This cute, clean restaurant is nicely located in downtown Boulder, and it had been on my list for a while. While the food was generally good, my steak came out unpleasantly cold, not just rested, but actually cold. I mentioned this to our waitress when she eventually came by and asked for it to be fixed. Unfortunately, she returned with the same cold steak, just on a hot plate. This really didn't meet my expectations for a semi-upscale restaurant. The manager did come by to offer a semi-sincere apology, but overall, while it wasn't terrible, I wouldn't go back. read more

Single diner review. I visited Oak at Fourteenth on a recent trip to Boulder (11/2/24). It came highly recommended from locals as well as the Michelin guide, but for me it was just meh. I got the Crispy Arancini to start and asked my server specifically if this was a good appetizer for one person (as the menu lists "small and shared"). I was told yes, and the dish was very large. It was good, but the risotto wasn't balanced by the blue cheese and spiced honey. It just tasted like fried rice balls. For my entree I ordered the Nonna's Sunday Ragout and it was tasty, but nothing stood out on the plate (except for an exceedingly large amount of garnish). I was in on a busy Saturday evening and the place was packed. I arrived at my reservation time and had to wait. Service was rushed and impersonal. I might have ordered dessert, but no one asked. Attire was mostly casual and the volume was loud. Overall, I'd say Oak at Fourteeth is a decent restaurant for an evening out, but it's nothing to write home about. read more

Lovely service from the hostess and server. Sat at the "chef's table/bar" and asked the gentleman behind the counter what his favorite dish they offered. "Meatballs." That's it. That's the only interaction I had with him the entire time. Not exactly the experience I was hoping for when I selected the chef's table, but whatever. Nice little place with a cozy dining room, bar, chef's table/bar plus a back room, which was hosting a private party during my visit. The hamachi crudo aguachile was quite delicious. I should have gone with my other choice, which was the crispy arancini with blue cheese and spicy honey. (Sounds yummy, right?) But I went with the server's suggestion of the special roasted sunchokes and just really didn't like them. I also asked for a slice of their focaccia (who can resist the squishy softness of some good focaccia?!) but I was sorely disappointed when it came out oven roasted and rock hard. Wait. What? Thankfully, the removed the $5 charge for the single piece of bread from my tab when I mentioned not loving it, and the server did apologize and said she should have asked if I wanted it heated. Overall, a bit of a swing and a miss for me. I think it could have been a better experience with a few different choices on my part. I'd certainly give them another try if I find myself in Boulder again. read more

I got the apple and kale salad for an appetizer, which was way better than I expected. The cheese and candied nuts were a great addition to the salad and balanced the vinaigrette very well. Also, the whole salad was nicely chopped so it was very easy to eat with spoons! This is one dish I would love to have more often in my normal life - a healthy dish that I'm happy to eat. It's not cheap, but it was very tasty. The meatball dish was alright - everything tasted good and worked together, but the meatball itself was a bit drier / tougher than I would prefer. It was a large enough portion size for me to be quite full after eating as well. The server was very attentive and was on top of refilling my water whenever I needed and checking in on how I was doing. However, the food took a very long time to arrive. I was slowly eating the salad trying to save some to eat as a side to the meatballs, but the main dish didn't come! I eventually finished the salad and then I had to wait a further 20-30 minutes - by this time it had been 45 minutes since I ordered. read more

THIS IS A REVIEW OF YELP Yelp notified me about Oak to say people in Longmont find it as a budget-friendly place to dine. Nothing against Oak, but it is not budget-friendly. Oak would rank as one of the most expensive restaurants if it were in Longmont. Their least expensive cocktail is $16 and dinners average over $35. I've eaten at Oak and the food was very good. But is it budget-friendly? Oh, hell no. There are similar places that cost much less in Longmont and offer excellent meals and parking is free and easier to find . Just wanted to point out Yelp isn't necessarily accurate in their ads. Nothing against Oak, but Yelp should look at menu prices before making such a claim. read more

Took a client for dinner. It was a very cold night, and the restaurant was almost as cold as outside. Neither of us took off our coats the entire evening. Maybe we saved the planet, I don't know. Hard to remember anything else, or let's say the food experience wasn't memorable enough to overcome the arctic frost. And it was loud. Too bad. BTW, their sister restaurant, Corrida, is fantastic. This restaurant has really gone downhill. We used to come here often a few years ago, but the last few visits have been so underwhelming. The bar staff move at a snail's pace, and if you're sitting at the corner of the bar, you're forced to stare at their "junk area"- cluttered and disorganized, definitely not something guests should see. During our most recent visit, we ordered dinner and waited an unusually long time for our food. When we checked in with our server, we were told, "Yes, we have a big wedding party tonight, and they're being prioritized for food first." Seriously? Paying customers shouldn't be treated as an afterthought. And to top it off, when our food finally arrived, it was cold. There are so many great restaurants in Boulder now, this one is not one of them. read more

This is probably more like a 3.5 but I'll give it 4 because I like the idea and the menu. It's a cute restaurant near Pearl street with a nice ambiance. Came here with my husband and kids on a Saturday night at 5pm and they were able to seat us without a reservation. Service was friendly and great at times, and a little slower at others. No kids menu but they do offer chicken fingers/fries or buttered pasta for the kiddos. Both kids got the chicken fingers and fries and reported that the fries were the best they've ever had (and they've eaten a lot of fries). They said the chicken fingers crispy crust was more like that of a fish stick--to me it tasted light and crispy. Now to the important food--adult food! My husband and I shared the hamachi crudo and the olive oil poached halibut. The crudo was only ok as the fish tasted fishy, and it needed a touch more seasoning. For the bites where there was a good amount of flaked sea salt, it was better. Beautiful dish but would not order again. The halibut was delicious though--some spicy Calabrian chilis below which added a nice heat, and the squash purée was a nice touch. It would have been nice to have even more purée and also to season the chunks of grilled zucchini a bit more. The shaved zucchini had great seasoning though. We finished off with the peanut butter cup dessert. That was also only ok. The pb mouse was a little loose/runny/soup like and the proportion of mouse to the small scoop of chocolate ice cream was too great. Plus there were 5-7 chocolate brownie (?) bits but they were super crispy and hard--would have like a softer chewier brownie instead. Overall it was really nice to go to a fancy-ish restaurant and still have a couple of kid food options, but I'd skip dessert and choose a different app. read more

This place is great for groups at Pearl Street. The food is cooked on a wood fire and is influenced by different cultures. The dishes change based on the seasonality of the ingredients and the creativity of the chefs. Chicken liver pate: This appetizer has a rich and silky pink chicken liver pate topped with strawberry rhubarb preserves. A crispy and crackling oak grilled focaccia is the perfect vessel for the pate. Crispy Rice Salad: This appetizer is really good because of the crunch and flavors of the rice. The crispy rice has Gulf shrimp, peanuts, ginger, chile, and a delicious palm sugar vinaigrette. Halibut Ceviche: The delicate slices of raw halibut are "cooked" in a tasty yuzu leche de tigre citrus juice. Little bits of tomatoes and gooseberries add sweetness. Colorado Bison: The bison striploin is cooked medium rare and has a tenderness and taste similar to a lean cut of beef. It is stressed with corn, Anaheim chili, and an interesting huckleberry jus. Korean Barbecue Pork Shoulder: The massive plate was placed at the center of our voracious group. The entire pork shoulder was so tender. The meat flaked off until all that was left was the bone, just like a cartoon. There was more of that crispy rice, plus lots of kimchi, and other pickled vegetables. read more

I was aware of this possible issue with skate but figured the kitchen knew how to properly prepare the dish. The manager let us order another entree but the damage was already done. I had not been to Oak at 14th for a while and with my husband we decided to try dinner again since we had good memories from this restaurant. The atmosphere remains unchanged, stylish, hip and casual with the staff looking sharp in jeans and apron. The menu is fairly limited with one page of appetizers/shared plates (making it confusing about the size of the portions, tiny or big enough to share?) and entrees on the other one. We wanted to start with bread to relax and enjoy our drinks while looking at the menu but were told that they were running low and keeping it for the appetizers. That was a disappointment, I wish they would offer it on their menu. I had the Cavatelli Scampi which was good and listed under shared plates; it was big enough as my main course. I don't see Beef Tartare and pasta as plates easily shared with a small group, so it doesn't make sense to me that they don't list these under entrees. My husband's Duck Confit Pansotti was tasty but quite small. He wished he was offered bread to soak up the yummy sauce and make it slightly more substantial. But bread seems to be more and more of a rarity these days. Not only you have to pay for it but too often you don't have that option anymore. Ah, do I miss Europe where they just bring you a free basket of crusty bread even in the cheapest café. I like that the selection of wines by the glass includes very reasonably priced ones. That's definitely a plus and also uncommon. For dessert, the Pavlova was disappointing with a meringue so hard, even with my knife it was impossible to cut without risking having pieces fly to my husband. Pavlova is made from egg whites that are slowly baked to obtain a chewy-crisp texture on top but remains soft marshmallow-like inside. The crunchy edges are just like meringue cookies but it should never be totally dry. Service was fine, although it took a while to get a server to greet us. But the lady taking care of the water was on top of it. Lastly, the menu mention "Due to the current market circumstances, a 5% surcharge will be added to all guest checks" Whatever that means, usually when clients are hit with an extra charge it's for the staff, but here who knows where it goes. I did not bother to ask, knowing that it you dare comment on it you sound like the bad guy. Client fatigue... So, for a place that is not cheap to start with, be ready to add a quarter of your meal to your bill if you leave the expected tip of 20%. Which seems to be more and more the norm since Covid. Sigh... I can't say we had a bad meal, but there were enough annoying things that lowered the experience. read more

Its not New York quality, but very good for this part of the country, hence my 5 star rating (but would be a 4 star establishment in New York). My wife and I had an amazing dinner at Oak on Friday, July 19th. We had the kale, apple, walnut salad, the halibut and the lamb chops. The wines and deserts recommended were also great. Dinner was presented beautifully and the food was incredible. The plating was top notch. The fish was flaky, but moist, and lamb was perfectly medium rare! The food and drink deserved 5 stars by themselves, but what really stood out was the incredible team. We had the opportunity to sit at the chef's counter, where we were amazed at how professional and hard working the waitstaff and kitchen team performed, plus it was practically a show watching the meals being prepared. We also appreciated a relaxing dinner, with dishes being delivered at a pace that allowed us to enjoy the course and talk without being rushed. A very rare thing in US restaurants. Finally, we have to recognize Sous Chef Juan and waitress Kelly who took amazing care of us, chatted and answered my numerous questions, plus conveyed their passion for amazing food and incredible service. The rest of the team was there if a plate needed clearing, or a fork dropped, but these two stood out for their excellence and service to us. Great job! As any CU student will tell you, Pearl street is the place to go for great food off campus. Well this establishment is on the high end of scale when it comes food and price. The decor is simple yet elegant. Yes, the food is spectacular (The roasted chicken is moist and seasoned just right, the homemade pasta offerings incredible, and their starters are original). My only issue with this restaurant was the size of my protein part of my meal (I have included a picture of the portion size). I only received two slices off a strip steak. To be honest with you, I was expecting to receive an entire steak at the price they were asking here. But other than that, this restaurant has impeccable service, and it is one of the few restaurants in the Pearl street area that has parking right out front. read more

Let me start by saying my dinner at Oak was amazing! After snatching reservations, we arrived a few minutes early and had no trouble getting seated. As an appetizer we had the burrata and sweet potato--delicious! It had thinly sliced jalapeños on top with a honey-like drizzle. For dinner we had the fried rice and NY strip steak, which came with a sweet corn side. The corn had coconut in it, so it was a great, flavorful mix. I had the Kurt cocktail and it was also very good! The menu has small plates and large plates, both are meant to be shared like tapas. The restaurant is observing strict social distancing protocols, which I appreciated. Service was great. And speaking of just that, please note the restaurant adds an automatic 24% to your tab as a "Community Value Fee," basically their way of ensuring their staff receives a living wage. read more

Very nice atmosphere but food was pretty mediocre for the price point they're offering. Would give it a 4 but for those prices the food should be spectacular. Specialty drinks- one was very good, the other tasted more like cough syrup. Salad was basically undressed and the pecans were non existent save for the one 1 found at the end. Steak tartar was so seasoned you couldn't taste the beef, might as well have been tofu. The meatballs were very good but burrata and basil were barely on the plate. Bread was unbelievably good, definitely the best thing there we tried. read more
