It's been a minute since my last visit to Carmen's, and I'm happy to report that this cozy little…read morespot is still just as clean and the staff just as welcoming as I remembered. Since it was Taco Tuesday, I decided to mix and match a few items: The Puffy Tacos: Carmen's is famous for these, and they were incredibly tasty. If I'm being entirely honest, I remember them being just a little bit puffier on my last visit--but hey, that could easily be a figment of my imagination! Either way, the crispy beef flavor hit the spot. The Pork Tamale: This was the absolute star of the show. It was flat-out delectable. My only regret is that I didn't order two or three more to take home. The Sides: The refried beans were standard but solid. I ended up pairing the whole plate with some fresh avocado and a generous douse of Sriracha, which brought everything together perfectly. It's great to see a local favorite keeping up the hospitality and great food. I definitely won't wait so long to come back next time--especially when those tamales are calling my name!

I've been wanting to try this place out often as I pass it often. My BIL also told it was good…read more I ordered the Carne Asada Gordita Platter. It came with two Gorditas, rice and beans. I also ordered the chips and queso. The steak was seasoned well. I give the Gordita a 9/10. The rice and beans could've had more flavor. I give both a 6/10. The chips and queso 8/10. Chips tasted homemade. The queso was really good too! Customer service was good.

Chapala is about 8 miles from where I live and I've had the opportunity to eat here multiple times…read more I've had everything from the nachos to enchiladas, Speedy Gonzalez to quesadillas, burritos, tacos, and most everything else. And I don't make multiple return visits to restaurants where I don't enjoy the food and the service. The restaurant is tucked away down what appears to be an industrial street where you wouldn't expect to find a sit-down restaurant. Because of this you won't accidentally discover it while you're out on a Saturday afternoon drive. I'm certain the location hurts their business as it has other failed restaurants that have occupied the same space in the past. But if you go to the trouble of finding it, you'll be happy you did. There are a few "Mexican" restaurants in this area of town, but this is a "Tex-Mex" restaurant, which I prefer. I won't go into describing each individual item on the menu, I'll just say the food is solid Tex-Mex. I lived in Houston and San Antonio for a total of 10 years, so I know what Tex-Mex is supposed to taste like. Chapala could definitely hold their own in South Texas. I think you should give it a try.

While many items were ok and overall portion sizes were good, it lacked seasoning, especially the quesadilla. It was simply a tortilla with an underwhelming amount of cheese. Didn't even taste like the tortilla was heated up with any butter. Very bland. The tacos we ordered were ok but the shells reminded me of that from a Taco Bell taco kit almost. Sadly a soft option or corn option was not offered to us. Even though we dined around 1230, the restaurant was empty. Only one other table was occupied with guests. The hostess was even eating while working which didn't make for a very welcoming ambiance.
