Yes, Izakaya just keeps getting better. After the remodel, it seemed like the kids were in charge. They updated the menu added so many new creations such as the diamond roll which my husband actually had requested it be made for him for the last 10 years and I was requested that it be named after him. The daddy roll is really something to behold with the lobster tail shell included in its beautiful presentation. The boomerang is also a super tasty roll that is a very rich crab bomb of flavor appetizer to be shared. Pro tip: if you want to sit in a booth, you might want to bring your own cushion. The wood seats is very hard and while they said they had cushions on order, it's been well over a year and there's still no cushions. read more

I've always wanted to try Izakaya, and finally I did! Cute little restaurant with plenty of tables and booths. We all ordered the lunch bento box. I chose the chicken teriyaki and mixed tempura for my two choices, and it was accompanied with rice, salad, two pieces of California roll and miso soup. The miso soup was quite bland, with about 3 little cubes of tofu, and tasted watered down because it didn't really have any flavor. The chicken was very good, with teriyaki sauce with the perfect flavor and thickness. The salad was very good too, because of the salad dressing. I couldn't really judge the California roll because it was so thin that it broke apart. I couldn't wait for the tempura, one of my favorites, but the batter was pretty thick and kinda greasy, so it was just okay. I'm glad I finally got to try it, and will be back. But I'd probably skip the tempura next time. It was a bit heavy for me. There was plenty of parking available, which was great, because we were there during the peak of lunchtime. read more

I got a fired certificate for Xmas for this place and decided to try it. I remember this place being the old Skippers on Freeport that closed down so glad to see it was being used for something good. As I walk in I notice the place is clean and very private. In the middle is chairs and table but on the sides are booths. I option for the booth. Very comfortable. I ended up getting house spicy Ramen and a roll. Both were very tasty. I'm not sure of the name of the roll o got but it had a slight citrus taste to it which tasted really good. The ramen had a good broth to it that I wash down with a Kirin Ichiban Beer. The service was nice and welcoming the whole time. Gotta go back for lunch some time. read more

I've been coming to Izakaya for so long back when there was a happy hour menu and it was the spot to go to. Since then the place has made some changes and it looks great! I stopped here for lunch and grabbed a sushi and hand roll and that was plenty. Great service as usual. I did notice the rice that is used for the sushi was stickier than use to having. And it may be that's how the sushi rice is here. I'll have to come check out the dinner menu and see if that has changed to since I've last been here. read more

Adj: adequate but not awesome The Izakaya on Freeport is a long time establishment in the South Land Park area. We've been coming here for many years. Looks like I had pictures from years ago, but totally forgot to write a review! Before the pandemic, we were coming almost every week for an early dinner after work during their happy hour (the menu prices of which were incredible for the amount and quality of food) with my in laws. We usually ordered the IZ roll (so good), the double salmon roll (my fav), a couple of spider rolls, a couple of California rolls for the kiddos, and a few bowls of house ramen. Post COVID, we all kind of forgot and basically didn't get back into coming here and ended doing a lot more takeout. They've since done a major remodel of the interior of the restaurant and it looks nice. There are several booths along one side of the restaurant that provide a more cozy and private dining experience for small groups. Then the middle are bigger tables for families and larger groups. Finally, along the other sides there are smaller tables for couples, trios, and smaller parties. There's also dining at the bar now which they didn't have before. Service was efficient but not particularly attentive, but they were pretty busy. As for the food, everything was pretty good. I really enjoyed my bento box and the freshness was clear in every item, the tempura was really crisp and spot on, not too thick, but still substantial to give it the both mouthfeel. However, everyone else's order of ramen, which I got to try family style, was super duper salty. It was really quite bad bc it was so salty that any flavor of the broth was completely overwhelmed by the saltiness. It was so bad that I think back now and we should've sent them back, but instead I think my in laws just didn't drink the broth and my hubby just added hot water to his broth. Other than that, the sushi rolls were pretty good, so it really was the ramen that disappointed which is so weird because years ago their ramen was consistently good (but not great, you have to go somewhere higher end and more specialized for that) and never overly salty. Overall, we thought The Izakaya's new look and vibes were good and the food was still adequate but not awesome. It's not bad for casual dining, so we'll likely be back because it's a convenient location and easy access for our elders. read more

I did not expect this place to be as good as it was. Izakaya had some really tasty bentos and hand roll. The location is situated amongst a row of great Asian cuisine . The service was kind to our large group, and brought our food out in timely fashion. The salmon was small looking but it was very good. They have some really good sauce there, and sauce makes it everything. I also had a spicy scallop hand roll, which was delicious! Not beating my favorite hand roll location but definitely delish. Yum! We came in and celebrated our anniversary with our family. There was plenty of seating, and it was pretty busy. We loved the decor and lighting around the restaurant. The employees were professional and our food came out fast. We over ordered as per usual! My husband got a dinner bento box with chicken teriyaki (the meat was too chewy) and mixed tempura. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted and shortly after we were taken to our booth. The booth is wooden, but not uncomfortable. We were served sunomono and cucumber lemon water while looking over the menu. The interior is smaller with booths lining the walls and tables in the middle. While we were there, they had two large parties that they had arranged the tables in the middle for. The decor was nice and really gave it a good vibe. Everyone was friendly and patient. We got the Buta Gyoza, Beef Donburri, Crystal Salmon nigiri and a double hamachi roll. The crystal salmon was my favorite. It was lightly torched, deliciously seasoned and just melted in my mouth. Highly recommend that. The food was good and we enjoyed every bite. They do have decent amounts of parking on the side of the building and in the back lot. Let me start by saying this review is based off a DoorDash order. I was feeling under the weather at work and wanted something warm so ramen was my pick for lunch. The Izakaya was my choice since it was close to my job and figured it would arrive still warm. I opted for the house special ramen which was pretty basic but still sounded tasty. It came with a boiled egg, spinach, mushrooms, corn, fish cake and noodles in a chicken broth. Unfortunately they did not send my order with any utensils, but luckily my job has a kitchen so crisis averted. Overall the ramen on its own was super lackluster with minimal flavor. The pork was extremely fatty and not appetizing. I added some gochujang paste, soy sauce and Bachan to help liven it up a bit. Overall I wasn't too impressed with the ramen but looking at the reviews it seems their sushi is decent so I'll give them another try when the craving of sushi hits again. read more

The Izakaya is always a treat. The food here is super tasty. I really love their curries -- they are always so good. Their new calamari tastes really good and is different from the usual round ones. this has been a family favorite for the past 10 ish years and it's something cozy and has great comfort food, but i think the quality just isn't as good as before. the dishes here at izakaya are not really too typical of a normal japanese restaurant. I got the beef udon and was expecting it to be more sukiyaki style beef. The flavor and depth also just wasn't there and I think it's incredibly subpar for a $15 udon dish. The ramen here also isn't the best quality, as their house ramen and other bowls aren't really tonkatsu broth. It was also lacking in flavor. Their eggs also usually aren't marinated soy eggs, it's simply just a hard boiled egg. Again, not a standard or quality bowl of ramen for the $17 price tag. You can get better and more quality ramen for the same price. I do like the sushi rolls here. Favs are IZ roll, dragon roll, and the pocket roll. We walked in at 8:31 PM, and the restaurant is listed as open until 9:00 PM. We were told that dine-in was closed and only takeout was available, despite the fact that five tables were actively seated and eating. Telling customers that dining is closed while others are clearly being served is confusing and frustrating. If dine-in actually closes earlier, that should be clearly stated. Otherwise, it feels like customers are being turned away simply because staff wants to close early. We came in genuinely excited to try The Izakaya, ready to spend money and enjoy a meal. Unfortunately, this experience completely turned us off. A business open until 9 should honor that time, not shut down service early. If you've ever wondered what it's like to eat a sushi roll the size of a small automobile, look no further. I ordered the Titanic Roll, and let me tell you, this thing didn't just hit the iceberg, it was the iceberg. I needed a blueprint and a team of engineers just to figure out how to take the first bite. It is one of those days where I am craving some nice cold Sapporo on draft with a nice cold mug. Yes it is still on happy hour until 530 on weekdays. Its 3.50. Its light and fresh and quench the thirst. . Cold sake for 3.50 during happy hour as well. The cold sake was surprisingly smooth and a little sweet. It was easy to drink and it was good. . Had the chirashi which was affordable for 17.95. But it was made with no love. The presentation was missing some wow factor and garnish. It was meh and plain presentation. It didn't give me the wow factor when place down on the table. The fish was fresh however there was a couple pieces of the fish at the end piece which didn't look good to be presented. I don't think I will order this again. . Overall the service is always great here. I like their house spicy ramen which is a good portion and has so much veggies and i love it. Can you believe that this place has been here for so long? I recently visited Izakaya and enjoyed it very much. The staff is very friendly and I walked into the door and was attentive when we were seated. The food came out reasonably fast and was fresh. The way it looked and decorated was very enticing and I could not wait to dig in. I enjoyed the presentation of it all. I found the prices here were reasonable relative to the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Some of the prices were higher than some other places but the quality makes up for it. Additionally, the service is awesome. I would recommend coming here to have an exceptional sushi experience with the staff. Definitely, I was not disappointed.
