The Hotel Mac (built in 1911) is a historic hotel and restaurant located in Point Richmond. The main hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The hotel originally closed due to a fire in 1971, but it reopened in 1978. The hotel came under new ownership in 2013 and had a brief shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant space was leased out in 2023 and reopened as Biancoverde at Hotel Mac. [Check in]: Our party had one of the most interesting hotel check-in experiences. I originally booked through the Capital One Travel portal. Unlike other standard hotels, this hotel has no front desk. Guests planning to arrive outside of normal check-in hours are supposed to receive an email within 24 hours before arrival with check-in instructions and an access code. The hotel does not allow check-in after 12 AM and the room is ready at 3 PM. Our party arrived at the Hotel Mac at 8:45 PM only to realize that the front entrance (Washington Ave) is for the restaurant (Biancoverde) while the side entrance (Cottage Ave) is for hotel lodging. I pushed the "Ring for Manager" button but received no immediate response. After waiting for two minutes, a lady got out of her parked car on the street and said that she had been out and heard the doorbell ring. [Issues with check in]: Apparently the manager said she was unable to send me instructions by phone or email because I booked through Capital One Travel and the platform didn't show my actual email and phone number. Once I gave the manager my phone number, I received the full instructions. It was not until this moment that I realized our party was going to stay in the Hotel Mac Annex rather than the actual Hotel Mac. Our party had no trouble getting into the Hotel Mac Annex as the entire check-in process was contactless. The building's front door code, room code, location of the annex, location and entry codes for the designated parking lot, and Wi-Fi password were provided by text. [Parking]: The parking lot right next to the Hotel Mac restaurant is for restaurant customers only. The actual hotel parking lot is a gated lot just steps away (21 Washington Ave) with a gate entry code and a separate pedestrian gate code. [Price]: Approximately $185 per night for a queen bed at the Hotel Mac Annex (36 Railroad Ave). [Experience]: I was able to hear railroad sounds, so I recommend not leaving the window open. Our party could not hear much outside noise once the windows were closed and the hotel also provided disposable earplugs next to the bed. The old-school central AC controls was functional and the room was nice & cool at 70°F. The shower water pressure was good and the water was hot. It would have been nice if one of the bottles had been labeled as body wash or conditioner. Hang the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door to skip housekeeping service. The text message included a number to text for any issues. No microwave, but there was a K-Cup machine. The hair dryer and mini-fridge were in the drawers and the room also had a small TV. The text message also included a website about what to do while visiting Point Richmond ( https://www.pointrichmond.com/ ) and Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park was at the top of the list of recommended places to visit. [Check-out]: Check-out is at 11 AM. I went back to the Hotel Mac and pushed the "Ring for Manager" button for check-out. The manager popped her head out of a window above and said that I did not have to do anything for check-out and can just simply leave. [Conclusion]: The one word to describe this hotel is charming. This hotel pays attention to small details from the towels, toilet paper (yes you heard that correctly), mirrors, vase, bookshelf, bathrobes, etc. There was a slight noise issue from the railroad, but once the window was closed it became a non-issue. A nice cozy historical spot to meetup with friends for dinner and drinks, or a romantic night out. I enjoy coming to this side of Pt. Richmond, so rich in history. You're almost transported to an old spot in Virginia City, but it's in the Bay Area. The entrees are savory, the drinks are strong, and staff are attentive. Very welcoming restaurant, except when it's super quiet right after the holidays, live music may not happen. One day, I want to stay here and have breakfast in bed or simply walk downstairs. I love this historic place in Pt. Richmond. I've stayed here multiple times and I've always been very pleased with their charming rooms. I will go as far as to say I won't stay anywhere else in all of Richmond. This place is so close to all the cute shops and yummy restaurants that Pt Richmond has to offer and the price is very reasonable. It's actually two separate buildings. One is the historic hotel plus restaurant, and there's a smaller annex just a few steps away on another street. I've always stayed in the annex, but someday I'll book the main hotel. To celebrate my recent Birthday, Gayle and I decided to come down the Bay Area for another great Berkeley Rep Play (The Far Country), followed by dinner at Biancoverde, and then upstairs for an overnight stay at the Hotel Mac. CONS - None! +/- - The room doesn't include breakfast, but there was plenty of options within Point Richmond the next morning. - Communication with the Hotel had its quiet moments, but things worked out well in the end. PROS 1. Point Richmond is a cool, pretty, and safe little oasis in the distant shadow of I-580 and Chevron. This is a great area for walks around town, visiting the Richmond Plunge, or going for longer hill and shore hikes. 2. Free secure parking available for Hotel guests across the street. 3. Gorgeous historical building including the restaurant and the upstairs rooms. 4. Our room (HMS Wanderer) was comfortable, nicely appointed, and very enjoyable. If for some unforeseen reason, I needed to stay overnight in Richmond, this would be the hotel I'd try to reserve since Point Richmond is such a charming hamlet relative to the rest of the city. My first visit here was over Thanksgiving week when the lobby was barely decked out with boughs of holly. The lobster ravioli? Muah, chef's kiss. Rich, tender, and that subtle lemony taste, Perfect. As for the calamari, it was easily the best I've had in the Bay crisped just right, well seasoned. I remember the head chef used to work at Italy on Gilman, and I was honestly upset when I found out they were closing. But then I found out he moved over to Hotel Mac. I have been coming here for decades. Lovely memories with my parents and friends. Lots of time spent in the cellar room. Stopped by on our way home from Petaluma on a Monday evening. Under new management and new Italian menu. Bar looks the same and drinks looked well put together and male bartender seemed Very inviting and friendly. There is also a very diverse cocktail menu. I ordered minestrone soup which arrived piping hot but lacking flavor. I then moved on to the appetizer portion of steamed clams for my entree. It was a toss up clams or mussels. Our waiter said the mussels were spicy. I told him I don't and can't do spice at all, absolutely no spice or heat. He said the clams were not spicy at all. They arrived, all were all open which was nice. I always hate losing several due to them not opening up. One bite and although they were not extremely spicy there was notable heat to them. Not something I can tolerate so back they went. They had been served with two pieces of toasted bread that were old and not edible. I was very disappointed in my Meal My dining partner ordered the risotto which she said was excellent. We also ordered the melon appetizer which was very good. Service was just OK. The woman who seated us was not Personable what so ever. As we passed the wine cellar room I asked if they still had it for dining she abruptly said "yes, we are not seating there" and continued to walk in front of us. We had reservations and were placed in a small table against the wall. We asked to be moved and she abruptly said no and Walked away. I have mobility issues so being moved would have made my experience a bit More comfortable. I did not Feel like chasing her down so I just dealt with it which is unusual for me but I was tired and just Wanted a familiar, mellow, good food dining experience. I don't know if she is done with people Reminiscing about coming there before new management which I am sure happens daily, but if you want those of us that grew up there to continue to come back I would Think you would honor Those memories and encourage us to make new ones. I shared countless dinners/celebrations in the cellar with my parents who are no longer on this earth. It would have been nice for her to acknowledge my Comment other then you Can't sit there. 11 16 2025 I was there Sunday with 7 other people for mid-day lunch and the food was abismal. I ordered one of the specials which was roast pork medallions, asparagus and mashed potatoes. Three of the loin of pork medallions were dry and burnt all around the edge and a very nice dark grey color. Only one was almost edible because it was missing the burnt edge. It's as if you overcooked the loin of pork the night before and heated it up in a pan the next day and then served it as "fresh" The mashed potatoes had the taste and consistency of instant potatoes, (the kind you got in elementary school) but worse, if that is even possible. The asparagus was cooked well with a bright green color and slight snap when biting into it. They should be ashamed to serve that to anyone and then charge 38.00 dollars. I left 3/4 of the meal on the plate and not a word from the server. Oh, by the way, I had a Cosmopolitan cocktail that was sour and grey (the color dé jour) rather than a happy pink color. I really hate writing a bad review and I am very forgiving if restaurants make mistakes, however, I am perplexed that the "chef" could actually think that this was ok to serve this to anyone. Came here for to have dinner for my wife's birthday. In the reservation, we asked to be seated in a booth AND that it was her birthday. The hopes that they do a semblance of something to acknowledge it. Well, I will say the inside ambience was nice. It's got mid-century charm and live jazz. Then it goes downhill from there. They DID NOT seat us in a booth, granted they did let us choose what table we could sit at. Whatever, we thought we could look past it. Took forever for our waiter to come to us and my wife ordered a margarita that had cheap tequila and Jamba juice syrup. Uh, for having such a nice bar, this drink severely disappointed with the quality. Also it was freaking expensive! Alright well, we got the burrata, not bad, they baked it to hell it. So now it was thick and chewy inside, thereby turning into a mozzarella stick. I thought burrata was thin and creamy? We shared a beat salad that they drowned in dressing. And then our entrees, which were overpriced by the way. I had the cioppino, which actually wasn't that bad. I had to ask for a claw-breaker tool. Don't know if they forgot, but I'm not about to break open crab legs with my fingers. My wife ordered the Chicken Piccata. Man was that a letdown! It literally looked like the piccata you get at trader joes! And the trader Joe's one tasted better! Then the veggies, straight out of a school cafeteria. And a scoop of thick mash potatoes......with no gravy. Presentation was straight garbage. I feel bad because my wife let out a literal groan of disappointment from the presentation. Did I forget to mention our server NEVER checked on us?! But boy, they sure got staff to check your water level. Ridiculous. Also, they didn't acknowledge my wife's birthday. I have been eating here for many years... but rumor has it that the restaurant was up for sale not too long ago. It has been about eight months since my last visit, but my guest and I ate there just last week. One glass of red wine - I did not drink. (a moderately priced cabernet.) One iced tea, *one split small salad*, one bowl of soup, a *split* pasta dish with added medium sized prawns with a light sauce white wine sauce, two bottles of Pellegrino sparkling water, nothing else - no desert. The bill was $150.00 including the gratuity ! ! Then, to add injury to insult... an added charge for using my credit card. The food was good. Not exceptional. It's our new date night spot. We went in the evening we found parking easily but in the daytime is probably busy and harder to get parking. The experience was wonderful. The restaurant is all decked out with Christmas lights. And they had a jazz band playing downstairs near the bar. My partner ordered the veal marsala and I ordered the lasagna. The Hotel Mac has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. My parents and our friends used to go here for dinner after every Cal vs. USC football game held in Berkeley. Great tradition. We'd always request the cellar room. If you want a more intimate setting, I highly recommend shooting for the cellar room. A few years ago, while my girlfriend and I lived in Point Richmond, this was our favorite happy hour in the area, and every now and then we'd come for fancy date night. Now it's under new management. The staff is as friendly as ever! I had a great plate of potato wedges and I feel like I just ate a whole meal. But dear God this playlist is awful. They have been playing Jazz covers of popular music like this whole time. If I was at a Panera or a Burger King, it would be appropriate, but this is the Hotel F*cking Mac, yo. This place has had jazz legends roll through here. And legend aside, some SERIOUS TALENT! The worst hotel experience of my life. The parking lot is a lie, the gate code they give you does not work. The hotel rooms are not actually at the address they give, they provide the real address on your check in date. The actual address is on a sketchy street riddled with homeless people along train tracks. I arrived alone at night and outside of my room was a man in a ski mask staring at me as I tried to gather my things. Terrified, I went to the restaurant they own in tears trying to figure out what to do. A host at the restaurant got in my car and drove with me to the other building to escort me in. Totally uncomfortable, but very nice of him to help me. There is no front desk or onsite hotel staff and it does not feel safe. It is extremely loud, as trains pass by outside your window all night long. The walls are dirty, there is dust in the vents, the phone and refrigerator do not work. The hotel will charge you a $150 cleaning fee for pets even though they don't tell you about this until after the fact. They claim to be pet friendly but they wait until you're locked into the reservation to divulge the pet policy buried in the bottom of an email, not mentioned anywhere during the booking process Hilariously, my dog is a service dog who absolutely left no trace and they are illegally trying to charge a cleaning fee for him being there. and now I have to take legal action. An all around nightmare of a place that tries to profit by using the "gotcha" business model. The receptionist finds joy in being an awful human being. read more

Uncaring management- no one responds to the E-Mail as listed on their website. There is no staffed front desk so we had to deal with Desiree who sent the code for the front door and the Bellows Suite- our room 301 but via multi-media vs. a standard text so I could not open it. I paid $50 extra for an early check-in but only after much prodding and multiple phone calls did she finally give us the code. Thus, we only had time to put our luggage in the room without freshening up before leaving to catch our ferry for dinner in San Francisco. Upon returning to the room, neither of us could work the TV or the coffee maker but, at 8:30 PM, we doubted Desiree would respond. We both enjoy staying at historic properties and do not have issues with coffee makers or TVs elsewhere. The room was attractive and comfortable but there is virtually no help available, on line or over the phone. Next time I am in the East Bay I will stay where I have previously- the Berkeley City Club, the Durant or the Claremont. They have friendly staff on duty who are available to assist vs. only one not so helpful associate and an absent manager who obviously must not care about his or her guests. read more

The Hotel Mac was a lovely boutique hotel in a cute, walkable town. Checkin was easy and the room was clean. My two negative observations here are 1. Our rooms windows didn't seem water tight. The wooden blinds were warped and that wasn't the only sign of wear in the room. 2. The bigger issue was that the locks were not mounted correctly. I would strongly recommend that the Hotel Mac have a proper locksmith ensure that their locks and doors are fitted properly. I would wholeheartedly return to this place, but I would feel better with a bit more upkeep and better attention to physical security. read more

It is absolutely insane that Desiree keeps updating her reply to my review trying to emphasize a "3 vs 1" confrontation. As a young woman & recent college graduate, I brought parents along with me just in case I came across Desiree -- the older, aggressive hotel manager who harassed me over the phone. I am also happy to emphasize that we went to talk to the owner of the hotel and never requested Desiree. Staff in the restaurant (not connected to the hotel, they later apologized for Desiree's actions and were amazing people) called her down due to the owner not being present. I see that she has gone through and left nasty replies to others who have voiced similar concerns with her customer service here on Yelp. While this has been a disgusting experience, I am happy that her behavior is being brought to light. ** I would not like to receive any more notifications from this interaction. I have sent a few clients to stay at Hotel Mac because I am a travel agent and they absolutely loved it and so do I I personally try to go if not every month every few months especially when I need a break.. Staying here is always such a wonderful experience. The staff remembers us by name, this place is always well stocked and clean as a whistle! We've stayed in most of the rooms.. in both the annex and the old restored, historical original Hotel Mac (beautifully breathtaking) however, we prefer the Annex! (The best A/C, my fiancé is a hotbox lol) If you like the historical architecture look it's an absolute must to stay in the main building at least once! (A/C doesn't work AS WELL but it is so romantic and you can always crack a window!) you've gotta give and take lol There Resturant is so amazing also, I believe with Covid it's closed for the rest of the year, sadly. But when it's not closed.. the vibe is so much fun! Great music, good people, wonderful staff and the food is the greatest!! Looking forward to that reopening. Room 201 is our new fav in the annex! First of all this place is just so charming especially around the holidays. Such a very festive atmosphere in a unique and historic space. Our server Alberto is the best!! Responsive, friendly, accommodating and considerate. The food and drinks arrived promptly and he made sure we had everything we needed. Our meals were delicious and exceeded our expectations. we had the great pleasure of dining at the recently re-opened hotel Mac last night. There were four of us for a delightful birthday dinner. we began with drinks in the beautiful lobby of the restaurant while we waited for our table in the balcony to be prepared. It was charming, and we were serenaded by customers who played the grand piano. We were taken upstairs to a beautiful table which had lovely silverware and dishes upon it. We ordered a beautiful bottle of red wine and had bruschetta Caesar salad and portobello mushrooms to start. Each of them were lovely, but the mushroom was the best mushroom I've ever tasted in my life and could convince me to give up meat forever, and just eat those mushrooms! after that two of us had lovely chili, shrimp scampi, which was just delicious. One of us had a gorgeous porterhouse steak, which was scrumptious. Our waiter was charming and sweet and helpful. The food came quickly, and the service was attentive and joyful.
