Bella who I'm sure everyone knows was the kindest and warmest bartender I've ever met in my life! She was so sweet and made us feel right at home and even let us hold her puppy! TERRIBLE SERVICE a buddy and I recently were in the area and decided to pop in after seeing a $1 dollar beer and any shot offer on a chalkboard stand right outside the establishment. Given, we had a few beers but were excited to try the shot and beer deal. One would think that if you ordered two beers and two shots and mentioned the deal that you would be taken care of. My partner and I love a good a cocktail. We have enjoyed many from other local bars, but nothing beats a CLASSIC WELL-DONE COCKTAIL! The Homestead always delivers, the bartenders know how to make a classic balanced drink. My go-to is a last word and it is always executed to perfection! Living in the mission I always pass by this place and was always curious. Finally stopped by and I loved the intimate yet also relaxed vibes. Good lighting and a beautiful bar are the highlights of this spot. Not too big of a bar but a perfect spot to go grab a round with friends or a drink before dinner. They also have a private room that seemed like you could rent out for events. I only had one drink a whiskey sour of sorts and it was great. read more

This place has such a cool vibe. There's lots of pretty naked women paintings on the wall which I would NEVER complain about. I believe it is an ode to the brothel that used to run upstairs but I'm just guessing. There's a really amazing history to the place including murder! An old owner came back and robbed and murdered the new owner. So crazy. The bar tender was really nice and he was very Michael Vera vibes. They have peanuts which is so fun. They were out when I went but they normally have them. If you're looking for a fun haunted bar with a rich and long history this is a great place to go. read more

I've been living in this area since February and it was my first time giving it a try. I wasn't sure if I should've felt out of place, as it looks like a standard bar with regular cocktail prices but the more I spoke with the bartender the more confused I got. Given I work nightlife as well so I understand how small talk can be frustrating but it was a Tuesday, pretty slow with maybe a handful of regulars. First interactions: "Hey how are you?" "Eh I got bad news today but it's ok I'm Exploring my neighborhood and we shall see." "Right on here's the list maybe I can help you out " (or something like that.) But then I started asking about late night food around the area. He stated he didn't know what options could be open late but then referred to the gas station chicken spot up the street as "Hoe Station Chicken". As I mentioned I live nearby I know of most spots and was on Yelp to even check out more upscale places for dinner that were open within 5 min walking. So this is where I was confused, as a bartender in the middle of the mission to be classist and clearly acting on some white entitlement thought it was ok to refer to the prostitution corner near this place. But also making me feel like I was out of place like I couldn't afford any of the closer places or HELLLLLOO a taqueria like was it meant to be funny or make me feel uncomfortable. In the social climate of now I would hope white people can be more careful with their words and let us not forget their place of easily saying things like that in the middle of a poverty area that they build to their liking. So idk if I look Latina or not or super young or what but if I try again I will make sure I will bring POC, young, and fun and hope to be welcomed. Businesses are closing everywhere so if you plan to keep the lights on just by renting it out for fantasy football dudes in the back and not being welcoming to up and coming people of color perhaps you need to relocate from the Mission. read more

I rate this bar an 11/10. More specifically, I give the bartender named Bella an 11/10. Me and my friends were there on a Saturday night and had the honor of being serviced by Bella. She not only makes sure our drinks are filled 24/7, but also has the most fun attitude and ensures you are having a fun time. Never write reviews, but the shadiness of one bartender last week feels necessary to share. We quickly left the bar because of the rudeness of one bartender, as a result of her behavior we tipped low for low-quality service. A couple of days later, we noticed that our bank statement was higher than the tip we left. I cannot say with 100% confidence that the bartender forged the tip, but I think it's safe to assume when we have our copy of the receipt, and we know exactly what we tipped, the evidence is pretty damning. Not cool at all and was reported to our bank as fraud. Not a crime to be rude and provide terrible service, but I write this review to simply share the illegal behavior we experienced. read more

We're long time fans of The Homestead and recently have made it a regular Sunday night hangout because Isabella is behind the bar, making everyone feel at home while mixing perfect cocktails. Last night, we celebrated my wife's birthday there and invited a bunch of friends , many who were first timers, to join us. COVID takeout Literally so excited that this place does cocktails to go. I am a huge fan. They're reasonably priced for cocktails but they not only make a strong drink, it comes in a nifty cup and straw to go. We came to this bar because it was recommended by my sister, who is a drinker. I only socialize and drink, but growing up with my sister, she always knew her alcohol, and she always has good taste in wine liquor. So, we wanted to take my brother here because they wanted to try some specialty beers that they have. Don't ask me cuz I'm not familiar with any kind of alcohol or beer. Only one which is a little too strong for me unless it's a light beer Guinness. I will drink it now the beer. I do like Japanese Sapporo. I'm not sure what the other name is for the other Japanese beer, but I also like Belgian beer which is Stella. It's light. It's crisp. They also had a Christmas blend beer which I didn't get to taste, but I heard that my sister in law and brother liked it had a little cinnamon and some other spices little flavors in it. They enjoyed the beers that they ordered: Hammerstein Guinness, some Christmas blend, and Stella beer. Oh one more thing there was a fireplace and we SAT right next to it so we were very warm and cozy, and they also give you a basket of peanuts which you can conversating while drinking your beer. This is the kind of bar I would have frequented in New Orleans. This is a good thing. While, yes, the hipster-to-normal-person ration was violently askew, ask yourself, "Self: where are you?" Get the answer. Go back to doing what you were doing. Now, with such a popular venue, it may be difficult to find a place to rest your tired legs. If so, simply do what I did: growl at the fellows lazing about four seats (2 guys, 4 seats; is this a new internet meme?) at the bar until they get uncomfortable (read: scared) and they leave. Problem solved. Even though the bar tends to fall on the crowded side of the aisle, it's not so loud that you can't spend some quality time catching up with one of your best friends in the world. I found the bartender to be pretty cool. He wasn't overly chatty but he was attentive, polite and d@mn good at his job. I started the evening with a Blood & Sand -- because they make me feel fancybroody. This one was expertly made. The scotch was the star of the show but the liqueur brightened it up enough to make it dangerously drinkable. The vermouth added to the aromatic quality of the drink and the blood orange just makes it look cool. After a couple of those, I decided to switch to beer because I had to work in the morning and calling in sick wasn't an option. But besides the skill behind the bar, cool vibe and relaxed scene, my favorite element of The Homestead is the Scooby Doo quality. On a laid back Friday night with friends, there's nothing better than rolling into a bar and discovering it's exactly the place you want to be. We ambled up at 9pm, pleased that it was on a quiet street and there wasn't a line out the door. I told the bouncer that I was 101 years old, but he checked my ID anyway (and said I looked good for my age). Amazingly, it wasn't too crowded, and we managed to snag a table right next to the upright piano, which was serving as a drink-stand. It reportedly gets its keys tickled every so often, so I didn't feel too bad for it. Homestead has a great collection of beers, including big bottles of Belgian blondes, and they make fantastic mixed drinks. For $1 you can tuck into a deep bowl of peanuts, smoky and salty. Cracking them open while chatting with friends has to be one of the most satisfying bar activities, aside from petting the wayward pooch that makes its way under your table and allows you to scratch it behind the ears. There's something uniquely comforting about the luxurious velvet drapes, beautiful wallpaper, antique tin roof and paintings of nudes; it brings class to a bar that would otherwise be a dive. Said my friend, "Would it be porn if those were photos instead of paintings? Such a fine line..." Beware, as the back room is reserved and you may get booted; otherwise, the crowd is fun and friendly. It's not hard to get a drink, even when the bar does get crowded (at around 10:30pm), and there's a warmth in this Homestead that is hard to beat on those cold SF nights! read more

Came here on a Wednesday night for a birthday. Crappy neighborhood bar. Pros: 1) Water - water and cups you can pour for yourself 2) Beer- about a dozen beers on draft Cons: 1) Service - While not very crowded, bartenders were very lackadaisical, clearly priorizing finishing a conversation with a coworkers over serving the person in front of them 2) Homeless people in the bar - homeless people just stroll into the bar. There were at least two homeless people that strolled in 3) Other people at the bar - had a weird experience where some locals wanted to take seats we were kind of using $6 beer is not bad but not a steal. OK, couldn't decide but I definitely think this is a 5-star place. Drinks are cheap ($5 for top-shelf liquors), service is fast, vibe is good. Plenty of places to sit - lots of stools by the bar and tables along the other side of the bar...and in the back. I remember coming to this bar ages and ages ago when it was a different bar, and the decor is so much better. The decor is muted and understated but really nice. There isn't much in the neighborhood which makes this place a destination for anybody who doesn't live in the area, but on a positive note, there was a ton of parking when we went on a Friday night! read more

EXTREMELY dog friendly place. It's got a nice feel to it, vintage decorations, and they make some really good cocktails. If you're a beer lover, they've got some good ones on tap at really reasonable prices. But that's not fully why I go there. I go there because the staff and regulars from the neighborhood are fantastic people. I also get to bring my dog and she gets TONS of love. I really really wanted to like this place. I'm a sucker for dive bars and old timey ones at that -- dark wood, stamped tin ceilings, etc etc. But the open dogs policy has gotten out of control. When we first arrived, one cute lassie type running around. Then a pit bull and a giant poodle and more -- and the dogs kept snarling and leaping at each other. Their owners obliviously sat there as the dogs nipped in the air at the chair my friend was sitting in, eventually driving her to leave. Another friend's eyes turned bright red from the allergies to dogs, though she tried to stick it out for my sake. And yet these are the same kind of hipsters who would whine about babies in the restaurants. Hypocrites! Dogs in bars are cool, if they are under control. read more

I live pretty much right next door so I thought this would be my neighborhood bar hang-out. I don't think get why it has such a high rating. Very hipster-ish and I guess that's why it has a high rating in the Mission. It has 4-5 tables inside, and bar stools. I think it would be hard for a big group to gather there, unless they rent the back room (which I heard is cheap - $20/hour). Cool thing - peanuts you get to throw on the floor and HH on Monday nights where it's $1 cans of cheap beer and cheap wells (maybe $3?) They also bake pizzas outside on Thursday nights (maybe not every Thursday, but I've seen it a bunch) but I think they are almost $10 for a personal pizza. I guess good to go if your not looking for a crazy night and just want to chill with a friend over a few beers. read more

When I lived in the mission the Homestead was my favorite neighborhood bar. With a friendly staff and cheap beer ($2 Tecate on tap and cans of PBR) you really can't beat it! The Homestead is also one of the rare bars in the mission that accepts credit cards. Yay! read more
