We stopped by The Hearth after dinner for some drinks and to play a couple games of pool. Really nice bartender and reasonable prices. The pool table is in a separate room which was surprisingly nice, and each game is only a quarter! Wasn't really crowded at 7pm, so we were able to play four games uninterrupted. Finally found the perfect local bar. Staff is friendly and accommodating. This is THE neighborhood bar if you live in the Richmond and if not and live in city at all i'd highly recommend this bar. Great neighborhood corner bar, that's been in the same spot for over half a century. A mixed crowd - young and old, the regulars and passers through. This little public house is definitely a locals hangout. A dimly lit shotgun style layout, with a long row of bench seats with a few table tops to the left when you walk in and the bar counter and bar stools to the right. A couple of tvs in opposite corners have sports going on them. The bar is Cash Only. There's also a small pool table area with darts and a few seats behind the bar to the right, in a separate room. The night of our visit, we walked over from where we had our dinner and were pleasantly surprised. A warm and friendly environment, the bartender made us feel right at home. She smiled and made light conversation while preparing our drinks. A short bus ride from the Golden Gate Bridge. A quick Yelp search brought me to the Hearth after I saw it in my touristy San Fran book. The beers are cheap, so that was a plus. Being inside The Hearth makes me feel like I'm in some kind of reinforced observation bunker at a nuclear test site deep in the Nevada desert. Drab, brown walls with sparse decor complimented by a horizontal slit-like window facing Geary street reinforce this feeling. Only a bar with multiple taps, a Nixonian-era stucco ceiling, and the lack of Apache tan paint hinders ones imagination from going back to the Kruchev-era cold war days, peering out the window, and envisioning a fifteen-kiloton warhead forming a mushroom cloud over a vast expanse of lifeless desert. Bud, Lagunitas IPA, and Sierra Nevada fill out the selection of beer on tap. The liquor selection is on par with the average neighborhood bar, but run for cover if you're into wine. All I saw was were individual glass-sized bottles of Sutter Home in both red and white flavors. A sizable dart room sits in a separate area to the rear of the bar, and a 2005 Golden Tee beckons to virtual golfers. Small TV's show sports. Last time I was there, the regulars were rapt in watching PGA Golf while Phil Mickelson melted down on the 18th hole and Geoff Oglilvy won it with a five under. Music is off during sporting events, but at night the jukebox fires up to crank out an inconceivably ghastly mix of cheeseball-rock from the 70's. On a positive note, the music is well modulated and never too loud. Hungry? Several restaurants lie within walking distance, and a Jack-in-the-Box with it's hearty selection of 99-cent items sits right across the street. I've been here three times...the crowd has always been predominantly male with a mean age of about 50 and a standard deviation of 6. Patrons are generally easy going, well behaved, and fairly talkative. A regular told me that verbal spats happen from time to time, but fights are extremely rare. If you're in the area and not into noise, crowds or boisterous college students, it's you're best option without walking 6 blocks down Geary Street to McKenzie's or he Nag's Head. If you're objective is to kick back, then pull up a barstool. If you're out to raise Cain, then head east about four blocks.... read more

Its always fun to sit on the side to play some of the games. The only thing that kinda sucks is the size of the place. My favorite neighborhood bar is back. They've reopened during the pandemic with a nice outdoor parklet with more than enough room for social distancing and heaters to keep you toasty. They've also teamed up with the Salvadorian restaurant next door and their food is amazing. The bartender who is always there let me know that he received his vaccination which makes me feel completely safe. There was a girl on there that worked at Hearth and one time two of us, I was in a band with another SF Net user, went to go visit her and she was stunningly beautiful. So far out of my league that even then, when I was close to my prime, I didn't bother to try to get to know her better. She was so perfect that it actually made me kind of angry. There was this one time when I was a young kid, when my granddad took me to his local watering hole. Apparently this is acceptable behavior in Nebraska. Maybe it was so he could show me off to his best friends. Maybe it was so he could show me where he interrogated my dad about his intentions with my mom when she brought him home for the first time. Maybe it was just to rile up his daughter who lectured him about the inappropriateness of bringing a toddler to a bar. Regardless, I believe if you were important to my grandfather in any way, he showed you by bringing you to his drinking spot. It was nothing fancy, dark wood paneling, little natural light, a pool table, darts, strong drinks (not that I remember, I was just a kid....but I imagine them to be) and a group of older men who mostly caught up on the day, but depending on how the day went may have exchanged a harsh word or two from time to time. I have had an image in my head of this place ever since that day. Since all of my cousins are now married and my grandparents are in a better place I don't envision I will be heading back to Nebraska for any reason.......ever! As a result I thought that I would never see this bar again. I was wrong. It has moved to San Francisco. It is on Geary Blvd and it is called The Hearth. We have a trusty set of local pubs, and we're guaranteed to run into more than a few other regulars on any given night at any one of them, and end up w an impromptu Session with a group of characters lasting well into the night. This is good, no? No. Not when it seems like the two of you hadn't seen eachother, really SEEN eachother, in forever and you just want to relax in a dark pub and focus on the collective You. Not when you just want a low-key night, no distractions. Project Secret Bar. Something understated, relatively close, dark, divey, heavy handed bartender. We had a Secret Bar out in the Sunset for a few weeks, but an unfortunate slip of the tongue one night resulted in the group of boys rounding up and heading on over. Done. We'd suggest new Secret Bar places to eachother, and just as quickly shoot them down. The one on Taraval? No, whatshisname is there for sure. The one 3 blocks over? Umm, no, M just moved into a place across the street, guess what his new local is. Around the Corner? Umm, are you serious? At least 4 of them are there at some point every night. The one down Geary? Yeah, umm, I can't go there, had somewhat of an incident w a bartender there one night... Long before I met you, but still. Oh. Hey, what about that weird looking little place at like 11th or something, looks like it's straight outta some small town about 50 years ago... I see it from the bus... THE HEARTH. The Hearth. Nobody will ever look for us there. And they didn't. And the two end/corner stools were open, just waiting for us to stake our usual claim. Texi (Texie?) was great, treated us like we'd been locals for years from the minute we sat down, nicely poured vodka sodas, good balance of chit-chat and leaving us be. There is nothing outstanding about this bar. It's a drinkers bar. Yes, there are diversions for those wanting activities with their drink, but these are cleverly kept away from the bar. YES! I finally made it to The Hearth after 7 years in the Richmond! And it turned out even cooler than I thought it'd be. After having a few drinks at Hukilau, I conviced my buddy to come with me down the street to check out The Hearth. Now, I've heard many a story about The Hearth (none of them terribly odious) and for some reason, I never bothered to check it out ("It's just another dive bar, dude"). I also heard they'd recently given the place a make-over so I had more incentive to check it out. First of all, I like the interior and especially the red lighting (maybe it reminds me a bit of the Ruby Room in the East Bay). The set up is great, - a modest-sized bar with small tables lining the side wall and a parallel room with a pool table. It's just the perfect size for a small local bar. The bartender was a sweetie too (my buddy happened to know her sister by chance) and we all got along until the final crash of the gong was banged at 2am. I have a feeling that I'll be visiting The Hearth more often and given it a 5 star rating in the near future. read more

As far as neighborhood pubs go, this is one of my favorites. I pass by a dozen other bars on my regular trek here. So what makes this place so special? Is it the alcohol selection? No. Beer selection? Definitely not. The Jukebox? Pool table? Dartboard? Ms Pacman machine? I definitely enjoy those things but that's not it either. The customers here are regulars, there's zero ego (clientele and staff), and the location keeps the Bay Area yahoo hipster duds at bay. Since my old review was "flagged by the community" (ha!) and "not in line with Yelp review guidelines" (bwahahaha)....by the way, do you people really have time to flag reviews?!? Get a job!...I'm re-writing my review, and hope that you will find this to be more in line with the "guidelines" and "rules regarding relevancy". The Hearth is a run down old dive bar that once upon a time a really jerky guy my friend was dating tried to tongue kiss me in, in front of her and the rest of the free Yelp world. Yucky, yucky. All that aside, and to avoid further flagging, I will tell you more about the Hearth itself. It's musty, dusty, and it's likely you'll get locked in the bathroom. The bar staff are mostly fun, friendly, and all-around decent people. The crowd runs the gammut from crusty old seamen to blue collar Irish construction workers/movers to hipsters to yuppy-cupcake-princesses like myself to just-general-drunks-and-degenerates. See!? We all belong! The Hearth's not so bad after all. Except when whiney little weasels like Nancy's then-man happen to show up and ruin this awesome spot for the rest of us. I'm pretty sure there's a back room too with a pool table, but I fall somewhere between yuppy-cupcake-princess and just-general-drunk after midnight, so who really knows? read more

I've only been here twice, once about 6 months ago, once recently. The second time I went in Texi (or Texie? not sure how to spell it) and I instantly remembered her and thought to myself "oh I LIKE you- you were the nice, friendly, sweet, personable bartender from last time I was here! Yay! " It doesn't hurt that the place is close to me .. and that I happen to feel pretty comfortable in divey sort of bars. I'd say Hearth goes into the "friendly easy neighborhood place" category. Yes, there are quite a few old men in ths bar, but also many younger people who probably live in the area.
