I first fell in love with Kealopiko years ago at the Merrie Monarch craft fair, and ever since, this Molokaʻi-born brand has held a special place in my heart. I've lost out more times than I can count, so stepping into their charming little yellow cottages on Monsarrat Avenue felt like a dream come true. The shop is small but thoughtfully curated, with just one of each size available--so every piece feels extra special. There are a few parking spots right out front (a gift in itself on Monsarrat!), and the whole experience feels intimate and intentional. This cute little Monserrat shop is kind of hard to spot if you're speeding down Monserrat, but if you go a little slow, you'll spot the yellow house looking shop with a couple parking spots in front. I saw the reviews of others saying that the service isn't super friendly. I get it. I live with some pretty angry Hawaiians and I get that it's hard to be happy all the time living here and working in an area filled with tourists. The few times I've been here, service has been a mixed bag. But they all get the job done. They'll usually try to give you a new item (instead of the display items) if they have any in stock. I think they are card only. Ofc the most difficult thing about kealopiko is how exclusive it is. They make their clothes in small batches and hand print the material. It's good quality items and honestly less expensive than some other locally owned stores, so I like shopping here. It's just sometimes hard to get your hands on things. I'll definitely be back. I try to follow them on Instagram so that I can head to the store when they do a drop. It was definitely easier when I lived in town. read more

As much as I love their designs and commitment to the story and language behind the creation of their garments, there are a few things about this brand and their brick & mortar store that make me question my support in the future. The constant drops and hype are starting to toe the line between genuine excitement and commodification of culture via glorifying a western capitalist mindset of promoting scarcity. I understand the thinking behind slow fashion and small batch production but something about this still doesn't really sit right, here's an example: I've stood in lines for 2 drops and sadly, there is limited aloha in those lines. Sassy small kine pilau attitudes, people on their phones just look you over when you walk up, no smiles, just calculating what they can grab as fast as can and all irras. I've seen so many "hauls" flexing collections and crowing with delight at managing to get a romper that it's hard not to see this whole thing as a growing issue. The pressure to have all the right clothes and accessories is being pressed upon our younger generations in a weird way and it's not good, especially at these price points. The storefront is very nice and laid out well. There are unique items in store that aren't online which is great! They also feature books on a regular basis which is thrilling to anyone who loves to read and learn about Hawaii & Hawaiian culture. Unfortunately the overall impression from the staff is unfriendly, dismissive and even a little gatekeepy. It's like the workers are doing you a favor by letting you shop there, and they know if you don't buy it plenty of other people will so you need to suck it up and be grateful while handing them your kala. read more

I have purchased items at the Kakaako store in the past that I loved. However most recent visits to the yellow cottage on Monserrat left me feeling less than welcomed.when asking a question about a design I was corrected on the pronunciation and may I say it was not done with a smile , but with a condescending attitude. As a light skinned green eyed native hawaiian(33%) I felt so unwelcomed with sales people's attitudes. I purchased items in Hilo at Merrie Monarch popup, where there was a lot more to see and buy, but with the crowds it was too crazy! It would be nice to see more stock in the Oahu shop, as a mother, mother in law Aunty,and Tutu, I love your cool fabrics and designs as gifts. Please teach your employees good customer service. I've worked in retail for a lifetime , and to make a customer a returning client a smile is always a key factor !! One again love your fabrics!!! read more

This review is well needed. I went to the Hawaii conservation conference this past week. I was applauded by the inconsistency, discrimination, and stereotyping that was done by the staff members. I heard them telling buyers that they only "was allowed to buy 1-2 items" while many others and myself was able to buy and check out with 5+ items in our arms. Their tone of their voices, rudeness, and unprofessionalism towards these consumers was disheartening. They were extra rude to these consumers and super nice to me and others. I heard her say to them also it's because of your online status. I'm not sure what that meant but it appears that these consumers loved this brand. The consumers were wearing their brand also at the time. Stereotyping, discrimination, and prejudice was clearly displayed. These were locals also. A local company maltreating locals. I've never felt so shocked to hear a company especially a local small company not be appreciative and happy that these consumers loved and was buying their items. There was a lot of stock, enough to go around. I felt like this needs deep learning and addressing. Never in my life I've ever seen this rudeness. read more

If you're looking to support and buy local, Kealopiko is your shop! Made on Moloka'i with plenty of aloha, this little shop has definitely come a long way since starting in 2006. Their easy to wear, Hawaiian graphic designs are all unique and one-of-a-kind as each piece is hand screened and assembled right here in the islands. The fun colors and original designs all work together to create fun combinations while also offering just enough variety for everyone to find their own unique style. From mens aloha shirts and shorts to womens blouses, dresses, and rompers, they also have plenty of choices for keiki and for the home as well. On a most recent visit, I stopped by on the first day of their opening at their NEW Monsarrat location. Although tiny in size, this biz was overflowing with aloha; from when I walked in, all throughout my visit and even upon leaving, the staff was fantastic, friendly, and kind. Always offering me help, fielded all of my questions, and even offering me great advice (because I'm indecisive, lol). Parking here is pretty easy with two stalls right in front. I just so happened to be coming from the KCC farmer's market and found street parking on Monsarrat not far from the shop and walked. All in all, I love this local biz. Aloha this store! Beautiful island designs! One of my favorites!!! Went to their Aloha pillow pop-up at South Shore Marketplace. Absolutely amazing merchandise for home , their products will bring a warm island feel in to any home. The right combination of beautiful colors and patterns! The associates are so nice and helpful . I bought a queen quilt, two baby blankets, a pillowcase and a poof to put your feet up. Can't wait to get home and display my new treasures! I also have a small collection of their aloha shirts and a short. I love the feel of the fabric it's so easy to wear. They also feature beautiful crafts from local artists. Very disappointed with the customer service here. You would think that a "Hawaiian" store would at least have hospitality and welcome you when you enter and intend to kako'o their business. But nope, I walked in and no greeting, no aloha, no howzit, no hello. Then as I looked around the workers seemed more interested in each other than in trying to provide any kind of customer service, kind of making me feel unwelcome. Too bad, I've bought many things from online before and was pretty excited to check out the store since I was in town. Maybe next time it'll be better with more aloha. read more

I love Kealopiko and have been a customer ever since I purchased a puka square from their booth at 'Aha Wahine years ago. Went in yesterday to exchange a shirt I had purchased online: their sizing changed for one of their newest 'ahukai and became much smaller! Although they noted that on their website the sizing was smaller for me it was off by 2 sizes! However, this review is solely based on my experience at their new location. It was the first time I went in to their Kapahulu store and i was shocked at how different the customer service was from their Kaka'ako store, where the salespeople were extremely nice and wonderful. The two girls who were there yesterday acted very annoyed when I came in to do the exchange. It was around 520p and they close at 6p, so I wasn't making them stay open just for me or anything. They didn't talk to me directly almost the whole time...They talked to each other! Their whole 'ano was very bored and put-upon! It was so bad the other person I came in with commented on how rude it was after we left. He halekū'ai Hawai'i kēia? Based on this experience, I'll probably stick to online orders and exchanges when I purchase from Kealopiko. read more

There is absolutely nothing bad to say about this shop. I wish I could shop there more often... The designs change often and the patterns are so beautiful. I love that they use bright colors like pink and emerald green a lot. The dresses are so comfortable and I always get compliments when I wear any of their clothes. They make nice clothes at a good price, and I always want to support local. However, they must do extremely limited runs, then hype it up on social media. For the latest release, it was set for an 11:00 release. I was online right at that time, and got the two things I wanted in my shopping cart. Then their site crashed. When I was able to get back on in a few minutes, it claims everything was sold out. I even drove to the brick and mortar store, and the line was causing traffic on the road. Not sure that anyone was actually able to get what they wanted, which such limited runs of items. Maybe they could make more since demand is so high? Or maybe they don't need to hype it up on social media to create such a mess. I'm also reading all the other reviews and I'm so sad to report that everything being said about the lack of customer service is true. It doesn't hurt anyone to show a little aloha! My cousin told me about this store and during my vacation in Moloka'i, she took me to their print house on Moloka'i - they were having a sale. I thought their designs were very cute, good quality, and unique. On this day, I was in the area and thought I'd peek in to see what the Oahu store provides. The store was nicely arranged and was easy for me to see all their merchandise. They have men, women, and keiki clothes. The patterns are amazing and have a range of sizes. The price is a bit expensive, but you cannot deny the quality. It's hard to find good quality clothes. PLUS it's local!! THE place to come when looking for Hawaiian design. The staff are very friendly and was available if I needed assistance. It's always a PLUS to be recognized when inside the store. Purchased $300 of merchandise. Chose to return the merchandise for a refund, same day. They said one of the three items was a final sale. There was no signage saying final sale and they gave us no heads up. The other two products could not be returned for refund, only store credit. There is a reason why this business only has three stars. I live in a Hawai and I am a surfer. The poncho was very expensive and when it showed up, it was cheaply made and poorly constructed - paper thin and rough material and terribly cut - my girlfriend said I looks like I am wearing a rice sack. I asked politely to return it for a refund and was told no refunds are offered, only store credit. Right, like I wanted to trade in this piece of junk for another piece of junk. This one will go into the landfill, where it belongs. I purchased a far superior one from Amazon for 1/3 the price. So much for buying local. read more

I called to check to see if the store would be open because yelp said it was closed. When I got to the store there was a post it note saying they were closed for lunch from 2-2:45. There was no mention of the store closing for lunch online or when I talked to them 10 min earlier. There were still customers in the store and there was more than one worker in the store so I don't understand why the entire store needs to be closed for that long. When I called the store to ask about the hours they didn't pick up. They just looked at me called from outside the shop. I drove all the out to do some last minute Christmas shopping and I'm very disappointed with the store. read more

The reason I'm leaving this review is because of Customer service, not welcoming at all, demanding that we wear face mask which they provided at door and sanitizing of hands, even though there where no other customers in store. No hello or greeting at front door and the girls were a little snobby! I recently learned about this company from a customer and immediately fell in love with their designs and products. A few weeks ago I went in to visit their store and had wonderful experience. Not only were the two women welcoming and friendly, but they were extremely helpful when suggesting fit and what looked best for my body style. I appreciated their kindness and cheerful attitude. Zero customer service at this store! I always come to this store when I'm shopping at South Shore. I came in the other week looking to buy an aloha shirt. I was the only customer in the store and there were two employees. No one acknowledged me as I entered, asked me if I needed any help while I was looking, or said bye when I left! While I was browsing, I made eye contact with one of the employees to make sure she knew I was in the store. She looked at me like it was such an inconvenience for me to be there. It was more important for them to be FaceTiming, talking about some other employee "not working on the weekends and she needs to be talked to" gibberish. I guess the manager (or whoever) they were FaceTiming with is okay with their employees having zero customer engagement, South Shore Market is always dead when I go, and I always wonder how the smaller businesses survive. I'm pretty sure your small local business needs customers. My boyfriend and I usually come here during the holidays to buy aloha shirts but after this recent experience, NAAAAH. They might have a friendly appearance on Instagram but the shopping experience at the store is complete opposite. Super disappointed! read more

I love supporting local artists and vendors but unfortunately, customer service is totally lacking in this establishment. We visited the store on 3/8/20 and not once did the store employee greet us (despite being right in front of her). Her eyes were glued on her phone/computer behind the register. No smile, no eye contact, no "welcome," no "do you need any help." I would have purchased a few aloha shirts that day, but I'd rather patronize a local vendor like Sig Zane. Kealopiko needs to find better employees that embrace customer service. This seems to be a recurring theme as other customers are posting similar experiences. read more

Just tried to exchange a shirt that had been given to me as a gift. I wanted to exchange it because it was too large for me. I had never worn the shirt, which was still in perfect condition. I was told that they could not exchange it because it had been purchased "at an event". I fail to understand the rationale. I like to support local businesses whenever possible, but it is hard to recommend a company that has such poor customer service. I don't plan to shop there again. read more
