I came here last weekend on Saturday, 08 August after spending a few hours at the Del Mar dog beach taking photos of dogs surfing lessons. I arrived at the restaurant at almost 1pm. If is located next to an AMC theater, so there is plenty of parking in the event the restaurant gets busy. There were already some customers seated and eating, but it wasn't particularly busy. The host let me pick my own table. The restaurant was clean and seemed spacious. My server was professional and friendly. I was tempted to order the familiar sushi items, but I told myself to try something new. I ordered the Chargers Roll, Rainbow Roll and Crunchy Shrimp Roll. These were very good. Since we moved to Ramona, we've been driving to Poway a lot and seeing so many spots we want to try. This is one that kept popping up for us, and finally, we got to stop in. The staff are very friendly and greet you immediately, except for the sushi chef, who is very stern and does not engage. We came at opening, and the place was empty, for a Saturday, I found that strange. We were told to choose any seat we wanted. Service was quick and very attentive. The menu has a little of everything, but it definitely caters more to the American palate than the Japanese. We ordered Spicy Cucumbers and Shishito Peppers as starters. Both were good. They actually tasted really good when you ate them together. For our mains, we ordered Unagi sashimi style, the honey roll, and the Roka roll. To be brutally honest, I rate sushi restaurants based on their Unagi. For me, it has to be cut very traditionally and served the same. This Unagi did not meet my standards, and yet, it was very tasty and fresh. It was a good surprise. The Honey Roll was very fresh and tasty, except for the lemon on top. The pith was not removed, and it gave it a bitter aftertaste. When we removed the lemon, it was very good. I did not like the Roka Roll, but my daughter really enjoyed it. It was missing something, in my opinion. The portions are generous, so you can fill up with just a few selections. This was just not to my palate. We asked for hot tea, and they brought us a coffee mug with a tea bag and hot water. As I said, more American than Japanese in style. The worst part for me was the ladies' room. I doubt they can do much about this, but there is such a strong sewer smell in there that it is overpowering and really hard to use the bathroom. read more

I come here at least once a week for happy hour Monday - Wednesday. This is my go to for sushi and amazing deals. I enjoy getting sushi, alcohol, and miscellaneous appetizers here. Out of everything, my favorite is the ability for this place to stay consistent and that all food is tasty and flavorful while having a huge menu. I really enjoy the spicy mayo here. The servers are always so nice and paying is through their toast little handheld device. Parking spots are plentiful, but a little small in size. This place is god for big parties and I love coming here when there is a game because the multiple tvs are typically basketball/baseball/football. I highly recommend coming here! read more

This is the closest sushi restaurant to our house, but also the priciest. However the quality is superb! I love their ahi oysters. And their pork belly bao buns are bomb! We do like coming here for happy hour, which is all day Monday-Wednesday and 4-6 on Thursday. At least it will save you a few bucks . Their Rolex roll is excellent if you are looking for protein roll. We also ordered a variety of other rolls as well (ceviche roll, ahi roll, spicy cajon roll). This is our go to sushi spot since they took over from the last one. Sashimi is always fresh and buttery delicious. Service is always outstanding. Recently we tried one of the rolls off of the Christmas specials. I forget the name of the roll but it was spicy tuna inside wrapped in soy paper topped with bluefin and very thin slices of lemon and truffle oil. Who knew that spicy tuna and truffle would be such a magical flavor combo? So good balanced with the hint of sour from the lemon. Bluefin was good but could such a premium ingredient is lost in such a decadent flavor profile, something like ahi would probably work just as well as the fish is needed but isn't the star. read more

Disappointing. After Andy sold this place it went down the hill. I wasn't actually going to leave a review but after, for the first time ever, my seven-year-old daughter said that her usually favorite Philly roll didn't taste good after taking half a bite, I went for it, so here it is. My son also said "it's okay" to his roll so this place is okay generally. But to add the cost of the food, it should taste better or at least look better. Most rolls are glorified California rolls. Would be average but the price makes it low value so we'll pick other place next time. Maybe try it again one day later but they need to step up with everything, service quality and client attention, food quality and taste as well as value and price competitiveness. read more

The sushi rolls were standard, but some of the appetizers we ordered were not good at all. The standout would be the tuna crispy rice. I've never been so tempted to send a dish back. The rice was overly fried, for a hard crunchy texture that could easily chip your teeth. The fish to rice ratio was also off. The balls of rice were also too big to eat in one bite, which wouldn't be a problem but because it was so fried and hard, we had a hard time splitting it and everything just fell apart. I've been coming to Sushi Roku since I was younger, and it used to be one of my favorite spots, especially for the bento box. Recently, my mom and I decided to visit again after years, hoping to relive those good memories. Unfortunately, this visit was very disappointing due to the service we received from our server, Alyssa. From the moment we started ordering, Alyssa came across as cold and dismissive. When my mom ordered the ceviche, the dish that arrived was completely different from what we expected. It looked more like a whole fish rather than the chopped, marinated style we're used to. My mom didn't even touch it, and we kindly asked if we could return it. Instead of handling the situation with professionalism or understanding, Alyssa responded with a sarcastic, "Well, what were you expecting?" which we felt was completely uncalled for. Additionally, I had ordered spicy yellowtail, which I confirmed with her could be made spicy. When it arrived, it was plain yellowtail with a side of sriracha. That's not what I ordered, and again, the issue was brushed off. Throughout the entire meal, Alyssa's attitude remained consistently rude and unprofessional. There was no warmth, no sense of hospitality, and it honestly felt like we were being treated as an inconvenience rather than valued customers. What made it more frustrating is that my mom has actually been to this location several times this week and is familiar with the usual level of service. This time, however, was enough to make us both decide we probably won't be coming back, especially not if Alyssa is our server again. Despite the poor service, my mom still left a 22% tip because we understand the importance of tipping in this industry. That said, good service should come first, and this experience was a huge letdown. If you visit, just be mindful of who your server is -- because our experience with Alyssa was extremely disappointing and not what we've come to expect from Sushi Roku. read more

The only delicious item was the sashimi. The drop it like it's hot sushi roll was okay, was not spicy at all. The seared blue fin tuna was good but large pieces made the last bites taste very fishy and not an enjoyable end flavor. The Tonkatsu Ramen was mediocre, lacked flavor, the meat was very fatty and not good at all. The spicy garlic edamame lacked flavor overall, not spicy, did not get the garlic flavor at all and it was oily. The staff waitress we got was new and still learning which me and my wife appreciate new employees willing to learn and improve, but her coworkers lacked the willingness to assist the new employee and provide guidance. Food was great, the service was not the best though considering they were slow, the ambiance was ok, not too fancy, but could use a bit more ambiance since the prices aren't cheap and they have a lot of premium sushi items. If the glasses are small and packed with ice then please check on me and bring me a green tea refill please and ask how everything is. Thing that got me was that I ordered a toro handroll from the menu where it clearly stated $10 and then when I get my emailed receipt I see I was charged $25. This really irks me that I'm over charged $15 and this was the only item that was not good at all. Roll had no flavor and just giant jalapeños on top making the roll spicy and just not enjoyable. All the sushi items were great. The belly items were amazing and the amberjack was superb. But the big kicker which is why I won't be coming back...Really not into places where you get the bill and it's on a digital kiosk handheld pad, then there's no breakdown and you have the server starring you down waiting on you to pay and then there's just 20% 25% and more tip options and not 15%. Im sorry but a good service should be 15% and then exceptional 20%, you cannot start the tipping at 20%. This is just wrong and it makes the consumer feel uncomfortable and it's just plain rude. You don't see what you ordered (no itemization) you just see a bill and crazy tip options and meanwhile the server just standing in front of you looking at you to hurry up and pay. Call me old school but I want to be able to see what I'm paying for and then calculate the correct tip based on the service provided. If I'm having a $200 sushi dinner where Im ordering nothing but premium belly cut sushi items then I expect the service to be extraordinary where I'm checked on frequently and not sat here waiting a very long time to ask for napkins and a green tea refill. Now if I saw the break down of the bill I could have pointed out that I was overcharged and shown the server the $10 toro handroll I ordered from the menu and how they might have possibly gave me the wrong item (toro roll). If I'm not getting refills on my green tea and eating without napkins then why am I being pressed to tip 20%-25%. If anything the sushi chefs should be getting the majority of the tip. read more

While waiting I heard two employees that were not involved with our table talking about our tab like it is gossip. Not only do they have lunch specials until 2:30, but they have Happy Hour all day Monday to Wednesday! What a steal on prices. We got the salmon teriyaki bento box that came with miso soup, rice, 4 piece CA roll, ginger salad, and mixed tempura. The mixed tempera was the same size as my entree mixed tempura! Had I known that, I wouldn't have ordered the entree. Also got two rolls, the crunchy shrimp roll and chili mango roll. I prefer my crunchy roll to have more tempura flakes. I'm a sucker for rolls with mango. The chili ponzu gave a tiny kick and the mango was sliced really thin giving you a slight sweet and tart refreshing taste. I've had better Takoyaki where there's more octopus. This one had a lot of the doughy wheat flour and one full chunk of octopus. I like mine chopped up in many pieces to have it evenly distributed in every bite. Otherwise, each bite consist of all dough and one bite with the octopus like in this case. All in all, it got crazy busy during lunch. Great quality food, quick service, loved the options. Nice size dining and bar seating. They even had little chopstick trainers and water in plastic cups ready for the kids. BIG bonus points on service right off the bat! The saki was excellent and we will likely order the same bottle next time we return. The beer was nice and cold and the glasses were frosted. Our food came out shortly afterward.
