This roadside dinner is on the east side of Benson. It is an old building with a musty smell as you walk in, yet it is a popular place for the locals. The menu is extensive but I just wanted something light to hold me over until dinner so I had three ground beef tacos, the special of the day. The tacos were indeed light with just a little beef, lettuce and cheese. The bottled sauce added a nice spice. Service was very friendly. The interior decor looked like it came straight out of Sonora with colorful rural art on the walls. I would come back for a heartier meal as the service and the customers were welcoming. read more

Wanted to go for a drive and ended up here for lunch. It was not much to look at, which should have been a sign. I ordered a cheese quesadilla and the tamales. The quesadilla was actually pretty decent. The tamales were ok. They were bland with little flavor. The chips and salsa were sad. The chips were stale and the salsa was a poor purchased hot sauce. I would expected more being in Arizona. This is what I would expect in the northern states where Mexican food is not as abundant. The service was ok. Stopped in for lunch on a road trip. Quaint diner, definitely family run. Exactly what you expect from a small town diner with locals who who frequent as you can tell by the greetings as them come and go. The service was timely and kind. The chorizo and eggs were cooked perfect and with a fair spice. The beans were refried chunky style and flavored well. The french fries were cooked to a crisp golden. I ordered the Shredded Beef Chimichanga and chips and salsa. It was delicious. My son had the all you can eat fish fry, it was Friday. He said it was good, it came with fries and coleslaw which he said was the tastiest he had had in a long time. Who knew he was a coleslaw snob We walked out quite full. Traveling from Las Cruces to San Diego, we found this place on Yelp at lunch time. It's located on the I-10 Business Rd, just a little ways off the interstate. I read the reviews and found out they have Mexican and American food. I was all ready for Mexican and we were looking over the large variety of menu items when our server pointed out the specials on the board. We chose the beef tacos that were just $1.65 each! Both of us got 3 each. They were hard shelled tacos with lettuce, tomato and cheese. They also came with chips and salsa. The salsa was different but still good. It had a little kick but not too much. It came in a bottle but she also brought a salsa bowl. The came out quickly. They were crunchy and the cheese tasted like it was freshly grated. The decor was cute. The restrooms were clean. The iced tea tasted like it was brewed, not dispenser tea. It was great. They close the restaurant for the entire month of July so don't stop during that time. Great little restaurant if you're in the area. Our server was awesome too. read more

We had lunch at the 86 Cafe on Tuesday, May , 3rd. It was the 2nd time we've eaten here. I will say the name is a little strange for a restaurant, as to '86' food is to cut it from the menu. This time we ordered take out. The person answering the phone was very pleasant and took the order. We ordered the Mexican pizza. It is not the same you get from a fast food style place. The fresh ingredients were very ample. There was a good amount of meat on it as well as a base layer of refried beans, and lettuce, tomato and cheese for toppings. If there was a layer of salsa, I didn't taste it. Personally, I would skip the bean base layer and just use salsa. It was very tasty and filling. And, it feeds about 3-4 adults. Very reasonable price for $13.50. We also had the shredded beef burrito. This is definitely my favorite item on the menu. The burrito contains an excellent quantity of shredded beef which is nicely seasoned. It also has a lot of cheese. All of this wrapped up in a fresh flour tortilla. It's large enough for 2 to split or 1 very very hungry person to eat. The bill was around $20 and we had left overs for 2 days. Very costly effective these days. If you eat in you get a complimentary bowl of chips and salsa. Beware, the salsa is very spicy. This is a small family run restaurant on East 4th Street in Benson. You need to go under the train bridge towards the far exit towards I-10. They do have a sign on West 4th alerting people to the cafe, but the sign is very small and easily overlooked. Make sure if you come to Benson you try the food at the 86 Cafe. It's well worth it. read more

My mother and I were looking for something new for lunch, something different than the usual choices in Sierra Vista so we made the 30 minute drive to Benson and selected the Eighty-Six Cafe based on Yelp reviews. We weren't disappointed with the selection. While everything was not perfect, the salsa provided with the chips & salsa was pretty bland and the chicken in my enchiladas could have been seasoned more, overall it was a very good experience. As noted, the chicken in my enchiladas could have been seasoned more; however, the chicken was moist with decent flavor and the rice and beans were fresh and tasty. My mother indicated her taco salad was very good and she appreciated the generous amount of beef. Our waitress was very courteous and right on time with refills. My mother noticed a sign indicating an all you can fish fry on Tuesdays and Fridays and we've already decided we'll make another trip in the near future. read more

Really solid food for the area with reasonably priced lunch specials. I ordered fried zucchini ($6.25) to start. They were hot, crunchy, and tasted great, the server also brought me ranch for dipping. Although for the price there should be a few more but I would definitely order them again. I chose their single cheeseburger special ($4.99) and was quite satisfied. Tasted similar to a sonic burger, which I really like and came with fries. Lastly, I tried their peach cobbler ($4.75) and it was so good! Probably my favorite thing I had on this visit was the cobbler. I did notice there is a lot of Mexican food on their menu so I am interested to see how that compares to the more American food I had today. We had the AYCE fish. It was very overcooked and not very enjoyable. Tasted like it was old oil also. I was really looking forward to a Friday Fish Fry. The tiny salad that came with it was mediocre also. Just a little bit of lettuce and two cherry tomatoes with dressing already on it. The coleslaw was also pretty tasteless. No seasonings at all on any of the food. The fish came with about a tablespoon of tartar sauce. This is the second time I have tried thier food and I will never make that mistake again. I ordered the Carne Asada Burro enchilada style. Low quality meat. Couldn't remove the fat from the meat while they were cutting in pieces. Makes me wonder if it was even fresh meat. No flavor. Chewiest meat ever. Enchilada sauce was okay. Last time I was here I got red Chile burro and got huge chunks of fat. The didn't roll burro into a classic burro, they put it in a bowl and overlapped the ends of the tortilla and then they poured the sauce over it. It was more like a soup. I live in the area and I went to 86 Cafe specifically today, only to learn that NOTHING on the menu is vegetarian; not the chili rellenos (he said it has beef, which I don't understand) nor rice or even beans. The year is 2022 and this disappointed me so much. Mi Casa down the street has an enlightened view of how many people eat nowadays. This place -- though it looked very nice and homey inside and I'm sure others love it -- is living in the past. read more
