Went to The Kar Shop for the 2nd time. My son's old Highlander needed major repairs, everything seemed to go at the same time so the estimate was a lot. We took the car to another highly rated shop to get a quote and see what they said was needed. They recommended the same repairs with comparable prices but they added A new radiator which Kar Shop did not say was needed. They did excellent work on his fiancee's car so we went with Kar Shop again. Rusty took care of everything and kept in contact and updated us. Super nice guy and so great to deal with! I brought my 2017 Toyota Corolla (about 100,000 miles) to K.A.R. Shop on September 11, 2025, for a simple brake inspection and mentioned a couple of routine services the car would also soon need. However what I was given an estimate for over $5,000 of work, mostly in unneeded parts and two "preventative maintenance" packages-- representing about half the value of the car. Heres' thew breakdown: The manager claimed I needed a new air filter (which I'd replaced recently and was verified by a professional as still clean), a new battery ("sweating," and "350-360 CCA", I was told), a full suspension overhaul ($3,400 - the dealership charged $2,000 for the same service), and a radiator overhaul ($900 + which I purchased). The two latter services were described as "preventative maintenance." There were no actual leaks or breaks in either system. Toyota, along with another independent shop later confirmed those recommendations were unnecessary. The suspension was determined to be "fine" and the radiator likely needed no work given the make, model, and milage on the car, according to the dealership. When I asked the manager why his price was 60% above that of the dealership, he responded by saying he'd have to start buying his parts from them. Additionally, the battery tested at over 500 CCA at the dealership and was deemed not in need of replacement. The battery was also under warranty. The shop manager didn't ask me if this were so. He just offered to sell me a brand new one. I refused the first three service options (air filter, batter, suspension overhaul) but opted for the radiator overhaul. However, after contacting the shop manager with my complete list of complaints, including what the dealership had said about the lack of need for radiator service, the radiator service charge was refunded. (Part of the package included $45 for a new radiator cap. The dealership charged $28 for a factory replacement.) When I asked the shop manager why he thought I needed the radiator service in the first place, I was told, "Just in case your car were to break down on the highway." Toyota told me they only do work on needed repairs. They thought the preventative maintenance ploy was preposterous. I decided to report this incident because the problem with the company, as I see it, is the larger pattern of inflated and misleading recommendations which ultimately destroyed my trust in this shop. I do not want other customers to receive the same brand of predatory service recommendations that were proposed to me. Bottom line: I went in for a brake check -- which they never did (and it turns out I actually needed according to both Toyota and the other independent shop) -- and left with inflated estimates and pressure to purchase unnecessary parts and approve unnecessary work. It was an unexpectedly rainy day and as I was leaving my home, my windshield wiper tore. I went into crisis mom mode since I was driving with my young child in the car. I quickly called the car shop near my home, but no one picked up. Then I found the KAR shop on yelp who said they would be happy to help. Once I pulled into the parking lot, I realized that my young son fell asleep in the backseat. Do I try to transfer him into the stroller and wheel him into the shop or call and see if they can come out and help me while I stayed with my sleeping son in the car? I chose the latter. So I called and asked if they would be willing to come out and I would pay extra for labor and inconvenience. The owner of the shop Kris came out and happily helped me. The wiper that tore actually was a bit difficult to remove and another nice employee came out to help. I asked Kris how much the wipers were. And he said, "You're all set!!" I insisted and tried to give him $30, but he said, "That's what we do for the community. Keep your money and take your son out to dinner." I mean, WOW, I was absolutely floored and touched by the incredibly kind gesture. I would absolutely return for any car trouble in the future. I plan to pay this kind gesture forward to another human. Thank you Kris and the KAR shop for making our day and this moment will be a forever part of our memories. read more

I had prior work done on my car at another, place which is also on Gilbert, and last time I went they told me that my car was a waste of time. I showed him the paper from the dealership & he said it's in good condition & I won't have to change for another year. He said it's no use in paying for something that is still good, it would be a waste of money. I called this location at 10am asking for a quote for a Timing Belt replacement. I was informed that the owner recently implemented a no phone quote policy so that they can concentrate on the customers they currently have. I was informed they need to see the car in order to give an accurate quote. The timing belt is inside the engine, there is nothing to see. I say I'll make the appointment for later in the week. she says I'll need to drop it off and it will take a couple of hours to have someone look up on the computer how much they will charge me. This seems ridiculous and a waste of my time and theirs when I could have been told on the phone how much it is. Oddly she said she could give me a quote for an oil change which requires giving her the exact same information she needed to give me a quote for a timing belt. Year, make, model and engine size. I asked to speak with a manage or the owner but was informed he had already left for the day and would not return until tomorrow. This seems to me to be another auto repair shop ploy to get your vehicle in so they can inspect areas such as brakes, air filters and wiper blades you did not ask them to in order to up sell unasked for repairs. Once a shop has your car and you have invested multiple hours of your time some shops figure you'll have the work done instead of going through it all again. I do not have a review of any work preformed as they were not able to give a quote for service. This review is of company policy and customer service. Edit for update: Upon further research I found this entire situation could have been avoided and it could have been so much worse. The person I spoke to assured me that with her 20+ years of automotive experience required them to see the car before giving a quote for a Timing Belt. What would have been more impressive is if she had told me it was a trick question because the 2015 Kia Sorento with the 3.3 v6 does NOT have a Timing Belt. Could have been an even bigger waste of their time and mine if I had dropped my car off for hours only to be told on return that nothing was needed at al because there is no timing belt. read more

My long time mechanic just retired so I was back to the drawing board to find someone I could trust with an old Ford. After a few negative bouts with the Ford dealer I found the KAR Shop on Yelp. It's funny because I participate is almost no social media but this is why I'm all over Yelp. The Kar Shop rocks and I would have driven by that place 100 times without ever knowing it. They get the customer service and have a genuine positive aura about them. They seem proud of the shop and happy to be there which is refreshing. I was even offered a ride back home while they fix my truck. Kris explained quite a few issues to me in detail. Some of which had been previously mentioned by the Ford dealer but he walked through it and explained in common language the why and what which made it easy to understand. I'm in a technology field and I tell you it's an art to be able to "dumb things down" for people not in your line of work so they understand clearly and Kris has this gift. His prices are fair and and they guarantee their work for 3 years. They also were able to offer a discount because other work made certain jobs more accessible/easier. Our Sprinter van's coolant was leaking. These guys were able to diagnose it right away as a leaking water pump. They couldn't do the work there but recommended a local diesel shop that could. Rusty topped off the coolant for us, clearly explained what was going wrong with the pump, and even helped us with the towing company. I offered to pay for their time twice but Rusty wouldn't accept it. If that's not the sign of an honest mechanic I don't know what is. read more

I received a recommendation from my family to give this shop a try. I have an off road rig that was in need of some older seal replacements, including the rear main. It's not a small or inexpensive job and the shop committed to it on Tuesday morning and let me know they'd have it done by the end of the week. One of the reasons I brought it in was because they told me they had the availability and could start working on it right away. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday roll by and I hadn't received an update (Red flag #1) so I decided to call Thursday evening before they closed for the day. I spoke with the person manning the phones and she said she didn't have an update, but said they were on track to finish up on schedule. (Red flag #2) The next day, Friday, I still hadn't received a proactive update (Red flag #3), so I called in again. This time she said she didn't have an update because other vehicles were "giving them a hard time." (Red flag #4). At this point, it was clear my truck hadn't even made it on the rack yet. To make sure I understood the situation, I clarified by asking, "You've had my truck for 4 days and you haven't even looked at it?" Her confirmation made me decide to pick it up and take it elsewhere. #1 - don't commit to work you cannot complete #2 - provide at least SOME level of customer service with a simple phone call #3 - if you don't want the work, don't waste my time This issue has already caused one other family member to not return and I'm hoping I can convince the rest of my family, that wastes their time and money at Kar Shop, to not return. I was staying in the area for a few days and I was calling around to get an estimate of work: I already have the parts and just needed them installed, and I already have a parts warranty. I hate to give a less than stellar review for a place that has all (but not many) good reviews, having not even had any work done on my car, but spare me the lame restaurant analogies when you are also trying to make money by selling your own supplied parts. If you offered competitive pricing for the parts I prefer, that would be great. The guy I spoke with used the analogy "I have eggs and a pound of bacon in my fridge but I am not gonna bring it to Denny's." or something like that. Uh, well, using my own real-world analogy, if I go to an oil change place and bring my own oil and filter they don't add on extra charges or refuse me service (so far). (I just paid $20 at a dealership.) I get making money, but c'mon... If you're trying to make money off your customers from labor charges AND parts sales, fine. But spare me the lame analogy and just simply state that you don't work with third-party parts (even though you could order these exact same parts yourself). 2 stars because they aren't even willing to do the work, and I found other that will without the lame excuses. read more

I think this is going to be our Go-To shop for at least the vehicle I drive and my daughter's. Hopefully my husband will do the same with the car he mainly drives. My daughter's 1997 Ford Escort was having trouble getting a full tank of gas and we took it in. Turns out the part that she needs is pretty expensive, almost half the value of this old car. Josh recommended rather than waste money, to just keep the car as is regarding the gas tank filling up issue, which it only fills up to about 3/4s tank. He recommended just filling up when it gets to 1/4 tank, and also not going anywhere far, mainly staying in the metro area or near where she can fill up on gas. No long trips. She's going to have to live with this. Josh said they would not charge to take the gas tank down and figure out what was wrong. Originally he said it would cost for the time to do this, but somehow they aren't charging us this. I fully expected us to pay for this. Anyway, I so greatly appreciate them not charging because this would've been almost another $200 and as my daughter heads off to college this year, that cost is expensive getting her prepared. I really appreciate the honesty and as well as relating to the customer so much, being more than fair. So at least for two of our three vehicles, they have our business now. Hopefully my husband will be agreeable to his car being maintenanced here for non-warranty issues, where his car is still covered under warranty for things except routine maintenance. So......this review is WAY overdue. So I decided to sit down to share how I absolutely love the KAR Shop. Y'all know how shady mechanic shops can be and I'm skeptical when getting a 'recommendation' because I don't fully trust their motives. That all changed when I met Chris at the KAR Shop. They have serviced my family's cars for over 2 years now and I wouldn't even think of going anywhere else. Chris and his wife Michelle are down to earth and honest. The work they do is outstanding! They have serviced my ghetto Infiniti but I am more confident in driving it knowing Chris and team have taken care of it. I introduced my wife to the KAR Shop and now she brings her Honda Accord to them for servicing. And now my daughter Leilani takes her Toyota IM to them now that her warranty has expired at the dealer. I actually moved 7.5 miles east but refuse to go anywhere else. I feel it is my neighborly duty to endorse this wonderful car service shop. I was always a "dealer" gal. I only took my car to the dealer. At some point it just became so inconvenient and I wanted a second opinion on a noise my car was making. This shop combed over the car and found nothing (spent a great deal of time on this). They also charged me nothing. Second time, same thing. Took it in for something I was concerned about, found nothing, charged nothing. This past time I went in for regular service and a trunk fix. Great shop and people. Honest, fair prices, and they get it done in the time quoted. I have a Lincoln SUV that I had just had the entire AC system replaced by someone else. It worked for about a week and went out again. A complete disaster and they wouldn't stand behind it. Took the Lincoln to Kris and he took care of it. He even replaced the compressor on a warranty exchange. Also had the transaxles replaced which work great now. No more noises. I have been back multiple times since. No issues. read more
