Known for their unique "crab fart," we decided to give it a try--it was definitely interesting but pleasantly tasty. The venue itself is rich with history, which adds a lot of character to the place. While the hotel's location is excellent - right in the heart of Juneau's tourist area - unfortunately, that was the only positive aspect of our stay. The convenience of the location simply does not outweigh the poor hospitality and lack of customer care we experienced. I normally enjoy supporting small independent businesses like this one, but this stay has made me seriously rethink where I choose to spend my money going forward. Having stayed in both luxury hotels and unique properties with character, I know that basic professionalism and genuine guest care should be standard regardless of price or style. Disliked · Upon our arrival to this property we made our way to our room only to discover it was not the Family Loft with two queen beds we had specifically booked. Instead, we were given a room with one queen bed and a pull-out couch. When I returned to the front desk, I was told the booked room was occupied by a long-term tenant and unavailable. While I understand availability issues can arise, the hotel had been in direct contact with me through the booking platform's messaging system prior to our arrival and never mentioned this problem. It appeared they chose not to inform us, likely to prevent us from canceling. The pull-out couch was in poor condition, making it impossible for our adult family member to get a decent night's sleep. The queen bed was also uncomfortable, with our feet elevated in an awkward position. The window was broken and OPEN at least 2 inches. We did not expect a luxury resort, but we did expect the room type we reserved. Most concerning was the staff's response. Rather than showing empathy or offering solutions, they became defensive, blaming the booking company and stating the room had been unavailable for weeks. Since I booked December 6th, this lack of notification wasted our time and created unnecessary inconvenience. I politely requested compensation for just one night due to the inconvenience, which I believe was more than reasonable. Unfortunately, the hotel made no effort to resolve the situation or make things right despite my several follow-ups. Prospective guests should be aware: while the location may seem convenient, the poor communication, room inaccuracies, and indifferent customer service made this a frustrating experience we would not repeat. To make matters worse, the hotel was crazy loud until 3am due to the bar adjacent to the property, making rest nearly impossible. We will be visiting Juneau several times a year in the coming years with August 2026 being our next stay, sadly we cannot support this small business. read more

Run! The twin bed mattresses were awful, the carpet was probably installed in 1990 if I had to guess. Neither of us are germaphobes at all but we didn't want to put our bare feet on it. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls. There was no climate control. We were not advised that there is no elevator (normally I would not mind that but we had 3 large suitcase bc my son was moving there for the summer). The double staircase is very steep and treacherous. There is zero noise barrier. I woke up both mornings to the sound of my neighbor snoring. I was also awakened at 11:30 on a Monday night to the sound of the band from the bar below...It was loud enough that I felt I could have sang along. The desk is not monitored 24 hours a day. They bill it as an historic hotel...I've stayed in several historic hotels which have been maintained. This is just shabby and run-down. It's basically a hostel at hotel prices. read more

On one occasion, a staff member told me I was loitering -- apparently because I hadn't bought a drink every single time I came in. That alone was already a stretch, but when I calmly challenged that reasoning, they changed their explanation and told me they had "hours of footage of me making customers uncomfortable." I was shocked. No one had ever approached me with a complaint before -- no conversation, no warning, no discussion. Just surveillance claims and vague accusations with no opportunity to speak for myself. It felt like I was being watched, judged, and treated differently. It's a historic hotel that was built during the Alaska Gold Rush and it's the oldest operating hotel in Juneau. It's nestled right in the center of the downtown area. The bartender was so friendly and gave us great recommendations. We just loved the charm and vibes of this bar and we spent a while here enjoying the second floor balcony. We even played some chess they provided. They have a full bar with plenty of local spirits and beers on tap. I had a couple Gin and Tonics, both made with a different local gin. The historic Alaskan Hotel is the oldest operating hotel in Juneau & was built during the Alaska Gold Rush. It is a Victorian building which is listed on the National register of Historic Places located in the Downtown area. This place from what we heard used to be a brothels' I mean that on it's own is cause for curiosity to check out the place. The Arctic trails have their secret tales that could make you blood run cold.....Now I won't do the whole Cremation of Sam McGee thing, but I encourage you to look it up. The Alaskan Hotel & Bar reminds me of that time and harkens me back to my fathers readings from Robert W. Service and those frozen nights spent inside the Malamute Saloon. "Morgan" the raven haired beauty who poured me som suds and snuck me a shot was the absolute best ! My wife and I stopped in for some relief from the "cruise thing" and were pleasantly surprised with the authenticity and bandstand that flew the playbills of the groups that rocked the house over the years. This place was pretty bad. I'm giving it two stars for location. I chose this hotel because I wanted to be centrally located in Juneau. That's really the only thing the hotel has going for it. It's dirty. I literally had bugs in my bed ... got bites all over my body and ended up at urgent care. The bar is open all night. They don't serve food. So if you're looking for food you have to walk some place else (to a restaurant), because bars in Juneau don't serve food. I booked this place for several nights. After the first night, I ended up cancelling my location for many reasons (including those above), and I ended up switching hotels. read more

I didn't make it to the bar but I was a hotel guest here for five nights. Oof. I'm hovering with three or four stars with this one but I think in the end it's going to have to be three. First of all and the best part about this hotel is that location simply can't be beat. You are in downtown and conveniently located to all of the goods and services that it has to offer. Not only that you are close to the Port of Juneau and Mount Roberts Tramway so all that could really push it into four stars. But I just can't do four stars. Almost every night here we spent here was really disruptive. The walls are paper thin for these rooms so we got to hear singing and discussions about the zodiac signs to 3 or 4 am a couple of nights with our neighbors. Even though we were on the third floor we could hear the bar on the ground floor and that was mostly due to our room being in the front of the hotel. It wasn't so much the inside bar noise but patrons hanging around the outside entrance to the bar. On top of that after the bar long closed once or twice I heard what may have been bears knocking over trash cans to go find snacks which is a nightly ritual in downtown. Early morning you would think would improve on the noise but homeless people on the sidewalk below would get into arguments with passersby and with each other which resonated up to our room. SO much noise pollution going on here. After we checked out another guest who was more of a winter guest that the manager knew was in discussion with her and apparently the washer and dryer further in the building can be disruptive towards rest too which is further back in the hotel. I imagine there are more quieter rooms than ours but it could be a guessing game on finding one. Service here wasn't too bad. Everyone that worked the desk was nice but there were gaps in information we apparently should have known when we first came in that the manager later found out in which she wasn't pleased with. That involved how to get in and out of the hotel when it wasn't check in time or if nobody was at the front desk to have the front door unlocked. What turned out to be an advantage for us is that our hotel room key let us in the front door even though it wasn't supposed to in which it shocked the manager seeing come in the front door when the front desk wasn't open. But again we didn't know better because we weren't informed which way to get in upon check in. That in of itself isn't worth a star deduction but it could be a potential problem for some guests considering what circumstances are dealt. Apparently hotel room keys aren't supposed to let you in the front door. But I have no complaints about the room itself. It's small but it's an old hotel and plenty comfy. It was just all the disruptive noise that makes me ponder the experience here. read more

The room itself was fine. I didn't have a problem with the bathroom being down the hall. People were quick and it was almost always unoccupied. My issue was with the bar music going on way too long and being way too loud. I wasn't right over the bar but nonetheless it was super loud until nearly midnight every night I was there (Wed., Thurs., Fri.) I think it's nice when bars have live music, but why does it have to be SO loud for SO long, esp. with hotel patrons trying to rest right above? Also tons of bar goers out on the street smoking and being jovial right under hotel windows very late. Some towns have adopted noise rules to counter disruptions such as these. It's particularly annoying when deliveries on S. Franklin Street start at about 6 a.m., and go on for quite awhile due to all the bars and liquor stores. So be forewarned. Noisy. read more

If you stay here during the summer, bring a sleeping mask because this historic hotel (which is *not* ADA-compliant) in the Land of the Midnight Sun doesn't have blackout curtains. You'll want to pack shower shoes too, because everyone shares a bathroom and shower hostel-style. Also, bring ear plugs; so the loud drunks and homeless that congregate directly in front of the hotel after being ejected from bars don't wake you... or the trash truck at 4:30am... or the street sweeper truck at 3am and again at 3:30am. Better yet, find a different hotel, this place is sketchy AF. Oh yeah, while they may have wi-fi, the router isn't connected to the internet, so it's absolutely worthless. The bar is pretty trashy too, with substandard service and numerous over-served obnoxious patrons. I wouldn't feel safe here if I weren't a tall, cishet white dude. Caveat emptor. read more

A nice, rowdy Alaska bar. Stopped in here LATE on a Friday night and they had a fun loud, local band and gaggle of tipsy locals. Even the bartender seemed to be...into imbibing. Some above-average taps and great, historic ambiance. Not cheesy-historic either, historic-historic. I can't comment on the rooms here, everything in Juneau was booked up while we were in town. Pretty cool old bar in the heart of touristy Juneau. Has a great little Alaska feel to it. But really, it was just a chill bar with some bar grub and bar libations. Bartenders are friendly enough and the décor is pretty interesting... we weren't there for the live music but the walls are plastered with things to see and read. This is the oldest operating hotel in Southeast Alaska and it maintains it's unique old feel with it's deep, dark wood and it's vintage rugs and furniture. Kinda fun to stop in and have a round of drinks, shoot the breeze and maybe order a snack. I would have liked to have checked out the hotel or get some more history on the place but, unfortunately folks, I didn't. We did learn that the hotel was built in the early 1900's by just 4 men and it took about 6 months to complete. It's Victorian feel is very welcoming and we did enjoy our stop. CHEERS!!! read more

The cheapest hotel in Juneau. And still, I was happy to pay almost $100 more a night to move. I wouldn't leave a bad review if people tried, but when they are surly, defensive, and just couldn't care less; it is pretty tough to ignore. The bathroom is down the hall and can't be entered without a key code. Not that anyone would want to enter because the toilet was encrusted with crap. There was no soap in the soap dispenser in either of the two bathrooms over the two days. I did point this out to the maid who was cleaning, but I think she refused to clean it as she did restock the toilet paper, and the paper towels. My wife wouldn't use it and chose to walk two flights of stairs down with a brace due to a torn MCL to use another bathroom. In the 48 hours that we stayed there I pointed it out twice. I was told it was very difficult. Well, there's nothing difficult about basic sanitation. I suggested perhaps they should manage by walking around and check things like bathrooms out. I got an eye roll, and the desk clerk went back to sleep in her chair. The mattress was hard and hammocked and gave both my wife and I back aches in the morning. My advice is to check out the bar as it is historically charming, the bartender smiles, and does a great job, and even the live music was really good. Oh, and the bathrooms were spotless there. I've never left a yelp review before, but I do believe the market place is sometimes the only way you're gonna get people to have pride in her work. read more

This is 100% my type of bar. If I lived here this would no doubt be the place I would go on a regular basis. I am sure there are other cool bars in town but I don't see how anything could beat this. From the front it looks like some old junky place but only one part of that is true. It is old, it's an old authentic saloon. It is clean but shows it age. In a good way. You can tell this is not a new place made to look old. It has that genuine old historic feel. It is dark and wooden with fun paintings of scantily clad women. They have a full bar and I was happy to see plenty of local craft beers on tap. Cool old old hotel/bar on the National Registry of Historic places. We had one of two rooms in the entire hotel with its own bathroom. The rest of the rooms have shared facilities. The structure is over 100 years old, so no, it's not going to look sparkling clean, although it definitely is. Our beds were comfy, clean, the dressers and other furniture were period pieces, or appeared so. We could hear the bar from our room, late late on open mike night, but unless you are super uptight this shouldn't bother you, hey, I'm on vacation! We arrived super duper early off the ferry and our room was not ready although Ky tried his hardest to get us in. He held our luggage for us while we went to breakfast and then off to whale watch. There is no elevator, there are at least two long staircases to get to your room. None are on the first floor, all rooms on floors 2 and 3. Laundry facilities onsite. We used them and they were fine - the soap vending machines were out and housekeeping gave us soap and fabric softener sheets to tide us over. So sweet! Room 315 is supposedly haunted! The bartender made a good strong drink. It is dark in there, with original woodwork and velvet wallpaper. It's something you should definitely see. Ky is the coolest dude ever encountered on the night shift at any hotel in the country. Staying here was definitely an experience. I'm ok with an offbeat hotel - this was a good place to stay, right in the heart of touristy Juneau. read more

I somehow managed to research this one, single historic spot before embarking on a cruise through the inside passage. Luckily, my instincts were spot-on in making a beeline for this spot the minute I left the giant barge-o-people for the pretty town of Juneau. At first I walked into the Alaskan Hotel, thinking that the entrance would be shared (like the name of the place). Nope - the bar entrance is next door. Dark...red flocked wallpaper...tiffany lamps...vintage nudie photographs framed on the walls...and ice cold beers on tap. Hello, Alaska! The bartender was friendly and affable and even though the bar itself smelled kind of funny inside, I sat for a long time and watched the people walk by. I would highly recommend this bar over the other larger, shinier, more tourist-oriented establishments near the port. read more

The hotel was established in 1913 and it shows in every aspect. Its a bit crooked to one side and all the rooms are not alike. Ours was a very congested one with no kitchen. No fridge or microwave. Had to ask one of the staffs at the front desk to keep some left over food in her room. Some rooms have shared baths. Thankfully we had a bathroom but there was no door! We wanted to try staying at a place with a history, contrary to the usual chain hotels we stay during our trips. We stayed for 5 nights for about 100$ per day. read more

I'm just getting time to finally write a review from my trip back to Juneau! I stopped in the Alaskan bar where I was referred to stop after my sister was there on a slow night last year and loved the place and told me how much she loved the bar and the bartender! I have owned a bar for years- Charlie (girl) was the same bartender by chance when I stopped by Thursday afternoon! The same one my sister told me about last year when she was on her cruise. The bar is so quaint, it's got old stained glass and tons of beer and a night life that we only got a glimpse Into and the most kind, energetic, accomplished and hardworking bartender I've ever met. I honestly gave her my card and told her that she could come work for me anytime. She made us and everyone else in the bar feel so special like we weren't just tourists on a boat. She told us about all her travels and her being in school to be a pilot! I've just checked out after an extended stay at the Alaskan Hotel & Bar. I very much enjoyed the time. The music coming up from the bar below, I found colorful and comforting throughout my stay as a guest at the hotel. Many tasty restaurants and interesting shops were easily within walking ‍ distance. There's a small convenience across the street from the hotel, Rainbow Foods health food store up the hill only 3 streets up the hill. Foodland IGA grocery store is only about less than 1/2 mile away. The owner, Bettye, has been very fair and courteous to me throughout my stay. I avoided to not disturb the guests and they were civil and nice. The hotel employees became good friends. I really liked that. What a time. So colorful inside the hotel & bar as well as outside the hotel and bar. The music , the music , the music . Yes, downtown is slightly urbanized, but the hotel and bar always felt like a safe reprieve. I could always feel comfortably removed from the havoc of the world there. I also liked the very fast WiFi. I shared the bathroom which was always clean with the fresh smell of cleansers and bleach. There's also functional coin laundry on the site which was very helpful. Who has a live band on a Monday afternoon? The Alaskan Hotel and Bar---that's who! We stumbled upon this little gem while walking the streets of Juneau. We were intrigued by the live music that could be heard all the way down the block. They had a great folk band playing and we enjoyed their selections of local beers on tap. Although we did see a couple of tourists sprinkled in the crowd it seemed to be mostly locals. We highly recommend you stop in for a pint the next time you are in town. read more

By far my favorite hangout in Juneau. There's a giant range in the crowd - folks on business, locals, travelers, fisherman, you name it! A couple of nights it was a bit too crowded to deal with, but overall, of all the hangouts in Juneau, this was the one I was happiest to be perched at with my laptop and there were always decent people to talk to. As the other restaurants etc in town closed, you'd see the staff start coming over to the Alaskan because - well - the town really is that small, but it's a good place to get to know everyone. read more

If you stay at the hotel you might be kept up all night by the bar music or neighbors, or maybe not. You might not like the smell of the halls or rooms. You might not feel safe; you may feel safer spilling into the street looking for a drink. Personally I'd rather sleep under the bridge, cleaner air, quieter. Review for the HOTEL , not the bar: I wish that there were lower categories to choose from rather than "1 star/not good" so that I could rate this hotel accurately. It would come in dead last, only because the infamous Tokyo Hotel in Chicago is no longer in operation. Bottom line: DO. NOT. STAY. HERE. I have never felt more UNSAFE in my entire life. I have spoken twice with Bettye, the owner, regarding my concerns. The first time, she argued with me, dismissed my concerns, and took no responsibility at all for the various safety issues I raised. She then told me that she needed to get back to work and that she was busy and had things to do. I responded that if she was truly working, then addressing a highly unsatisfied guest's complaint should be her top priority. She ignored me, put me on hold, made a clerk get on the phone with me, refused to have the call transferred back to her, and finally got back on the phone. I explained that her current behavior was extremely unprofessional and that I was insistent that my traumatizing experience at her establishment be acknowledged, in the first place, and fully refunded, in the second place. She laughed at me, saying that even though my time spent at her commercial establishment was "terrible," she would not be refunding my 2-night stay because I had "slept" (there). Bettye added that it was like eating a hamburger that wasn't very good and then asking for your money back after you finished the meal. She also noted that providing a refund would be too complicated, difficult, and challenging on her end. I indicated that this was concerning to me, as she kept reminding me during our conversation that she had been "running" the Hotel for the past 47 years, and some who was been in that role for so long should know all the details of that position. She replied this this was the oldest hotel in Alaska. I responded that this "fact" was irrelevant to our converstation, as was the information regarding the redecorating she has done over the years, which she used to defend herself with regard to my concerns. Then Bettye asked me to "speak with someone else" about this. I repeated, as I had told her at the beginning of this conversation, that I was a single female, traveling alone. This should have focused her attention back on my safety concerns. Instead she asked again to speak to someone else "with me or who knows me" about this, instead of myself. I reiterated that she needed to speak with me, the adult who lived the experience of her hotel. She became even more flustered, saying that she needed to go back to work, that she had nothing more to say, and that she was unable and unwilling to do anything more for me. She then HUNG. Up. ON. ME. I called the hotel/same phone number back, and the answering service explained that all staff were busy with other calls at that time. I left a message for the manager to please return my call, as my concerns, requests, and questions had been sidestepped and still needed addressed. The owner called me back (from a different phone number!) a few hours later. When I answered, Bettye asked me if I had called about the studio apartments she has for rent. I said no and I asked what her name was. She replied, "I'm not going to give you my name. The only reason you could be calling and asking to speak to me is if you saw my ad on Craig's List about the studio apartments I have for rent. If it's not about the studio apartments, then you have no other reason to be contacting me." I laughed in disbelief and exasperation and said, "you know who I am. We spoke earlier today. About my bill (regarding my stay at The Alaskan Hotel (& Bar), and my experience at your establishment. Remember?" She said, "no we didn't. No. I don't know who you are. I've never talked to you before. I'm hanging up now." And she did. Again. While I was still speaking. Shortly after these confusing, frustrating, and bizarre conversations with Bettye, I began traveling in an area without cell phone reception for 48 hours. I still have exciting things to do during this vacation, and I do not want to ruin any of them by wasting time and continuing to get the runaround from, and be disrespected by, Bettye, the owner. But I will not let this go. I do not want anyone to have a similar experience at The Alaskan. I expect more than an "I'm sorry you feel that way."
