If you have ever been to Hawaii or have had legit Hawaiian food, DO NOT go here! If I was just rating the food, I would give it negative stars. Two stars is for the ambiance and service. The hostess was super friendly and welcoming and the outdoor seating was lovely. That's about it for the pros. My husband and I ordered the Mixed Plate and the Ahi tuna. First of all, the "sushi rice" was an "Uncle Ben" type rice = yuck! (They could at least get the rice right). The huli chicken was made with some sort of BBQ sauce! The potato mac, although not Hawaiian style at all, tasted ok and the Kalua pig wasn't bad either. However, the portions were small and overpriced. Spent the day at Honeymoon Island and decided to come into Dunedin for some lunch. I completely forgot about spring break and the seafood festival going on this weekend so I was little stressed about finding parking and a place to eat without a wait. We'd been meaning to try The Honu for some time and I'm glad this was our chance! We sat outside at one of the many tables and enjoyed a Hawaiian iced tea - this should not be missed! It was delicious with pineapple and lemon. I need the recipe because I would drink this all day if I could. I have been to Hawaii before for work and I love poke. Their's is the perfect appetizer and the rice on the bottom is warm and flavorful, even my boyfriend loved it and he's kind of iffy on raw fish. I ordered the NeNe burger which is a turkey burger with micro greens and goat cream cheese with a side of purple potatoes. The burger was perfect and while the purple potatoes were a little earthy tasting, I loved it, great addition to the meal and something different. My boyfriend had the chicken sandwich and added a piece of grilled pineapple with sweet potatoes fries and some red pepper vegan dipping sauce. All in all the food was great and the service was warm and efficient. So happy to find a chill and relaxing place for lunch on a busy weekend in downtown Dunedin and we will definitely be back with friends/family from out of town. read more

I have given this place so many chances. I love that it is local . I love the location. I love the atmosphere. The drinks are pretty yummy too. The food is at best sub par. That is being nice. The food is over priced, tasteless and not good. I've tried salmon, fish of the day, guacamole, nachos and all of them were awful. Even though we arrived sort of late and the kitchen was going to be closing within about 30 minutes, we still received excellent service and the food was great. My husband and I both really love Hawaii and have spent a few weeks there just recently. The decor at this restaurant and bar is so amazing! I love the atmosphere at this restaurant and the drinks are creative harkening back to the golden age of Tiki in the 50s but the prices are very high, very un-1950s. I think they have kind of jumped the shark on the prices with drinks from 15 to 17 dollars on the special holiday menu. That is another odd thing in that since they had this holiday menu most of the normal tiki drinks were not available to order which is odd seeing we are talking about cocktails and not food. The service is OK, not great but adequate. I loved going to this place in the past because of the classic cocktail list so I would say cut by the holiday list to two or three offerings and keep the core amazing cocktail list. A small thing was that my garnish on both of my drinks was not the freshest but at $15 to $17 a drink I think it is not an entirely unreasonable thing to have pineapple that is not brown. I am pulling for this place because I do love the decor but it could just so expensive that it is no longer a viable option for a night out. read more

If you're looking for a great dog-friendly place in Dunedin with a unique menu, you should definitely give The Honu a shot! While here on lunch we shared the veggie nachos (added shredded steak!) and a turkey burger. Both meals were really great and had some awesome Hawaiian inspired flavors! The Honu is seriously one of my favorite places in Dunedin. It's a go to this summer with their perfect outdoor seating and delicious food. We try to go at least once a week. I think I went to the other location in Ozona years ago but I don't quite remember liking it. I think I ordered something hella healthy. That was the problem, for this time I got a burger & fries. Old mistakes made right. Burger was delicious - especially the bun! And the fries were hand cut salty goodness. Service was on point & we sat outside to help minimize that 'rona. I've now been here for both lunch and dinner and enjoyed the experience both times. Service is friendly and timely. The menu is interesting and has a lot of healthy options, and the food is very fresh tasting. For dinner I had the Kilauea with Pele sauce. The sauce has a really nice kick to it, and the meal portion was plenty for dinner plus leftovers. I also tried my friend's spam sushi roll (kid you not, it was really good - try it!) For lunch I had the Nene (Turkey) Burger with the daily cole slaw (wasabi pea that particular day). Both were amazing and the right size portion for lunch. Cute little spot nestled away in Dunedin. I thought some of the decor was a little much... it looked like Hilo Hattie's threw up in there (too over the top for me). I was with a group of three, we were seated immediately. The entire time we were there (mind you we got there at six), we were the only people there the entire experience. It freaked me out too because there wasn't music playing. You would expect a restaurant to be near full or at least close to capacity between 6-7PM? Whatever. We started with the nachos and added pork. They were good- we finished the plate. It was Taco Tuesday so all of the tacos were half off! The tacos come in twos I believe and they are a la carte. I ordered the shrimp tacos! They were great! I feel like Florida kind of sucks at the whole Mexican taco game (which is weird because of where Florida is on the map) but these tacos hit different. The shrimp was cooked to perfection; seasoned and juicy and HOT. I LOVE when my food comes out hot but you'd be surprised how often it doesn't (LOL). They also warm the tortillas and I believe mine was finished on the grill because it hard that warm crunch to it. Not a crunch even... it just crisps up the shell enough to where it doesn't get too soggy! This place is a cute little gem. I used to go to a Hawaiian food joint right next to my college several times a week. Now The Honu has a better environment and certainly friendlier staff in a great location as well as some great menu items, but I was a bit disappointed with the size of the Musubi. They were good, just smaller than I'm used to. The nachos were not your average nachos. They were great! I wouldn't mind going back to this location to try other items, but when I want a Musubi I'll be looking for a different location. Hope to see you soon The Honu. read more

A fun experience. I cannot comment on the inside of the restaurant, but the Tiki bar was pleasant. Ryan, our bartender/server was very accommodating as my wife has a food allergy. The decour was fun, with parrots and tikis statues everywhere. I had a Zombie to drink, which was plenty strong and still delicious. The Musubi (spam wrapped with rice in seaweed) was a great way to start the meal. My wife had a green curry soup with shrimp (outstanding!) and I had the fire dancer plate (also very good). We finished up with the Kona brownie (delicious). Overall, a nice time on a beautiful evening. I cannot wait to return and try more delicious food and drink! read more

I was disappointed being a vegan myself the spring rolls are fried in the same grease as the pork egg rolls. That's no longer a vegan option . They list it as vegan though. I settled for a green curry dish that have vegetables in it that came with a side salad. It was $23.00. They up charged me $5 for something. Not sure what I didn't add a protein. My husband's chicken bacon salad was good he said. Our server never checked to see how it was or did we need anything. My husband went to the bar to ask for extra dressing. My wife and I have been wanting to try this place for quite awhile, what a big disappointment my wife ordered the daily special it had no flavor and the the vain still attached, I ordered the king kamehameha 3 types of meat and rice the meat was burnt and dry I told our waitress there way of fixing it was to put some sauce on it I also ordered some spicy sauce when I tried it it burnt all the way down when I mentioned it to our waitress she laughed and said yah it is made with ghost peppers, I love hot food but was never warned me that it was extremely hot. We had an amazing experience at The Honu! Although it was raining and the outdoor seating was closed, we enjoyed the cozy and warm homely atmosphere inside. I had the vegetarian white bean and sage burger with the bun. It was quite tasty and filling. The best part was that the patty was not deep fried and felt like eating at home and out at the same time. We also tried the coconut lime soup and although I really liked the flavor of coconut and strong lime, it is not for everyone (including my wife!) They have Maui brewery beers and I had the pineapple Mana wheat which was refreshing, light and not too hoppy, just what I wanted. My wife had a tipsy turtle drink which has sake. Because of the sake, the flavors are mellow and mild. We wish we had more space for dessert as the chocolate habanero cake seemed very interesting but we were quite full! They are a very environmentally friendly restaurant and don't use plastic containers or plastic straws. I love that about them. Will definitely be paying a visit again. Shhhh keep this to yourself. This is my go to in Dunedin for a fun off the chart dinner. I expect Guy Fieri and his red camero to be outside one evening. My appetizer of choice is the poke. Always fresh and seasoned perfectly. 3 recommendations from the menu are Dos Tacos w/ shrimp, king Kamehameha (be hungry), and the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa that's right you read that. Staff is friendly, drinks are great, happy hour is worth it, and usually there is music out side. 5 stars don't come easy by me but I do love this place read more

Our first time here. Unbelievably unique and DELICIOUS. The ambience is really fun. The service was perfect. We had an incredible meal. We started off with the agave pork nachos - unlike any nachos I've ever had. The flavor was so different, bu so perfect. The pork was tender and nice and lean. There was some sort of delicious yellow and white sauce that just made the dish. My husband got the fire dancing plate with shrimp - again, brand new to us flavors and out of this world. I got the goat cheese and beet salad with shredded chicken and one of the best dressings I've ever had. I think it was the ginger pineapple or cilantro lime - whichever it was it was great. We had the dos tacos, the Kilauea plate and the fruit infused alkaline water. All was amazing but the Kilauea plate was the best dish I've had in awhile. Went for drinks and appetizers. Sat at the bar and was nicely welcomed and attended to. Had the Scorpion (split it) and a Zombie. My girlfriend had a Mai Tai and a Sangria. Drinks are delicious, strong and well-made. Bartenders were friendly and answered any questions we had. We also ate a salad with Huli-Huli chicken and the Pupu platter. Food was delicious and served rather quickly. The Beef Bulgogi skewers and the ribs should be on the menu on their own. Will definitely be back. read more

VEGAN TIKI TIME! I got some bad news at the DR and decided to celebrate at The Honu. I am so glad I did! I have eaten off their food truck back in the day and they make a addictive pineapple habanero salsa. I would buy it by the bucket load if they sold it! First time on the Tiki patio! My attentive server started me off with the Polynesian pearl drink (for 2) I drank it all by my self. It was fantastic, everything I thought I would want in a Tiki drink. Fruity and refreshing and hit the spot, it's glorious. We got the tiki trio and the veggie spring rolls to start. I got the PELE sauce to try and loved it. Sorta like a spicy certain generals sauce. I killed the pineapple salsa! The other salsas, pico and guac were perfect. I got the white bean, sage, kalamata olive patty, it was flavorful and substantial. The blueberry salad dressing was my favorite of the 2 we tried. The Coconut green curry was fantastic, just the perfect level of spice. Crunchy beans were a textural surprise. I followed it up with the Pele's revenge cocktail. Nice spice on that too. YAY for Vegan food. I brought home the chicken sliders and the special rib sandwich of the day for the meat eater, he liked it.
