With so many places to imbibe in Oceanside, I realize how competitive these places have to be to…read morestay in business so I have to admit, my standards are fairly high. My husband and I stopped in to Frankie's on a recent Saturday at 5pm. Our kiddo had a performance down the street at 6pm so we had a little time to kill beforehand. The neighboring spots looked busy so we decided to go with Frankie's, seeing as they were less inundated at the time and we had a time constraint. Another allure was the sandwich board at the front door advertising discounted cocktails - sold!! Inside there were a handful of patrons at the bar, another table with two additional patrons and maybe a couple on the patio so it was fairly quiet and slow, so it looked promising. We headed up to the bar and hung out behind two empty barstools, the single female bartender greeted us and said she'd be right with us, but then continued chatting up the seated patrons, serving them and their friends that had just joined (AFTER we'd arrived). We moved a little further down to the handoff area where she was making drinks to save her having to come back to us again, and stood there for probably 10 minutes while she took orders and made all the drinks. We commented that she looked like she could definitely use a hand, and she said they were still adjusting into summer hours and determining whether more coverage was needed at this time - I figured 5pm on a Saturday should be primetime, so I'm not sure in what universe having a single bartender makes any sense. Finally we placed our cocktail orders, waited while they were made, and then put our card down for the tab. After we'd paid, I noticed the cocktails were more expensive than advertised on the sandwich board out front - I couldn't find a disclaimer anywhere that said only certain cocktails were included, so while it was a bummer I wasn't about to wait another 10-15 minutes to catch her attention and ask for clarification. Just a heads up to beware of whatever is advertised that might summon you in from the sidewalk, and make sure you ask before you make your selection. Drinks were very subpar, nothing special to write home about. While I can appreciate the Gatsby-esque vibe they're trying to uphold at Frankie's, they really should increase their staffing especially during prime weekend and evening hours, and be more transparent about their specials and what's included and what's not. Hindsight is 20/20, and the low volume of patrons when everything else around it was going off was probably a sign, so we'll skip Frankie's our next go around.

In this case, "low-key" refers to a tiki bar that is not over-the-top; one that doesn't cause you to enter into an entirely different reality. There's a time and place for that sort of tiki bar but in a small coastal town perhaps you don't want or need to enter a fourth dimension. The Lobby is small (though larger than I'd anticipated), not noticeably dark (like many in the genre), and outfitted with a nice array of tiki-themed tchotchkes. Scooby Doo, playing silently on a small tv above the bar, is a perfect accompaniment to the pleasing decor. I both ate and drank here and found nothing not to enjoy. Tiki bars generally elicit happiness in me and this one, with its excellent server, did not change that mindset. An Astro Chimp ($14) was my tiki drink of choice, mostly because I was interested in trying a cocktail featuring cold brew. Very good, and it did not keep me up all night. Fish & Chips ($23) was a sizable and satisfying portion, plenty there to be shared by two. "Brussels" ($11), were also quite good and ample. You will not go hungry if you choose to dine here. The Lobby is a fun choice for your time in Oceanside. Stylish and satisfying on every front, I'd happily return. Other stuff: * There is apparently a stairway-accessible rooftop deck here but it was closed for a private event during my visit. If open, definitely worth checking out. * 5% surcharge is automatically added to everything you spend here.

The seating is more like patio-style furniture, so the chairs are very low. Since he is on the taller side, his legs were all bunched up the whole time. We had made reservations, but we didn't know that booking "Standard" meant that we were going to be sitting in the hotel pool area... this was probably our biggest complaint. Even though the view was spectacular, it was interrupted by kids jumping in the pool and occasionally splashing us and also just running by us. Also because we were by the pool, our cocktails came in plastic glasses which also made us feel a little slighted, especially since the cocktails are pretty pricey. The service was just okay. Our server was nice and we didn't ever feel like we were being neglected even though we were over by the pool and not in the main area. I just feel there wasn't anything remarkable about the service. I think when you are expecting to pay higher prices for an experience, you want more personable servers. All this to say, we were really happy with all the food we had! We had the 1/2 dozen oysters (my only complaint is that they did not disclose where they were from on the menu so you don't really know what you are paying for and it is pricey), the sea bass ceviche (super yummy!), the lamb, and the prawn special. I did not shut up about how yummy the prawns were all night, even after we left! Anyway, I think I would come back for drinks and maybe a dish or two, but we definitely won't be coming back for date night dinner again.

That perception aside, if you aren't trying to chat the bartender up for lively conversation there is plenty to see in the cleverly themed bar. There are just a couple U-booths and a handful of bar stools. So you're on a time-limit for your stop in this portal.

I really don't mind waiting, but when you combine that with the quality of the drinks and the lack of attention, it just makes it seem like no one really cares that much. That's kind of why I made the comment in the beginning. The place has a cool idea behind it, but you can tell it's missing some of the professionalism and attention to detail that comes with running a good bar. The one thing that really saves this place is the view. It's a really nice view, and during sunset I can definitely see why people come here. Other than that though, I personally wouldn't spend my money here again.

Our meals came and honest to God the Smashburger looked like a kids meal. This tiny burger plopped on a big white plate with onion rings, and the burger was not good. The bison burger did not have any of the sauces on it that it stated in the menu so he needed to ask for some love on the burger. So the waiter brought over a bunch of sauces. It's a shame because they talk about this place all the time and I really wanted to try it and it just wasn't up to par. I ended up taking my Smashburger home, and the next day I scraped the nasty sauce off it, added mayonnaise to the bun and an extra slice of cheese and it was actually pretty good. I definitely wanna come again because they talk about this place all the time and how good the food is. Maybe it was just the night we went.

Everything was great honestly. No complaints. My wife REALLY loved the braised pork shoulder. My steak was excellent and even though it was free, $32 for a ribeye is the lowest you'll find anywhere. It was nice having not having to fight for a seat. Enjoying a cocktail on the patio in perfect weather is something everyone should try. WORST BAR EVER !!!!!!! If I could rate it with negative Stars I would!!! First of all I waited exactly 28minutes to get a drink, after the first 10min I started to count and if my phone didn't die and I would have called the friend I was meeting, and told her to meet me somewhere else, trust me I should have!!!! When the rude older Blonde woman finally asked me what I was drinking she had such an attitude I couldn't believe this woman actually made a living in tips with an attitude like that, if it weren't for the other Hot Redhead she was working with, she wouldn't have gotten a tip from me at all. Trust me I have been a bartender all over the country for the past 6 years this place was a NIGHTMARE!!! I ordered a vodka red bull and I could barely drink it because it was so strong, it tasted like a splash of red bull instead of a mixed drink. I know some people like that but if I wanted a shot I would have ordered one! There are NO DOORS IN THE LADIES ROOM there are only little curtains ( one strip actually) on a pole that separates the 2 toilets, so cheap and DISGUSTING!! As far as the people hanging out in the bar, I don't think I have ever seen so many dirtbags in my life! Girls in the sluttiest Ugliest outfits EVER including the Skanky Washed Up looking Bartenders (its actually OFFENSIVE, one of their tops was so small her Nip was hang in out!). And the guys were so Hammered/Wasted and touching everything that walked by them it was Gross! Why these drunk fools didn't get kicked out is beyond me. I just moved to California 2 months ago and Thank God this wasn't the first bar I went to in California or I don't think I would ever go out again! I feel lucky I got out of there before someone slipped something in my drink, thats the kind of sh*thole this so called "PirateBar" is. I wouldn't even let my friend order I just wanted to get the hell out of there. With Service like that and an atmosphere that borders on DANGEROUS I don't know how the hell this place is in business! Look bottom-line: if you are looking to be mauled by nasty drunks, look at a bunch of skanky old women, get IGNORED for 30minutes or more get treated like a piece of garbage by ugly old washed up B*tches with Attitude in a FILTHY SMELLY dive bar and possibly get ROBBED .... then THE HAUNTED HEAD IS THE PLACE !!!!!! if you want to go out and have a horrible time... this is place to go. beware never go here. dont waste your time or money... sam will spit in your drink and give you a drity glass if she doesnt like you. samantha a bartender at haunted head saloon does not i'd. she did not i'd one person while i was there nor did she id me. make sure if your a kid and ur looking to get in trouble u go to here..... she wont check.... she looks like a little blonde girl. also if your a pretty girl do not go there... samantha will talk shit to you try to intimidate you untill you want to leave.... if you ask another bartender for a drink... sam, will tell who ever it is behind the bar "dont serve her" she will look at you, ignore you then go talk to someone for 5 mins a person and will not care about serving you. finally after she started to serve the guy next to me i asked her "can i get a beer" with a huge attitude acts like its a huge problem to do her job goes and get a drity glass and serves beer out of a dirty glass when i wanted a bottle... sam gives a bad name for this bar and makes you feel like this bar does not care about you, the customer. and you will have a horrible time... do not waste your money or time. but on a good note. the guy behind the bar will try to make sure u have a good time. but wont serve if samantha asks him not too... if your looking to file any lawsuits go here because you will be discriminated against. read more

We stumbled upon this awesome dive bar while exploring the area on vacation, and we're so glad we took a chance on it! The exterior didn't exactly scream "must-visit," but the energy emanating from inside was infectious, and we decided to roll the dice. As soon as we stepped inside, we were hit with a pirate-themed wonderland, complete with dollar bills plastered everywhere - it was love at first sight! The atmosphere was electric, with a deafening party vibe that made us feel like we were amid a raucous celebration. Be warned: this isn't the place if you're looking for a low-key spot to grab a quiet drink. Maybe you should visit early because this place was rocking on a Thursday night at 10 PM. But if you're up for a shot and a beer and meeting some colorful characters along the way, you'll fit right in. The bartenders were top-notch, expertly mixing drinks and keeping the good times rolling. Remember to show your appreciation with a healthy tip--these guys deserve it! My girlfriend and I stopped by the HH other night after seeing the reviews on Yelp, as it sounded like a fun place to check out. Even before we were in the door, we had drunk soldiers and non-soldiers outside making inappropriate comments and gestures towards my date. The doorman never moved an inch as the scene was getting uncomfortable, but luckily we were able to enter with no further issues. The interior was very cool and Disneyland-ish, with lots of atmosphere, however the drunken knucklehead Jack Sparrow Wanna-be's, and slobbering goons all around continued to make my girlfriend uncomfortable with their perverse "been out to sea too long" advances, so we left for safer shores. fuck the big bald headed ass bitch behind the counter. my friend and i went in to use their restroom this last thursday 6/30 around 8pm and this son of a bitch had the balls to call us out in front of the entire bar. demanded our ids and the entire bar was quiet watching us. we took out our id's with no issue considering we're 23 years old, and he kept giving us questionable looks, then back at the id, then back at us. then he went to go scan them like if they were fake. fuck you for trying to embarrass us because you looked like even more of a prick since it backfired on you. next time i will piss on the counter read more

I have been to the haunted head twice now, and both times didn't make it through the door, because for some reason they don't allow black customers in there bar. Yes that's what I just said this is 2016, and we still have racist bars in oceanside. I hope someone that can make a difference reads this, and investigate this bar, because maybe you guys that runs that bar didn't realize, racial profiling is illegal. This needs to get fixed. Left a bad review for this dump some time ago and tried to give them another chance. This time, the lady wanted to check my I.D. I'm 71 f-ing years old. She wanted me to take it out of my wallet. I asked why they need to look at my I.D. and she said it was "house rules"????? So, I got out of the dirty bar stool and walked 200 feet across the street to Finneys. Haunted has been around a long time, but they should realize there is competition on EVERY CORNER. And, there was no one in the dirty dump. read more

Even the bouncer( big blond guy with a beard) stayed and got drunk and was making out with his girlfriend while off duty and started yelling at a beautiful blond at the bar.. the bartender had to break it off .. Food was great and I would leave a 5 star but the women's bathroom situation is horrible (only separated by curtains like we're in the MIDDLE AGES... But maybe that's the point) either way, I endured a very embarrassing situation when I walked in on someone. I love love love old bars with lots of character! There are several in Oceanside like the PCH Sport Bar and Grill and Pier View Bar & Grill... It's just a fabulous place to have a cocktail during the Sunset Market ... going on just outside the bar...every Thursday night! We've watched football games and played pool here too. The bar itself is enjoyable. However, when you factor in the unruly, disrespectful, Marines who are suppossed to carry themselves respectably, go to a bar outside of Oceanside. People say it's a good dive bar. It's not a dive bar it's a shit bar full of shit staff and shit people. A Halloween themed shit bar that operates, and we'll use the term loosely, year round. It pretty much summons the spirit of hill street from the 90's. Way to go. read more

Dan went out to the courtyard to dance to Toga Party band... This rude woman insisted on Dan's seat, even after we told her there was someone sitting there... his drink still on the bar... she pushed it off to the side, spilling the beer and sat halfway on the seat... she didn't care and said something like, if he isn't here, the seat is open and ordered a beer for her and her friend. My friend and I let it go because she was so aggressive and drunk, we really didn't want a confrontation. Dan eventually came back from dancing (probably less than 4 minutes). BTW, there was no seating outside, so this was our only option as we arrived when the band started playing. Dan returned and explained to the woman he had been sitting there for over an hour, and wanted to finish his beer and take back his seat... she started calling him all kinds of ludicrous names and talking BS! He sat halfway on the stool, (she was on the other half) standing his ground but not responding to her verbal assault) and my friend told me she was saying all kinds of really mean stuff to him... I couldn't hear because I was on her other side... the restaurant was loud, as most restaurants are are around 8 pm. The bartender was great! When he realized what was happening and tried to reason with her to be a nice human, he finally realized she would not choose that path and pulled the 2 ladies drinks (from her friend as well) and said... "you're outta here, don't make me call security". (obviously after trying to speak to her calmly)... but she persisted until security was called to escort her out. She called him a racist, which he was defiantly NOT (she was Latina, but she was trying to use any excuses for her bad behavior). THEN... I wish I was done!!! Her sister came over about 10 minutes later... ordered a beer and continued to berate Dan. Literally staring him down like she was going to end him!!! She asked him aggressive, leading questions... not trying to get to the truth, but to defend her sister, so I chimed in to speak reason, (which didn't inflame the situation, but did not change her attitude at all) My friend told me even her own brother was trying to get her to walk away... the bartender realized what was happening and pulled the her drink off the bar and kicked her out and said, everyone with you needs to leave! Security came promptly and they left. I gotta say, her brother came back and paid for the drinks (they were almost full when the staff pulled them)... he was embarrassed and apologized to us all, he was nice and made an effort to be reasonable. Ultimately, the staff was very busy, but when they realized what was happening, they were on it!!! the staff will help take care of you.... Especially in the summertime when you don't know what kind of crazy drunk people show up. They even bought Dan a beer for having to endure the berating... (he almost left) and was a great sport and did not instigate her toxicity. I've been coming to see live music here for decades with friends and never experienced this before. Security and the bartenders took care of us when they realized what was happening. Overall, a great time and knowing that the staff has your back will make me be even more inclined to come back! I must say this was a rare event and I'm so thankful for the professionalism of the staff. Red Rooster sports bar has been serving the community of Oceanside for over 60 years. Even though they recently had a change of ownership, the new owners are also local and they left local management in charge. This effectively means that nothing has changed, and they are still providing some of the best bar, food and ambience, as well as drinks! They just cleaned up the bathrooms and a little bit of the interior decor. When it comes to food, the Red Rooster is known for their famous Rooster Burger. This burger is legendary within the community. I also love their crispy fries that are well seasoned. More recently, they have also added $.69 chicken wings on Wednesdays. This deal is available with the purchase of a beer. They also have cider available as well. Although they have a few basic flavors on their regular chicken wing menu, on Wednesdays, they add a lot more flavors to the special. These sauce, flavors alternate weekly, and it adds a nice variety. Most recently, I enjoyed the teriyaki, the bourbon bbq, honey mustard, general tso and my favorite is the lemon pepper. The interior looks much like a divey sports bar, equipped with one pool table and a few high-table seating available. There is also a backyard seating area with a fire pit, that is also fenced off. Overall, I highly recommend visiting the Red Rooster at least once to experience their burger, their chicken wings, and a small piece of historic Oceanside vibes.
