Wow! I really didn't expect to have such great food in Kansas. We had a group dinner here and everyone loved the food. Favorites were the asian bowl, the chicken piccata, the creamy spinach pasta, and the whiskey beef stroganoff. Kudos to Kalee and Ryan for being such great servers. One comment - the food is on the saltier side, so if you don't like salt, please let them know. They are part of the gold cap card, so if you're staying at a hotel that offers you this card (Hotel at Waterwalk does), then you'll get 10% off your meal. Downtown in an old train station building so it's a cute old building with decent sized dining room. We ordered a grilled cheese and a Turkey Brie Panini with French onion soup. Both sandwiches had an odd mayo like sauce that was not quite flavorless but not quiet not and neither of us were fans. The French onion was good. Kettle chips were tasty. Our waitress was excellent. Neither of us were really impressed but was decent. Looks like from other reviews the dinner options are much better so I'm sure it was just our choices that were so so options. We ate here after it was recommended by a local. We were a bit concerned about menu choices as we arrived and they were closing in less than an hour but it was not an issue. We started with the fried veggies. They were lightly breaded and seasoned. I had the vegan flatbread and it was very flavorful. Tangy and sweet on a super thin crisp bread. The menu said it was perfect for sharing but not this time. My husband had a chicken sandwich and said it was cooked well. The fries seemed really salty but I think it was the seasoning. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. When we were seated and greeted our waitress introduced herself and two others and said they all work together. First time to come here. It was early(6pm) and we had a wait of about 30-35 min. The wait was worth it! The menu is unique and the portions are perfect. We had the stroganoff and an Italian bowl. Both were flavorful and delightful. I also ordered the Limey Moscow Mule. It was light and was a fresh drink that didn't weigh down the meal. You must leave room for dessert! We had the lemon curd cake and it did not disappoint. Perfect amount of tart and sweet. Wish I would have taken pics, but was too excited to dive right in! The atmosphere was great too. Not a large place, so a bit quieter than normal which was nice. The staff was amazing and explained all questions we had about food and drink. Friendly, but not overbearing. This is my second time at The Kitchen, once for a business meeting and this time on my lonesome. Each time I've only sat out on the patio because it's been such beautiful days, beware though if you want to sit out because there is no shade so that sun will be hitting pretty hard if it's out. I had the Ham and Cheese on this trip because I wasn't wanting anything too fancy and to be honest I was feeling kind of frugal. I was little hesitant because I never get ham and cheese out at restaurants because it's one of those things that if I can make it home why order it elsewhere, but the server vouched for it and said it was worth it. The sandwich was... Good not great though. I think I was just expecting a bit more flavor than I got from the sandwich. whenever I think hot ham and cheese I think runny American cheese and with two slabs of hot ham with it, what I got was a bit more of a milder version of that with I believe it was provolone cheese. It got the job done. While they did not quite meet my expectations it was still a very tasty lunch, I'm looking forward to trying The Kitchen again and picking something a bit more adventurous. read more

Nice little place just off of Douglass in downtown Wichita. The service was top notch, waiter was very informative. I asked and was told the most popular item is the Thai Bowl, so I went with it. It was excellent with plenty of flavor, 5 stars. She had the Cajun Pasta w/chicken, she gave it 4 stars because she said it was a little bland for cajun style, said it needed more cajun heat. Portion size on hers was adequate but for myself with the Thai Bowl, it could've been more. We also thought it was just a bit pricey for what it was... just a bit, realizing inflation is sky high but still.... So we took off one star because of the that and the Cajun Pasta. So we planned to just go downtown because of needing something different and we had house-itus. With no expectations, we wanted to stroll around Union Station to see what was happening. Plenty of parking and we found this quaint little joint called The Kitchen. First impressions was like when you were at grandma's house - eating in the kitchen! Very cool, loud as my grandma's kitchen and fortunately - the food was just as good as you can get! This isn't a sport jacket place, but the food tasted better than we've purchased in high-end Plaza restaurants in KC. I had the Whiskey Beef Stroganoff, my wife had the Chicken-Spinach flatbread. For an appetizer we enjoyed the Fried Zucchini followed with a couple of side salads. Dandy flavors already! So this place has "team servers", shared tips and nothing but smiles from everyone, even the kitchen team upon arrival and leaving. You really couldn't tell the front of house manager, because everyone assumed the role. It was very refreshing and we felt like we knew a little about each of them when we were finished. A couple of large groups we're having a great time and the unique and open seating made is cozy. Wichita has an abundance of really great restaurants. We like to seek family/privately owned, unique and well managed spots. We found it and feel you should too! Right down to the blueberry/pomegranate featured tea and my wife's tart spiked lemonade that was so unique, mild, tart and fruity! This place made our day. Our experience was over the top and the staff proved you can get top performers in a very tight market. Yelpers, it's your loss if you pass this gem up. You've been told! Have a great time. My partner got a sandwich with chips and the chips tasted like nothing. What we got- a cup of soup, side salad with chicken, a bowl and sandwich- was $60. I also got a lavender lemonade, and it was $8. not realizing they charged us for two of them, and I'm not sure if it included refills. They came around and topped it off without asking, so I'm not sure. Also, the entire time, there were two employees in the kitchen staring at me quite literally the whole time making me uncomfortable and self conscious the longer it went on. I broke a personal rule of not ordering chicken from a restaurant but went with the chicken piccata base on the staffs recommendation; it came over a bed of penne in a white wine sauce with asparagus on the side. I was craving a spicy chicken sandwich and was quite pleased with my Nashville Hot Sandwich with not-too-hot sauce, pickles and added avocado slices (extra, perfect!) while my other had the spicy burger with onions and peppers. This was a very disappointing visit to a restaurant that I had loved visiting previously. We stood at the door waiting for some type of greeting and we were ignored by three staff members. The restaurant is small and there is no excuse for the lack of a simple greeting. We went and sat down as there was not a hostess or a sign to indicate what you should do. As soon as we sat down immediately a server came to tell us we could not sit there as a larger party was waiting. I struggled deciding to write this review and finally decided that it might have helped my decision to come here, and decided to go ahead and give it a go. My SO and I prefer local places wherever possible so when we were craving some lunch we decided to stop in and see how good this place was! We started with the fried veggies appetizer which was pretty great, the ranch was yummy and the batter was perfect. I had wanted a quinoa salad and was disappointed that not only does it have onions in it, it wasn't listed on the menu. I chose to get the special that day which was grilled cheese and tomato bisque. The best part of this comfort food is even if your grilled cheese isn't fancy, if your bisque is good, it doesn't matter. In fact, this is my go-to dish at another lunch spot in town. Unfortunately, not only do I make a better grilled cheese at home for less money, the soup served wasn't bisque at all. It was basically tomato sauce, very little seasoning, and no cream whatsoever. Look, I'm sure some of their other food is great. But if you can't make a bomb grilled cheese, don't put it on your menu for adults, and if you can't properly call your soup what it is, I'm not interested in a second shot. It ended up being an overpriced meal for an underwhelming performance. read more
