I've tried kilted cod three times now. The fried fish is so greasy, the grease dripped all over my shirt when I picked it up. Every time I've tried this place I am disappointed. The fish just isn't that good, usually tuff not tender and The fries are overcooked and not good. Nice people though. I don't usually eat fried food, but I had a craving! We had our fish & chips delivered (which is a bit risky, but we did it anyway), so I can't speak to the place itself....only the food we ordered. I have to say it's the best fried fish I think I've ever had, and I used to live in Florida, so that's saying something! The outer crust was magnificently crispy, while the cod inside was perfectly juicy and tender. It made for the perfect combination! I give the fries a little slack, as they were delivered and got a little "limp" on the drive over, but they were just ok. I think there was a coating on them that I wasn't a huge fan of, but they were tender and well-salted (salt is very important to me, lol). If we had gone in for our fish & chips, I think the fries would've been fine. I still think they should get rid of the coating, though....french fries don't need to coated in anything. The batter is almost black and not like real British fish and chips also the British don't ever give those skinny little French fries, When you get fish & chips in Britain you get your own full size cod about 9+ inches long not cut up little chunks. I was mad craving something greasy this past Friday and remembered Kilted Kod typically hangs out at the Journey Church parking lot on this day. My last experience here last year was fantastic. I was really hoping for the same outcome but it fell just a tad short off. I ordered the same 2 piece Alaskan cod n chips ($10.00) as before, this time adding a side of homemade coleslaw ($1.50) and my husband (not a fish fan, weird dude) got the 2 piece chicken n chips ($12.00). The portions seem generous, but for the price it's okay. My cod pieces were definitely greasier than before. My first bite literally felt like eating fried grease. It also tasted rather old. Same with the fries. I didn't feel very good afterwards. The chicken strips were huge! I had a couple bites and they were awesome. I thought the coleslaw was rather watered down and tasteless. It definitely could have used more sugar or salt to enhance flavor. All in all it satisfied by yearn for an oily dinner but it was a little too much this time. I hate to have to drop my rating from 5 to 3 stars when my expectations were so high based on a wonderful previous experience. Very impressive. After seeing some FB posts I gave it a try. When I pulled up and saw a couple of Meridian's finest I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. By the time I got home with my order of fish and chips, I sat down and opened the container. 4pcs of fish and fries nicely fried and still pipping hot. The flavor and freshness was amazing. The best fish and chips I've ever had came from McDonagh's, a small shop in Galway, Ireland. They're been serving locals and tourists alike for four generations, since 1902. I didn't expect that kind of quality from the Kilted Kod food truck, but I had hopes for a better meal from the truck that recently came to our workplace. The fish was unremarkable. There didn't appear to be any seasoning and even the malt vinegar, which came in small Sysco-style plastic packets, was low quality. I've eaten a lot of fish and chips over the years and I've never been served coated fries. Let me say that again: never. What a way to ruin an international treasure. They were horrible. Ten bucks seemed like a lot for two pieces of fish and the fries. McDonagh's serves the same for under $7. And a food truck doesn't have the overhead of a brick and mortar restaurant. The staff seemed rushed and weren't very friendly. Food truck owners are usually excited about their offerings and the service they provide and impart that to their customers. Excellent fish, but that is what everyone already knows. Chips are fine, not the style that normally appear as chips in England. These are Idaho style chips. The cole slaw was not overpowered by mayonnaise like can happen. Overall, a good meal, but the cost is way out of balance to the product. The search for Fish and Chips continues. read more

I removed 2 stars because The Kilted Kod is too inconsistent in their cooking quality. Once the fish was overcooked, and today it was greasy and undercooked. We were SO disappointed because we have really enjoyed the food there several times - just not ALL the time. We tried to reduce the oil on the coating with our napkins, and they became soaked. As a last resort we took the fish home and tried to finish cooking it. Ended up throwing out the coating, and eating only the cod. On the other hand, the fries and coleslaw were amazing! I love food trucks! The Kilted Kod is in our neck of the woods once a month. I have a short 30-minute lunch break, and so food trucks like The Kilted Kod always come in handy. Scottish Fish and Chips are their main claim to fame. But they also serve Chicken and Chips. And (get this) hot chocolate (seasonal only). The Kilted Kod is advertised as a "family-owned and operated business with the goal of providing the best food at the best value and giving the best service in the Treasure Valley." The owners traveled to Scotland and had the pleasure of eating traditional Fish and Chips on a daily basis. This allowed them to become more adept at the Fish and Chips business. Each order of Fish and Chips comes with malt vinegar. They go well together. The malt vinegar is also said to be effective at slowing down your blood sugar spike after eating high-carb meals (like Fish and Chips). If you order Chicken and Chips, then you get to pick between two types of sauce (ranch or BBQ). The dishes are reasonably priced. Two-piece fish and chips are priced at $10. Four-piece fish and chips at $14. Two pieces of fish and two pieces of chicken and chips at $14. Not bad, eh? I haven't tried legit Fish and Chips from Britain, hence I can't speak about the authenticity of The Kilted Kod's version. However, I do know that I liked their Fish and Chips. The fish wasn't fishy. Skin off. Lightly battered and so you can taste the Alaskan cod. Each fish was 3 ounces or so. Not crispy. Not too oily. Pretty large serving, I must say! Chicken was standard. But the fries were fantastic. Very crispy, just how I like it. The lady and the gentleman running The Kilted Kod were incredibly efficient. Lines can get long, but they make sure to fry the fish and chicken strips in advance to avoid longer wait times, yet they also make sure that each dish is served hot and fresh for their customers. I used to drive HOURS to Stanley Idaho, for what were the BEST fish and chips in Idaho - in my opinion, at the time. We recently went to Stanley to find the place closed. Sold and never coming back. I was crushed. We drove past this place for the thousandth time in Lowes lot in Meridian and I decided to try them out as I never got my fix in Stanley a few weeks back. It was PHENOMENAL! Thankfully we were able to get the last of the fish and chips because they were sold out after our order. I've seen this food truck parked every Friday for a few months now. It was finally time to stop and place an order. The fish was fried to perfection and very delicious. The fries are "crack fries" like the ones sold in Lincoln, NE at HopCat. The HopCat fries were voted Top 10 in America. The Kilted Cod fries are just as addictive. My only criticisms are the 1 tarter sauce cup per 4 pieces of fish. It should have two. And the Cole Slaw was very bland. No flavor at all. Maybe a pinch of salt and some pineapple juice. This is the best food truck in the Treasure Valley! And some of the best fish and chips I've had. I'm so glad they have a regular day (Wednesdays so far) on the very west side of Meridian - 10 Mile and I-84. I've gotten several co-workers hooked and willing to drive with me from Nampa on several past Wednesdays. The pieces of fish are a good size and the batter is deliciously crispy. The fries are also perfectly crispy and seasoned. The texture of the fries/chips reminds me of a double-fried fry. So good when the malt vinegar spills on to them and even better dipped in the tartar sauce. And the tartar sauce - yummy! I need to remember to get an extra next time because I'm always scrapping every bit out of the cup with the last of my fries. Hubby loves their chicken and chips, but I haven't had those so I can't really comment on those. They have local BBQ sauces at the pick up window. They also offer a combo of fish and chicken with chips. Perfect for variety and options for non-fish people. Service is always friendly and the wait is never too long. But they get busy so I always plan to go before noon or after 1pm for lunch. They take both cash and cards. If you can find them parked at a local brewery you are in for a treat. This is food that is even better with a cold beer. Sadly the brewery we used to visit because The Kilted Kod was there has closed.
