Best hotel stay ever! Every touch at The Jefferson is elegant and hospitable, from the friendly and helpful staff to the beautiful decor. The service is impeccable - staff members went out of their way to offer recommendations and history about the hotel. One of my favorite features is the beautiful library that is open all day. They have a coffee bar set up in the morning and you can also get bar service. In the evening, they had a warm fire on. All of the books are available for reading or to take to your room. The room itself was lovely. Pretty comfortable bed and good amenities. I'm a big fan of the water carafes in the room and the TV in the bathroom vanity! They also have 2 peloton bikes in the fitness room (so fun to try!) and reciprocity at the University Club, which has a bigger gym. Overall, fabulous stay and can't wait to return! read more

Utterly shocked this hotel enjoys the reputation it has. Accidents happen. I get it. But after booking a premiere king for nearly $700, I checked into The Jefferson and found I'd been downgraded, sans price adjustment, to an extremely small room with a full bed. At first, they tried to tell me I had booked the wrong room, but then after showing them my reservation, they admitted they had made the mistake. Unfortunately, they were sold out and couldn't offer me the room I had originally reserved. Fine. But here's where I was shocked. There was little attempt to make it right, beyond an offer of a comped breakfast. It was clear two people could not fit in that bed. And yet, I was left to find another room elsewhere. I ended up having dinner that night at the Park Hyatt. They were also sold out, but their concierge called three different hotels for me and even negotiated a reduced rate at another property. And I wasn't even a guest there! That is the level of attentiveness and service I would have expected from The Jefferson. If they had worked harder to make it right, I would have chalked this up to my own bad luck. But everyone seemed apathetic...from the doorman to the concierge to the manager. It was clear the manager was embarrassed by the mistake, but that didn't translate into trying to make things right. No one was hustling, no one seemed to care. Was really looking forward to my stay at The Jefferson, but I will absolutely never visit there again. read more

I don't know how I could give the Jefferson any less than 5 stars. My boyfriend took me here 2 days ago after a bike ride and marriage proposal under the cherry blossoms. Then he surprised me with a suite at the Jefferson. They were amazing! Everyone at the hotel congratulated us whenever we showed our faces; they had a beautiful card in our room. They even had my car ready with fresh coffee at 4:15 am so I could go to work. I know, I should have called in sick. The room was gorgeous and the tub was amazing. I tend to agree with Reggie G that it's hard to give this hotel anything less than 5 stars. While we had somewhat of a roller coaster ride here about a month back, they really did go out of their way to please and satisfy their guests, and it is nothing less than an exceptional place to stay. I was in DC for business -- two nights worth anyway, and with that taken care of and the hubby never having visited the city, he flew out the second night to join me and then stay through the weekend. I should say too that had we not been on the special group/work rate arranged through the third party with whom I was working, I never would have been able to afford the usual nightly rate, let alone what it would have cost to stay there on my dime through the weekend. This is so not the Radisson. Anyway, the first night I stayed in a very nicely appointed room, but most unfortunately found myself too close to the elevator, which makes that ridiculously loud "BONG! BONG BONG!" sound whenever it stops on the floor. Yeah. That was only being tolerated one night. Next night we were moved to another room, this time it was much smaller than the first room, and it was set up for a disabled person. Now disabled persons need a decent place to stay too, but to someone who does not require such accoutrement, it was disconcerting to be staying in a luxury hotel with a shower seat, lowered vanity heights and a shower curtain (especially since I knew how well-appointed the other room had been.) Now the third and fourth nights, they really did us up good, by upgrading us most graciously to a suite on the second floor. Fantastically decorated, with razor-sharp attention to every detail -- it was lovely and wonderful and over the top and we had a marvelous weekend lounging around a bit after long walks to the National Mall + a fantastic breakfast from room service on our last day there. So! Despite all the back and forth and the misfortune of having to change rooms (twice!) it really did all work out in the end, and it was a fantastic experience. Oh my. My friend and I had a particularly good night (post Yelp-elite party) and felt like having a swanky drink, so of course we head to the Jefferson. I had never been before, and being from Oakland, having drinks in a hotel bar doesn't cross my mind but here in DC that (apparently) is where all the dirt goes down. Other than feeling slightly out of place, I put on my invisible suit of superiority and walked in to a Great-Gatsby-feeling, marble walled, velvet chair lined lounge. We opted for the bartender special, allowing them to work their magic and surprise us with a drink. Mine, I wasn't in love with (the $15 doesn't help me love it either) Bourbon, citrus, and maraschino. I much preferred my friend's drink-gin, black pepper, and cucumber liquor. 2 drinks + always full water +salted nuts and olives + piano bar + great people watching= $35 and a good time. If you ever have a good night and someone offers to pay, or you simply want to feel like old money, come to the Jefferson. read more

It's all about service. And with that in mind, The Jefferson hits all the right notes. Incredibly clean, well-staffed, and beautifully designed, this hotel and the Greenhouse on its bottom floor took my breath away. Only got breakfast while I was here, and it was de-lec-ta-ble. A friend of mine and I just feasted on a pleasant Tuesday morning. We got seated in this nice mid room with a skylight that only had one table so we had total privacy - bonus points for that! He got the Steak and eggs with a side of mushrooms and I got the three-egg omelet with onions, spinach, and tomatoes with a side of home fries and croissants. I literally might not have had a better croissant since I was in Paris. Crispy, delicate, and perfect with the scrumptious jam they provide with it. Really made my meal. The potatoes were crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and my omelet tasted like the ingredients had just come out of the garden. I also splurged with some excellent grapefruit juice and topped it all off with a breakfast finishing cappucino (also, of course, very well-made) before heading off to work! The service was quick to our beckon and correct in all regards with our orders. I am a big fan and would love to return to this fine establishment. read more

This was our first time staying in DC and The Jefferson helped make it the best visit! After a long travel day, having been delayed over 4+ hours and lost luggage, we just wanted to get to the hotel and have the day be over. With that said, we checked in around 8pm on Friday 2/20. Research told us that, by booking through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts, we would be given certain amenities, which were the following: -Upgrade (depending on availability at time of check-in): booked into a Premium Room and were upgraded at check-in into the Deluxe. This was expected, however, based on the website, it appears we received the smallest Deluxe King without the features of the Deluxe Room they show online (room #800). It seemed only slightly larger than the Premium. We also had no storage aside from the tiniest drawers next to the mini-bar. Aside from that, the rooms are amazing and beautiful with an amazing bathroom. It was a very classy hotel. -Free breakfast every morning: to redeem the ~$61 breakfast credit, you can ONLY use it in the Greenhouse Restaurant. You cannot use it for room service. Each breakfast we ate was delicious! There was nothing bad on the menu. Be mindful though that you do have to specifically ask for the bill, otherwise the staff won't bring it to you. Pros: -Amazingly beautiful hotel and rooms. (see photos) -EXCELLENT location; only 0.4 miles from the White House & Metro! (Farragut North) -Helpful staff (shout-out to Karen) -Free coffee by elevators throughout morning then switched to tea -Delicious food (both room service and restaurants) -Free Internet/Printing -Free water in rooms Cons: (very minute) -Doorman placed us into a $25 minimum Uber car to go 1.8 miles, after we asked for a taxi -FHR free breakfast can only be redeemed at the Greenhouse Restaurant and not room service -No storage in rooms Like I said, the cons are so minute but they're just things to know if you decide to stay here (especially the Uber ordeal), which I believe you should. Elegant. Regal. Flawless. How many synonyms can I use here? So, you might have read my review of Plume, which stands, in my estimation as the best restaurant in D.C. Well, brace yourself.... the hotel where the restaurant is housed packs an equally charged delivery. The Jefferson is the sleeper star of the District. Classy... yet also Kick Ass. We're not talking flash in the pan decor like the W nor are we chatting about resting on our pedigreed laurels like the Mayflower. This is a legitimate sensory treat. There is no line for reception; you are escorted to a desk and seated with an attendant who takes you through the check in process. My husband booked a suite for my birthday. Opulent begins the description. Two immaculately appointed rooms and a bath. Tim also arranged an incredible private party... which began in the Book Room with champagne and appetizers.... Tuna tartare (exquisite), vichisoise (divine) goat cheese beignets ( incredible). We moved to the wine cellar for dinner - seated for 20. How they served so many perfectly cooked tenderloins is beyond me but they did. The sommelier was magnificent, each wine better than the last. Amazing. Fulfilling. Traveled to this location in December 2017 and had a lovely stay. This is a very fine hotel, with super attentive staff who are truly there to help you have the best stay! The rooms were very nice and spacious, great linens in both the bathroom and the bedroom. Nicely appointed, my only complaint is that I wish the bathroom had heated floors! But they give you nice slippers. Our bathroom had a lovely tub and shower as well. Both the bar and the restaurant here are very nice as well. Completely recommend! read more

Absolutely recommend staying at the Jefferson. Everything from the location to the amenities was perfect for a weekend visit for a couple of tourists. The hotel is maybe a 10 minute drive from Reagan Nat'l, a 10 minute walk to the White House, and a 15 min walk to the National Mall. From the moment we arrived, the service at the Jefferson made us feel welcome and took care of everything. They even sent up a complimentary bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries when they heard it was our anniversary! The rooms can be a little tight on space but are very well appointed, and the beds are super comfortable. The TV behind the bathroom mirror is a nice touch. The charming historic decor in the lobby and throughout the building is a constant reminder of where you are and the people who once wheeled and dealed (dealt?) here. The on-site pub serves up great local beers on tap, as well as craft cocktails. The Greenhouse restaurant has AMAZING breakfast/brunch in the most charming French country garden setting. It is a little pricey but the atmosphere will transport you to another place and time. In short, I'd HIGHLY recommend The Jefferson for a slightly splurgy stay in downtown DC. read more

I stayed here for 4 nights in 2012 on my own. It is a pricey hotel, but since my flight was on points I decided to splurge on the accommodation. I am definitely not wealthy or famous in any way, but the staff here treated me like I was. The room itself was small, but has a large closet and enormous bathroom with insane water pressure. which was good, as I needed to shower about three times a day to wash off the sweat that resulted from walking around the DC heat all day. (so yeah, the iced tea station in the lobby was one of my favourite things!) President Obama also had a private fundraising event while I stayed here. I've never seen anything like it - it felt like I was in a movie with the helicopters, motorcade, rifles, press, security, secret service... The dinner was held in a room that has a window one could theoretically peek through from near the elevator, but needless to say a well-placed secret service agent prevented that from happening! Location-wise I also felt that this hotel was great, felt close to both the big sites and neighbourhoods, without being right in the middle of a touristy area. Only minor complaint (which reduces to 4 stars) was the housekeeping, they were having an off couple of days when I there were some awkward moments trying to time the service. But when I asked for extra bottles of the house-filtered-and-bottled water, she left two fresh ones for each remaining day of my stay, without me having to ask again. I highly recommend the hotel and will stay there again if I ever go back to DC. read more

This is a review for the hotel bar. I visited with a friend when I was in town, and the place seems to be very popular with people who work odd hours, such as journalists (which is what we are). The bar is small, but dark and cozy and with a great atmosphere. The cocktail list is on the small side, but what they make, they make well. I had a Blueberry Hill that was fab. One of us had a late dinner, a basic cheeseburger and fries that were well presented and a good portion for the price. I enjoyed a delicious slice of chocolate cheesecake garnished with mandarin orange slices and a caramel mousse/pudding. The peanuts and olives were also welcome. If you're looking for a relaxing late-evening snack and/or cocktail, this is a great place. read more

I love this place for the Quill bar. You walk in and it's all wood and velvet chairs with pillows. At 9pm on the weekends they have a piano man come in and sing most of the lyrics to the songs you love to sing along to. The bar is orange and lit up from behind putting a soft glow into the room. The service is excellent but not overbearing, the drinks are well-made and interesting (I had the Fall Flavors cocktail with whiskey and figs and the Waldorf which had absinth.) It's marvelous and makes you feel like you are in a film noir movie. read more

We had Sunday brunch at the Greenhouse Lounge of the Jefferson Hotel yesterday. First, the staff is very accommodating. I didn't know that they offer free valet parking on Saturday and Sunday for brunch attendees. That's a very nice value that most hotels don't offer. Second, brunch was very nice. Most entrees are in the 20-25 range. We had the eggs benedict and salads. The eggs were slightly overcooked, but not too bad. The ham was a virginia ham, which means it's a bit too salty. The asparagus was a bit overcooked. So the food isn't perfect for a standard brunch item, but I'd be willing to try other options on the menu. They started with warm breads and a small banana smoothie on the house. I appreciated the bread, but the smoothie was a bit much. If they skipped it, no one would really care. We didn't opt for the bloody mary or mimosa. They tried to upsel us that, and they did look inviting, but that would be an extra $10 per drink, and we don't have an unlimited budget. Go for it if you want to splurge, though. Third, the ambiance is just perfect. The chairs are so comfortable -- I've never really had restaurants chairs as nice as these! The entire place is very quiet -- they don't even pipe in any music, which I really appreciate. Since this was a business brunch, we needed to be able to talk without shouting. Fourth, service was very good. Other commentators say "calm gracious service" and that' is 100% true. No rushing around, no hovering around asking us if everything is okay. Yet, they always had a person quietly to ask for things. We stayed almost three hours, and they were nice enough to leave us alone. read more

This is a really nice hotel in Washington DC with 24x7 room service and attentive workers. The beds are very comfortable and the walls have good solid noise insulation. I was surprised with a staycation here on Valentine's day. When we arrived, I was also surprised the hotels didn't do anything special for Valentine's Day. Apparently, my boyfriend secretly packed our luggage the day before, and dropped it off here. Apparently, they had even put our luggage in our room already before we arrived, that was nice touch. + 1 for The Jefferson There is a intimate check-in process where you sit at a small desk with the concierge to get your keys. We had the classic room. The room was small and cozy. We didn't have a view of anything, I think it was another wall, which was fine. The interior made up for it. I love the elegant dark wood furniture and oversized bed, beautiful desk, awesome valet stand where you can hang your suit jackets (I want one!), the bed was comfy, the bose classical music default radio station was nice, there was a small flatscreen tv. The best part was probably the bathroom. I loved the rainfall shower head, the oversized tub with pillow and tub caddy AND a huge glass bowl of bath salts. It was the first time I ever seen a TV within a mirror too. So I really enjoyed the bathroom. The toilet was in its own separate room. In a way, the feel reminds me of the Palazzo Hotel in Las Vegas, but definitely much smaller/more boutique/cozy. Nothing flashy/grand here. Just simple quiet elegance in the heart of the city. If we had more time, I definitely would have had dined in their Greenhouse for brunch and the attached Plume restaurant for dinner. However, we did visit the gym, which was super tiny and cramped, windowless. You pretty much go there just to use their treadmill because there is no space to do anything else. I did appreciate the free water bottles & apples in the gym though. :) read more

Stayed at the Jefferson while visiting DC for a conference. The hotels near our venue were booked, so we had to go a little further afield than would have been preferred. We arrived on Mother's Day and the hotel had a fancy Mother's Day brunch in full swing. Coming in late in the afternoon, we were the last seating, but couldn't say that justified the wait to secure even a glass of water after being seated for almost 25 minutes. This slow service was so noticeable that the couple next to us assured us that the wait staff took 20 minutes to get to them too. While the brunch spread was nice, it was extremely expensive and the sub par service diminished the awe factor which the experience truly deserved. Unfortunately, the poor service was repeated again as we arrived for breakfast the next day only to find ourselves shuttled between 2 restaurants like hot potatoes as 2 sets of wait staff determined exactly how many minutes were left before they closed...well, you get the picture, it was disappointing to see this kind of hopeless miss in a hotel which should be a bastion of hospitality. To her credit, the maitre'd recognized that the perception was problematic when she saw us reappear after being bounced back to her, but the damage had already been done. I noticed that several posts on Yelp have pointed out the small rooms. We were initially placed in one that made me feel claustrophobic. The situation was rectified when we contacted the front desk. The room we were moved to was much larger. Additional pros-- the room service was incredibly prompt and professional. And the front desk staff and valets were also great to work with. The entire experience would likely have been at least a 4 or more if the restaurant experience on two distinct occasions had not been so badly bungled up. read more

I bought a relatively expensive $510 gift certificate as a wedding present on May 4th that covered a 30 minute foot reflexology, a 60 minute couples massage, as well as 20% tip at the Petite Spa. Instead of it being a relaxing experience it was a very stressful experience for them and embarrassing for me. The couple went in this Saturday (may 20) for their treatment where they were told the gift card had no value and made them sit around for 20 minutes while they figured this out and finally took them for their treatment. My friend had given them my name and number when they first had an issue with the certificate but I was not called till after the treatment. I was called by an extremely polite lady, Frandal, from the spa at around 11:30 am I was told that told there had been an issue with the gift card but now everything had been taken care of and my friends were enjoying complementary food and refreshments for the hassle after their massage and they did not call me immediately as they wanted to first make sure the guests had a first class experience. She took my credit card info again. I called my friends but got their voice mail I got a call from another lady at the Jefferson at 1:47 pm on the 20th whose name I forget but she said she was the earlier lady's boss. This lady was condescending and talked down to me that the matter was cleared and that they discovered that my credit card had been originally charged and also my guests got the treatment they booked. When my friends called me back on Sunday (5/21) they were reluctant to tell me but this is what they experienced 1. Made to sit for 20 minutes and made to feel like they did something wrong and they gave the hotel employees my contact info but no one called me to to verify the purchase - which was all done by email: they had me fill out a credit card authorization form and email it along with a copy of my credit card. 2. The spa staff skipped the reflexology - which was probably $100-$150 off the $510 as that time had passed figuring things out internally 3. They were taking them to separate rooms despite having booked a couples massage. The couple pointed it out. The staff fussed at that and said they were not setup but will try and do it for them (sounded like a favor) and then took them for a couples massage and rushed them through to start the service as they had another appointment following. 4. After the stressful spa experience and being rushed through it - they asked to shower after but told unfortunately they could not. 5. They went and paid for their own brunch - which was ok but I had been told they were eating complementary food 5. They kept the gift card for $510 even though they probably only used $350 approx of the $510 This was a surprisingly bad experience at one of DC's finest hotels. read more

This review is in regards to the afternoon tea. I would have given the tea a 4-5 star rating if the food was better. The Good: Amazing space, well appointed setting and impeccable service. The Okay: Small selection of teas, but very nice teas offered. The Bad: selection and quality of food. No food menu (only tea selection) for afternoon tea posted on their website. I have been to over 20 afternoon teas around the country for the past 10 years. This is one of the prettiest and most formal surroundings I've been too. The Jefferson Hotel is stunningly beautiful and formally decorated. The courtyard where the tea is held is no exception. It's a very quiet and elegant setting. Definitely not a place to bring young children (a plus for couples and people that prefer a child-free atmosphere like myself). Service by the staff was gracious and impeccable. No complaints there at all. We also attended tea on a Sunday, so valet was free. Also a plus. The tea selection was small compared to other teas, but the three teas that were chosen by the table were great (Assam, Equilibrium and Herb Ginger). All teas were served loose. The tea strainer with attached swing-style drip bowl was very cute (I have never seen that specific type used before at a tea house). Now we come to the food. There was only one exception to my negative comments about the meal: the scones. The scones were very good, about the size of a medium sized apple, piping hot when they came to the table and served with clotted cream, peach jam or cranberry jam. The cranberry jam was also very yummy. However...The sandwiches however were stale! The bread from all four selections was completely dried out. It tasted like they had been made earlier that day and left to dry out on a counter for hours. The ingredients themselves were okay...But the fact that we had reservations and were served food that was so poorly preserved was very upsetting (especially concerning the price $39-$55). The dessert selections were okay. The raspberry cookie was decent and the strawberry shortcake was okay. Neither was anything exceptional or different; I could have picked up both at a local bakery. The plain pound cake and chocolate-peanut butter loaf were also dried out and stale like the sandwiches and were practically inedible. I had a bite of both and pushed them aside. Very disappointed since the desserts tend to be the highlight of an afternoon tea and where a tea venue has a chance to shine and set themselves apart from their competition. As I said, if the food had been decent and as good as some of the teas I've been to in the past (The Phoenician in Scottsdale, AZ has an amazing menu) this rating would have been much higher. If the Jefferson DC changes there food menu I will be back. If it remains the same, I will not return and encourage others to check out Reynold's Tavern in Annapolis or The Mandarin Oriental DC for their afternoon teas. read more

I was utterly disturbed and dissatisfied by the lack of customer service shown by the waiting staff at The Greenhouse. We were seated for approximately 15 minutes before anybody came over and offered us a refreshment. I've honestly had better waiting service at Friday's. I know that there are multiple five-star reviews of this hotel my experience there was a total disaster I spent four days in a $1000 a night suite of those four days only two days was the room serviced by housekeeping. We had a unique situation in that and my girlfriend had recently had knee surgery and so was able to walk for about two hours at a time then we had to come back to the room and ice down her knee and then we could go out again. The first time we requested ice which of course comes from room service they brought a very small amount. I requested a larger amount which was necessary to properly do the procedure I am an orthopedic surgeon so have a pretty good idea of what I am doing. The next day the same small amount of ice was brought I again asked after giving a five dollar tip to please bring a larger amount of ice. Almost 2 hours later no ice had showed up I called the manager on duty and the ice was finally brought. I could spend another thousand words on little things that went wrong that you might expect at a Holiday Inn but not any five-star hotel. Washington has many luxury hotels I suggest you choose one of the others although the location of this hotel is excellent but the service is abysmal and there were no apologies there was no adjustments to the bill and I will certainly never return there read more

Loved this place. We indulged ourselves for a special two nights. The hotel staff were very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. The room was clean and comfortable and quiet. We had dinner at the Plume (another special treat for our Christmas) - delicious! Not an inexpensive indulgence but we knew that going in. It was worth it! Went to the Jefferson for tea with 3 other lady friends and had a blast! Enjoyed their assortment of tea sandwiches and pastries. More pastry offerings than sandwiches would be my only complaint. However, they did a really nice thing: when we/I asked for a couple more tea sandwiches, they said they could put together an extra plate for an additional fee, which we passed, but they gave us a complimentary tray regardless! Little things, people, that makes the experience spectacular. read more

I have been to Plume for dinner four times and to The Greenhouse for lunch about three times. With each visit, the experience at The Jefferson becomes more wonderful. The Jefferson is one of the few places remaining in this modern day that can offer a sophisticated, elegant, and decadent dining experience while providing warm, attentive, and professional service. There is not one ounce of snootiness among any of those who work here, so you feel utterly relaxed despite the formality of the experience. The menus for both lunch and dinner provide a variety of dishes to select from, as well as the option of a tasting menu (for dinner). The appetizers and entrees are absolutely fantastic: Incredible flavors, textures, and ingredients; beautiful presentations; and perfect portion sizes. Whether it's the chicken sandwich for lunch, the foie gras for an appetizer, or the assiette of pork for dinner, it's all done superbly well. If you have a special occasion to celebrate, or if you simply would like to have a drink at the bar, Quill, a soothingly lovely location perfectly positioned within the hotel, it would be well worth going to The Jefferson. You will be promised a memorable evening and will feel well justified for having spent the time and money. read more

I stay here all the time but service is eroding. I'm barely in my room and someone hits the bell and walks in whole I am still in the bathroom, then keeps on going and talking to me! Per- arrival email to the spa, no answer, follow up email no answer (oh well they just lost $500). Checking in room will be ready in 10 mi s, 45 mins later.... On a prior visit, left a message for the concierge to help with a request, but never heard back. I have always liked this place but lately the service does not match the price. I recommend the Four Seasons, Ritz or Fairmont. read more
