They have nothing for guests in the lobby. No toiletries incase you forget something. Don't even have coffee in the lobby in the morning. I mean how bare bones can you be? The breakfast is gross junk food. Property is decently nice. Nice yard and pool. No hot tub. Rooms bare minimum no closet or table. Beds pretty comfortable. Only one lock on room doors, would prefer two since they open to outdoors. The front desk people were not friendly or helpful. For the price I think the service should be better. Best part about it is convenient location on the coast and that you can walk on the bike trail to other nearby hotels to use their amenities and find some decent coffee in the morning. read more

My husband and I were really pleased with the ISO. I have to admit, I was worried initially after reading some of the yelp reviews the night before we checked in, but once we got there, those worries dissipated! The ISO is not a resort. It's a boutique hotel and serves as one. The rooms are clean, have a deck or patio space and they provide you with some fun amenities like bikes, sunrise yoga and a grab & go breakfast. I did the sunrise yoga and it was so much fun to be outside, overlooking the ocean and taking part in a yoga practice on the lawn. We also watched the sun rise one morning and it's an incredible view! I would recommend this hotel to anyone who needs a clean, oceanfront property, but isn't looking for a resort style vacation. It's also in a great location and it's easy and fast to get to the north shore and the west. The one downfall is that they don't offer cleaning service. They will replenish any toiletries and towels and you can organize for your linens or trash to be taken out, but it's not the same as having your room cleaned. read more

At the rate of this hotel, I would say that there was very little to complain about. The room came with all of our basic needs and, of course, a beautiful location that was also conveniently close to shops and restaurants. Unfortunately, we were staying during a renovation period so the pool was closed and there was constant construction. We could even smell the products used on the pool renovation in the rooms nearby. We asked to be relocated and the hotel staff accommodated us. If you are planning to stay at this hotel and want to sleep in, then I would request purchasing ear plugs in advance, unless the hotel decides that they would like to provide them complimentary to their guests. The roosters crow constantly, it's Kaua'i. But there's also regular hallway leaf blowing in the morning. If you're vacationing on Kaua'i, then you really want to maximize your daylight since there isn't much of a night life here. Should that be the case, these minor inconveniences are basically an alarm, reminding you that you need to get out and enjoy your day. read more

Kauai was our last stop on our island hopping and we got a deal to stay at the ISO. The pictures on the review pages we saw made the rooms seem like a nice stay. We got to the front desk for check in and the worker at the time wasn't very welcoming but it didn't matter I wasn't going to make much of it. We were gifted with plastic water bottles which you could refill at their water station. Yes, giving plastic bottles that you probably won't take with you after your stay is bad but at least you could refill them? The room we got was on the third floor with a king bed & ocean view. Like others have mentioned there are no elevators and no AC. The no elevators part was a little annoying when having to carry luggage up to the room but I've done that before at other places, oh well. The no AC part was a little inconvenient some of the nights when the breeze just wasn't cutting it. Otherwise, the 1 fan and the sliding door & window let some pleasant breeze in. The rooms are clean and the room itself is not bad for what it is and the bathrooms are also kept clean. The shower head pressure does lack power though. Other mentions that I can also agree on are the continental breakfast is just juice, milk, cereal boxes, little pastries, toast, coffee, & yogurt. It's okay but we only had it once we wanted to experience a better breakfast. There are roosters/chickens near the hotel but it's Hawaii they are everywhere. Overall, this place is what you expect when you see pictures of it. It's not a big chain hotel stay so you can't expect all the great amenities of them. Just got back from staying here for 4 nights over spring break. We really liked it! The room is nice and modern with a spacious king bed and large fridge! There are grocery stores and restaurants in walking distance so we stocked up our fridge on beverages to enjoy on the lanai. Every room has an ocean view and you get a nice ocean breeze and wave sounds. There is no AC in the room but this wasn't an issue since it was cool and rainy while we were there. The breakfast is OK and gets boring after a few days but it definitely saved us money since we didn't have to go out. The Cons: The restaurant on the premises has nightly music from 7-930 pm and this gets annoying fast! We were going to bed early (due to the time difference) and it was hard with the blaring music and people chatting and drinking. The front desk staff are not friendly at all. They seem so bothered if you ask them for help and look so moody and sad. There is no swimmable beach here. It's actually pretty dangerous! You will have to drive somewhere else to swim or snorkel. read more

When you arrive you are not told that there is a 90 minute limit on your restaurant experience. The minute that I paid $500 for the dinner for 6 and tip I was asked to leave because we had been there too long. My party and I were asked to LEAVE! The location is right on the water and the view is nice. But the amenities are minimal, and a bit out of the way. There are no elevators for people with issues. You also must be prepared before with water and supplies because there are no machines for after hours and the desk closes at 10pm. The smart tv has basic cable with a guide after flipping many channels to find. I guess other guests have issues with their tvs even working. Not the biggest priority but it would be nice to have more options than low res cable at the end of the day. The breakfast was also a bit, minimal I should say. Muffins and yogurt. Lots of pros and cons with this place. The pros- location is convenient, restaurant basically connected, fire pit, decent pool, relaxing lounge chairs to watch the ocean. We also got an updated room and found it to be fine. We are not fancy, just want clean! Now the cons- for what you get in the room, the price is honestly unacceptable. I've been to Hawaii several times and expect things to be pricy, but if you're going to charge upwards of $500 a night there should be a microwave in my room...give me a break lol. There is a community microwave in the lobby which closes at 11 I believe. There are zero lights on the back lawn, like it is pitch black scary. The pool has no lights either. I guess they don't want anyone swimming past 7 pm. There should definitely be some flood lights or at least string lights for safety purposes. My mom requested a second floor room months ago, and they confirmed that's what we would get, and we were on the first floor. This is a terrific hotel and an excellent location. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. After a wonderful week in Kauai, and a desire not to check out 8 hours before our red-eye flight home, the front desk was more than accommodating in moving the incoming guest into our room, and allowing me to pay $10 an hour extra allowing me a much later check out time. A wonderful bonus after hiking and swimming all day, and getting a chance to shower and having a safe place to store our luggage before our flight. Our room was quite clean, comfortable bed, a nice lanai, and wonderful sunrises if you can manage to get up early enough. A nice quiet ceiling fan helped keep the room cool during the night. The room has a small fridge and a large flat screen TV with decent programming for the little time we spent in the room. Note: They do not have a microwave, hair dryer, iron or ironing board - small negatives, and everything you can get if you want to take the walk to the front desk. The free continental breakfast is a little week. Only provide coffee and milk and water to drink, no fruit juices (Really - in Hawaii?) Mini muffins, toast and bagels and the main stay for chow. Also packaged hot cereals. Comparable to the local hotels, prices are very competitive. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the island of Kauai, and would definitely stay here on a return visit. read more

Ok- I've never left a yelp review in my life. I'll be fair, honest, and truthful. The rooms themselves are not bad and were clean. The location in town as well as to the ocean was amazing and honestly probably the saving grace of our experience. My Husband and I had our honeymoon in Kauai and booked all our hotels in advance and opted to pay for all of our hotels in full, in advance, or so we thought. Our other hotels listed all their fees up front and we paid them and had fantastic experiences. We did the same thing with the ISO, opting to pay in advance online, (we thought) but when we showed up, were told we had to pay an additional resort fee (was like $80 extra). which really sucked cause we were under the impression we had already paid all our fees and I think it's kind of not smart on the part of the hotel to spring a fee like that on your guests upon check in. Secondly, I thought this was a typical hotel and so had never even though to inquire if there was AC in the rooms. We walked up into our room and in August, it was pretty hot. We didn't see anything for an AC so I went back down to the desk to inquire and the lady at the desk quite literally laughed at me and said "No, there's no AC." We had already paid for it all so we decided to just throw the sliding glass door open each night with just the screen closed and luckily the wind was steady all night so it wasn't as miserable as it could have been. Oh and the other thing was that the bathroom windows face the walkway and have no way of covering them and you feel like people can most definitely see you if they happen to glance into the window. If there's no AC, there's no AC, and that's fine, but I wish it had been more apparent because being on our honeymoon we wanted to stay somewhere comfortable and then to be laughed at for asking nicely..... and then to be told we had yet another fee to pay upon check in... Bottom line is I have stayed at a Hostel or two that had better accommodation and comfort, nice staff, makes you feel taken care of. Overall decent experience. You cannot find a better priced hotel with an ocean view in Kauai. Rooms were clean and had balconies which overlooked the ocean. If you have more than 3 people they will make you get two rooms even if there are two beds in the room. They provide you with reusable water bottles which can be refilled in the lobby. There is a grab-n-go breakfast every morning (cereal, fruit, muffins, granola bars). The hotel provides rental bikes everyday on a first come serve basis with no additional cost because it is included in the $30/day resort fees. There is a top rated steakhouse located within the hotel. Room service is only available upon request 24 hours in advance. In order to replenish room towels you must bring them to the lobby to exchange. The front office workers could be friendlier especially because of how much interaction takes place between exchanging towels/requests. read more

We had to open the sliding door to get some air in, and even then it was muggy. Their water pressure and temperature sucks, doesn't get hot enough and the pressure is weak. There's no microwave in the room, but in the lobby is available till 11pm. The pool looked nice but small, they do have a sunrise yoga and bike rental for free. There's no elevator so you need to use the stairs. And the breakfast to go is basic cereal, muffins, granola bar, milk, orange juice and yogurt. We stayed here because they offered a great kama'aina discount. Pros: + Beachfront, but not a swimmable beach + Cute room interior, balcony to chill on + Mini fridge and TV + Amenities include sunrise yoga, rentable bikes, grab-n-go breakfast (we didn't use any of these) + Lots of parking during the day (gets kind of crowded during dinner time because of the restaurant) Cons: - No AC, but the fan + ocean breeze are more than enough - No microwave (I even called front desk to see if I could borrow one but nope) - Equipment is outdated. TV hinge was unstable, alarm clock display didn't work - Very unassuming exterior as you drive up to the property Tips: * Take the left turn at the lighted intersection, not the one by their sign since that is a one-way exit. * Definitely check out Kenji Burger, on the main road right outside of the property. * Drive from ISO to Poipu is nearly 40 mins, to Waimea is nearly an hour, to Hanalei can be 1.5 hours+ depending on traffic. read more

Beautiful space and nicely decorated. The room we had looked dated and felt like a college dorm with the brick walls. What was horrid was the flying roaches we found in our room. No we did not leave our door open at all norr had good out. To make matters worse its 100 degrees and totally humid in the room with only a fan to keep you cool. We eventually opened the glass door (kept the screen door closed) woke up at 4AM scratching myself to death with all the bug bites on my arm. Not sure if it was bed bugs or other unwanted guests. They even have a warning sign on our counter about unwanted bugs in the room. Not sure if that warrants an excuse to allow such critters in our room. But seriously... get some AC going. It was almost easier sleeping outside because at least we aren't in a humid Carbon monoxide filled death chamber with just a fan to attract all the bugs to feast while we slept. The views are breathtaking and a good place to stay. I was really excited for the space until our recent experience. This place is OK. We used our credit card points on it as we planned a last minute trip to Hawaii. The place looked promising but it was a bit disappointing when we got there. The lobby looked like it was recently upgraded and it feels like they might have just transitioned to new management. When we got to the room, our "ocean view" was visible if we looked out and to the right corner, otherwise we were just looking at the other rooms across from us. The room smelled like mold as soon as we walked in. We were surprised to find no AC so we kept the doors open to get a breeze to come through the room. I think next time we will need to make sure to Yelp the place before booking. Looks like others have already mentioned the same issues. So, you definitely get what you pay for here. This is one of the cheapest hotels on the island. There's no AC, but I didn't notice much because the ceiling fan and ocean breeze kept it cool enough. I don't want to know how it would be in the middle of the summer though. The location is perfect! Right on the beach and not far from restaurants and local shopping. The chickens.... they are literally everywhere but that's Kauai and there's no getting around that and they will wake you up as early as 5am. Bring earplugs. There are no porters so pack light because if your room is on an upper floor, you're in for a workout or a strained back. The free water bottle is nice and there's a purified water filling station in the lobby which is really handy. They have free bike rentals but you'd have to grab them early. Like by 8 or 9am. Since you have to leave your windows open or else you'll pass out from heat exhaustion, I do wish they had a quiet hour rule. A very loud family with children were extremely loud out on the lawn area which was right outside my door. It was after 11pm and extremely hard to fall asleep. My last gripe, when I walked into my room the first night without having even set foot on the beach, there was sand on the hardwood floor part of my room, like a lot of sand and no I didn't track it in myself. Extremely uncomfortable to take off my shoes and be walking on tracked sand that wasn't mine. Made me wonder what housekeeping actually does. That's about it. Good stay but not great. Oh yea, front desk could stand to be a tad bit more welcoming. read more

Our room was located on the first floor which had doors that opened onto the beach was probably the most beautiful view. The cleaning staff were nice and pleasant and did a good job. The minus 3 stars comes from the check in process. If you're in the industry of customer service, maybe you should have a smile on your face when you're checking in your guests and maybe you shouldn't talk to your guests like they're bothering you. Bc you're probably in the wrong business, since it seems like you don't enjoy what you do. Especially when the check in process is the first impression you get of a hotel and sometimes even the place you're staying in, wouldn't you want to present that in the best light. Got charged for a resort fee, which I still have no idea is for, and when asked about it got more attitude. Nice hotel in great location. I had never been to Kauai but have lived on Oahu for 8 years. My husband and I were taking a quick anniversary/birthday trip so finding some place with an ocean view and a good price was important. The view from our lanai was perfect. The staff is friendly. They have a low resort fee which can be hard to find. The fee included yoga, a reusable water bottle, and continental breakfast. They also have bikes you can rent. There are grocery stores and shops close by so we walked everywhere. My only complaint is that the 2nd day there (which was my birthday and our anniversary) we got up early to get into the pool before the sun got to hot only for it to be closed until between 11 & 12 for cleaning. This is a decent motel in a good location just a few miles from Lihue airport and walkable to downtown Kapaa. My biggest issue was no AC. Hawaii can be sweltering hot even in November, and for the price per night at this hotel plus a hefty "resort fee," it's totally unacceptable for it not to have AC. Also, no in-room microwave and the rooms are kind of dirty...sheets look old and stained and I found a chip on the floor that made it clear it hadn't been thoroughly vacuumed before I arrived. For what you pay you get clean rooms, quick breakfast, morning yoga, bike rentals, a pool, and basically a private beach, which is beautiful. I was also pleasantly surprised to see they had installed air conditioning units in the rooms, since this was something other reviewers had complained about. The hotel is located on a very busy highway, so you should add an extra 20-30 minutes to your ETAs when traveling. There are also a lot of noisy roosters around most of the day. Overall, I would consider staying here again if traveling to Kauai. read more

Two stars due to not so friendly customer service, no room AC, no elevator and lack of security. The big guy checking us in needs some customer service training. There was no air condition in the room. The fan was only circulating hot air. We had to leave our sliding door open all night for a cool breeze but there was none. If I knew they didn't have AC in the room I would've stay somewhere else. 3 floors but no elevator. I'm a 100% disabled vet with bad ankles and knees but had to haul my luggage's to the 3rd floor which I didn't care but what if others with worst disabilities checking in and there's none available on the 1st floor? Didn't see one security person. Perfect location but not being utilized to its full potential to attract more customers. My wife and I had a fantastic week at the ISO. It's clean, quiet, and reasonably priced for a breathtaking ocean view. We came to Kauai to get out in nature every day and stay active after an eternity in COVID lockdown. Our favorite part of our ISO experience was our FREE daily morning yoga class by the ocean and complimentary use of their beach cruiser bikes. We very likely will return to the ISO for the morning yoga alone. However, if we bring our parents or niece and nephew, we would likely have to choose a resort with AC and elevators. The water temp didn't bother us, since we prefer cooler showers after hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. We recommend booking a second or third floor room with an ocean view and be ready to keep your ceiling fan on and balcony door and window open 24/7 to keep the room cool with fresh sea breeze (there are screens for bugs and birds). read more

Will have been staying here for 5 days total. The room is very clean and has a beautiful view of the ocean. We were made unaware that the pool would be out of service during our stay which kinda sucks as that was one of our reasons for choosing this hotel. The continental breakfast is not well stocked so if your not getting your breakfast before 8 am there will be no cream cheese, bread, muffins, or water in the coffee machine. It's a beautiful hotel just wish the staff would keep up with the amount of usage the hotel seems to get. However we did have a problem with our room key and the maintenance was very helpful to get it fixed. read more

We love this place. It was comfortable when we had spent 3 nights of pretty harsh camping (rain, wind, sand). But really, its not just on the merits of being indoors. Staff is friendly, right on the ocean, beautiful beach, cardboard hangers (so green!), picnic tables outside where we enjoyed our lunch, just across the street from alot of shops and stores inc a laundromat (laudromat express! Clean and large capacity with change machine). The filtered water dispenser was also fantastic!! Minus one star for the crazy waste generating breakfast. Styrofoam cereal bowl, capsule coffees and individual boxed cereals and individual milk (they would save so much money and trash to have cereal and milk dispensers!). read more

We checked into Castle Mokihana on Tuesday, 4/17/18. The room is nice enough, but the service and the staff. Where do I begin. First of all, the pool is out of service. Nowhere on their website does it say that the pool is out of commission, just that the hotel is under "revitalization project". How much more does it take to say that the pool is also out? The Hawaiian coffee and coffeemaker means that you are given two packs of the coffee and there is NO MORE each day when the house keeping comes. What is the point of having a coffee maker when you are not given any coffee packet each day? We also read in the guest amenities that shampoo etc is included, so we didn't bring our own. Well, if you use up the little bottles that are in the room, you are NOT GIVEN ANY MORE, as that is all you get, per the not so nice lady (Lauren) at the front desk. We also left a little bits of the straw wrapper on the floor, and thinking house keeping would vacuum, NOT TRUE. Lauren says house keeping does not vacuum regularly, ONLY once a week, or you can pay extra. WHO has ever heard of paying over two hundred dollars per night for a hotel and no housekeeping to speak of, other than towels and making the bed??? The first morning we had breakfast, the coffee ran out. Now it is advertised that there is continental breakfast. We waited and waited, and finally asked for coffee packets to make it in our room (this is before we found out the no more coffee packet rule of the hotel), and Lauren said, No, that would be a dollar a packet. Well, if you don't have coffee, the most fundamental of all continental breakfast, how about letting the guests make their own? I just can't believe how this hotel is run. DO NOT stay here, the service is nonexistence and the staff rude. I have been trying to get a hold of the General Manager Ala, but she cannot take phone calls, only in person conversations, and we were out each day before she came in and have not been back before she left for the day. Lauren says she arrives about 8 30 and is probably gone by 1 30. Of all the years I have stayed at hotels, I have NEVER been to a hotel in which the room had a coffee maker, but the coffee is not restocked each day. I am midway through a seven-night stay at The ISO. After reading the negative reviews, I had prepared for the worst. However, my stay has been fantastic. I have a clean room with air conditioning and water supply with adequate pressure and heat. What's more, I am next to the beach and there is a convenient five-mile pedestrian path that gives me easy access to a number of restaurants and additional beaches. As some reviewers note, there is no phone, iron, in-room service or daily cleaning - and the furnishings and decor are a bit dated/worn. We all have different travel needs, and those are things that are not important to me when I travel as I am usually out and about soaking up the culture. I have not tried the breakfast as I check out local spots for coffee and breakfast. (I LOVE Java Kai and Pono Market.) However, the comments on in-room coffee (i.e., that it is not automatically replenished each day) are correct. In my opinion, the overall value cannot be beaten. I travel a lot and have been to Hawaii (including Kauai) several times, and it is definitely a more expensive travel destination. From the room to the staff, who have all been very nice so far, The ISO has met my expectations since the experience is consistent with the research I did in advance. That is why It received a 5 star rating. (Sure, I could have had fancier digs with more amenities at a higher price point, but I like to put my coins to other use on vacation.) read more

Descent place and the staff is extremely friendly. There is no air conditioning or exhaust in the bathrooms. It get pretty windy so they rely on the breeze to cool your rooms. It's not as uncomfortable as you might think. My wife and I only stayed one night and enjoyed our stay. read more

We chose this place because it was cheaper than a lot of other places and really enjoyed it more than we thought we would based on the reviews from other people. We were on the first floor which opened onto a lovely grassy area overlooking the ocean. (Doesn't get better!) The room has yoga mats in it and free sunrise yoga which was fantastic. The restaurant here plays live music at night which was nice to hear (didn't eat here but seemed like a lovely happening place overlooking the ocean). We were able to walk to the restaurants we loved (JO2 was our favorite by far!!!!). The hotel has included continental breakfast which was a nice treat. We came here from the Maui Hyatt and honestly loved this better for its quaintness and relaxing vibe. Would stay here again. read more

I booked a room for 2 nights, in March 2021, at $184.69. When we checked in, the matron at the desk accused me of booking as a local, but I think when I booked the AAA rate, more than a year before, during the pandemic, the price was 175/night. The matron wanted to charge me $330 for our second night, and when I was aghast at the doubled price, she said she could get me the AAA rate of $275! So, that is what we ended up paying our second night! I have since heard from other hotels, that you never charge more than what the charge was on booking! Plus, our room was right over the Bull Shed Restaurant, which always smelled like burning beef fat. The bathroom door hinge was broken, so always slammed shut. The "grab and go" breakfast consisted of small Yoplaits, apples, and granola bars, not even any coffee or juice. We had a "grab and go" at a Best Western for half the price and had fruit salad, waffles, breakfast burritos, breads with butter and jams, cereals. For the $330 you pay for a room over a restaurant, with no breakfast, this place is definitely not worth it! read more
