Fish and chips, only they serve horrible coated fries. Never in my life have I been served coated fries at a chipper.
    John S.

The best fish and chips I've ever had came from McDonagh's, a small shop in Galway, Ireland. They're been serving locals and tourists alike for four generations, since 1902. I didn't expect that kind of quality from the Kilted Kod food truck, but I had hopes for a better meal from the truck that recently came to our workplace. The fish was unremarkable. There didn't appear to be any seasoning and even the malt vinegar, which came in small Sysco-style plastic packets, was low quality. I've eaten a lot of fish and chips over the years and I've never been served coated fries. Let me say that again: never. What a way to ruin an international treasure. They were horrible. Ten bucks seemed like a lot for two pieces of fish and the fries. McDonagh's serves the same for under $7. And a food truck doesn't have the overhead of a brick and mortar restaurant. The staff seemed rushed and weren't very friendly. Food truck owners are usually excited about their offerings and the service they provide and impart that to their customers. Not so at the Kilted Kod.

I was mad craving something greasy this past Friday and remembered Kilted Kod typically hangs out at the Journey Church parking lot on this day. My last experience here last year was fantastic. I was really hoping for the same outcome but it fell just a tad short off. I ordered the same 2 piece Alaskan cod n chips ($10.00) as before, this time adding a side of homemade coleslaw ($1.50) and my husband (not a fish fan, weird dude) got the 2 piece chicken n chips ($12.00). The portions seem generous, but for the price it's okay. My cod pieces were definitely greasier than before. My first bite literally felt like eating fried grease. It also tasted rather old. Same with the fries. I didn't feel very good afterwards. The chicken strips were huge! I had a couple bites and they were awesome. I thought the coleslaw was rather watered down and tasteless. It definitely could have used more sugar or salt to enhance flavor. All in all it satisfied by yearn for an oily dinner but it was a little too much this time. I hate to have to drop my rating from 5 to 3 stars when my expectations were so high based on a wonderful previous experience. I'm a little weary to promise a return - at least next time I'll have an idea of what to expect.

Excellent fish, but that is what everyone already knows. Chips are fine, not the style that normally appear as chips in England. These are Idaho style chips. The cole slaw was not overpowered by mayonnaise like can happen. Overall, a good meal, but the cost is way out of balance to the product. The search for Fish and Chips continues.

The Kilted Kod food truck. Scottish Fish and Chips are their main claim to fame, but they also serve Chicken and Chips.

I love food trucks! The Kilted Kod is in our neck of the woods once a month. I have a short 30-minute lunch break, and so food trucks like The Kilted Kod always come in handy. Scottish Fish and Chips are their main claim to fame. But they also serve Chicken and Chips. And (get this) hot chocolate (seasonal only). The Kilted Kod is advertised as a "family-owned and operated business with the goal of providing the best food at the best value and giving the best service in the Treasure Valley." The owners traveled to Scotland and had the pleasure of eating traditional Fish and Chips on a daily basis. This allowed them to become more adept at the Fish and Chips business. Each order of Fish and Chips comes with malt vinegar. They go well together. The malt vinegar is also said to be effective at slowing down your blood sugar spike after eating high-carb meals (like Fish and Chips). If you order Chicken and Chips, then you get to pick between two types of sauce (ranch or BBQ). The dishes are reasonably priced. Two-piece fish and chips are priced at $10. Four-piece fish and chips at $14. Two pieces of fish and two pieces of chicken and chips at $14. Not bad, eh? I haven't tried legit Fish and Chips from Britain, hence I can't speak about the authenticity of The Kilted Kod's version. However, I do know that I liked their Fish and Chips. The fish wasn't fishy. Skin off. Lightly battered and so you can taste the Alaskan cod. Each fish was 3 ounces or so. Not crispy. Not too oily. Pretty large serving, I must say! Chicken was standard. But the fries were fantastic. Very crispy, just how I like it. The lady and the gentleman running The Kilted Kod were incredibly efficient. Lines can get long, but they make sure to fry the fish and chicken strips in advance to avoid longer wait times, yet they also make sure that each dish is served hot and fresh for their customers. Solid four stars in my book!

I didn't order four whole pieces of fish, nope. Your eyes deceive you.

Our server, MJ, did a really great job taking care of us. She was nice, friendly, helpful, and attentive. Our daughter had the Unicorn sushi roll with a side of edamame, my wife had a bowl of clam chowder and the shrimp scampi, and I had the fish and chips (cod; they also offer salmon and halibut, but the halibut, which I would have liked, was double the price at $38). For dessert, we shared the key lime pie. My wife said the clam chowder was OK, but more potatoes than clams. She did like her scampi. Our daughter liked the sushi roll. And, I liked the beer battered cod with the tartar sauce, and their fries were nicely seasoned and fairly crispy ( a little crispier would have been nice). The key lime pie had a rougher texture; I like it more creamy. Still good, though. I liked the exterior of the building. Red brick, arched windows that have a Mediterranean feel, and an exterior staircase that gives a bit of an industrial vibe. I thought it would be a little more upscale inside, but it is more basic wood tables and booths. There is a patio area, and it looks like there is an upstairs patio or dining area as well. All in all, a good first experience. We will definitely return.

From the moment we walked in, you could tell this was a true family-run restaurant. The atmosphere felt warm and welcoming, and our waitress was fantastic--friendly, attentive, and happy to share recommendations for places to check out around Boise. The food was so good that we completely forgot to take pictures before digging in, which honestly says everything. We started with the Caesar salad, which was solid, but the stars of the meal were the entrées. My husband ordered the shrimp Alfredo, and I had the Rosemary Chicken Formaggio. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, flavorful, and homemade. Somehow, it was even better the next day as leftovers. My husband's favorite part of the meal was actually the rosemary focaccia loaf they bring out with oil and vinegar. Simple, but absolutely delicious. If you're visiting Boise and looking for great Italian food, Luciano's is absolutely worth the stop. We'd happily come back the next time we're in town.

Walking in, it honestly felt a little more kitschy strip mall seafood spot than I expected -- huge menu, lots of combinations, kind of that Cheesecake Factory energy where there are SO many options you stop knowing what the specialty is supposed to be. I ordered the cioppino and that was probably the biggest letdown for me. The broth was really thin and soupy without much depth. Weirdly, even the frozen Trader Joe's cioppino has more richness and flavor going on. We also tried the halibut fish and chips and they were... fine? Not bad, not amazing, just kind of middle-of-the-road for the price point. That said, I do think this might just be one of those places where you order very specifically. Everyone seems to swear by the halibut plates with sauces, so next time I'd probably try something like the lemon caper version instead. But at around $35 for some of the plates, I kept thinking I'd personally rather go get sushi somewhere or have two really good craft cocktails instead. Still glad we finally tried it though because it had been on my local Boise food list forever.

The menu is - which I hope is a work in progress, came to us in laminated sheets with a ring. The prices are elevated here when compared to the Nampa location. My daughter ordered the Mojarra, my mom ordered a chicken burrito and my wife ordered the flautas. NOTE: Rice and Beans for my Mom's burrito was an additional $3.50. She begrudging ordered the rice and beans. It look some time for our dinner, and several diners received their order before us but I would suspect that it was due to the Mojarra - fried whole fish. Their plates arrived and my wife's flautas looked the best. A matter of fact, that picture is featured on El Guero's Yelp page. My Mom's burrito was very thin and small for the price point. My daughter's Mojarra looked good albeit slightly overcooked and burned. My Mom caught my attention and asked me, 'Where's the chicken?' in her burrito. I took a peak and didn't see any chicken whatsoever, I brought up to the server, and she just said sorry. I don't remember if there's a price difference between a chicken burrito and bean and cheese burrito but that was a dealbreaker for us especially having to pay an additional $3.50 for rice and beans. For the three of them, i did not eat, the bill was close to $70.00 In summary, we prefer the location in Nampa if we are going to have a special night out or celebrate but we're not going back to the new location in Meridian. It lacks soul and service. The prices, while adjusted for Meridian doesn't make up for the inadequacies in the food, service, and ambiance.

My sister and I showed up first. We got sat at a round table and chilled until the rest of our party showed up. After everyone got there, we all checked out the menu. There wasn't a real organized system between the employees that served our table. It was a reservation for 5 but only 2 menus and 2 waters were initially dropped off. After everyone got there, 2 more waters were brought out but not the 5th glass that was missing. Then we got an over abundance of menus when we just needed a couple more. It was a rough start. We finally got to order appetizers and dinner. I got the Asparagus Delight with extra chicken. My sister ordered Pad See Ew. My cousin got the Khao Soi with rice noodles. The two other prom moms got General's chicken and a sushi roll. For starters we got the fried green beans and calamari. The wait on the appetizers seemed long. Nothing is more annoying than not being able to enjoy your starter cause your dinner was right behind it. 2 fried green beans were brought out. We had to call the server and ask about the calamari. We were confused if that was 1 appetizer of fried green beans split into 2 plates for easier sharing or if it was actually 2 orders. Well, it was 2 orders so the extra portion was taken back. The calamari did come out shortly but was fast considering we waited so long initially for the appetizers come out. I didn't try the appetizers but from what was being said the fried green beans were good and they have had better calamari. As fast as that calamari came out, I'm sure it was prepared quickly. Not taking the normal time to actually prepare something that could turn into rubber if it's not cooked properly. Dinner came out shortly. My dish looked really good. There was bright green pieces of asparagus. A few hearty chunks of cauliflower. I noticed quite a few shrimp and a decent amount of chicken. My dish was good. The veggies were fresh and crispy. The sauce was on the sweeter side but still tasted good. The shrimp was tender but did have a fishy scent to them. The chicken could have been velveted. It was white meat and we all know white meat can lean towards the drier side. I think velveting could have fixed that. I did ask for extra chicken and in all honesty I don't think I really got the extra I had ordered. Service was decent. The timing of the appetizers and food could be worked on. Some communication between employees would have been nice for more organization. I came here for lunch and wasn't impressed with portion sizes and I will have to say I wasn't impressed with the dinner portion either. It's cool that I got to come back and vibe with my family tonight. It was busy so it's great to see that people are out supporting their local Asian restaurant. I unfortunately have such a high bar set from my family and growing up in this industry. I really wish this place would have met my expectations the second time around.
