The chicken livers were over fried, baked beans was one step above just out of the can, cold slaw was pitiful. My wife's chicken breast was about the size of a pigeons and the crust was minimal. The gravy and mashed potatoes were super good and I'm very finicky about gravy so for me to say that speaks volumes! The chicken is pretty good though. Sign claims it's the world's best fried chicken. Now I wouldn't go that far but it's pretty darn good. Juicy inside, crispy skin, and not overly greasy. Pair that with some mashed potatoes covered in chicken gravy and you've got an affordable and tasty dinner that you didn't have to cook. Order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you. My first 3 attempts to eat her, couldn't find it, to flood and then to closed for clean up. Today I made it and had some fried chicken. I've never been more disappointed in a joint in my life. It had been a long time since we were here but even with all of that time the chicken was as good as ever. With the unfortunate closing of Colonial Cottage in Erlanger I would say that Hitching Post has my favourite fried chicken (I mean their building says "World's Best Fried Chicken"). The breading has such awesome flavour and the chicken itself is so juicy I just can't think of anyplace else that does it better. Unfortunately their mashed potatoes and gravy don't measure up to the chicken as I feel like this was a poor take on those. The potatoes reminded of like instant mashed potatoes and the gravy was lackluster also. The dinner roll was great though. All of this food is still very affordable, the restaurant is small but clean, and the service is always great. The best fried chicken in Kentucky is north of the border in Cincinnatti! We've had our share of fried chicken and hands down, this is the best we've had anywhere in the country. Not only that, the sides were excellent, too. We went with the 9-piece with green beans, mashed potatoes and rolls. We even had a small side salad to boot. A diner feel for sure. The food was just ok to me but there were a lot of people there and they must do a booming carry out business. There weren't a lot of tables and it was a questionable walk down a weird hallway to wash my hands. I was kind of disappointed in our food. We each had a 2 piece chicken meal with 2 sides. We both had mashed potatoes. My partner had green beans and I had Cole slaw. The total for the meal was very reasonable. I passed the kitchen on the way to the hand washing sink and I passed the chicken laying under a heat lamp. After everything we had heard, I was rather disappointed by the meal. read more

Today I was craving some home style cooking. Particularly fried chicken and mashed potatoes and I remembered The Hitching Post existed. My boyfriend and I headed down Kellogg Ave until we saw the infamous sign. Put our masks on and went inside. We were just going to get take out but they had a booth for us off to the side behind a wall away from everyone else, so we decided to stay and eat. The Hitching Post has everything you could ever want in a greasy spoon. A giant and eclectic menu of everything from fried chicken, hamburgers, breakfast foods and pie. Do I dare say The American Dream? I do. I do dare to say that it quintessential American food. The fried chicken is always the best. But everything here is delicious. I enjoy coming here when I want to go a little off the grid. Get away from downtown for a lunch or afternoon. It's a pretty cozy place. Old school brown wooden booths and diner style dessert cases. All that dreamy interior we all require from our old fashioned restaurants. That we appreciate so much. Not to be forgotten or looked over is everyone who works here is really nice and hospitable. Checking in on us constantly to see if we need anything. Offering to fill our cups to go. I love that. The only reason I'm giving them 4 out of 5 stars is because during the pandemic they aren't doing that great of job with following the new standards for crowd control and cleaning. Which I'm sure is hard to do when they're busy and only have six tables. When we sat down at our table it wasn't cleaned off from whomever sat there before. Which they should be spraying booths/seats/tables down after every guest. Also at one point I looked over into the main area and they had all the available tables full, plus six people standing in line for take out. There is no way any of those people were six feet apart. They just need to have a limit to how many people can come in at once and make people wait outside and cycle in and out. I'll probably just do take out next time until all this is over. The breakfast food here is just excellent for a mom and pop type restaurant. In my opinion, the east side of Cincinnati could use more down home, hole in the wall, breakfast diner type establishments. This is why I'm fond of the Hitching Post, because it is one of few. The goetta is served deliciously, with a heaping portion. The rye toast is excellent and their eggs are cooked to perfection. Add their hot sauce to your home fries and you have a wonderful down home breakfast meal for $6. A total bargain. The store itself is tiny, which is a major downfall. On a Saturday morning, we were lucky to grab the last spot in the back corner of the diner. Shortly after, the line filled out the door of people with orders. There was no spot for any of them to sit. We got lucky with our timing. It's an old building. There is no fancy paint or decor, it's truck stop-ish. Yet, the cooks and the ladies taking orders are wonderful. I love seeing young, possibly teenage boys in the back cooking. The work ethic is strong here! Our food was packed and ready for takeout in less than 10 minutes. Both of the meals had large servings for around $10. The country fried steak was two chicken tenders covered in gravy. The chicken was not processed or pressed. They were cut up chicken breasts. It was chicken like you would have if you made it at home. The chicken was crispy, but we both agreed it could have used more seasoning. The green beans were delicious and well seasoned. My only complaint was that my entire meal was in one to-go tray without dividers. The green bean juice was not contained. Luckily, we were only a few minutes away so I just tried to separate them. Next time, I will try a burger and onion rings. They looked amazing. They have a large variety of sides and delectable looking desserts. World's best fried chicken? I was skeptical, until I tried it. I've had the fried chicken at Greyhound, Tousey House, Eagle, and Colonial Cottage, and none of them comes close to Hitching Post.
