Never going back - I've been to Kitchen Step in the past and really enjoyed it. What happened to these guys? My evening started with 3 glasses of of wine with the smallest pours I've ever experienced. When I complained to the server, he barely made a gesture, rolled his eyes and walked away. After waiting for him to fix the situation, he continued to serve other tables totally ignoring us. It took a complaint to one of the owners to get it taken care of. Our server finally brings back 3 new normally poured new glasses instead of topping the ones already on our table and removes the original glasses. It would have been a nice gesture to leave the original glasses. Was this a punishment for complaining? What were they going to do with them? I then struggled to find a meal that I wanted on the menu and settled on a mediocre chicken dish. I got home and felt totally ripped off by this terrible experience. LOVE The Kitchen Step! This corner restaurant is cozy, tastefully decorated, and filled with delicious food. The menu changes for the seasons, but I think the bread and butter served with dinner stays the same. The butter is specially made just for the restaurant and I highly advise getting it. We also had the Mac n cheese, shishito peppers, and zucchini fries as apps. They were all amazing. I got the gnocchi as my main course and was not disappointed! We celebrated Father's Day here with a delicious brunch. Started off with mimosas, zucchini fries and the croissant French toast for the table. Seems to be a trend with us, when we want to try something we order for the table so everyone can have a little taste. Everything was delicious! Service was great as well. We dined inside and tables were nice and roomy. We then ordered our mains, the burger and fries, eggs Benedict and pancakes. Everything was delicious and came out rather quickly. I recently ate at this wonderful restaurant with my wife and daughter. The food was fantastic. I had the Black Sea bass and it was cooked perfectly. There was a roasted carrot appetizer that was phenomenal. We also shared the bruschetta with whipped ricotta. The service was great and the ambiance very nice. It doesn't surprise me the owner is also affiliated with Battello. We chose that venue for my daughters wedding and the food there is first class as well! I highly recommend to his spot. read more

The vibe and the mimosa was good but the food was really sub par. We ordered the Egg Benedict, impossible burger and French toast. The egg in Egg Benedict wasn't pouched well and the hollandaise sauce was very runny and it didn't have any truffle in it unlike mentioned in the menu, the burger came with just the patty and some caramelized onions ( no other vegetables - no onions, no tomatoes etc) we asked for some sliced onions and tomatoes and they said they didn't have it . The Kitchen Step is always one of my favorite dining experiences in Jersey City. The food is always excellent and the staff are all very great. We came here again for Valentine's Day and had their prefixed menu. All of the courses were great and the serving size was perfect. Delicious. Neither I nor my friend had ever heard of this place but decided to give it a try because we were in the mood for a Saturday brunch and this place was in the mood to serve us. We left with no regrets. The place is small but tidy with a relatively large outside eating area if you're down for sidewalk dining. The brunch menu is pretty tight, but everything on it (and everything I saw served to the tables around me) looked delicious. The avocado toast was delicious. A simple preparation (avocado, red onion, chives, EVOO, multigrain bread) and I had no complaints. The rest of my order (eggs, bacon, and potatoes) was just as simply prepared and delicious. I must say, the star of my plate; however, was the house-smoked bacon - thick, crispy, and delicious. I also got to munch on the honey mustard glazed chicken wings and they too were simple yet delicious. I appreciate the no-fuss yet delicious food and the service was prompt and friendly. If I ever find myself in Jersey City again, I'm definitely returning to this place. I'd love to taste a lot more of what's on their menu. read more

The Kitchen Step crew have done a good job of creating an attractive restaurant in what is a really awkwardly shaped space. I've eaten here a few times (both brunch and dinner) and while I always enjoy the experience the service can seem a little confused at times. The wait staff are always friendly however. I like the fact that the menu changes fairly frequently and that it reflects different seasonal produce. The menu has a wide range of choices from vegetable plates to burgers and meat and fish dishes. The food is always beautifully plated but the flavour combinations don't always quite work out, sometimes 'less is more' y'know. Drinks wise there's a good selection of wines available by the glass and some interesting craft beers and cocktails. I enjoy some of the small touches here such as complimentary bread and butter for the table but for the love of God please stop presenting the dessert menus in grease-stained Kraft paper envelopes! Prices are a little on the steep side for JC - if you opt for three courses you can easily rack up $50.00 a head before tax, tips and drinks but if you stick to a selection of small plates and appetizers you can eat pretty well for a reasonable price. Overall, I like The Kitchen Step but there are a few things that need a little work to make it a five-star spot. read more

I got the Bloody Mary, it was pretty good except I couldn't quite taste the liquor and it was on the salty side . Ricotta gnocchi is good. It's soft, moist and tasty. If you want to try something unique, check this out. Hangar steak and eggs is not bad, but you need to eat the steak with the sauce. Without it, the steak is a little bland, even though it's cooked nicely. I saw several good reviews of the smashed potatoes that comes with the steak. It's not bad, but not wow. Ok so, this being the little sister restaurant of the fabulous Battello - and it being healthy and delicious and also cute and hipster-y-ish and well decorated, you have to give it the benefit of the doubt. While we didn't have the BEST experience, there were high points and low points, so I'm going to break it down for you that way. Highlights - made a reservation for 8pm and ended up being seated in one of the adorable outdoor greenhouses which were beautiful, sanitized, sensual (great smelling candles), and perfectly heated. I was even able to take off my coat and was wearing a sleeveless dress with a real feel of 20 degrees F outside. They have a great cocktail menu, but my suggestion is order one of their specialties instead of asking them to whip up a different creation (more on that later), a few vegan/vegetarian options - great for me - and exceptional service. Also walked inside to go to the bathroom and tables were extremely secluded and socially distant. This place definitely follows safety protocols. Lows - I asked for a skinny spicy margarita, my signature, instead of going with THEIR signature cold toddy and had to send it back. You'd think a place like this would use freshly muddled jalapeños for a spicy margarita, but I was given one with hot sauce and it was unbearable. We didn't want dessert later so ordered espressos and they had no after dinner aperitifs. We LOVE Sambuca in our Espresso. Were first told they had it, then Waitress came back and said nvm but we do have Frangelica. Then Waitress came back and said nvm nvm nvm. The espresso was tasty though. Food = neither highlight or lowlight. Personally I think I liked it better than Future Husband. The Brussels over a creamy avocado bed are a MUST GET. FH liked his beef tartare but of course I didn't try it. I did try one of the light & airy chips it comes with though and they were great. I asked for the impossible burger over the kale Caesar and Chef was accommodating, BUT it came with onions and melted cheese on top. I don't MIND because most of the time I will eat cheese just to not be difficult if we are out at a restaurant PLUS the kale Caesar came with cheese anyway, but I do think I should've been told that the impossible patty was coming with cheese. I mean, especially if someone is ordering the Impossible patty, at least let them know. It was great though, maybe a little salty for my liking. Came with ketchup too, which was fun to dabble in. Brussels were still the best. Future Husband finished his chicken dish over mashed potatoes and liked it, but said it was nothing special. I do have to agree that Big Sister Battello has way better food, so it's pretty ironic that this place has more stars. (I'm always blown away by the fact that Battello still isn't a 4 star restaurant on Yelp.) Anyway, Kitchen Step is taking Steps in the right direction. I think what got us here is that we didn't come for brunch. As Future Husband - who is without a doubt parked up on the couch every Sunday at 1pm taking his first nap of the day and not at all inclined to ask to go out to brunch - noted, "This is definitely more of a brunch spot." I'm not sure what business he has claiming that because of the aforementioned Sunday agenda, but at least he's taking his own Kitchen Steps toward Yelping like a Future Husband should. read more

This place is one of my favorite places to dine at in JC. The restaurant is nicely decorated, it's small and quaint. The menu offers many changing seasonal items. Every time I return I find a new favorite item I can't stop talking about for weeks. I've dined here many times both brunch and dinner. I have NEVER been disappointed. From the clam chowder to the homemade pasta to the chicken fried broccoli to the homemade brunch scones, the chef never disappoints. The staff is so friendly and professional. They always make me feel so welcomed and at home when I come here. The cocktail menu is amazing! They are so creative and not your ordinary cocktails. These are thoughtfully crafted and even some nice twists on the classics. I always recommend this place to friends and anyone asking for a new place to check out. The menu has something for everyone, your meat eater, your vegetarian, your pescatarian, and even your vegan. Even down to the desserts. So, we tried The Kitchen Step twice (well, technically 3x) now and every time, the staff has been incredibly rude. 1. The bartender nearly ignored us, was so annoyed at our just being there. The mixed drink was blah. He downright through the check at us. 2. The second time we walked in, the staff yet again acted aa though we were interrupting them by walking in the door. Just absolutely rude. 3. On a third occasion I came alone because the outside was set up and I thought I'd have an outdoors drink. I was hoping whoever was rude to us the first two times might not be there again. I didn't realize I was there just before opening, because everything was set up and they were people dining inside. I asked if I could get a drink and sit outdoors, but they rudely said they were closed -- despite having numerous people inside eating. Maybe it was the staff having a pre-shift dinner? We revisited here bc we've amazed by great quality of brunch dishes and coffee a few months ago. This morning was a huge disappointment.. We had a breakfast burger and smoked salmon Benedict. The burger was OK-nothing really special- the meat was a bit dry, one little strip of bacon.. it's fine but the french fries came in the napkin container. My partner said the salad in the Benedict dish was not fresh. I could see some of greens are saggy. Oh almost forget to mention the salmon. There was can salmon dices instead of smoked salmon. Atmosphere 4/5 Came here for a friends birthday dinner. It's a rather small restaurant, it is very long but a narrow building. This tends to get a bit crowded because of spacing. The decor was super cute! There's multiple canvases of a tree and leaves across the ceiling, and the green seats were beautiful! The bar was pretty cool to look at also! Service 5/5 Our server was amazing, she was there every time we needed a question answered or a refill. Food came out quick, and everyone was really satisfied by the end of the meal. Food 4/5 The food was pretty good, the drinks were definitely the best part. Their mixologist is on point with his creations. We started with the zucchini fries and the roasted roots. The zucchini fries were some of the best I've ever had! Fried perfectly. The roots dish was okay, some of them I liked and others I was a bit unsure of. I got the celery root tagliatelle, I honestly don't know if I would get this dish again. I was excited to try the mushroom "bolognese ", but it wasn't really what I was expecting. I thought the mushrooms would be a meat replacement in a red sauce but it was more just ground up mushrooms with oil. The noodles were a bit too large and the celery flavor was super over powering. I was very psyched to try spot after all the rave reviews and best of lists. It is on the pricey side so I was waiting for a special occasion to try this neighborhood spot. We decided to try the NYE prix fix ($65) menu to see if the place lived up to the hype. They posted the menu online so I was glad to preselect my dinner before I was even seated. Ambiance is cozy, warm, and inviting. Service attentive and helpful and we were quickly seated. Excellent bread and sweet butter to start the dinner off. I tried the wild mushroom truffle soup which was rich, creamy, and decadent. You won't be able to finish it due to the richness but absolutely delicious. I got the filet which was a satisfying, well cooked, and tender piece of meat w/sauteed spinach and polenta fries (which were sort of too hard and not overly appetizing). I was too stuffed to continue but when I tried my desert - I had to keep eating! The zeppolles were soft, flakey, flavorful, and amazing. I also got the wine paring for $25 which came w/a healthy pour of all 3 wines. The first two reds were excellent compliments though I would have preferred a less sweet desert wine for my third glas. Now why the 2 stars? I felt sick a few minutes after leaving and think I may have gotten food poisoning from the meal. This has become a brunch staple for me! The menu changes all the time but it's always so good. Some of my favorites have been the brunch burger with the runny egg, the cornbread, croissant French toast and the delicious chicken and waffles with sriracha syrup! The cocktails aren't to be missed! I always get the Mildred and try a new cocktail. During the winter they had an incredible iced version of a hot toddy that was remarkable!! I still hope they bring back this incredible dish they had for a weekend in December with a beautiful piece of grilled bread served with a thinly sliced duck or lamb (treated almost like roast beef) and served with a fried egg and this incredible green sauce...which they need to add more of. Excellent food, drinks and service! We sat in the Greenhouse for dinner and it was a great experience. It was perfect for a romantic dinner for two. We had the Mac n cheese and crispy Brussels as an appetizer and we were blown away by both. The Mac was cheesy and also had a good crunch from the breadcrumbs and bacon. The Brussels were so crispy and were over a bed of mashed avocados and it was the perfect bite. For entrees we got the shrimp and grits and buttermilk chicken and everything was perfect. Speaking for the buttermilk chicken it was nice and moist and came over mashed potato's. It was a good satisfying entree. We decided we wanted to order the flourless chocolate cake with marshmallow and it was out of this world. This place was cool. We were initially suppose to go to "Just Beclaws" but after being told they were completely booked, we decided to come here. Upon walking in, we immediately noticed the seating outside and decided to sit outside since it was such a beautiful evening. The chairs outside were extremely UNCOMFORTABLE which is one of the reasons I gave this place 3 stars instead of 5. Additionally, the lighting where we were seated was horrible as well since we came at night. We had to use our cellphones to view the menu. As for food, I got the black angus burger and herb fries and my homegirl got the shrimp tacos and salad with Gouda cheese off the small plates menu . The salad was actually really good! The burger was good however I didn't finish it because I don't typically eat burgers (wanted to try something different). The fries were bland. Overall, I would come here for brunch because the menu looked very tasty- not so sure l would come for dinner again. I always love when I find what I consider hidden gems. First, let's start with the employees. They are extremely caring, warm, & welcoming. They easily and happily accommodated the party I was with for a birthday. Their hospitality made me forget we were in the middle of a pandemic and just allowed me to enjoy the space I was in. I ordered the Croissant French Toast and it was absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection; seriously. For my drink I ordered the Pear Necessities and it was the best drink I've had in a long time. If I had a great aunt Mary this is what her house would look like. The decor is straight out of Pinterest, classic and rustic all at the same time - an IGers dream. The indoor seating features a long pea green booth with various table sizes. There are gold painted scrolls on the walls and grassy walls with different sizes of mirrors. There is a large painting that lines the ceiling to conceal huge any unsightly pipes or plain walls. They have a pretty traditional menu but what stood out to me was the ricotta gnocchi. Pasta for breakfast? Yes please! The gnocchi is light and fluffy, swirled in a light butter sauce topped with well seasoned mushrooms and greens. It was the perfect combination of solid and creamy covered with a light sauce and salted mushrooms to pull the dish together. I also ordered Smashed potatoes. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but was happily surprised by the fingerling potatoes that were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and well seasoned. They are kid friendly for the most part, they have high chairs and kid cups with big straws but no kids menu. I attempted to feed my daughter the avocado toast that she unfortunately wanted to part of - she preferred her dads bacon. Go figure. Anyway it was simple and delicious, mashed avocado with some pickled red onions, micro greens and large kernels of sea salt to top off. I can see why this restaurant is a JC staple: fresh and familiar meals with a fun twist. I had shrimp n grits with Chinese sausage and I loved the gravy that came with it and a nice switch up from the traditional southern style of shrimp n grits. We also ate the fried zucchini which I couldn't get a picture of because we devoured it. Can't forget to mention the seasonal cocktails, they were creative and really flavorful. I didn't love how close the tables are to each other - even if it was pre covid they're so close you're basically eating dinner with all the parties nearby. This restaurant is hands down one of my favorite places in jersey city to go for brunch. I have eaten here several times and have not been disappointed by a single dish I've tried. Service is also very good and the staff is very friendly. My favorite dishes for brunch are: Hanger steak and eggs Breakfast burrito And the Nutella swirl pancake (best pancake you'll ever have) It's a little pricey but worth every penny for the quantity and quality of all their dishes. Last time I went we ordered all three of those dishes along with toast on the side and 2 coffees for total cost of around $60 before tip. I'd definitely recommend this place for a nice cozy brunch date. The place is small but has a decent amount of seating and has a very nice modern design to it. My husband and I are fan of the Kitchen Step. We discovered this cute bistrot a couple of months after moving to JC, around January and we have been waiting for them to open up outdoor seating to go again. When we tried it the first time, we were so wowed by some items on their menu (Mac&Cheese, zucchini fries, pork knuckle, tacos) as well as their fun Cocktails (the bar tender is I N C R E D I B L E ) that I couldn't wait to go back. They have set up outdoor dining in a very cozy way, with faux green grass and many hanging lights that create a fine ambience. The service is good and fairly attentive. The food is incredible - they definitely confirmed once more that we should go back often. One thing happened the other night in particular that left me positively impressed; we had ordered pork chop and hangar beef, and I believe something happened in the process that they didn't turn out the way they should have hence they decided to re-make them (without bringing them to us). Came here on a weekday after knowing razza has a 30 minutes wait at 8:30pm. We were seated immediately insides (they have tables outside the restaurant). Good: - service: our wait staff was friendly and attentive. - buttermilk chicken breast: moist and the sauce was delicious. OK - gnocchi: the gnocchi themselves were delicious with great texture.
