Louies is a rare thing in Juneau- a true locals bar. Living 3 miles away, on the other side of the bridge, we don't quite qualify as locals but we go there when we're on that end of town. Some of the best bar tenders in the biz here, professional and friendly without being over-familiar. Not the best beer selection: the past several visits the beer on tap has been: IPA, IPA, IPA, double IPA, APA, cider. But decent drinks. A respite from tourists in the summer. A place with a dedicated clientele: on a recent visit a group came in all bearing salty snacks, potato chips, pretzels, whatnots. I asked the fella next to me what was going on, and he grumbled that the bar wouldn't buy snacks so they had to. To me that's a family situation. Like, I am ANNOYED because you are NOT PULLING YOUR WEIGHT, Susan, but we are family so I'm just gonna BUY THE POTATO CHIPS MYSELF and keep showing up. I should note here: my sports loving husband would give this bar a 3. The t.v. is awkwardly placed. The interior of the bar has an updated look that looks slick and nice but like many industrialish, concrete and bare wood places the acoustics are godawful. And Mister doesn't care for the awkward placement of the bar. But it's my account and I say 4 stars.

Great local ( renovated about 2 yeaRs ago) spot. We particularly love eating outside at Nano's grill and enjoying a cocktail on the patio.

I recently returned from a lovely 10 day Alaskan cruise. My wife & I had a great time checking out…read more4 different ports along with 6 days at sea. The ship was the epitome of modern luxury and the port cities catered to all the tourists needs. But at some point, I needed to get a little down and dirty, to get away from the crowds of visitors. To me, Alaska is still frontier, and I needed to experience just a taste of it. From the recommendation of a grizzled cruise staff, my wife & I found ourselves at the Alaskan Hotel and Bar, enjoying a pint and taking in small piece of history. While a few tourists did wander in, most of the patrons seemed local and knew each other and the staff. We watched from the far end of the bar and soaked in the atmosphere while enjoying our beers. Though there was a single acoustic guitarist playing from the stage, the bar was mostly still and quiet, a welcome respite from the throngs of outsiders on the street, veering in and out of the jewelry stores and tacky souvenir shops. Both of us needed this time to recharge, to enjoy a different side of Alaska than we'd seen, to be around normal people again. Does this bar have all the amenities? Are fancy cocktails the standard fair? Is the furniture new? All those answers are no. But the drinks are strong and the bathrooms are clean. And for a tired tourist, this is the most welcome sight.

I think this bar was a really cool stop in Juneau. Old historical feel and cool storyread more

Surprisingly, there aren't many places in Juneau where u can get fresh fish (that isn't fried). But…read moreThe Hangar impressed- they have a huge menu of traditional fare, so easy to find something for everyone. We got the "First Mate Plate" @ $33.99 (combo of fresh halibut & salmon), and (2) Halibut Tacos @ $26.99 + substituted the rice & beans for a cup of chowder:$4.50. This was so good, we came back the 2nd night and got the same thing! We were a party of 2 - 1st night had reservations and got seated right away; 2nd night walked in and got seated after a 5-minute wait. I think it's the larger parties that have to deal with the long wait or we were just lucky. Call in for reservations regardless. Noisy & busy but good food & good service.

After years of searching, I have found the best onion rings and calamari, right here in Juneau…read more It's a huge plate of crispy calamari with tartar and cocktail sauce. A lot of places have shrunk their calamari serving size down and serve it with an aioli that isn't always great. The basket of onion rings were crisp and hot with the right texture. I know it's frozen but it's the old fashioned onion rings that many places have changed the breading or undercooked or overcooked. Employees are very nice here. Our server was so nice. She checked on us a few times and refilled our drinks. We also had the one pound Alaskan king crab legs. It was just the way I remembered having it when restaurants used to serve Alaskan king crab legs. They're super fat meaty long legs. It was warmed up and served with lemon and butter. It was just enough for two of us. It probably would not have fed my son. He is a big eater and he would have ordered a steak. If I was hungry or had a crab craving, it might not have been enough for just me. We've also been over eating on a cruise ship for 6 days. We shared the apple crisp ala mode for dessert. It was not crisp but it did have some crumbs thrown on top like a cobbler. It was in a warm sauce and topped with ice cream. It's a cute place with a wharf view. The tables are not on top of each other. They gave us plenty of napkins and a bib too. If I lived in the area, I would be back every month for the calamari & onion rings, and yes the crab legs. The Diet Coke was perfect too, just enough syrup and carbonation. I would definitely come back if I was in the area.
