Established in 1891, this bar is the oldest in Alaska. It's located off the beaten path, which keeps the crowds to a minimum during tourist season. I liked the historic atmosphere, the available games, the long bar and the tasty food during my visit. The menu included baskets of fried foods, tacos and burgers. I found the ground beef tacos with rice and beans to be delicious, with great portions and a reasonable (for Alaska) price. The interior offered two dining areas, a lengthy bar, a pool table, two dart boards, a rollup garage door, a food counter and several TVs. I found the service at the food counter to be welcoming and helpful, while the service at the bar was merely accommodating. Overall, it was a good experience at a historic bar. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Place was empty and the lady (owner we believe) bartender was extremely rude. Turned away multiple customers wanting to spend money at the establishment. We were about to order drinks and politely asked if she could turn on the volume for FIFA Brazil soccer game that was on at the bar. She then went on a rant about how she only will turn on the volume for the US men's soccer team. Came out a little racist and offensive. Guess she doesn't like Brazil. read more

Today I ordered the Quesadilla with chicken and also received a mystery sauce. I was thinking that I should have requested Pico or salsa but also thought " it's a quesadilla, of course it's going to come with one or the other. But it instead came with a brownish colored mystery sauce. The quesadilla wasn't bad but the appropriate condiments would have kicked it up notch. We popped in here after seeing the 1891 established date and the quiet laid back atmosphere. We sat at the bar and got prompt service to order some local brews. I got the Tigers Blood from 49th state brewing that was on tap. This was truly a piña colada as a beer and it was delcioous. We ordered some fries and tater tots from the food service bar, both of which were great. Relaxed nice stop to wrap up our time in Juneau. read more

There is a wall but the wall ends in about 20 feet. on the otherside of the wall you can walk up and order food and sit and eat. There is also a door you can enter from, it's right next to the Bar entrance. They have a pool table as well. They will bring your food to the Bar or wherever you are sitting. The Tacos were decent. What an amazing little bar. It is the oldest bar in Alaska and certainly has a feel like an old small town bar. The drinks were amazing and the prices were much cheaper than expected. Went in just to grab a bite to eat after working all day and wouldn't let me order any food because I didn't have my ID on me. I said I was just getting a bite to eat and no drinks and they said it's a bar. I said I know I'm just grabbing food and the server was very mean about it still, instead of just saying we can't serve you they just kept saying it's a bar. I went to this spot for my birthday. Not because I wanted to, but because we got into Juneau "late". And, like most of a Alaska, food options are almost non-existent in Juneau after 10pm. I walked in, saw the menu items and thought "alight, this is the classic 'anything we can make with a freezer and a frier' food" you find all over rural Alaska. Expectations set to: low. I am happy to report that I could not be more wrong! Despite the menu items all looking generic and plain, there is a lot of character here! I got a crunch wrap and it tasted exactly how my friends that love Taco Bell describe Taco Bell...I say describe because Taco Bell is very bland food to me, it's not even good in a 'guilty pleasure' way...it's just...plain. We really enjoyed Imperial Bar. Most tourists went to the Red Dog because it seems like the place to go since I suppose it's closest to the port perhaps? Just left. I'm not a regular bar guy, but I wanted to go out for a burger and brew. I've avoided the Imperial for years, because unless you know the staff, you get ignored. I gave them another try today. Nothing has changed. I ordered a drink, and told them I wanted to order food. I got told, "well you have to go over there, and then we need to hold your card." The food was great. The bar tender ignored me like I was a pimple you hope people won't see. About 45 minutes later, she begrudgingly brought me one more drink. She looked at me like she wished I would just leave. I came in sober, and in a good mood. I left mostly sober, and in a bad mood. She didn't know I was a local, so she didn't care. When in Juneau, you will quickly realize downtown and by the cruise port is where to go for a night out when visiting. The imperial bar is one of the very few bars that are open late, and probably the go late night hang out spot. The bar here is huge and it can get crowded some nights here. The drinks are set at good prices and they do have specials. I believe we paid $8 for a beer. At night they'll have a DJ and have a big enough space that people can dance and enjoy the music. We went to the Imperial last night for a quick and easy dinner. We had heard they had good burgers. The person taking orders was very nice and helpful. The food came out relatively fast. The burgers were fine but nothing special, not nearly as good as at the bar on Douglas in my opinion. The thing that made me the most unhappy was that I had to pay $0.75 extra to get mustard for my burger because "it has to come on the barge." Evidently ketchup and hot sauce are the only condiments provided at no charge. I know this sounds petty but it's very irritating to be up charged for an inexpensive staple condiment to make a mediocre burger taste better. read more

The female bartender needs a lesson on how to read the room and the staff needs to communicate better. My boyfriend and I stood patiently at the end of the bar this past weekend for 20mins waiting to order drinks, the bar back even asked if we needed any help and told him we did. The female bartender even at one point came down to where we were and helped a customer that was standing directly next to us and then ignored us when we tried to get her attention. I finally raised my hand to try to get her attention because she was once again standing near us and we were met with hostility and a comment of "no, don't do that, you can wait, I will get to you when I get to you" and then she walked off to the other end of the bar to help customers that had just walked up. My boyfriend and I decided to leave right away if that's the attitude and service we were going to get. I understand it was a busy weekend but there's no need to be rude to customers that have been waiting patiently and weren't even doing anything other than trying to get someone's attention. read more

An amazing bar with a great personality! I especially loved the large roll up windows at the entrance that gives it the whole open air feel. The bar and decor suggests a 'last frontier dive', but a few strategically placed tvs (playing anything from old Hana Barbera cartons to sports center) and pool tables say otherwise. The staff was really personable and kind, the beer selection is great as with any northwest bar. The only REMOTE downside was when we visited there happened to be a private party that was playing hip hop music, often the same song over and over. Unfortunately the bartenders were at the mercy of the party planner's i pod. God that was horrible. Still enjoyed my time highly and will be revisiting soon. read more

A little off from the tourist traps of the pier area is this gem! Imperial visitors are greeted by a simple sign on the outside with a note, "Alaska's Oldest Bar". Well, that's all it took for us to go inside. The interior is very cool with old photos and memorabilia from their 100+ years in business. Only a handful of locals were eating and drinking while we were there and the bartender was very welcoming. She poured our drinks quickly and checked in on us regularly without being overbearing. We also ordered some of their famous tater tots over at the food window. The tater tots did not disappoint and the Sriracha Sour Cream is a "can't miss" item here. Overall we were really impressed by this place and its "charm" factor was off the charts. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Juneau. read more
