While visiting the low country, I was on the lookout for seafood and I found it at Charleston Crab House! The carb house is located off Folly Road and sits next to Wappoo Creek. There is plenty of parking, indoor seating, and even outdoor deck seating. My table on the deck had a beautiful view of Wappoo Creek. We even got to watch the drawbridge go up for a passing boat! Now to the good part, the food! My table ordered hushpuppies as an appetizer and they are DELICIOUS! We ordered sea scallops and grilled redfish entree. Both were full of flavor. Great hospitality from the host -- truly the highlight of the experience. Unfortunately, the food didn't match. The waitress was just okay, but the bigger issue was the quality of the dishes. We ordered calamari, fried green tomatoes, and mussels everything tasted like standard frozen, pre-prepared food. The mussels were the best of the group, mainly because of the sauce, which had decent flavor. For entrées, the redfish was overcooked and covered in a heavy sauce with no clear flavor. The fried flounder had almost no seasoning which is surprising for fried fish. The cheese grits were disappointing, with cheese that wasn't even fully melted, and the collard greens were overly heavy with pork fat. Drinks were watered down. Overall, aside from the welcoming host, the experience fell flat. I'd skip this one. read more

Very friendly staff I was torn between the crab cakes the red fish or the special which was a low country gumbo ask the advice of my waitress and it was a chilly day she recommended the special and oh my was it tasty. Low country gumbo the gravy sauce was nice the shrimp work excellent tender and perfectly cooked and the andoui was perfectly spiced. Nice price point at $27 the nice size portion too not too much not too little I was able to finish it all but I was definitely pleasantly for when done. I highly recommend stopping in here I had a late lunch about 2:00 and they could see still folks left over from lunch and others just enjoying and we really afternoon at the bar. read more

While visiting Charleston we took my mom here for her birthday dinner. She LOVES seafood. We had a party of seven and luckily were able to get a reservation online. When we arrive, we were seated quickly and I noticed how beautiful the restaurant and the view was. Our waitress was so sweet and patient as we had three young children with us. She answered any questions we had about the menu and put in our appetizer orders giving us more time to look over the menu. I didn't get a photo but the bacon wrapped shrimp easily my favorite thing on the menu. The stuffed mushrooms were pretty good. My mom loved her seafood platter, and I really enjoyed my steak. While staying in Hilton Head, I drove two hours to Charleston to visit my cousin. She made reservations for lunch at the Crab House. They have a dock out back on the water with a fish cleaning station. The Crab House will cook what you catch as long as you clean your fish. My cousin and her husband ordered an appetizer of the Coconut Shrimp. Then they split an order of the Shrimp Linguini from the Specials Menu. I ordered the Shrimp-Po Boy that came with Waffle Fries. My sandwich was excellent. The shrimp were big and plentiful. At least three shrimp fell out of the sandwich and there was still enough for the sandwich to have a shrimp in every bite. They enjoyed their linguini just as much as I enjoyed my sandwich. There were plenty of parking spots available. My mom was in town and I wanted to take her somewhere waterfront. The views here did not disappoint! Unfortunately, the food did. I ordered the pasta seafood special and it was missing any flavor. I felt like they did not use any seasonings on this pasta dish. After a bit of doctoring with salt and pepper it did give it a little bit of flavor and made it more edible. My mom got the crab steam pot and was very excited to get some fresh seafood that she is not from the Charleston area. It was not the experience that she thought it would be. The crab was not local to the East Coast and was very hard to come out of the shells. There were not enough napkins given to us for the amount of butter that were on the crab legs. The only saving grace was the peanut butter pie for dessert! If you come here just for the views and the peanut butter pie, it'll be worth it. read more

When we come to Charleston, if we have only one night to eat out, we always choose Charleston Crab House. There is one downtown Charleston, but we always eat at the one on Wappoo Creek on James Island. It sits on the edge of the Wappoo, almost tucked right under the draw bridge. Our server today was Hannah and she was outstanding. We started with the crab dip appetizer which is always good and is enough for several to share. My husband ordered fried shrimp and I had the grilled trio which comes with shrimp, scallops, and red fish. Several sides are offered, and I chose grits and collards. I am, afterall, a Southern girl. My husband really enjoyed his shrimp and my food was spectacular! In fact, I did something I have never done in my life. I asked to speak to the person who had cooked my food. Hannah brought him out promptly, his name is Avery. I thanked him for my food which was SO very good, and he grinned from ear to ear. He really appreciated me saying so, and his colleagues clapped for him as he went back into the kitchen. I'm not kidding!!! If you go to the area, and don't get this meal, you are cheating yourself! Although we were both full, we ordered dessert. My husband had the chocolate cake which was huge and (he said) delicious. I enjoyed Charleston Crab House with my family recently. If you order any of their crab or seafood boils, be ready to get a little bit messy in pursuit of the perfect piece of crab. It was an enjoyable experience, but I found the size of the meals quite expensive for what you're getting. I had one of the platters, and the side of crab they gave me was reasonable, but the sides were pretty small. I was also not the biggest fan of the flavor profiles in the sides; apart from salt and butter, there wasn't much going on. However, the seafood was all seasoned perfectly. There was plenty of parking in this location, and we didn't really have to wait at all to be seated. Food came out quickly, and our server was pretty polite as well. Unimpressed, underwhelmed, cheated WHY: I'm visiting Charleston, and my friend grew up in the area. She wanted me to see the bridge. I saw the bridge. MENU: The server told me to get the Grilled Seafood Trio as I could get the grits instead of the rice that was NOT GF. Good move, because she talked me out of the Seafood A La Wappoo that was the same thing, but the pasta could not be substituted. The Trio was 30, and the pasta was 25. Is it the same thing, 15yo server with an attitude, is it???? THE ORDER So the "red fish" was overcooked cheap flounder! The shrimp and scallops were ok. The tiny bowl of grits (vs non GF rice) were ok. The :veges" were a tiny bowl of canned green beans. Seriously!??? The plate had no cocktail sauce,, no tartar sauce, no lemon, no butter! . Nothing! I asked for lemon, and the server screwed up her face and seemed insulted. THE COST Did anyone else notice the tablet they are using for checkout now gives you 18%, 22%, 25%, 30% TIP options? They just shame.you now to tip high. No time of your own to assess anything. So for a total of 40$, THIS PLACE IS A JOKE! It used to be a 40$ meal meant something, and you definitely had something left over to take home! THE FAME: Hey, all those famous people on the wall came for the river and bridge, to be seen.
