter how old I get or how far out of the way it is, I always make it a point to visit the Hatchery when I come to Vermont. I usually enjoy eggs with home fries, bacon, and sausage. The pancakes with Vermont maple syrup are also very good, and the coffee is always fresh. We were looking for somewhere that served booze with breakfast (the locals we asked thought we were nuts) and noticed a hard written sign in the window for mimosas and bloody Mary's.....SOLD! While The Hatchery could certainly benefit from some aesthetic updates, we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the menu. I firmly believe all diners should offer the whole menu all day, and the Hatchery did! We got one of the specials - eggs Benedict over crab cakes. Reasonably priced, good size - 2 ample crab cakes with 2 eggs, toast, and adequate hollandaise. I'm far from an expert on eggs Benedict, but there was not a crumb to be had after a few minutes. We also got a cilantro omelette, which had a cilantro pesto.....delightful. Omelette was cooked well, came with toast and home fries. Also, they had five or six hot sauce options....glorious! The chicken artichoke sandwich was perfect. I despise a two inch thick chunk of chicken breast on a sandwich, and this sandwich was PERFECT with an evenly thick slab of chicken breast, artichokes, avocado, bacon....I drool a little thinking about it. Came with chips. The coffee was good. The service was fine. The hot sauce options were exceptional. We have been here a few times and have noticed that the owner''s wife is pleasant when the place is not busy but is extremely rude when it gets busy and she is overwhelmed. Most recently, their Ipad check in system was glitching and we ended up waiting an hour before realizing that our name was not on their list, despite receiving a text confirmation after checking in. While waiting, we also overheard others complaining about issues with the check in system. When we kindly let the owner's wife know of their system error, she snapped at us that it was not their fault and was extremely passive aggressive and condescending, implying it must have been a mistake on our end. I see other reviews mentioning the staff belittling customers and it is very much in line with our experience. It is clear that the chef's wife cannot handle working in a fast paced environment without being incredibly unprofessional and letting her frustrations out on customers. We left promptly after that, and it worked out, as we went to The Country Girl Diner, where the food was better and their staff were very friendly and welcoming even at their busiest. Tip for future patrons: if using their Ipad check in system, it is safest to confirm with them that it has shown up on their end. Do not trust the text confirmation you get. Also, if you go during their busy hours, the food is decent, but not worth the potential nasty attitude you may get if the staff is feeling overwhelmed. read more

This place is dismal. Don't even ask how I found myself in the middle of Nowheresville, VT. I was with my family on a road trip that included many mishaps, one of which was the erroneous choice of going to The Hatchery for breakfast. The coffee was burnt. The server looked bored and humanoid. The service was inattentive bordering on negligent even though we were the only ones there. Don't let the deceptively promising menu fool you. IT'S A TRAP! we ordered some inoffensive blueberry pancakes of the kind that you could get for half the price and twice the portion at Denny's at 3am, some other unmemorable, minimally edible bakery items, and the star of this review: the smoked salmon hash (see pic). I wasn't even sure whether those brown bits on my plate in fact came from a fish, except that they made the potatoes extremely salty and were of a desiccated, cardboard-like texture. In fact, I don't even know what cardboard tastes like, but I bet it would taste like these 'smoked salmon bits' at The Hatchery. Conclusion: don't go to Ludlow, VT unless you absolutely have to. And when you do, bring your own granola bars, because if you don't, the choice is either starve, or subject yourself to the atrocities of The Hatchery. read more

I am almost personally aggrieved by the non-five star reviews of this place. It's really wonderful food. The bacon is perfect! Thick and tender, but just the right amount of crispy. The BLT is served with crisped cheddar, which makes the cheese a perfect pair with the bacon and toasted bread. Corned beef hash is the real thing, none of that sad, canned stuff. Sausage gravy to die for! Service was friendly and attentive. I never went without a full glass of ice water. This place really sweats the details. Yum! We stopped here on our last day in Ludlow to grab breakfast and eat in the park across the street. Ordering was simple and convenient - we placed our order online - and then drove to the restaurant and parked on the street. The Hatchery is a staple for all those who travel and vacation to the Ludlow area. I've been coming here for breakfast ever since I was a little kid learning how to ski at Okemo and I've continued coming here now that I'm a slightly bigger kid still learning how to ski. The menu offers a bunch of different breakfast and lunch options, but the go to has to be the Eggs Benedict (I prefer it on sausage instead of the typical ham). Get there too late and it'll be sold out! I also recommend the avocado breakfast wrap, the Benedict, or the famous downhill! Couple of cons - Lines can be real long so plan ahead. You can put your name down and kill time in the book store down the street. - I wish they had real milk/cream (preferably locally sourced) on the tables instead of the little cups of half and half for your coffee/tea. Small detail, but something like that would add to the charm! End note - they sell really cool t-shirts that I've been dying to buy! read more
