The servers seemed a bit confused about whose tables they were managing, but in the end, we connected with someone and started our order with a few drinks. We were seated next to a cute little pond with a view of the river and the Main Street in Clayton. We would recommend ordering the chicken tenders - hand made and beer battered. What a fun place for an outdoor lunch! We stopped in to grab a bite before we took a boat tour. Yep, we were on vacay. Food was great! We shared poutine (la bloc! Yum!!) then Hubble had a burger and I had the fish sandwich. Both were great. Our server was very sociable but a bit slow. Multitasking with multiple tables seemed tough for her. I'm sure if we were just day drinking I wouldn't have cared as much, but we were on a deadline and it shouldn't take 15 mins to run and return a credit card. We were a party of 6 who came in late on Sunday evening. The inside of the Victorian house is amazing and that was just the start. The woman who waited on us was very efficient and answered any questions we had. The menu made it difficult to choose due to the variety. From the cold beer, to the mussels, to the lobster bisque, everyone had a great meal. We were welcomed to visit the upstairs dining room to see all they offer. While the food was good and they have a nice variety of beers the service was lacking, like really lacking. I think it was simply a matter of being understaffed, but we found the wait for a server to come to our table, the wait for our appetizer, wait for our meal, and wait for our check was a bit much. It's a quaint restaurant in a old house, well laid out for the space. They had 9 tables and bar seating area as well. We had their poutine as an appetizer which was tasty. Came here and had the absolute worst service. The waiters were extremely rude and could not properly add items to each check. The lobster "roll" was very overpriced for not having any flavor and it came out on a burger bun. Toward the end of our visit we all went to pay when one of the rude waitresses forcefully shoved our African American and Hispanic friends. They were rude to us the entire visit and the fact that she shoved our guests showed this business' true colors. We are very tired of facing so many racist businesses in upstate NY. 2nd time coming here and still not super impressed. Upon arriving at the host stand there was no one around but the place was pretty empty, 1 or 2 other tables in the dining area. The host walked bu the stand and went to the bar for a couple minutes. Didn't acknowledge us and didn't appear to be doing something important so the meal started off poorly. Then we ordered our drinks, the drinks took an awkward long time to get to us for a pretty empty restaurant. We ordered the pretzels and fried pickles. The pretzels were not impressive for the cost, first there was only 2 and the cheese sauce was lumpy. The pickles were good but l the sauce that came with them was very runny and hard to keep on the pickles. The beer list here though is decent and they even had some local things in rotation. On both visits the list did not disappoint and I was even able to get a tasty gose both times. Overall, I would come back but probably just for drinks. For ~ $15- that was less than 1TBS of grocery store blue cheese crumble, and I kid you not ONE slice of scallion and a few partial bits. That's a shame b/c I think a $15 plate of fries should be the best you've ever had; perhaps this is a one-off, but if I can make it better at home, it's hard to order it again. Enjoyed a very nice lunch here on the patio. Food was delicious - I had the Fried Green Tomato BLT and my husband had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. We shared a side salad and an upgraded "Classic Poutine" french fries. The BLT was the winner - crisp bacon, fried green tomatoes with a cornmeal crust, and freavocado. The bread was nicely toasted. A little confusing because the Johnston House used to be a restaurant (and the sign is still there) but they have a huge sprawling set-up outside and some seating under a roofed area. My friend and I did two appetizers: the pierogies (my GF self snuck a taste and so good. I did eat all the leftover bacon jam which was delicious) and the buffalo chicken lettuce wraps from the GF menu. We both agreed the buffalo chicken lettuce wraps were the winner. I had my heart set on the lobster roll (with a GF bun!) but they've stopped buying lobster due to costs. I did the grilled chicken sandwich with a side of poutine which was tasty, but the buff chick lettuce wraps were still the winner of the meal! They do have a gluten-free and vegan menu. I ordered the friend green tomatoes BLT, except there was no bacon??? The waiter didn't seem to care whatsoever so they had to bring me a side of bacon. We came here on Saturday for dinner around 7:30pm. The place is located in a wonderful historical building with seating in different smaller rooms. This brought up some memories about the Pink House in Savannah. They offer great outdoor seating too but it was too cold for sitting outside. The place was not busy at all and we were seated right away. As we found out later it was more or less the last day they were operating for the season. This explains somehow the "curious" dinner experience - some stuff was sold out, limited offering and the feeling staff is working on closing down. Server was friendly and attentive but still you had the feeling she was already on the move (what is understandable). We started with the Classic Poutine which was good but almost cold. I had the "It's Not Meat" burger as a main. Taste wise I liked it but also this dish was not really hot. So probably they already shut down most of the kitchen. For dessert they only had brownies which we could have as a Sundae ... and that was really good. So overall nothing totally bad but not a lot rememberable besides the beautiful building and the Sundae. read more

Super excited about this restaurant!!! Not sure why so many one star reviews?! Visited it today. The main reason for going was that I noticed they had a vegan menu option. Upon entering, we were swiftly seated in their lovely outdoor space. Our waitress was super nice and patient as we were debating about what to order. I had the vegan poutine burger. It had a Beyond Meat patty, melted vegan provolone, yummy poutine gravy, and fries inside and overflow outside of it, as pictured below. Super delicious!! Stopped for an early dinner July 27, 2022. The first thing we were greeted with was a sign saying 2.5% charged for payment other than cash. I cannot and do not understand this mentality. Translated that sign says "we are going to squeeze as much out of everything as we can." I have seen a few establishments do this and they are mediocre at best. It's insulting because you know that 90% of the restaurants business is on a card. If you're going to sell something for $10 why not just sell it for $10.25. No harm no foul no insult. I asked for a burger medium rare it was way overcooked. The french fries were a crime. There's a suggestion in the culinary world how to do the best fries, which is you double fry them. The second fry should take place a few minutes after the first fry. They shouldn't be fried at noon and refried at dinner. They become saturated with oil like this picture shows. I asked for a side of gravy which was very good. My other party ordered the fried haddock. It had to be sent back because it was raw. When it came out the second time upon tasting, it's obvious that it was previously frozen. If you're going to charge 5 to 6 times your actual food cost then the meal should be pretty spectacular. I will say the beer list is the best in the North country. read more

Stopped here tonight for dinner and to check out this new place in downtown Clayton. When we were in town last this spot was inhabited by a different restaurant that was a bit too "pinky up" for its location. This type of restaurant fits the area better and it's such a great space. Service was super fast and friendly. It was actually our one year anniversary today and we called ahead to make a reservation just in case. When we got there around 6pm the patio was empty, but within 30 minutes all the tables were full and there was actually a line forming. Usually a newer place you would see stumble a bit with that pressure but they turned tables quick and no one waited all that long. I was very surprised with how many craft beers they had on tap (around 20) and it was a decent variety with flights available as well. Seems that it's updated frequently as they had a list of upcoming beers and they actually changed the list during service and updated the menus at the tables. They do need to pick up a few more menus though as they had to play musical menu a bit as it seems they didn't have enough for each table to have their own. Alright a little known fact about me...I LOVE French fries. Like, people crave chocolate and other weird stuff, not this guy...I'm a sucker for Fries. Give me ALL the fries. When I saw that the restaurants labels itself as a poutinerie I was sold and we needed to go. We had the Fox Fries and they were good, but idk I was kinda hoping for a bit more wow? They have a bunch of options which all looked very good. Main part of our dinner I had the Nashville Chicken sandwich which tasted good but the chicken was a tad on the dry side. It came with a choice of side and my salad I chose was good and the house dressing was tasty. Overall the food was good but needed just a bit more character to be special. All in all I think this is a good addition to Clayton and I'm happy that it is here. One of our favorite restaurants in Clayton NY. Great atmosphere indoors or outside. I usually get the same meal every time. I have never been disappointed eating there. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful. In Fact, we were caught out in a very heavy rain on a Cold evening and our 5 year old granddaughter was cold and wet. Found this spot and enjoyed eating lunch here before our Clayton island boat tour. I tried a strawberry rhubarb margarita x2 because it was so good :-) Excellent selection of beer, my sister, brother in law and husband all enjoyed their picks. We ordered the pirogies as appetizers and they hit the spot! Not a morsel of the bacon jam was left. I ordered the tikka poutine and it was creative and tasty. Rest of the family got burgers and fries which did not disappoint. We had a hard working server take care of us from seating us to Taking our orders to helping us with the checks so we could make it to the boat ride on time. You could tell he had lots of experience and was good at what he did. The restaurant offers inside and outside seating. We ate inside (it's a historical building so it's fun to look at the neat architecture and old photos).
