Biscuits and gravy - the biscuits were overdone and hard to cut and chew through. The gravy was ok. I personally would've preferred a little more sweetness. Breakfast burrito - was really missing protein. It really needed sausage or something. Egg, rice and beans doesn't really cut it. Mac and cheese - decadent, tasty. Star of the show. I had this place on my list for a while and was eager to give it a try. When I arrived I was able to find parking on the street nearby. I walked into a small, cute restaurant. I was greeted at the door and was able to find a seat at the bar. Ray was my bartender and he was super nice. I started with a couple of mimosas and they were good. For my meal I got the fish tacos. The Kitchen Step was not my group's first restaurant of choice for dinner. We were originally going to eat elsewhere but there was a kitchen snafu and thus.. We didn't have a reservation [there was four of us] but were seated quickly, first at a high top and then a regular table once it became available. The vibes are very Apartment Therapy with faux foliage on the wall and hanging ornate mirrors. The bar area is cute, very mid century modern with all the wood. It's not a terribly big restaurant but there is also seating outside. I wasn't overly blown away by the meal overall but there were certainly highlights. We shared the semolina zucchini fries [$14] and the burrata mac & cheese [$16]. The zucchini fries were outstanding. I wasn't expecting them to be shoe string nor I was expecting them to be so crispy and fry-like as they were. I probably could've eaten them alone without the sriracha sauce, which was also delicious. The mac and cheese was interesting but I didn't think it worked with burrata which is a more mild, less salty cheese. The addition of eggplant gave it a weird earthy flavor too. I will say, the pasta was perfectly al dente but I'll stick with the more traditional version. I had the mussels frites [$24] for my entree. The dish comes with a handsome serving of fries and a red chili sauce. The fries were delightful, everything a fry should be- crispy and salty. The mussels in a white wine sauce was fine. Maybe the sauce could have used the lemon already in it rather than on the side. The dessert, however, was phenomenal. We got the strawberry shortcake, the flourless chocolate cake, and the ricotta zeppole [all $10], the latter being my absolute favorite. The zeppole gave me life. They're almost like a funnel cake or a beignet. They were so fluffy and pillowy on the inside and slightly sweet. They were a dream. The sauce on the side- the Nutella and the strawberry marmalade- were great accompaniments. The strawberry shortcake was a second favorite, mostly because of the whipped cream and compote. The cake was light and airy and I don't think it would have been impossible to eat a whole plate by yourself. Lastly, the flourless chocolate cake. It's definitely a chocolate lovers delight. I found it *shock* a little too chocolate-y. I'm not entirely a fan of flourless chocolate cakes in the first place, so take that as you will. The marshmallow whip on top reminded me of a s'mores, the caramel sauce drizzled on the plate was a little too watery. Cocktails: I had the Tequila is like Duct Tape and the Grass is always Greener [both $16]. I was underwhelmed by them both. The former had a nice fruity note but I wasn't overly joyed by it, the latter drink tasted more...green. I was excited by the unique ingredients in each, zaatar and herbs de provence but they seem to have been lost in translation.. Service was speedy but not rushed, all the servers were friendly and we had a good time. The meal in total came out to around $250 which is shockingly less than I thought it would be. Let's start this review with one word, Joe. We had an awesome experience because of his service: He is as an awesome, patient and friendly waiter who waited for our larger party to be seated and gather our orders for dinner. The food was amazing. I had the kale Ceasar salad with grilled chicken and it was amazing! Other people in the party got burgers, pork chop and gnocchi. Everyone was satisfied. I've been to the Kitchen Step a few times and every single time has been a wonderful experience. It was actually the first place I ate out again after I was vaccinated and it will forever hold a place in my heart for the consideration they put into their set up at that time. They had individual outside dining set ups with doors, heat lamps, and chandeliers. That kind of attention to detail really made the experience so much better. Every employee I have met from the wait staff to the hosts to the managers have been so warm, kind, friendly, and helpful. They all elevate the meal because of how wonderful they are. The food and drinks are obviously outstanding. Two favorites of mine are the biscuits & gravy and the RD burger. They are both full of flavor and delicious. I have a hard time ordering anything else because I just want to order one of those every single time. The crispy zucchini fries are so good that they never last that long on the table because everyone eats them immediately. I've also had a few of their salads and toasts which were all fantastic. You can't go wrong with anything you order. They also have a stable of great drinks but also seasonal ones that are amazing. I had the ecto cooler around Halloween that was bright green with a stay puft marshmallow rim that was so tasty and people around me kept asking what it was and ordering their own. Stopped in at the bar on a Monday night with my wife and we were the only ones there. The kitchen help were sitting around and looked bored as did the bartender. The space was beautiful and cozy. My wife, an interior designer loved the look and immediately followed them on Instagram. We were wondering if there were any happy hour specials and asked the bartender as it wasn't advertised anywhere and indeed there was. $5 wines and draft beer which included a delicious cider which I tried and my wife selected a bourbon based cocktail created with ginger, carrot juice ($14) and some other ingredients I can't recall. It was delicious. The bartender gave us some history of the building and the restaurant and we learned from their website that he was a former pasty chef at Michelin 3-star rated restaurant is Chicago (impressive!). He also told us that on Friday the chef goes to the Union Square Market in NYC, chooses fresh ingredients and invents a unique vegetarian seasonal menu by 3PM that day. Based on the atmosphere, cocktails, and the menu I'm giving them 4 stars which I'm anticipating will be upgraded to 5 when we go back for dinner. read more

My most recent visit to The Kitchen Step really wowed me. The last time I came in for dinner wasn't long after they had opened. Since then I feel like the menu has really evolved. I'm definitely looking forward to returning more frequently, and especially want to try out brunch since I've only been in for dinner. Happy hour is til 6 (I think) and you can take full advantage of that if you are seated at a table. A lot of spots only offer happy hour at the bar, and I always love when there is the option to enjoy while seated. The complimentary bread and butter is to die for... the butter is herby and truffley and topped with sea salt. Don't fill up on that though! You'll surely want to leave room for more. Two of us shared two small plates and one entree and that was more than enough food. Portions are generous. The kale Cesar salad was divvied up into two cute portions. I'm a really big fan of sharing and having the portion split into two. The salad was topped with candied nuts and aged gouda cheese which was oh so good. The octopus was so fresh and tender and had lots of smashed potatoes and tangy aioli and a tropical slaw. The duck gnocchi was super hearty and topped with lots of delicious braised duck, mushrooms and fresh parm. All in all this was a very enjoyable meal. I'll definitely be back again soon. read more

Kudos to the staff and the chef at Kitchen Step. This was our first night out in a long time with our "pod" friends to celebrate a birthday. Glad we found a place that had these cool private greenhouses outside of the restaurant, very similar to the igloos people see online at other establishments. When we arrived, our greens house was ready and clean. We have a two hour limit in the greenhouse which was perfect enough to enjoy some drinks, eat and not feel rushed to leave. The restaurant has countless menus which is great. They offered blankets on each seat in case you get cold but we actually got super hot and needed to turn off the heater for a few minutes and open the door. Our waitress was really patient with us and super nice. She also gave us different options for drinks that was not on the menu for instance, they have a polar plunge drink that was vodka, lime, Brut and menthol. I'm not a fan of menthol so she informed the mixologist that I would like something with citrus and vodka. The drink that I had was spectacular. It was bubbly and had a hint of citrus to it. My guy was a bit disappointed because the Ghosthawk beer IPA got taped out but he said the food made up for it. We ordered a bunch of apps, the broiled oysters had a spice to it which gave them a kick, the Tuscan wings had a taste of citrus and spice, the Mac/cheese was delicious with bacon and mushrooms I believe, and the ricotta cheese was a party in your mouth. The shrimp and grits I ordered had the best portion of grits and shrimp, some places I've visited, would only give like 3 large shrimp and a big bowl of grits but they were very kind in portioning the grits to the shrimp. My guy and friend loved the burger. Cooked to perfection and our friend said the biscuits to his rib dish tasted like they just came out the oven. Everything was super hot when it came out. The waitress heard it was one of the guys birthdays so she gave us all a glass of champagne on the house to celebrate. We ordered the ricotta doughnuts with strawberry and Nutella dip. Highly recommend this restaurant! I came here for restaurant week so we did the special 3 course meal. This was quite a lot of food! The drinks are also amazing. Although the one I had was a bit odd since it contained a saline foam that was a bit too salty for my taste. The drinks have great names, like Bourbon is cheaper than therapy For my starter I had the duck wings which came with some noodles and an egg. I really liked the wings which were juicy and crisp. For my main course I went with the salmon entree which came with some veggies. This was delicious and perfectly cooked! For me it was too acidic. Some ppl though might not mind that. My partner had the buttermilk baked chicken. I tried & the chicken it was under seasoned. No flavor. I did like that the skin was still on the breast. The mash potatoes were a bit watery as well. The gravy the chicken was sitting in the was delicious tasty. Had an amazing time at Kitchen Step - they have beautiful greenhouses to accommodate for outdoor seating in the wintertime. Each greenhouse has a heater and blankets so you are comfortable during your meal; and a button so you can alert the waiter when you need help. Food was amazing! We ordered the Mac and cheese for starter - super indulgent, tasty, lots of bacon and mushrooms. For entrees, we ordered the short rib grilled cheese and the ricotta gnocchi. WOW. The grilled cheese is smothered with butter, and the chips accompanied with it are amazing and crunchy. The gnocchi, like another reviewer said - little pillows of heaven! My first experience here was for brunch in the summer. The outside set up was so cute, but it's even better in the winter. I recently stopped in for dessert and after dinner drinks with friends and was so surprised to see the greenhouses and multiple fire pits. It was actually all filled so we sat inside. The indoor ambiance is so lovely. It's a little Alice and Wonderland feeling. Tables are socially distance and all COVID protocols are being followed. The dessert menu is stellar. We couldn't decide so we each tried something - the bread pudding, chocolate cake and zeppoles. All three were incredible and have an assortment balanced them out! If you do find street parking - u have 2 hr parking limits unless you own a permit There is an outdoor patio - where we opted to sit since it was a beautiful evening . First time at The Kitchen Step this Sunday. Given the COVID circumstances we are under, we had a lovely time. It was a very hot day to be outdoors, but the staff was very accommodating to our request to wait for a table in the shade. Before we were seated, we watched the staff dutifully sanitize the table and chairs in preparation for us. After being seating, we were quickly greeted by our server, who was lovely and pleasant despite having to hustle around in a mask in the blaring sun. We started off with frozen cocktails, a perfect way to keep cool. Then we ordered the fried zucchini to start. I'm typically used to the zucchini being cut into small sticks for this, but theirs were like fried zoodles. It was certainly a generous portion, but not something I think I would order again. Next, I ordered the crispy fish tacos and the kale Caesar salad - both of which were absolutely delicious and fresh tasting. They also brought over a water bowl for our dog! Here is what we tried from the brunch menu: ricotta toast - great mix of flavors with the dehydrated black olive oil, fresh tomatoes, and cheese. This cozy eatery is branded as a "neighborhood bistro," but come dinner time, The Kitchen Step has the feel of a sophisticated cocktail bar. We had reservations for 7:30pm on a Friday night and arrived on the early side, but were seated promptly. The waitstaff were all super pleasant and helpful with ordering. The owner, Joe, even came around a couple times during our meal--great guy! Not only were the ambiance and service top-notch, the food and cocktails were also unbelievable. I think we tried about 3/4 of the cocktail list during the course of our dinner, and not a single one was bad. For starters, we had the eggplant & manchego empanadas and the short rib poutine. The empanadas were little pockets of yummy gooey-ness and definitely worth a try if you are a fan of eggplant. And the short rib poutine was so flavorful, I would've licked the gravy at the bottom of the dish if it were in any way socially acceptable. My only complaint was that the poutine was served in a cast iron mini loaf pan, which trapped the heat and made the fries mushy. Still delicious, though. For entrees, we had the salmon special and the pomegranate-chili glazed pork chop. The salmon was good, but the pork chop was AMAZING. And this is coming from a person who generally feels pretty meh about pork chops. The portion is HUGE, but somehow, it's still incredibly juicy and flavorful throughout. I so appreciate places that still offer outdoor dining in the winter. This restaurant has outdoor heating and is well decorated so you don't feel like you are missing out in the experience. The food is also excellent. I've already gone back a couple of times and was able to try a butternut squash soup that was a daily special, their burger, Cuban sandwich, Mac and cheese, wings, and monkfish. Nothing disappointed. We were there for brunch yesterday for our friends birthday. She had never been before and I've always had a good experience in the past. The food was phenomenal. However, our server was awful, neglectful, and needed some serious training. It took her almost 15 minutes just to greet us with water, mind you, it was not very busy. Once she took our food and drink order she never came back. The drink I ordered was on the bitter side, and I wanted to try something else. I waited until everyone's meal was almost finished before having to get up and find her myself. I finally got a new drink and all was well, but again she never came back, not to see how the food was, not to ask if we needed anything, just never came back. We were ready for a second round and we were waving trying to get her attention from across the room. It's not a large space, she looked in our direction and almost seemed as if she was too busy in conversation to come over. She FINALLY came over and took our order for a second round. I wanted to hold off on celebrating my recent graduation until outdoor dining in Jersey City began. The first restaurant that came to mind? Kitchen Step, of course. Our first visit here months ago set a high standard and I didn't expect to be wowed again, but they did not disappoint! I just *had* to update my review with pictures of the amazing food. Their seasonal drinks were just as good as they were creative with the names. I had the "Blame it on Baskin" (basically a screwdriver with a twist) while my boyfriend tried the "W.H.O You Gonna Call" to mix things up from his usual summer gin and tonic drink. We started off with the mac and cheese which was delicious, but what I was really excited to have again was their buttermilk chicken. My boyfriend decided to order it too to see what the hype was about. After his first couple bites, he kept nodding his head with approval and ended up finishing the entire dish. The chicken breast they served was huge and perfectly cooked, as expected. It was still just as good as leftovers when heated up the next day. Everything about the experience was great given the circumstances. Our server was very polite, attentive, and even offered wipes to wipe down our credit card after paying. The food is always exceptional and their wine list is phenomenal! Definitely a place to go to here in Jersey City!

WOW - Great location, great food, friendly staff. The little cabins are very cool and the got cleaned after every customer. Staff was wearing masks all the time. We got there a little bit late caused by an accident but were very lucky at our arrival because we got a parking spot right next to the restaurant. We called the restaurant in advance to see how the situation is looking for us and everything worked out. The food was super delicious, great taste and nothing ordinary at all. I came to Kitchen Step to enjoy a nice dinner with friends. They have outdoor seating so given the gorgeous weather it seemed like a good option. Kitchen Step changes their menu seasonally so there is nice variety and the food is super fresh. The restaurant itself is small but chic. We made reservations and were quickly seated outside. We started with a few cocktails which were really good. Some of them were creatively other tables ordered were really creative and came out with sparklers. We split an order of the Korean style angry wings and Mac n cheese. Both were really good! The Mac n cheese came with bacon and wild mushrooms and was super tasty. I ordered the PEI mussels for my entree and was in heaven. The thick white wine sauce and garlic aioli was delicious and having the frites on top to dip in the sauce was clutch! I highly recommend trying it! My friends got the hanger steak and were also happy with their meals. The food was good but I'm giving it four stars because the service was okay. Our first server wasn't friendly and then they switched and the new server never checked in or offered new cocktails. That being said, Kitchen Step is a cute restaurant in JC and is worth checking out. read more
