The location being in Kapaa is, although not one of the recommended tourist sites, actually very good. It's at the halfway point between the north shore and the south shore--thus saving you time to circle the entire island, compared to if you were living in either north or south. The only good thing about this place is the oceanfront view. Very bad customer service. The staff in the front desk need to get a proper customer service training specifically the blonde lady. She is rude and seems to be unhappy every single time i interacted with her. Always seems irritated when approached and never had smile on her face. No thank you, no nothing when we checked out! TV didn't work the entire time (5 days) of our stay, AC barely worked! The cheap breakfast provided runs out early everyday but they make sure they charged you upfront for the resort fee during check in! The beach towels are so old they were so rough on your skin. 50/50 experience here... The good....the rooms all have an ocean view and I was lucky to have a straight shot view from my balcony. The room seemed pretty clean and the shower had good pressure + toiletries like soap, body wash, shampoo, etc. There is a nice sized fridge + grab and go breakfast but nothing special tbh. There is coffee in the room but my maker didn't work properly. I poured in a full pot of h20 but only made a half pot...strange. Bed is comfortable. The bad....the staff that work the front desk are honestly pretty rude. Not sure who hired them. I've seen some complaints and you would think they'd straighten up and change their attitude by now. I asked for another coffee cup and she gave me such a hard time. Never gave it to me and said I had to request 24 hrs in advance. What?! It's a basic request and I was denied. She said she would try to have someone send one up to the room but never did. I'm a guest with a very basic request and she was so rude about it. I booked and paid extra for a room with an ocean view, but the hotel gave me a room facing the pool instead. When I asked to change the room or receive any kind of assistance, the staff refused to help. Their explanation was unbelievable: they told me that "if you walk outside the hotel and see the ocean, that counts as an ocean-view room." This is completely unacceptable and misleading. The graciously upgraded us to a room closer to the ocean. The bad. The air conditioner was broken. We got by with a ceiling fan and ocean breezes for the two nights we stayed there. The cost to stay here is fairly reasonable, especially since you get some gorgeous views of the ocean. I reserved an Oceanfront room, and honestly, that is not what we got and not what we paid for. An Oceanfront would provide a more direct view of the ocean. What we got would qualify for an Oceanview. It actually appears that none of the rooms are really Oceanfront. Please remove the Oceanfront from your advertising because they are NOT Oceanfront. They are Oceanview and partial Oceanview rooms at best. The other issue I have is that the room was booked way in advance and reserved back in 2022. I requested a king bed. Upon arrival, I was informed they could only provide a room with two double beds. They had a king-size bed, but that meant getting an Oceanview instead. I was informed they do not guarantee the bedding. That is disheartening when the room was booked quite some time in advance. I didn't want my partner and I split up into two beds! The hotel has a restaurant connected to it that opens for dinner that has been open since 1973. We did not eat there but prices seemed expensive. It is convenient if you want a nice dinner looking at the ocean and not have to drive somewhere, though. Both the restaurant and the hotel seem dated. No elevators! If you are traveling with luggage, be prepared to haul it up the stairs if you stay on a higher floor. The bathroom had cracks in the wall. The shower handle was loose. Towel rack fell down from hanging a towel on it. Bed and pillows hard. The screen door was hard to open and close and even had a hole near the screen handle. No "do not disturb" sign found in the room, but luckily, I don't think anyone entered our room. There is no table inside the room if you want to eat or have coffee. There is a fridge with a coffee maker on top of it. There is no telephone in the room. No microwave in the room, but they have a community one in the lobby. Soaps provided smelled wonderful. There is a pool but no hot tub. Chairs seem old that are by the pool and facing ocean. The beach towels provided to us were old and didn't feel soft and plush. If you plan on doing anything in the ocean like snorkeling or swimming, I suggest driving to a different beach. This beach is too rocky for those activities. If you want to sunbathe, then you're good. There is a fire pit lit up before dusk, which was a nice touch. I like the ability to use bicycles, and you just sign a waiver and return the bikes when done. You can request a bike lock, but there are no helmets. The bike riding was my favorite perk of the stay. You are provided plastic water bottles that can be refilled with free water, also found in the lobby. There is grab and go breakfast provided in the morning, starting at 7am with prepackaged muffins and danishes, granola bars, fruits, yogurt, cereal, milk, and juices. Group yoga is also provided. We did not participate, but I did see it from the balcony. They had workers cleaning the pool and sweeping the area while the group did yoga. Idk I wouldn't want to hear or see all that when trying to zen out, but that's just me. Let me also mention that you will see many chickens and roosters roaming around. You might not need to set a morning alarm because you will hear crowing around 5 am lol just a warning. The stairway leading to our unit was next to the place where the towels are cleaned and a distressed area behind the dumpsters. This was just an eyesore to me. The housekeepers are nice anytime I bumped into them, though. Another thing is that if they're cleaning a room, you will see trash piled into the walkway, so this is also an eyesore. The walkway is skinny, so I had to walk around Q-tips, empty cans, and bags of trash. I interacted with three different ladies in the lobby, and they all seemed nice. Honestly, if you're looking for a place to stay on a budget, this is okay, but don't expect anything luxurious from it. The resort fee is ridiculous considering how old the place is and in my eyes, it just covers the use of a pool, the breakfast, and yoga that you may or may not utilize. read more

The ISO was a convenient resort located on the Eastern side of Kauai. Initially as we were driving from the airport, I missed the turn and went into the next door resort, which was much fancier, but rerouted and found it. The check-in process was easy, and they gave us some reusable water bottles that we could get filtered water with, which was nice. We were given a room on the third floor, and there were no elevators in site, but the room itself was nice - had a view of the pool and Eastern coast from the lanai, and unlike other reviews that I saw before, the air conditioning was working, and the water did get hot, though relatively low water pressure. Every morning, they have a to-go breakfast available that consists of milk, cereal, yogurt, orange juice, packaged muffins, and granola bars. It is first come, first serve however, and they don't restock, so try to go earlier rather than later if you don't want to be left with plain Cheerios or Chex. There is also a small coffee maker in the room, and you can ask the front desk for new coffee with the filter. The staff was pleasant, the pool was great since it goes all the way to 8 feet deep, and overall there were no issues. The location is great, as it is quicker to get to the North Shore compared to Lihue and Poipu, and the South is accessible within 20-45 mins depending on traffic. Across the street is a Safeway and some other restaurants, and we definitely enjoyed our five night stay here. read more

Great spot! It's a bit friendlier to the budget compared to other spots in Kapa'a so it's expected to get a more laid back service. That being said, the staff was friendly and attentive when we needed help. The room was clean and quaint. Providing a mini fridge, porch and free coffee! The amenities really were what made our stay at ISO so great. They provide morning yoga, complimentary bike rentals, and a continental breakfast (all amenities are daily). The water was nice to look at from the lawn and to put our feet in but we liked to walk further down the beach for swimming. The beach is a bit harsh directly in front of the hotel (depending on the day). The did created a fun/relaxing resort feel. People can chill all day sunbathing, go for a swim in the pool, or eat at the cute restaurant that overlooks the ocean. If you venture down the bike path, you'll find neighboring hotels with oceanfrontu bars (if you want a change of scene All in all, we would visit again! read more

I had to make sure I had my shoes on at all times as I am pretty sure it was the carpet. They should consider ripping out the carpet and placing laminate throughout. We spent 3 nights here over Easter weekend. We had planned a trip to Kauai and wanted to stay here after someone else recommended it. We booked it, but then had to cancel when we postponed the trip by a week. Canceling cost us $200, more than the cost of one night's accommodation. It was worth it, given the situation. Whatever. So we checked in and were told that the room with a king sized bed that we specifically reserved was not available. Instead, we were given a room with two double beds. Not exactly what we were hoping for for our baby moon. They also told us we had to pay a mandatory "resort fee" of around $20/night extra. So we checked in and went to our room. The room was on the third floor and the hotel does not have elevators. Great. When we got to the room, we saw that it had cinder block walls and no air conditioning. So we opened the door to the balcony. Fortunately, there was a screen door, so we left that open most of our stay. At this point we saw we had a nice view. Our room was on the highest floor, right in the middle of the hotel, giving us a great view of the hotel complex and the ocean beyond. Great! That night, we closed the glass door to the balcony before going to sleep. In the middle of the night, we had to switch to the screen door because it was too hot in our room (remember, no A/C). Then in the morning I was awoken by chickens at 7 AM. Although I wasn't thrilled with this, I should have been grateful; the next morning, Easter morning, I was awoken at 5:45. Apparently, the hotel decided to host an Easter sunrise service (with speakers!) for the church across the highway and people were loudly setting up for it that early. The hotel never told us this was going to happen. Again the next morning, I woke up at 7 from chickens. The room itself was ok. It had a decent TV, and they have yoga mats in the room. When you check in, they give you towels and water bottles; you can keep the water bottles. Given the room had cinder blocks, they did about as good a job as I'd expect to make it nice. But the lack of air conditioning was a bigger problem than I expected. Without air conditioning, you are forced to leave the door to the balcony open. This allows any noise from outside, such as roosters crowing, to easily get into your room. The result? You will not sleep in. You will get up early every morning, like it or not. I was not happy about this. Despite all these negatives, there were some good things about the ISO. The hotel had a free breakfast. It's a simple breakfast of oatmeal, mini muffins, maybe some fruit or cereal, but it's right there and free. Although there is no beach at the hotel, all you have to do is walk behind the south building and there's beach there, with no development behind it. The hotel has a water machine to fill up your water bottles, and they have bikes you can use. Also, the location is great. It's right in the middle of the east coast of the island, so you can get almost anywhere on Kauai in an hour. It's also right across the street from 2 shopping centers, with grocery stores and restaurants. Also, it's one of the cheapest hotels on the island. Overall I wasn't thrilled with the place. When I started writing this, I gave them a rating of 3, but after reading my review I lowered it. The lack of air conditioning/being woken up was a bigger problem than I thought, I didn't like being denied the type of room I reserved while at the same time getting slammed for changing my reservation. So it's ok if they screw up my reservation but if I make a change that's not ok? The real problem here is that almost all hotels on Kauai are expensive. I'm not flying thousands of miles for a fancy Hawaiian vacation, I just need a place to chill and sleep at night while on a weekend trip. The ISO is cheaper than the competition, but I wonder if it's worth it. If I were to visit Kauai again, I'd stay elsewhere. read more

The Hotel From Hell It started when they put 3 of us in a room with 1 bed & argued it was only for 2 and that's their policy, 2 people per bed no matter what the relationship. A two bed suite had been confirmed by email but that didn't count. Moved to another room, tub was clogged and could not be fixed, moved again at 10 pm. Got a call next morning about a noise disturbance...quiet hours start at 9 pm...they moved us. Upstairs then downstairs then back upstairs. Stairs are difficult if you are older or disabled. No cleaning service unless requested day in advance. Prices were way too high for this so called resort. Our "suite" had support beams by bed, over closet. No place for luggage. Bait and switch, at front desk a couple was checking in and they didn't give them the room they reserved. Desk clerk looked through other reservations and switched for them. Once checking out the room after we fgot here (and paying) we realize we don't even have a view of the ocean or a renovated room lol. When I brought it up to the front desk, they informed me that this IS the room I booked and I told them I was pretty disappointed and just wanted another room because obviously this was not what I was expecting when I paid so much and expected so much better. But, I was told they were "completely booked." Trying to just deal with it and settle in, we then realize our room also has an outlet hanging from out of the wall!! Amazing. The "Ocean Front" room will be disappointing since the balcony view is directly at the yard and the ocean is off 45 degrees. More commonly known as an ocean view room. The staff is very nice and friendly but the property is very dated and in need of repair and cleaning. The room was small (two full beds) and doesn't have a table, microwave, in-room phone or an elevator. Not a location for any in room dining or beach swimming/snorkeling. The sandy beach quickly turns into shallow, rocky waters. Also, make sure to check the temperature of the mini fridge. This hotel would be a classic example of too good to be true if you booked based on their advertisement on their website! The website says "Castle Resorts...." and the pictures of the rooms/grounds are beautiful and sure does look like a resort. But... you get what you pay for. Price wise, compared to other Kauai hotels, this place was one of the most affordable. And with an ocean front room, I'm not complaining! Would I stay here again... sure. But does it have all the bells and whistles of a resort stay? No. Be aware, this is no resort or even hotel for that matter. It was more like a Super 8 motel. A walk-up three story building with no elevators, the rooms walls were cement brick with paint over it... and the locks on the rooms...I would recommend going on Amazon and buying one of the hotel security locks and bringing it with you because it didn't feel all that secure to me. While we didn't have any problems, I was a little nervous about leaving our stuff. No in room safe either. One MAJOR positive is the view. All rooms have an ocean front view and our view was outstanding! That alone made it worth it. And we were barely in the room so it worked for us. But if you're expecting a plush resort... this isn't it. And the front desk - there's one person (none of who were very pleasant or nice) and they close after 9 or 10pm so no one there to help. There's also no maid service - you have to request it, but on top of it, there's no in room phone so you can't just call the front desk or housekeeping so we ended up not asking. I saw a housekeeper down the way when I opened my door and just asked her to take my trash bag (which I tied up and replaced myself) and we asked for beach towels at the front at check in. So yeah, motel. The room was clean at check in. Our TV did not work most of our stay. We asked it to be fixed and the first time, they didn't. Then the last day they replaced it with a new tv but it wouldn't connect to the internet so we had basic cable only. They also offer a continental breakfast - it's pretty basic but it was a nice touch. Although, no coffee at the breakfast and just individually wrapped muffins/danishes and some cereal and fruit (which runs out fast). No coffee though, you just have what's in your room and you can ask for more. Lastly, no hot tub, just a pool. I stayed here over Easter weekend 2019 and I still vividly remember how things went awry with our hotel stay at the ISO. We island hopped to Kauai for a long weekend babymoon trip. It was going to be the last trip before baby so I was really excited. We arrived at the ISO to find the queen bed we reserved online actually didn't exist. They only have 2 queen rooms in the entire hotel; the rest of the rooms are two doubles or twins. The room was always stuffy, with only one ceiling fan. The lanai was nice but I think the most aggravating thing I experienced while staying at the ISO was experiencing the *sunrise* Easter service that a church was holding on their property. We did not receive any notification or advance warning. In fact, it took us a few minutes to even figure out why gospel music was blasting into our room while we were trying to sleep. I also was really confused my entire hotel stay as to why the hotel makes a point of talking a lot about conservation, but gives you water bottles upon check in. Additionally, the breakfast is FULL of plastic disposables. So much plastic waste for a simple meal was not congruent with their messaging. I did like the fire pit, pool, and large grassy area. I am absolutely SHOCKED that upon check in, the receptionist DEMANDED our vaccine card and covid test in order to allow us access to the hotel. I feel violated, offended and unwelcome to show my personal medical information to an employee of the hotel. The hotel needs to print this on their website if it is the LAW in Hawaii to be vaccinated or covid tested to rent a room here. Not only is this a budget hotel but I paid $600 for 2 nights, so needless to say they are everting too big for themselves over here. The hotel two doors down is a lot swankier and cheaper price. I was able to stay at the ISO for a few days at the end of July. I prepaid for our room a few weeks before our stay through HotelsTonight. Unfortunately our plane had some major issues and we had an emergency landing in honolulu and we had to spend the night in Honolulu before making it to Kauai. By the time we got to Kauai, we were exhausted and just wanted to settle in. It was already a bummer we missed out on a night. When we first arrived and tried to check in somehow my reservation got cancelled. I did call the hotel before hand to update them about the airplane situation and letting them know that we would not be arriving that first night. So I was surprised when that happened. But Ellen who was managing the front desk and was at check in helped tremendously. She listened and understood. She helped me work it out with Hotels Tonight. We were able to get a room on the first floor with an incredible walk out to the ocean! When we got to the room, we loved how spacious the room is. The views of the ocean are incredible and I loved walking up the sound of the ocean every morning. The pool is so clean and fun hang out spot. The roosters will wake you up. It is inevitable because they are all over the island. But I didn't mind it. The hotel did offer sunrise yoga at 6:30 am right by the beach. They also have complimentary breakfast and for the value it is amazing! The breakfast is nothing fancy but still good! The hotel does not have A/C and have fans which honestly was fine for me. The ocean breeze was strong and carried to our room. But I could see why someone doesn't like it but it doesn't bother me personally. I would totally stay here again. read more

THE WORST HOTEL EVER! In an island with 80% humidity and 81F, there is no AC! And it is NOT noted ANYWHERE on the website! After we step into our room, everything we touch has a sheet of moisture. Stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed it! Far enough off the main road that it feels quiet and peaceful. Rooms were clean and fairly modern. One strange thing about the room design was that the corner had 2 straight-back chairs and a small wood table (seemed like wasted space since the chairs weren't comfortable and the table wasn't tall enough to use). Outdoor pool seemed clean and there were lots of chairs around it. I really liked the fire pits, too. The continental breakfast was a little disappointing - toast, some fruit, and some pastries. Fair enough, it is included, but the biggest issue was the coffee - they had 2 keurig machines which in addition to creating lots of waste also created a massive lineup! This hotel has horrible service but you get what you pay for, it's a surprise that this hotel is not lower rated. When we arrived the check in process was smooth but once we got our keycard and tried to enter our room it did not work. We had to go back to the front desk and the lady said it should work but we assured her that it did not and she reluctantly gave us another card and we went back up to our room and same results. Our room card was STILL not working. This time we called the front desk lady and she said maybe the doors battery was dead and she would send a maintenance guy to look. The maintenance guy came pretty quick and used his master card and no problems. He said the battery was fine and that our room key must not be programmed correctly. We had to go back to the front desk a third time to get another card. This time we got in but we found that the room was not cleaned well. there was someone's bra in the corner of the room, there was a dried up contact on the sink, and when we showered the water was luke warm at best. We went back to complain about how messed up the room was and they gave us a different room. This next room was actually okay. The water was very nice and hot. And it was actually clean. If you run into any problems with the room you NEED to inform them, especially if the water is not as hot as you like. The water is NOT supposed to be lukewarm at max settings. It looks like a quiet relaxing place on the beach. What they don't tell you is that they hold events on the lawn with a DJ blasting music at night. The horrendously loud thumping bass was awful, even with my doors all closed. So much for enjoying the breeze and sound of the ocean and going to bed early to be up for sunrise. Completely ruined one of my eight nights. If you like sleeping in concert halls after paying to fly long distance to get there, you'll love this place. This isn't even a hotel. The Hotel is Clean. They say they offer breakfast, but they never have enough. They say fresh fruit but they run out and it's about you showing up late. They don't offer beach towels with out the hassle of towel cards. You can only have one towel. Doesn't matter your size. . They don't clean your room. They have no beach chairs and the bikes they offer are old. You can find other places way more accommodating. They also collect all your money when you check in. So odd read more

Shabby!!!! Almost all ocean view rooms have the pool in the way in this C shaped hotel. The pool is hugged by the building. Ocean front is a better viewing with the pool on the side. This place was a motel, cinder block, small, worn bedding, sticky floor and tiny coffee maker with cheap coffee. Nilla wafer sized "soap", bring your own. I'm just telling it like it is, don't mean to be too picky but you're paying thousands for this vacation, saving money choosing this place is not a good plan. The shabby wears you down. read more

We stayed here because it was a package deal. I had looked at the reviews back in March when we booked our trip. According to other people, it was a good place. Funny how different opinions vary. When we walked in, the room smelled like mildew. The bathroom smelled the worst. The mirror looked like it had been wiped with a dirty wet towel, the shower had mildew almost around the entire thing. We ran to the store and bought Lysol and tried to make the best of it. But, no AC in rooms and it gets hot. 1 ceiling fan. Not even a fan in the bathroom, which would help with privacy issues. The bathroom window faces the walkway everyone uses to get to and from their rooms. The bull shed restaurant is right on the property which is good and bad. We couldn't leave our drapes open (for air) because everyone from the pool and restaurant could see into our room. There's no table in the room, which is odd because there's 2 chairs. Roosters are everywhere here in Kaua'i so can't blame the hotel for the 5:30am wake up calls. The continental breakfast is just that. I myself only had the coffee. The good thing was that there's a decent size refrigerator in the room. We checked out 4 days early. We are now staying in a beautiful condo in Poipu with AC, facing the ocean with sunrise and sunset views. If you're good with this type of hotel, you'll be fine or maybe we were the unlucky ones.
