While looking for a nice place to eat in Poway, we stumbled upon The Hop Stop. The menu looked interesting, so we gave it a shot. I wish we hadn't. Aside from the bruskness of the bartender taking my order, the menu was incomplete. No potato tots due to a national shortage. No problem, I ordered fries which were okay. When asked for anything other than ketchup, I asked for fry sauce. She said they didn't have that, which then begged the question, "What do you have other than ketchup?" She then goes on to describe their own variation of fry sauce (1000 island, mayo, etc.). Okay, I like originality, but just agree that your fancy aioli is just fry sauce, and not that good. We then went outside to dine al fresco. The picnic table was very dirty, so I asked for a towel to clean it. A nice server said he would take care of it and promptly appeared to do so. When he finished, it was still visbly dirty. I wanted to take the rag and do it myself, but I decided to let it go like Elsa. Moving on, the draft selections were impressive. The pilsner was refreshing. Not a bad beer bar - just missing the big jar of pickled eggs. Back to the overpriced, disappointing food. The nachos would have been okay, but the fried ground beef was not drained before being poured over the chips. The result, a lake of ground beef drippings. The arugula salad w/ seared ahi was pretty good, but it was delivered after the first three entres staggered out of the kitchen. The bratwurst had a funky flavor, but the pickles were nice. The boneless wings had a weird texture and were also swimming in fryer oil. So, $100 later we were diappointed in our experience. Hope you have a better one. read more

I have to say that when a new place opens up locally near you, it creates a lot of excitement and you really hope it lives up to your expectations. Learned about The Hop Stop and finally was able to pay a visit after walking our dog across the street in old Poway Park. One couldn't ask for a better location, convenient and with a great layout. So much outdoor seating makes for a fantastic vibe and great space for families, pets owners and really anyone in general. A phenomenal selection of local craft beers on tap. Excited to go back and try the food items on the menu, as they look like they will be popular choices. Service was friendly and everyone was genuinely nice. Definitely a place where I will regularly visit. Anyone that lives in the area should celebrate having a gem like this nearby, but really everyone in the San Diego area should consider visiting as well. Thumbs up. Five stars. Great place for afternoon lunch and drinks. Hop Stop has excellent food and one of the best craft beer selections in Poway. The bartenders are personable and helpful. The restaurant is also perfectly suited for social distancing, with picnic tables set up outside, approx 10 feet apart outside. We (two grown men) split the Dirty Fries (highly recommend), the 'Merica burger (also excellent) and the meatball sandwich. Meatball sandwich was full of flavor though smaller than expected.  Good thing, we were both stuffed. Thrilled to have this outdoor venue close by, in the always quiet Poway Park area.  Looking forward to many more visits. read more

I wish the food were better. Some reviews suggest that it is "average pub food" but 1. I would disagree; I like pub food and I didn't like this; and 2. They bill themselves as "your local spot for craft beer and amazing food," and so they set expectations very high; they dot deliver. The dirty fries were terrible. They were supposed to come with "cheese fonduta" which sounded amazing. But when it arrived, all it had on it was the hop stop sauce (sort of a mayo thing). I tried to wait in line to see if they could fix it, and the lines were SO LONG, even if you had already been inside, so I gave up. Finally, I asked a server but they confirmed "no that is the cheese." So either the cheese and the mayo sauce are THE SAME or I was short changed the best part of the dish. Not worth $2 much less $10 The pizza was BLAND (channeling Gordon Ramsay here). No salt in the crust. How do you ruin a wood fired pizza?? I tried both the cheese and the veggie. The price is good, but it was a lot like eating cardboard. The kids grilled cheese.... $7. You get two slices of bread with a bit of cheese inside. No sides, nothing. Tiny portion. My kids, who are small, were still hungry. And again... $7??? The water they provide is in a TEENY TINY styrofoam cup. I was PARCHED. And drinking alcohol. Not a good mix. I did not want to wait in line for 20 minutes to get another thimblefull of water. I foresee issues with this situation in a pub. I was SO EXCITED to try this place. The website makes the menu look GREAT but it is not. Great atmosphere and selection of libations! Plenty of variety from beer, cider, kombucha, seltzer, and wine. The staff did a great job keep up with the afternoon lunch rush. Naked wings were ok, however the meatball sandwich was small with 4 little dry meatballs little to no sauce and cheese was non existent. Not sure how the meat was seasoned, but let's just say I won't be ordering it again. We will be back, but the food does need improvement as been mentioned in many reviews I read. read more

The Hop Stop - Beer Bar Near Me - Poway, California

I used to love this place, went often, but two recent experiences have significantly changed my opinion. First of of all the good, which has not changed. Their beer selection is excellent and the staff is wonderful. Now the bad...the owner has recently changed the food menu almost completely, eliminating many things that were excellent, such as the tacos, BLTA sandwich, salads and the bratz. This would be good if the improvements were an improvement, but the quality of the food has fallen dramatically. An Italian sausage that is awful, a buffalo salad that has way to much sauce and not much else. When I was asked to fill out an online survey after my most recent visit, I spent a few minutes and was even asked if they could contact me as a followup. I did but...crickets. If you want a beer, fine, but forget the food. Too bad, it was a great place, but is now in serious decline. I will not be returning and neither will numerous friends who share my opinion. read more

We had a larger party for COVID times. Seating is first come first serve. The tables were spaced pretty far apart and the seating area is pretty wide. I highly suggest grabbing seats and telling someone to order for the table if you go while the farmers market takes place. Even so, there isn't much of a wait. The menu is contactless. So you can look at it while you are waiting or on your way. I shared a Hop Stop burger and a basket of tots with my man. It was pretty good. The selection of beers was ok but I was more impressed with the selection of cans and bottles. Had the Passion Fruit and Guava Hard Seltzer and a Midnight Painkiller. Both were so good. We spent quite a long time there and had a great time. Kids and dog are more than welcome so bring the whole family. read more

i want to love this place as it has a great atmosphere, menu, and beer selection. This place is something that Poway needs. However, for the second time visit in a row they got our order wrong. Not a big deal, but when you point it out to the server then need wait for 10 minutes without any rectification, that is not good service. My wife had to get up herself and go to the kitchen to get her order fixed. By that time, my meal was cold. If an order was wrong, fix it quickly. it isn't that hard. We love this place and want them to do well, this is just some criticism to allow them to be even better. read more

NOT a family establishment or good for kids. It's a glorified bar. Had to leave after teen daughter had inappropriate comments made to her by a group of older men, mind you in the middle of the afternoon. Staff did nothing about it, believe one was even an owner. Other customers stood up for us before owner did. Allowing the men to stay. Our family of 6 out celebrating a huge milestone special event took our business across the street to the Hamburger Factory, Hop Stop still charged us for our drinks though that we didn't even get to enjoy. Classy. **editing my review since the business owner is defending this behavior. It's NEVER okay for grown MEN to single out a teenage girl walking to the bathroom alone. They have no right or reason to say anything to her. She is a customer too and she should feel comfortable in your business. So happy to have this as part of our neighborhood!! We spent the afternoon here with our two kiddos, who loved having the grassy area to run around without bothering anyone . They have an impressive selection of local beers on draft and some nice wines too (we tried to rose and the prosecco). Our family doubled down on french fries and tater tots, a lovely afternoon snack. This place has great/extensive outdoor seating an a very inviting atmosphere. This is my favorite date spot for me and my husband and my family's favorite hang out place. I like this restaurant because it is walking distance from my house. We don't have to worry who's gonna be the designated driver. Everyone can drink beer and we can all just walk home! The food tastes so good and very affordable! I will never get tired of their dirty fries! I'm craving it as I am writing this review. Above all, their customer service is superb. Were not really big beer drinkers, but when we ask the people working there about recommendations, they are always happy to help. They really know their beers! This is a family friendly place! So, my wife and I have been here twice now. Nice beer selection and a pleasant location. Beers are pricey though - Karl Strauss pricey with less ambience. The food is good, but the kitchen can't seem to deliver your food at or near the same time. It was just the two of us, and today I was done with my meal by the time my wife got hers, and no mention was made of the late delivery. The same thing happened the first time we were there. The customer service is very poor. We came on a busy night due to the holiday festival and understood that it would be busy. They have you pay and we tipped ahead of time. We then waited an hour for our food as others who came after us got their food. We got our food one at a time except the the two hamburgers we ordered never came. When we spoke to the manager the gentleman was very rude and did not care at all. The food we did get was good and we early would have been fine but his lack of caring for the poor service made the entire experience poor. He did not do anything about the burgers but rather said we already paid so they couldn't reimburse us. Disappointing because it's a nice ambience and the food we did get was good. read more
