I came to The Kitchen American Bistro with a group of five for brunch. A lot of things on the menu looked tasty, making it a tough decision. I ultimately went with the cripsy cauliflower (carrots, chickpeas, tamarind chutney, cilantro chutney, mango, pickled red onion, herb salad) because it sounded unique, and a latte. Both the latte and cauliflower dish were great! I really loved the flavors of the cauliflower and each bite tasted a little different. I also tried some french fries and thought they were decent. We grabbed a brioche donut (yuzu-coconut, toasted meringue) to go, and consensus was that the donut was painfully sweet, to the point of not being enjoyable. Overall, we had a nice meal here and thought the menu and service were great. The prices are pretty high, which would be the main thing preventing me from wanting to come back -- for similar or slightly higher prices elsewhere, could likely get a notably nicer meal. read more

My girlfriend and I came here for lunch and we split two sandwiches and asked for each to be cut in half to make splitting easier. We were informed the chef would be unwilling to cut the fried chicken sandwich in half because it would mess with the breading so we would have to do it ourselves ??? Here is my story... Came into Denver late, missed my compatriots for dinner, decided to dine here anyway. Walking in the door your met with a very pleasing sound of happy people eating and bar sounds just beyond the hostess station. The hostess was pleasant and accommodating, but she forgot about me while I was at the bar. I don't mind so much, because the bartender kept me entertained. All this sets you up for what should be a amazing evening. Personally, I decided to start at the bar and get a couple drinks. I went with the House "Kitchen" Martini and ordered it up. Delivered as ordered. Excellent choice for a starter, but not for a beginner. The gin definitely had a herbaceous purpose - since that took you to a different region of taste. Still- Highly recommend. Waiting for my table, I decided to also do an old fashion. Was really good - but did need an extra shot of bitters. Started off just too sweet, and needed more balance. Did get my table - and the most outstanding part of the meal were the carrots. These carrots I can't even begin to describe. They were outstanding examples of how to do a carrot dish. The combination of julienned mint with Barada cheese, Szechwan chili oil, cilantro, pistachios, and sesame seeds - are just off the hook. Don't know how to describe it - you just gotta try it! I was licking my fork, wanting seconds. Had the salmon dish for Main, but it was unremarkable - Well presented, but just kind of got lost with the beans and the odd pieces of ham they threw in. The garlic wasn't even well toasted. Biggest disappointment of the night. Needed to have the beans smoked before cooking, imho. (Seriously, the salmon & the beans lost that extra star.) This is a fine-dining place with an ever-changing, unique menu. We went there for lunch in early October, our group ordering a Cubano ($18), Crab Fried Rice (20) and a cheeseburger (19!). I loved the fried rice. It had a wonderful secret ingredient (which may have been a form of Cilantro). It came with a en egg on it. The Cuban and cheeseburger were good, but nothing to write home about (and for those prices perhaps they should have been!). The latter 2 came with fries. Serving sizes were good and Service was very good. Including a craft beer and before the tip, the total came to just under $70. When we first started going to The Kitchen, it was considered a place where local sourcing and food prepared honestly could be had. They used to have a board where they listed the sourcing of their ingredients. We haven't been back in a while and my BIL invited us to celebrate my sister's birthday. The room was full and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The dishes we had were good and beautifully plated. We ordered a variety of dishes because the waitress said that it was a "shared" meal. (It was only later that we discovered that one of our guests did not have enough to eat.) Many people talked about the carrots and so we ordered them - they were good. The crispy cauliflower dish, though, was even better and included a different preparation of carrots. The gnocchi dish was so small that it really wasn't a shared dish and a similar portion size issue was true for the shared cote de boef. On the other hand, the mussels were generous and delicious. Please ask them to provide you with some bread to soak up all the goodness because they don't provide bread unless you ask. The lobster roll was also generous, especially since this is traditionally a single serving style of dish. My sister accepted choosing one of their desserts as their birthday gift to her. (Thanks to the Kitchen.) She chose the mousse dome and it was not only a showy end to the meal, but also delicious. The first feeling I had when I entered The Kitchen was of a cozy moody living/dining room of a country club. Dimly lit with classical 21st century decor, you want to hubbub with your friends there. It's where you would want to plan a coup over dinner. The waiters are very attentive but not overbearing. They are very concerned about your experience. They will ask you about allergies and will make sure you don't get anything that can cause you trouble. The food is a bit on the heavy side. The dishes are cooked with plenty of fat and sodium. However, the original flavors of the did get lost in the fat. I felt a bit heavy after eating dinner there. The quantity seems smaller than it is. But it's a good amount. The black Caesar was LOADED with Parmesan, which I honestly didn't love but to someone else may be heaven. So disappointed. The Kitchen has a spectacular, unique menu; a great location and a fun vibe. But missed the mark so badly tonight that we won't return. Sat outside. One of the chairs was sticky. Husband sat on it and got sticky stuff on his pants. Not a big deal. Stuff happens but, in hindsight, it was a sign of the overall sloppiness we experienced. For the three of us, ordered the carrots (10/10), the gnochetti, burrata, a steak, fries and mussels. The steak was flaccid, unsalted and lukewarm. The fries were tepid and soggy. Had the been crisped, they would have been awesome. The mussels, served last, were actually cold. Dropped off at our unbussed messy table with no bowl for the shells or a mussel fork. I had to ask for both. Ten mins later they showed up. The focaccia I was told would be served with the mussels never appeared. Asked server for a spoon as I had nothing to dunk in the sauce and eons later she brought me a teaspoon. It was such a bummer of a night. We were really excited to try The Kitchen and maybe on another night it would deliver. But the sloppiness around getting THREE of the six dishes out hot and appropriately plated made it such a BUST. I'm going to be straight up honest here: this is a pretty pricey restaurant to have lunch in. However, the food was top notch. The service? Hmmm. Friendly, but still lacking a bit. Let's put a pin in that for a moment. We tried the following menu options: lobster roll, chicken sandwich, cheeseburger, and a Roman chicken salad. We also ordered an extra side of fries for the table and the adult (me) ordered a glass of the sauv blanc. Everything was enjoyed, it was all well prepared, presentation was beautiful, and everyone was satisfied with the portions. Back to the service: We weren't checked on at all after the food arrived and we'd had time to try everything. We were nearly done by the time I had to flag down our server to get more water, at which time I asked for the check. He was not rude to us at all, but we did feel a little ignored. All in all, I would come back here. We liked the food, the decor, the vibe, and the location. It's Boulder!! It's Pearl Street!! What's not to love? Best brunch place I have been in a while! Probably my all time top! The food were all absolutely delicious!! I would go back to Boulder, CO just to brunch at this spot again!! Here's my list/ranking based on what I tried (if interested): The chilaquiles was absolutely delicious!! It was basically a brunch spin on nachos! I couldn't get enough of this. The brioche donut was a winner as well! Imagine a banana cream sugar donut! I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The French toast tasted like it was an apple pie that went wrong! I loved it, but I wished I had ice cream to top this off. Overall, it was delicious! The cruffin was good too, but I would prefer a cronut more. How it was described, and by how it was named, it is a croissant and muffin fusion. And finally, the cubano! Large chunks of meat in every bite! But honestly, I wouldn't get this again as a non-local to the area. A pretty generic, but generous, order of a sandwich. She was very patient and understanding and made sure we always had drinks and that our food came in time. I had the waffles and they were AMAZING! It was a weekday and not too busy so as walk-ins, my boyfriend and I were seated right away. Service was fantastic and our server helped orient us to the menu and provided some great recommendations. I ordered the cubano sandwich, my boyfriend ordered the lobster roll, and we decided to split an order of the crispy cauliflower. While everything was delicious, we could have done without the crispy cauliflower and just stuck with the sandwiches because it was a lot of food (way too much for us to finish)! I really enjoyed the cubano sandwich - the pork was incredibly moist/tender and this was honestly the best cubano sandwich I have ever had. Four dishes tested in total: The ceviche: 3.5 out of 5 - not bad but very creamy with the avocado and not as acidic / lemon-fresh as you typically expect The crab fried rice: 5 out of 5 - get this, it's phenomenally rich and filling. Enter the lemony, chili pepper, doused in fluffy parm broccolini; scallops with pomegranate, apple, and celery root *creamy* purée; and the carrots on whipped feta, with hazelnuts, sesame. The latter was quite oily, but for the most part I could pick up pieces around it (but could have been dealt a lighter hand). I felt like a horse and the lamb was not any better. The ambience was good and the weight staff was great, but the food was terrible. The salad was good, however. We had Thanksgiving lunch/dinner today at The Kitchen and I have to admit, it was not worth the price of the prix fixe menu of $99 per person. We arrived for a 2pm reservation on time and the hostess stand was beyond chaotic with at least five parties checking in at once and no one keeping track of which parties had checked in and in what order. After checking in and waiting 20 minutes, we watched another party of four walk in, greeted and seated immediately--as it turns out two tables away from us in the main dining room. I had to say something finally to the interim hostess/server who ended up seating us a minute later saying, "we are doing the best we can." Having worked in fine dining, I absolutely understand the challenges of a busy holiday seating, but I took exception to this comment, as we had been (apparently too) patiently waiting and far too easily overlooked by a newly arriving party. The food: pimento cheese spread and biscuits were delicious; the turkey and cranberry were quite good, as were the stuffing and mashed potatoes; the brussel sprouts and the carrots were particularly flavorful. Hominy--great flavor, but much too soupy and seemed like an odd addition to the table especially without spoons. The dessert was exceptional! The autumn pie described as "AUTUMN POT PIE (v) root vegetable, squash, sage, phyllo dough" was definitely a missed opportunity, as it was offered as one of the main entrees and it was exactly this: diced squash with crispy (not browned but gray...) filo shavings on top. No gravy, no crust and looked nothing like the picture shown on the website. It was definitely a disappointment and I expected higher caliber of vegetarian option from a restaurant like The Kitchen. Our server was lovely and attentive as needed, but the experience felt rushed. We were seated at 2:20ish and out of the restaurant by 3:30. For over $500 (and only two drinks), I would pass next time on The Kitchen's family style feast. read more

Tried this place last night after passing it for many years. Really disappointed in the food. Tried the Butter lettuce salad and it was really lackluster. Lettuce was wilted, room temp with black spots on leaves. Had the skirt/flank steak which was good but came out before the other entree and had cooled by the time the other came out. Was good though. Also had grilled chicken entree. It was advertised as half grilled chicken but in reality was a grilled chicken breast fillet or two over fries with gravy. Fries were great. $30 for chicken breast's and fries was way overpriced. Definitely will not be coming back based on this visit. read more

Our favorite meal in Boulder! Reminded me of the high quality of food and wait service you would expect from a well-established restaurant in a big city - a definite gem in this town. The hostesses were kind and welcoming, and the waiters were helpful in describing dishes and overall very attentive. The place was jam packed, every table was full, yet the service was on point. Dishes came out quickly, waters were constantly refilled, and everyone was friendly and pleasant to talk to. Grilled oysters would not normally be my kind of thing, but w o w - they are to die for. Also really enjoyed the crispy cauliflower, black spaghetti with rock shrimp, nduja, and bread crumbs, a tartare, and a couple of very delicious cocktails. Everything we had was even better than it sounded. You can tell each dish was conceived of and prepared thoughtfully - each one was well-balanced (often with a refreshingly unique mix of ingredients!), perfectly seasoned, and never over- or under-sauced.
