We were looking for a place for lunch and found the The Horseshoe cafe. This place has been around since 1936 and that isn't at all surprising. It's one of those places located on "Main Street" in a small town that caters to locals. I found that is was the perfect place for lunch. It has atmosphere in spades and makes you know that you are out-west, in the authentic meaning of the word. The service was friendly and competent. I particularly enjoyed my hamburger. It was grilled as requested and had a great beefy taste. The fries were plentiful and tasty. My wife's chicken tenders were kind of average, but she enjoyed them, as well as the fries. Mixed experiences here. If I had to rate this business based on my first experience, I would rate it much higher. However, I've been back twice and the service and seating was horrible. The ambiance depends on where you sit. If you're seating to the left of the register when you walk in, you'll be seated in or near the bar. You'll also likely be forgotten about. My advice: refuse to sit there. Long wait to be seated? They aren't the only place in town. I found this place driving by, and the service is fast the menu is short, but something for breakfast is easy to spot on the menu. They keep it very cold in the restaurant I must say. If you go early in the morning take a jacket or sweater because you will need it. My friend was hungry so we stopped here on our way back to Sierra Vista. I had never been here because I thought it was only a breakfast and lunch spot. I was surprised to see it open at 5:30pm on a Sunday. The place was busy as the Super Bowl was on all the TVs. The Eagles were clobbering the KC Chiefs 7-0. The loud tvs made it very loud. The noise was the only nwgative thing. Our server, Maggie, explained to us that the restaurant has a new owner (for about two years now) and he expanded the hours through dinner. This was a nice move as there isnt much else open in town on a Sunday night. I had a Honey Mustard chicken sandwich with fries and my friend had the Philly Steak and cheese. We both loved our sandwiches. The sauce with the spinach was perfect. The brioche bun the right style bread. We only had water as we had had beer earlier in Tucson. I will be back! DH and I were hitting the road and heading home and thought to stop in to fuel up on some food before a long drive. We were asked to wait and may have been forgotten but for a large party that came in after us. I had a chopped steak and eggs and DH had the housemade corned beef hash. The coffee was strong enough to grow hair on a baby's chest so it would certainly get you through any morning challenge. The over medium eggs were perfect. And although the grill marks were beautiful, the chopped steak was overcooked with strong char. Our server was a delight and never seemed to tire of refilling DH's coffee. The food was great. The ambiance was about what I expected. The service.... well the service could use a little help. We first were ignored when we walked in. If you are busy, I understand, but at least acknowledge our existence. I had to steal place settings from another table. I nearly died of thirst before I could flag down the waitress for a refill and lastly, after waiting forever, I has to ask some random employee for a check. I don't know what is going on with them but they are going downhill fast. Last two time we ate there the service was terrible. We liked this restaurant at first - we didn't go much because it was very pricey. The last time we went there, as we were eating our meal, a HUGE cockroach fell from the ceiling and landed on my mom. It was absolutely disgusting and we will NEVER go back. I was so disgusted I could not keep eating, because if the restaurant is this unsanitary I worry about eating the food. The waitress apologized and gave us a discount on our meal, but this is the kind of thing that is just too disgusting to give a second chance. We love to support local and this place hit the spot after a long day of adventuring and a whole lot of driving. If coming on a weekend be prepared to wait for sure. We luckily found one of the last parking spaces and upon entering we're greeted right away. The inside hostess station is very small so you may have to wait outside until your table is ready. Our wait time was about twenty minutes. Our server was wonderful. She had a smile on her face the entire time and gave some great options when asked. The place is pretty small, but had decent seating along with a bar area to dine. I loved the old school feel. The menu isn't huge but boy does it have some amazing options. I went for the Bobcat Burger. Amazing! Even came with a horshoe burned into the bum, cool touch. Fries yummy. My daughter ordered chili cheese fries she loved. She was so full. My husband had a patty melt while my son chose to eat a side of fries as he's picky and couldn't find anything he'd like. Hereally enjoyed them. The only negative that really bothered my husband was he ordered an ice tea and was given a refill. When our bill came he was charged $8 for two ice teas. That's crazy. Our bad if there was a no refill policy but we did not see that. Benson, AZ Not many places to choose from in the small town. This place came with great reviews so I had to try it. Multiple sandwiches and other menu items to choose from. I chose the honey mustard chicken sandwich. The menu never discloses if it comes with anything. So I ordered a side of onion rings. Upon later clarification, the waitress said you can get a side with your sandwich and onion rings were a two dollar up charge. Not a problem. But I wish it was mentioned on the menu. Black vinyl boost line the wall with a few tables in the front window. You can also sit at the counter with low individual counter chairs. The tables are long and wooden. Easily six people could sit in one booth. The restaurant gives off diner vibes, which I like. I ordered an iced tea to drink, and it is freshly brewed to perfection. The chicken sandwich had a very long, thin chicken breast and the entire meat was covered in cheese. They toast the brioche bun and sear the top with a horseshoe imprint. Very impressive. The meal is also served with a slice of dill pickle. The onion rings were hot and crispy. They are not thin, nor are they thick. The chicken had good flavor. We planned on lunch at The Horseshoe following our visit to Kartchner Caverns. It was exactly what we hoped for: delicious food, nicely presented, and served by an attentive and engaging server. I had the Reuben and it was delicious. My two friends enjoyed their Chicken Bacon Ranch wraps. The fruit salad that one requested for her side was beautiful. Really, we should have taken a photo. The French fries were perfectly seasoned. We were in and out in an hour without ever feeling rushed.
