The owner/manager was at the host station, was very friendly/welcoming and was a good start. It looked like there were several new-hire high school students that were getting trained (at the same time). While friendly, it was a bit much at times (witnessing). The deck was full, so we opted to sit inside, which was probably half-full. We were seated next to the waiter order station, which meant we constantly had activity right next to us (reference comment about new trainees above). Had I known the table would have been busy-by-proximity, I would have asked to sit elsewhere. There were lots of different options on the menu (mostly focused on seafood, like one should expect). I found myself struggling to find an entree that jumped out at me, as most had one thing that made it sounds less personally appealing. Such as the shrimp ravioli... if the ravioli itself wasn't standard-cheese, I probably would have ordered that. The casserole that had was in fish-broth with olives. I ended up ordering the seafood festival. The waitress asked if I wanted red or white sauce, and I asked if I could just have butter garlic, and she said "so white sauce", and I retorted "if your white sauce is only butter and garlic, then yes." I'm not a fan of pasta swimming in watery broth... unfortunately that's what it ended up being. My wife ordered the chicken al fresco, and it also was a pool of broth, killing any flavor the dish may have had. Our appetizers were fine (hummus & stuffies), as was dessert (strawberry shortcake). We had a celebratory dinner at The Landing this past Thursday evening Aug 18th. Our son proposed to his now fiancé on his sail boat as they sailed up from Boston Harbor. He moored his boat near the restaurant and our families met them on the dock when they came in. I provided some simple decoration in advance and the restaurant put together a beautiful table!! The Landing's food is outstanding. I frequently order the "Arugula Salad with Steak cooked Pittsburg style". I have never been disappointed. Crispy blackened outside with a magical rub that is scrumptious, & the inside always done to perfection. The avocado in the salad is always fresh, as are the pine nuts, arugula, and shaved parmesan. Simply delicious. What is equally as wonderful as the food, is the staff. Manager Robert Simonelli & assistant manager Junior, as well as Sue... set the tone in making The Landing the welcoming place that it is. The Wait Staff is so extremely accommodating and cheerful. The Landing experience has been transformed ever since the new chef and new menu were introduced. It still has the local feel and friendly staff. However the atmosphere is much more inviting and the food is delicious! Green beans, salmon, bass, burger, cauliflower steak, arugula saIad, BLT salad.. we have had it all. It is all yummy..and all fresh. The Landing is now our once a week go to dinner place. There is always a diverse group of people ranging from families with children to older couples both locals and tourists. The common theme is everyone feels welcomed and is having a great time. Ordered from the menu, they brought the wrong sides. When I asked about what happened to the items mentioned on the menu, I was told the waiter gave me the healthy choice by mistake. BS. The manager went to get me the sides that are supposed to come with my meal and returned to tell me that the kitchen was out of those specific items. So they charge $34 for a meal and bring you what they desire. Manger offered me a free dessert that I didn't want but did nothing to fix the problem. Terrible service. read more

my three friends and I had lunch at the Landing this afternoon. the food was good. I had fish and chips. the others had a salad, chowder and the haddock sandwich. everyone enjoyed their meal. my concern is that the waitress did not reveal to us that they had a second menu of less expensive meals such as sandwiches etc. the menu they gave us had dinner food and dinner prices. once I asked she said oh yes we do have sandwiches. the other thing that was offensive was an older waiter came to our table to say something inane about Ziegfeld. it was a joke I assume as we are all n our 70's. but it felt very offensive.. we won't be back. read more

My dad and I wandered over here after exploring the area near the inn where we were staying. Seeing how near to the water this place was, we decided it was as good of a place as any to stop in for a bite and admire the view. It was an okay experience. I got a cup of clam chowder ($6) to start, as a tourist does when they are in Massachusetts. It was pretty good. It came out hot and had lots of nice, big chunks in it, which is always a plus. It was everything you'd expect a chowder to be. I also got fish and chips ($18), which was pretty good. The fries and fish could have been crispier, but they were okay. The service was really, really slow. Which would have been one thing if they were crowded, but they were almost empty. It felt like we were in there alone. It also felt a bit weird. Not that we weren't welcome, but that we were new perhaps? There was a group of men at the bar who were rather clique-ish and kept looking over at us. It was a bit uncomfortable. The Landing is a piece of Marblehead not to be missed. Located at the public landing in town, it is perfect for people watching and boat watching. The food is outstanding. An eclectic menu featuring many options and highlighted by locally-caught fish and sea food enhanced by a wine list one would expect only from a larger establishment. The lobster roll and swordfish club have become our particular favorites. The lobster mac and cheese is amazing, plenty of lobster, but be forewarned, it's a big dish and will fill you up! PREVIOUS REVIEW: I so used to love The Landing, we would look forward to going at least once a week. We used to request a really great waiter named Felix when we would go. We heard they reopened and as a birthday present I was taken there for dinner tonight. We wanted to go early and still catch the fireworks in Swampscott... Well tonight was a total disaster... They say the difference between a good meal and a great meal is the service. Tonight, the service made a great meal a horrible one... not one thing went right. We waited for a table despite there being 8 open. We waited for menus, then we waited for a waiter to take a drink order... he showed up and then disappeared for 10 minutes only to come back to tell us the beer we wanted wasn't available... so we made another selection and waited again... Our waiter was a train wreck. His pupils were as tiny as pin heads and he looked and acted high... he had 4 inch manicured finger nails and had on too much jewelry... just not appropriate. He didn't know the specials, said they were on a printed sheet we did t get... He finally brought our beers and we immediately ordered back ups... he was annoyed by this... We waited again for him to come back so we could place our order and finally flagged down a bus boy to ask him to have the waiter come over... He took our order... but never picked up the menus and we waited... we ordered appetizers (oyster shooters and the pork dumplings) they never arrived... Our burgers finally showed up 46 minutes after walking in the door... but our apps didn't.... neither did our silverware... we needed to steal it off another table... despite that the burgers were good... but it was overall just annoying... for 10 years I earned my living as a waiter.. and I made a damn good living... this guy is gonna starve! While we waited we witnessed the table next to us be accidentally cleared as the people went for a smoke... they told the waiter, but he didn't communicate it and they cleared the people's drinks and thought the woman forgot her hand bag.... when they came back, no apology... no nothing and these poor people got an attitude because they wanted their fresh drinks replaced.... As we are halfway through our burgers, the food runner brings over some sort of chicken roll up and said it was our appetizer... we didn't order it... nor did we want it... and were met with equal annoyance when we asked them to take it back to the kitchen. We finished our burgers... washed them down with our beers and waited another 15 minutes for our check, which only arrived and I gestured to the waiter with a scribbling motion... Service can make or brake a place... and this guy will ruin the reputation of one of our beloved spots... his appearance, indifference and apparent drug use is such a poor reflection on this beloved local spot. Update: I have now had dinner here 3x (we can't stop coming back). I had the Tuna Piccata (delicious) and the Seafood Festival (awesome). They brought out Key Lime Pie with a candle for my birthday. Our waiter looked a little like Zac Efron and carded me on my 32nd birthday...he gets props for both those things. The Key Lime Pie was tart and refreshing. They also have mug clubs for beer and wine and also a Dark'n'Stormy club (drink 8 - please not all at once - and get 1 free). OR you can join the Captain's Club and get bigger pours on all the aforementioned drinks! The Pub pro-rates the entrance fee so you can get in for basically half the cost for the rest of the year. I would give The Landing 2.5 stars, if possible. We ate in the bar area on a quiet Sunday night. Service was attentive & friendly. The lobster mac n' cheese was really good, as were the fries. But the chicken sandwich was just awful, especially because there was some sweet sauce on it that was not supposed to be there. If i could give no stars I would. Came here on a Sunday and it wasn't that busy. Got seated right away by the hostess. Given our menus to look over. Waited about 10minutes and no one ever came over to offer us water/drinks. During that time another woman who was waiting for a party of 3 was seated in front of us and within 2mins she had waters brought to her and her guest (who weren't even there). 2 mins after she even had a coffee brought to her. Waiters came into the area only to check on the tables they were already serving and not even acknowledging us. Even had one waiter just staring at the boats on harbor. Honestly the vibe I got was that they don't normally see people of color in their neck of the woods. We ended up walking out after 15mins of sitting there in amazement of the poor service. This place is quite dainty with dock side seats. They have bar area and high tops also low tops. However on an 88 degree weather day I wished they had turned on their ac, so I could enjoy my clam chowder without ssweat going down my neck. Their clam chowder was delicious, big cuts of clams and bacon to add the smokiness to the chowder. Calamari was fry properly, soft and the tentacles were crunchy. Their fish and chips were delicious. You get three big strips of fish cooked in a beer batter. Fish was cooked properly,flakey and juicy. You don't need tar tar sauce for this. However a hint of squeezed lemon would be perfect! Their fries are good and well seasoned with chopped up parsley as a garnish. Cole slaw was good, they have gherkin pickles into the mix, a bit watery. But I could just eat that as a snack. Overall a great little spot to have lunch , parking is a bit tricky though. read more

We stayed in Marblehead at a local B&B and the recommended this place for its location. Yes, it has a view of the harbor but also the working parking lot where they offload lobster boats and have cranes to lift boats. Nice but not spectacular. I liked the fact the had heaters to enjoy the deck on the cooler days/nights but they really needed two more to make every seat at least a bit warmer. A big plus, very pleasant service staff. Go for a kick-back meal not a a top notch dining event. Don' be in rush. read more

I can't believe today was the first time I've been to the landing! Hubby and I had the day off and it was beautiful out and we wanted somewhere different (read not in Salem) and on the water so we decided to go here. The deck is adorable, and I loved watching the fishing boats coming in. They have a decent selection of beers on tap including a few locals (Ipswich, Long trail). For lunch, I got a sandwich called the "Big Kahuna'. It was a seafood burger- Scallops, lobster and shrimp, breaded and seared on a bun. it came with a fresh pickle (yum) and seasoned fries. Love the food! Great chef! We were in Marblehead for 5 days. 2 dinners and 4 lunches at The Landing! food is consistent. Due to chef being on a TV chef challenge (and winning) staff was a tad forgetful during lunch crush, but that is understandable. We went for early lunch and service was super. Want this place to succeed so am giving it an extra star. Went many times with different people before reviewing. Have had 2 5 star dishes: arugula salad with grilled chicken and the chicken entree. However, the side dishes that came with the chicken were inedible. Ravioli dish was a 4 star. All salads were barely 3 star and overpriced on another visit. Steak was barely 3 stars- meat tough. Duck only 3 stars. Side dishes inedible with both entrees. Consistency is an issue and include good side dishes rather than making us order them at the prices you're charging for the entrees.
