I love that this old school gay leather shop has been around for 60 some years. It has an incredible selection of everything you could possibly want, from jockstraps to lube to harnesses. The people are very friendly and happy to answer any questions. My only complaint is that they use gigantic Price stickers that do not come off of the products. If you're going to use stickers for price tags, make sure that they actually come off easily. I spent five minutes trying to peel off the sticker and it just will not come off. The people who work here are pretty rude. I wasn't greeted or helped until I was told to check my bag in the nonexistent bag check. I'm not sure what the issue with me was but they were more than willing to be polite and greet others. I was looking for a particular item and when I did ask for it there was some engagement... Reluctant engagement. Both of the young men who work there seemed bothered by my presence so I left without anything. With regards to toys the supply is limited and pretty much what you can find at any shop in town. The same goes for lubricant and other personal items. There really is no reason to go out of your way to come here unless you need leather goods and even that's a stretch. I have visited this delightful shop a couple times now. It's a perfect place to pick up quality toys for impact play. Toys are downstairs. If you're a fan of leather clothing for fetish wear, you will truly adore this place. Be aware that, in keeping with its legacy as a bastion for gay men, the clothing is mostly for male-bodied people. The whole Christopher St area has gentrified a lot; this has its good and bad sides, but overall the neighborhood is lovely and you can easily make a whole morning if enjoying a trip here. Max was so amazing (and hot!) and he helped me pick the right harness for my body type. Let me just say I don't always feel 100 percent comfortable about my body and I don't have the stereotypical gay male body but Max made me feel confident. He helped me feel comfortable putting it on and made sure it fit perfectly. He tried several of them on me before finding the perfect one. That level of personalized service is hard to find in a retail environment these days but you will definitely get it here and I will definitely be back. Fantastic selection of high quality goods. So many styles to choose from. They allowed me to try on in the store and model for my BF. They allowed my BF to sit down while I went back and forth to the fitting rooms for different outfits. Very knowledgeable staff. They do free alterations on site for anything you buy. I'm a small guy with small arms, and I wanted to get some leather arm bands like swoll guys wear to feel sexy and okay in my own body. This type of body positivity is obviously not standard at Leather Man. When being fitted, the person fitting looked discredulously at me and asked "do you even exercise?" I tried to say yes, I do yoga regularly, but he dismissed me to flex and say I needed to lift. Then, he told me the problem with the fitting wasn't their fitting but the fact I didn't have arms like the man who pointed again at his biceps. "The problem is you don't have arms like these". I tried to say "no, the problem is your shit attitude," but at that point I felt 0% attractive, even with the salesman trying to flirt with me to cheer me up. I got the hell out of there, and don't want to come back. The world is too obsessed with big, muscular guys, but leather is supposed to be about accepting everyone, not belittling people. I've been a regular for seven years, but this will be the last straw without an apology. read more

I have contacted them over 10 times, including several calls to the managers. I always get promises that customer service is their forte'. I am calling the NYC and Chicago Attorneys Generals to have them investigate and force them to refund the money. After reading the many reviews, it seems that lots of people seem to have a bad experience at The Leather Man shop. It's even crazier reading about AJ. AJ actually helped me create my vision that was in my head for my boyfriend's Christmas gift. He executed, conquered and succeeded what I needed to be done! My boyfriend is an officer and he wanted to keep using his Louis Vuitton wallet with his badge, but LV doesn't make custom badge wallets... nor badge holders. So this is where my creative juices started to flow. I pulled a couple of designs from the internet, went to LV to check out the wallets. I scoped out Google for leather shops that make custom pieces. I called the leather man, and they referred me to AJ - who works with custom orders. The same day I headed over to the leather man, and noticed that this wasn't your average leather shop. Definitely a sex shop and it definitely has the vibe where gaymen come in and look for toys to play with. Hey! That's fine by me, I don't care. I thought the items they had in there were cool and AJ was a sweetheart. Talking to me, and showing me the different types of leather he works with. He came up with a few sketches, and then proceeded to show me how he will make it happen with the leather. He even measured the wallet, and made sure that the badge holder will fit. In like a couple of days, my custom order was ready - $40 and comes with warranty if any thing happens to it! It fit perfectly in the LV wallet & had a nice look to it also. It's a hardcore gay male leather shop. So if you do have a girl, like me, make sure they're custom making everything for her smaller body frame/wrists. This is the only draw back and if you don't immediately realize where you are when you walk into the store (a male space) your retarded. I love this store. We have a pair of suspension cuffs, a harness, a flogger, a crop, and a vest from here. The harness, although not made for suspension, was able to handle it which I think says a lot.
