My absolute favorite restaurant in the area. Book ahead as it's almost impossible to get a table. Fabulous atmosphere and even better food.

The service started out great but then we had to wait a half hour for our food. It was disappointing because the restaurant wasn't even crowded at 5:45. I felt like they didn't start preparing our main courses until I approached the manager about the delay. When it arrived my fish was slightly warmer than cold. Very nice presentation but overpriced for what was delivered. We were charged $14 the a bowl of cauliflower soup! And the special was $38 Mahi Mahi which was also more that I expected. For the long wait time I figured the manager would have at least taken care of our drinks or acknowledged the long wait. read more

The best restaurant experience in the area and as good as you will find anywhere. The menu changes with the season and is wide ranging and creative. In addition there are a good number of nightly specials which indicates how much chef Johannes constantly aims to please... and he does . The plates are beautifully presented and taste incredible. There are small plates as well as entrees. The deserts are outstanding . The atmosphere in the library is unique and the theme is even part of the bill presentation as it comes in a library book . The service makes you feel special. Nothing is cheap, but it is all well done and worthwhile. read more

The food and service were outstanding! The restaurant was very friendly and prompt in our seating. (Table of six) We started with the lobster tail lollipops and then I had the nightly fish for dinner. Terrific! Equally or better than the incredible food (drinks and wine) was the fantastic service. We were a little anxious as we knew there was a huge party in the restaurant this evening. The menu, with its German leanings, drew us along with the chance to sit at the kitchen bar. Need not have worried! GPS doesn't work too good up here; we made a wrong turn. Called the restaurant and the young lady stayed on the phone with me as we came down the road. Genuine smiles greeted us. Perfect cocktails. Amazing service. Fireplace made it cozy. The lighting just bright enough I could actually see while still creating a soft atmosphere. We ordered so many items and they were all delicious. Pretzel was devoured. My quail and polenta were perfectly prepared. The fall menu was not heavy; a relief as so many are. Didn't take enough photos however we agree that this would be worth driving back from Charleston for each change of season menu! We signed our book and look forward to the next time! read more

My wife and I approached this venue knowing only reviews and with some apprehension. Could it match the reviews. Everything about the evening was wonderful. This place is our new favorite!! We tried it right before the holidays and enjoyed it so much we try to come back every week we are in town! The whimsical experience starts when you walk up to the front door and see the cute, antique tractor and the gorgeous old building that is well maintained. You are greeted by Liz who is like a bucket of sunshine pouring her love for her job and her positive attitude all over you. The bar area is gorgeous and bright, but we prefer the cozy back room as it's a bit more private. Both rooms have a roaring fireplace and they always decorate for the current season. Last night we enjoyed an early Valentine's dinner with rose petal covered tables, live roses everywhere and candy treats like chocolate kisses and candy hearts. The quail schnitzel small plate is a must-have for us. We each get one now as it's too delicious to share. There is nothing like it! Try it!! We often share a fish entree because it's always fresh, unique and created with an artisan love that jumps off the plate, but their are beef, chicken, pork and vegan options, too! The quality of their ingredients shows in every dish. Real food is all you get at The Library! The wait staff is delightful. Each and every person is happy to see us and makes a point to come over to say hello. This is clearly an establishment that trains and treats their staff well, as they are all excited to be there! The croissant bread pudding is literally "to die for", but all the deserts are fabulous! Our evening ended with Liz literally running to open the door for us and thank us for coming! We immediately booked a table for next Saturday night! While we could visit a great restaurant that's 10 minutes away, we drive 35 minutes to The Library because it is 5 star in every category. What an unexpected treat!! We just purchased a vacation home in the area an looked up restaurants on yelp etc...... We are so very excited to have found Johanne's place. He and his wife Liz have created one of THE most incredible environments you can imagine. The food is OUT of this world. Sit in the expansive (yet cozy) bar area at a high top and watch Johannes inspect very plate that comes out from the kitchen.... This is a site to behold in, and of itself. The quality of food and care he puts into every plate is messmerizing. The energy, art, decor, lighting etc..... creates a dining experience like no other. We prefer the bar area (IF you could call it that - sure does not feel like that based on the large handcrafted tables and proximity to the open kitchen) If you choose this area, ask for Savanah or her sister Farah, their hand crafted cocktails, knowledge of wine and personal attention will amaze you (as it has us, every time). Floating about the establishment (as if you were at a dinner party at her home) is Liz, Johanne's wife. Energy, authenticity and genuine niceness is her calling card. I cant imagine what the market cap would be if this team and process could be replicated and scaled across the US. Probably impossible because Liz, Johannes and crew, MAKE this place. This was our second time at the library. The hostess was as lovely and warm as she was the first time. The food, again, was very mediocre. We were a party of 4 and started with the lobster and shrimp risotto and the bruschetta, both were okay but nothing I would order again. The kitchen ran out of one of the "specials" at 7:15. I can't eat onions so always ask to be certain when I order. When my Bronzino arrived it had onions, no problem they would take back and remake. I was brought the same price of fish with the sauce, veggies, shrimp and onions scrapped off. I salted to add some taste. We all agreed we didn't need to ever go back. there are fantastic restaurants in the area and this is not one. read more

This is a MUST GO place to eat! Beautiful food, thoughtfully prepared and presented. Every bit a joy. My spouse had corn, lobster and haddock chowder which was a glorious combination of flavors. Not overly "creamy", but brothy and slightly creamy and buttery. Fabulous. He then had the Veal Schnitzel special which was served over spaetzle and greens. Perfect ly prepared and portioned. I had the whiskey braised lobster with risotto with acorn squash, melted Brie and Georgia shrimp "small plate." Again- perfect portion, perfect flavors, lots of seafood. Our server, Erin, was helpful and delightful. We ate on the patio and watched a pink sky as the sun set. Chef Johannes came to our table and chatted-was nice to be able to compliment him and his staff in person. We were too full for dessert! Very impressed with Library K&C! We sat at the kitchen high top, which was an experience in and of itself - getting to see all of amazing food be prepared really showcased their dedication to good food! We appreciated their combination of both small, tapas type plates and entree plates. While the small plates were a little overpriced, the entree plates were well portioned and priced. Also has a great variety, from seafood to meats to vegan options. Make sure to try their iron-skillet cookie for dessert - fantastic!! read more

Had the worst experience tonight at The Library. We made the reservation over a month in advance and when we arrived they tried to seat us outside under a tent in weather threatening rain. When we said that was not acceptable they sat us in a tiny private room with two large parties ( we were a party of 4). We asked to be seated in the main dining room where we have always been seated and were told they had nothing. The noise level in our room was excessive and miserable. The drinks were ridiculously over priced ($20 ) each for grey goose martinis. Lump Crab cake appetizer was awful and had virtually no crab - mostly all filler. Waiter was extremely slow and disorganized- our chili cornbread appetizer was served with our entrees. The Vahlrona chocolate bread pudding was $18 and was supposed to have praline sauce which we could not find! The pork ribeye was really good but could not make up for everything else. This has always been a must for our yearly visit to the area but no more!!! read more

I wish I could translate into words our amazing experience at the Library Kitchen&Bar. Prior to our trip I had read many wonderful reviews about this restaurant, so I booked our dinner weeks in advance and we were looking forward to our dining experience. We were travelling from Orlando to Sapphire (just for one night) and trusted the GPS ETA. Well, driving on the curvy mountain roads was no joke and we realized that we were going to be late. I called the restaurant and was able to move the reservation to 7:30 pm, the last opportunity. By 7 pm, we were exhausted and thought we were never going to make it. I called one more time and said we were still driving and would be 15 minutes late. We finally got there...tired and not looking our best as planned. The staff was wonderful and received us with so much care and attention. The restaurant is beautiful, fresh, tastefully decorated with contemporary art and interesting books. And the food!!! The food was absolutely amazing. Totally lived to our expectations and effort to get there. Chef Johannes gave us personalized attention and we could feel his love, attention to details and pride to offer the best culinary experience to each client. I could go on and on describing each amazing dish we savored. All delicious, refined and creative. Great food, great space. Went with some out of town friends from DC. We all really enjoyed ourselves except for the wait staff. Our waitress kept pushing and pushing for the up sale. Constantly pushing dishes. Poured wine from one guest bottle into my wife's glass that wasn't the same wine. It felt like she hoping we would get another bottle out of us. As someone who was sent to the area for work, I had no idea that this gem of a place existed! First off, any place with a "kitchen bar" rocks, but combine that with interactive chefs and a farm-to-table menu and a great wine list and I've found nirvana. We met the chef/owner of this unique restaurant on our recent trip to Cashiers. Unfortunately we arrived on the 2 days they were closed. However we were thrilled when he invited us in for a look see. He shared history of the restaurant which continued on to a wonderful conversation. On departing he gave us a couple generous samples from his menu to take home. So wonderful! The single greatest dining experience I've ever had. My husband and I went with my parents while in town, and we were blown away by the food, service, and attention given by our server Donna, head chef Johannes Klapdohr, and the manager Brian. Donna was by far, the best server I've ever had. She knew the dishes like the back of her hand, joked with us, was so relaxed, so fun, and gave us recommendations for what we could do in the area tomorrow. My wife set up a birthday dinner for me at this restaurant. As we arrived the host, Bryan, knew my name as we entered the front door! As we arrived at a choice table, a card was waiting with a signature from all the staff members working that evening - nice touch! The food is delicious and worth every nickel. Be sure to order the lobster lollipop appetizer. Chef Johannes and his bride, Liz, were warm and engaging, throughout, making the evening spectacular. After the meal Liz brought out a candlelit dessert and a rose for my bride. Overall, this a restaurant you don't want to pass up if you live in Sapphire/Cashiers or are just visiting, as we were. We wanted to try the Library and Bar because it is under new management since January 2017. We used to come here years ago when it was basically a bar. We started with the Clemson blue cheese dip with the homemade chips. Pretty mediocre. Also had the lobster bisque which was a special for the night. It was OK. Served lukewarm and needed salt. My husband had the risotto and it was tasty. A small portion but it was rich so a good choice. I had the duck and it was very good, BUT it was served with a "quinoa galette" which was Not Good. Tasteless and very dry. I really didn't get the concept of duck served with a quinoa "pancake" thing?? Anyway, our server was very sweet and attentive but this place is trying to be too avant-garde. People want regular food that tastes great-not micro herbs and peas in every stage of life from the sprout to the actual pea??? Won't be back. read more
