The guy in the leather 'cage' downstairs is very helpful and friendly. Gives suggestions and offers a plethora of knowledge. Sadly I can't say the same for the coworker at the counter. They/She is dismissive and unhelpful and doesn't seem to care you're there. It's just a weird vibe she puts off. She/They would rather be standoffish than engaging. I watched the interaction with other customers and realized it wasn't just me. At first I gave leeway to that fact that we all have bad days; so thought I'd check the yelp reviews and discovered it wasn't just me. Fortunately the guy in the cage notices this and gets you back on track; if not, seek him out. The counter employee isn't enough to keep me away from the shop, it truly is a landmark with great products. I'd just rotate that persons work position because their customer interaction skills are bad. Cashier guy is also friendly and nice! It may be intimidating to go into a place like that if you're a casual shopper for their stuff, but if you ask the questions you'll find what you're looking for. Upstairs, the boys were initially guarded but soon revealed themselves to be charming, helpful, and lovely company. Then I ventured downstairs. Reader, I was unprepared. Stationed below was what can only be described as a foul-tempered cryptid of retail legend: part bridge troll, part dungeon goblin, part tax auditor cursed by a leather witch. A creature so committed to hostility that one wondered if speaking caused it physical pain. It communicated mainly through glowers, sighs, and the kind of energy that makes houseplants wilt. The shelves were overstuffed, the glass cases looked as though they'd lost a bar fight, and the artisans sewing away did so in a silence so grim it felt monastic. This is not the Leatherman many of us know and adore. The place still has heart--but somewhere in the basement, a snarling mythical beast is guarding the gate and scaring the villagers. I love that this old school gay leather shop has been around for 60 some years. It has an incredible selection of everything you could possibly want, from jockstraps to lube to harnesses. The people are very friendly and happy to answer any questions. My only complaint is that they use gigantic Price stickers that do not come off of the products. If you're going to use stickers for price tags, make sure that they actually come off easily. I spent five minutes trying to peel off the sticker and it just will not come off. If you're a fan of leather clothing for fetish wear, you will truly adore this place. The whole Christopher St area has gentrified a lot; this has its good and bad sides, but overall the neighborhood is lovely and you can easily make a whole morning if enjoying a trip here. The people who work here are pretty rude. I wasn't greeted or helped until I was told to check my bag in the nonexistent bag check. I'm not sure what the issue with me was but they were more than willing to be polite and greet others. I was looking for a particular item and when I did ask for it there was some engagement... Reluctant engagement. Both of the young men who work there seemed bothered by my presence so I left without anything. With regards to toys the supply is limited and pretty much what you can find at any shop in town. The same goes for lubricant and other personal items. There really is no reason to go out of your way to come here unless you need leather goods and even that's a stretch. Max was so amazing (and hot!) and he helped me pick the right harness for my body type. Let me just say I don't always feel 100 percent comfortable about my body and I don't have the stereotypical gay male body but Max made me feel confident. He helped me feel comfortable putting it on and made sure it fit perfectly. He tried several of them on me before finding the perfect one. That level of personalized service is hard to find in a retail environment these days but you will definitely get it here and I will definitely be back. I'm a small guy with small arms, and I wanted to get some leather arm bands like swoll guys wear to feel sexy and okay in my own body. This type of body positivity is obviously not standard at Leather Man. When being fitted, the person fitting looked discredulously at me and asked "do you even exercise?" I tried to say yes, I do yoga regularly, but he dismissed me to flex and say I needed to lift. Then, he told me the problem with the fitting wasn't their fitting but the fact I didn't have arms like the man who pointed again at his biceps. "The problem is you don't have arms like these". I tried to say "no, the problem is your shit attitude," but at that point I felt 0% attractive, even with the salesman trying to flirt with me to cheer me up. I got the hell out of there, and don't want to come back. The world is too obsessed with big, muscular guys, but leather is supposed to be about accepting everyone, not belittling people. I have contacted them over 10 times, including several calls to the managers. I always get promises that customer service is their forte'. After reading the many reviews, it seems that lots of people seem to have a bad experience at The Leather Man shop. It's even crazier reading about AJ. AJ actually helped me create my vision that was in my head for my boyfriend's Christmas gift. He executed, conquered and succeeded what I needed to be done! My boyfriend is an officer and he wanted to keep using his Louis Vuitton wallet with his badge, but LV doesn't make custom badge wallets... nor badge holders. So this is where my creative juices started to flow. I pulled a couple of designs from the internet, went to LV to check out the wallets. I scoped out Google for leather shops that make custom pieces. I called the leather man, and they referred me to AJ - who works with custom orders. The same day I headed over to the leather man, and noticed that this wasn't your average leather shop. Definitely a sex shop and it definitely has the vibe where gaymen come in and look for toys to play with. Hey! That's fine by me, I don't care. I thought the items they had in there were cool and AJ was a sweetheart. Talking to me, and showing me the different types of leather he works with. He came up with a few sketches, and then proceeded to show me how he will make it happen with the leather. He even measured the wallet, and made sure that the badge holder will fit. In like a couple of days, my custom order was ready - $40 and comes with warranty if any thing happens to it! It fit perfectly in the LV wallet & had a nice look to it also.
