I've been here a handful of times now...the only recommendation I have for them is to work on their consistency. Just like any restaurant some meals are better than others. I will always order the bone marrow...and I'm always willing to order a red meat dish...but I won't be ordering another pasta dish. However in terms of service it's a hit or miss. It's fascinating how such a good restaurant is located so far away from town. I went here with some friends and I got myself a Tombstone Burger with the Soup of the Day, which was a clam chowder. The clam chowder wasn't that good and came with a pair of saltine crackers. The burger was excellent. It was big and juicy. It was so loaded that I started feeling full after just 3 bites. I have no complaints about the burger, it really hit the spot. I tried a piece of the dulce de leche cake and it was really good as well. Service was a bit slow, but it was also a busy weekend. We recently tried Iron Cactus, and honestly, it was just okay. The location is definitely out in the boonies, not somewhere you'd expect to find a restaurant, and not very close to much else. The ambience kind of reminded me of The Broken Bit, if you've ever been there, kind of rustic and relaxed. As for the food, a couple dishes stood out, but the overall experience didn't really blow us away. My sister-in-law had a penne pasta with black beans, corn, cilantro, and some kind of sauce (wish I remembered the name!) it was really flavorful and probably the best dish we tried. A few family members ordered steaks, but they were on the dry and chewy side. My dad really enjoyed his pork chop with baked potato and Brussels sprouts, that was a solid choice. I had the shrimp Alfredo with broccoli, which was just okay,basic and lacking flavor. The vibe took a weird turn when a drunk guy approached my brother and offered him a bite of his sandwich (yes, seriously). It made the whole table feel uncomfortable, and we ended up heading out earlier than planned. Overall, it was an "eh" kind of experience. I was craving a really good juicy steak today (Sunday, March 29th) but didn't feel like firing up the BBQ grill or driving for 45-60 minutes towards the L.A. area to a good steakhouse. I had heard of The Iron Cactus steakhouse from friends and coworkers, so I decided to do a recon and give them a try for the first time. They close at 9:00 PM on Sundays, and I got there at around 7:15 PM-7:30 PM. Walked into the place and was pleasantly surprised to see a western style decor and country western music playing in the background, and the restaurant looked and smelled clean. The main dining area looked to be about half full, and so I grabbed a menu at the front podium and looked it over while I waited about a minute until a friendly waitress saw me, greeted me, and seated me at a nearby booth. They seemed to be a little short on staff, probably because it was a Sunday evening, but I only had to wait a couple of minutes until the waitress came back and took my order for an iced tea. My drink came a minute later and I went ahead and ordered the filet skewers as a starter and the big 24-ounce Porterhouse steak (ordered rare) with added grilled onions and mushrooms as a topper, along with a side of mashed potatoes and mixed veggies, along with a side salad. The dinner salad came a few minutes later, BUT the waitress didn't even bring me a fork/knife/napkin, so I had to wait about 5 minutes until another waitress came by and I asked her for some utensils. It was a mixed greens salad, which I don't like as much as a regular salad made with lettuce, but that was my fault for not paying attention to what kinds of greens were in the salad that I ordered. The salad and blue cheese dressing was good, BUT the croutons in the salad were soft and stale, not hard and crunchy, which was surprising given the warm dry climate here in southern CA compared to the moist humid climate in Florida (where anything like chips, croutons, bread, crackers, etc. goes soft and stale very quickly) where I grew up. The filet skewers appetizer came out about 15 minutes later, and all I can say is "OMG!!!" when I saw the nice big chunks of rare meat, gravy and garlic bread. This was like a meal in itself. The meat was cooked perfectly and the flavor was also OMG awesome! The garlic bread strips tasted so good and I used the bread to to dip into the gravy underneath the meat skewers. The Porterhouse steak came about 10 minutes after I got the filet skewers. The steak was cooked perfectly and had that great flame grilled flavor. The side of mashed potatoes and mixed veggies were also cooked perfectly and tasted great. I was already so full from the filet skewers appetizer that I couldn't even eat half of the Porterhouse steak, so I took the rest of it home. Too full to even think about seeing what was on the dessert menu. So overall, the atmosphere and food were pretty good, but the service was kinda slow and spotty. I never ever got to get a refill on my drink the whole time while I was eating. The food was good enough that I'll come back again, on a weekday for lunch or an early dinner, and hopefully the service will be better. BTW, the steaks here at The Iron Cactus are better cuts of meat and aren't greasy and mostly fat like the steaks I've gotten at the Black Angus chain of steakhouses. read more

It was so tender you can cut the steak with a butter knife!!! The steak came with two sides. Their sides are seasonal so they do change. We got the chicken and rice coup, the corn bread, and the squash. The chicken and rice soup was so tasty - it had a nice herbal flavor! The butternut squash was blended with nuts as a topping. The corn bread was served in a very unique way - it was moist and tasty without being overpowering sweet. We ordered the old fashioned with blantons whiskey. It was very very smooth! We also ordered the cocktail special, the Jalisco old fashioned. It was very good, it had a unique twist on a classic cocktail. It was not spicy, it was smooth and surprisingly flavorful. The fries have season salt on them, but it's light. I usually don't like season salt, but these fries were superb and their ranch was great. Nice to have another quality restaurant on the far west side of the valley. It's in a strip mall but that goes away once you're inside. I would give it less than 3 stars if this had been our only experience there. Previous visits have been very good. 4-5 stars. This time wasn't good at all. Almost every plate had burned elements. The loaded fries had burned al pastor meat, the burger had one burned side, the grilled chicken sandwich had a burned bun and dry chicken, the Alfredo pasta items all lacked salt (flavor), the chopped chicken Cobb salad was fine, though the chicken was dry. The wait staff was friendly. We already had to ask for extra dressing, extra sauce, a missing place setting... and there were too many food items to complain about so we didn't. Maybe they would've remade the items but we had 3 tired kids with us and weren't about to wait again. First and foremost, my server was amazing! Very knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. The starter was the brisket burnt ends with cheese grits and elote dip. The Brisket was a solid 7.9/10. Grits were creamy, and the cheese melted perfectly. The grits needed salt, but I faunderstand you can add more salt, but it's impossible to remove, so there are no issues there. I don't like Brussel sprouts, so don't trust my opinion on them, lol. ??/10. Potatoes were, ehhh, not bad, but definitely not the best I've had .. lacked presentation and depth of flavor.. something was just missing. 7/10 The spicy clam Chowder was S+ tier. I've never had Spicy clam Chowder, but it was amazing. Nice level of heat. Great with bread or crackers. 9.3/10. Now the steaks ... I ordered my steak medium rare. And it was more medium or closer to medium well. Flavor was consistent with the cut .. but the sear just didn't do it for me. I returned my steak to the kitchen, and they definitely made up for it with the replacement. Was medium rare and perfect. The grilled onions as a topper sent me .. Decided to try The Iron Cactus for the first time last night. The place is setup in a country fashioned way. The atmosphere is pretty rustic, but that expected considering it in Antelope Acres, which is rural. The bar was pretty loud with the patrons talking and laughing that echoed through the restaurant. My wife ordered the pork chop, which had good flavor and was moist. For the price of $26.99 it felt like it was a little on the small side. It was slathered in an apple butter seasoning, which my wife said was a little too much. Her Mac n cheese was made with pinwheel pasta, which seemed a little odd. The vegetable was Brussels sprouts on a some wort of sweet sauce, which she did not like. There were only 2 choices for sides (baked potato and Mac n cheese) and no options for the vegetable except what ever they brought you. I had the 16 oz ribeye. The steak arrived and it was thin, large but flat. It was tender the way a ribeye should be, but for the price of $41.99 it too seemed a little on the small side. It was seasoned pretty heavily too. I got the baked potato which was decent and again it came with the Brussels sprouts. They do not have prices on their menu for their meats (ie pork chop, steaks) so you're kind of taking a gamble with how much it will be and what you'll get. Their special for the night was a 36 oz tomahawk with 2 cocktails, 2 sides and a vegetable for $149.99 . We obviously did do that, but I felt the info needed to be shared. All in all it was decent. I felt it was over priced for the amount of food you get. I will say our server was awesome. She was kind, attentive, but not interuptive. read more
