I'll start by saying that we have a very high bar to liking a restaurant. And we loved this one! We've been vacationing in the Sapphire area for years and have been wanting to go to The Library, but it never really worked out until now. We were here for my birthday, so it was a perfect occasion. The environment is very inviting - spacious, high ceilings, well appointed. I love that the tables aren't cramped together. You have room around you. Very comfortable. I loved the decor with the books and the art. Service and food were impeccable too! We are pescatarian so there were really just 2 dishes we could order - I got the vegetarian grain bowl and my husband got the trout. But first we got this insanely glorious spinach salad with goat cheese and pears that was to die for! The main courses were delicious and beautiful,y arranged. For desert we got the Portuguese pastries which had the birthday decoration. And the waiter brought me a beautiful pink rose! Absolutely loved it! Just a couple of words of caution - they don't serve bread. You can order corn bread for $5 but it's 4 tiny thin pieces (size of a cracker). Also, they charge 2.5% for card payments which I didn't think was fair for this type of establishment where two people really can't dine for less than $200. An absolutely marvelous culinary experience. This place is spectacular. Spent the night at the kitchen bar (couldn't recommend more) and was in awe at the work of the head chef and his team, particularly Caden and Luis. all of the workers there enjoy themselves and take pride in every aspect of the restaurant and it shows. It was so loud I couldn't hear my dining companion across from me. And the bigger tables were even louder as they needed to shout to one another to be heard, which made it even louder Was honestly relieved to leave. Cocktails seemed a bit watered down. The Grey Goose cosmo tasted mostly of cranberry and soda. The food was just okay. Watching other diners who ordered the same meal, portion size is very inconsistent. The service was fine. My wife and I come to the mountains as frequently as we can. As we live in Ohio we try to get to the area once a quarter. What is a non-negotiable for each trip is a visit to The Library. We had a fantastic meal here last night in a large group where I think everyone was happy. The Library is hip, family-friend, cozy, and delicious. You should expect to pay high-end prices for high-end food that's truly worth it. Our group got the private room and it felt like a special occasion with the ambience of the place. Our server, originally from Bulgaria, was super friendly, and the other hostesses were really sweet with the kids and getting them some cool paper hats that they could color. We share the special broccoli soup with scallops and lobster and it was so creamy and good. We also tried the pork tenderloin with grits and mustard greens and gobbled that up too. The meat was the perfect tenderness and the sauce was uniquely good. Our little one had the papperdal butter pasta and Parmesan and it was fairly priced. Went here for date night with my boyfriend on the last day of our vacation. Great location with easy parking. Very cute place with eccentric art and decor. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS and drinks as well! Our waitress was Marina- she went above and beyond to ensure we were happy and taken care of throughout our stay. Stopped here for dinner on a Friday night early (5ish) We didn't have reservations (have heard it was reservation only), but were greeted warmly and sat without an issue. It is very nice inside and a little more upscale than where we'd usually go with our 3yr old but they were very sweet with her and provided coloring and small games. The menu was extensive but thoughtful with a variety of different dishes. We started with the cornbread and popcorn. They were good starters and we quickly gobbled them up. We had the lamb meatballs and risotto for small plates. Both were delicious, the risotto was a favorite- very creamy and great lobster and shrimp inside. The meatballs were good, do wish there were a little more than the 4 provided. The pecan crusted chicken as a main was good, generous portion and the Brussels and mash were nice additions. Overall highly recommend, it is a bit on the pricey side but was well worth it. There is also a small charge for using a credit card, but I wouldn't let that keep you from enjoying. read more

Most of the experience was decent but some issues with service and a couple food dishes were not up to par for the class of restaurant this place advertises to be. 15 of us came here at the end of a week long vacation to have a good meal together. The restaurant put us all in a side room but instead of having a large square or T-shaped table for us all to talk together at, they split us up into 2 tables with 2 different waiters. Not a good family meal situation, that was then made more annoying when both waiters decided to tell each table the specials at the same time in the isolated room. Both tables had more than one person order the lamb entree but the restaurant ran out of them. Instead of telling the whole group about the issue, the waiters decided to make one table replace their lamb dishes but not the other. It wasn't fun having one half of the group rave about the lamb to the other half and not know that the others got blocked out from that dish. The grouper special was a horrible piece of fish, and if it actually was grouper, it was old and had been frozen perhaps a few times....not sure why this was even being sold as a special at a price tag of forty five dollars. They did come back and replace the dish with another one once hearing the complaint. Nine dollars for 2 small pieces of bread (really small) sprinkled with honey, goat cheese, and onions seemed a bit off too. Food came out to each table at different times too, so one table was done and the second table felt pressure to not order dessert because the first table wanted to go. Overall food was ok for most - and only the few that got lamb were ones that really thought their food was great. The few issues listed above were really the issues we experienced and I couldn't see myself recommending this place to others because of poor service decisions and a really bad quality special (grouper) that was being promoted. read more

Wish I could give six stars. Celebrated our 10th anniversary here and they made it memorable. Dinners were perfectly prepared. Started by splitting the small plate of quail breast....very delicious. After that they brought us a complementary raspberry sorbet with tiny red peppercorns sitting in a small bed of vodka with a golden leaf of chocolate that was incredible. She had the fresh flounder from Virginia and I had the veal schnitzel with red cabbage. The best veal schnitzel and red cabbage I have ever had, considering my mom and dad served German food a lot due to being stationed in Germany for the Airforce back in the 1950's. Very attentive waitress Jennifer, and hostess Liz (who gave us a grand tour of the art on display after our meal). Awesome setting and ambiance for a nice exceptional dinner celebration. This was a treat! The staff is very friendly and make you feel like they have known you forever. The food is very good and nicely presented. They took the kids to the kitchen to watch the chief cook, they even got hats! We had no small children but they came by our table on their way to the kitchen, which is open to see. Very clean! I thought that I had written a review last year when we came here. As I looked back I obviously was incorrect. I highly recommend going to the Library. The food is very seasonal. Our first visit you will see what we had...just check the photos. Since I realized this mishap....I knew I had to write. The LKB is legit. The food...amazing, the drinks...intoxicating, service....spectacular. However there is one force to be left to the end...Liz. Liz is not only the best front of the house person I've encountered...Liz might be the sweetest person in history, we take out young daughter on most trips. Having been exactly one year from out last visit to LKB, Liz and I made eye contact as she came walking from the kitchen area towards our table...and she immediately recognized us and went directly for our daughter Erin. Erin once again fell immediately attached to "Aunty Liz"! She is the definition of customer service. Her presence is what makes LKB a successful operation. Chef Johan might be good/great/genius at what he does, however...I told him tonight that his wife; Liz, is what makes everyone feel like they are at your family's house. The food is 5 stars! But I don't believe we will be back due to the incredibly offensive artwork displayed around the restaurant. As an artist myself, I appreciate artists expressing their voice and opinions through art, but this crossed the line. The restaurant itself is newly renovated and tasteful but the artwork screams anger/darkness. Keep the offensive artwork in your home/gallery, not in a family/fine dining restaurant. read more

On a short visit to the Sapphire Valley area, we ate here twice; the food and service were excellent on both visits. We loved the small plates concept as it allowed us to try several different items each time. The bread pudding dessert is so good, we got it both times. This was by far one of our favorite dining experiences in North Carolina! We didn't have a reservation and they were booked, however Liz was able to help accommodate us, which meant so much, especially given we had two young kids and it was pouring outside. I loved the decor and vibe, but was worried it might not be suitable for kids, however they had a great kids menu, and everyone interacted so sweetly with them, even bringing toys to the table to help keep them busy. Amanda served us and was also very attentive and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious (salad, short ribs, lobster risotto, and trout). Food, drinks, service was all 10/10! Our sweet waitress was attentive and knew the menu well. It was a busy night but we never felt overlooked. I had the special soup- a mushroom soup and it was delish and then the burrata salad. Also ordered the trout entree and it was so-so, no flavor or sauce! After our waiter finally came by to check on us, we complained and he said, "oh" and took plates away. To start we asked the waitress if we could sit in the other room and the hostess literally had a rude and loud comment that we could hear. Needs to control her mouth around customers. It made us and the waitress very uncomfortable. We didn't want to be a bother since the waitress was so sweet so we just said we stayed were we were. Little over priced for the quality of food. Soft shell crab tasted like it was deep fried not a nice lightly crusted cornmeal crust, no flavor but of oil. For 58.00 soft shell crab should have been prepared better. Cashiers-Highlands has no shortage of good restaurants but The Library was by far my favorite dining experience. If you enjoy trying new recipes based on the seasons best, this is the place for you. It is pricey, but worth it. The menu consists of Snacks, Small Plates and Main Plates. My boyfriend and I opted to share two Snacks and two Small Plates so we could try more things on the menu. We started with Ranch Flavored Pork Cracklings, Pickled Watermelon Rinds. Pork Cracklings were average but Pickled Watermelon was surprisingly good. Our next snack was Maine Lobster Tail Lolli Pops with Jack Daniels-Honey Glace. This was OUTSTANDING!! Loved this. Next was Arancini Fritters of Muscovy Duck Confit and Local Mushrooms, San Marzano Tomato Aioli, Blood Orange Vincotto Reduction, also a great combination of flavors. And finally, Sea Scallops Casserole, Ricotta Gnocchi, Summer Vegetables, Porcini Mushroom and Pino Grigio Sauce, Gruyere -Herb Crust. Scallops melted in your mouth. I'd be remiss if I didn't also highlight our experience sitting at the bar. They serve craft cocktails but the bartender is also encouraged to create new drinks using fresh ingredients. If you get anything with mint, the mint is picked from the restaurant's garden. I had a cocktail made with fresh watermelon juice that the bartender created that day. Delicious! I'm VERY impressed with everything about The Library. Firstly, the ladies greeting folks at the front door were gracious and welcoming. They set a fantastic tone for the whole evening. The interior of the restaurant was fresh, inspiring, and harkened back to their "speakeasy Library past". So cool. Sydney was our server. She was a lovely presence throughout the whole meal. She had sensational recommendations, a thorough knowledge of the menu, and warm/kind disposition. It made the experience all the better.
