We've stayed at the Hampton Inn in Colchester several times and often go to the iconic Lighthouse Restaurant for lunch or dinner, depending on when we arrive after the 6 hour drive from Long Island and always find the food consistently good. So I was here back on June 18, 2025. I was staying at the hotel next door and was looking for a good place for dinner after a long day at work. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this restaurant. The hostess greeted me as soon as I entered and was friendly and immediately took me to my table. It wasn't too busy at this time and there were 4 other tables of patrons seated. I waited about 10 minutes for a waitress to finally greet me and she told me that she would be right with me. After taking my drink order and returning with my drink, she took my order. I decided to get the fried Brussels sprouts, 14 oz grilled ribeye steak, medium rare, with rice pilaf and zucchini. First thing I noticed when I got the Brussels sprouts was that it was just completely smothered and covered with the sauce that was made of maple syrup, bacon, caramelized onions, candied almonds with a honey gochujang drizzle. Unfortunately, my first bite was pretty bad. The sprouts were totally withered and tasted burnt and most likely spent too long in the frying oil. Multiple bites later, I was still not impressed. I felt like the sauce was way too heavy and not tasty at all. It was just too much of everything. I really wanted this to be awesome as I love Brussels sprouts. So, I probably had only 3 bites of this appetizer and then pushed it aside. Next was my ribeye steak. I was hoping that it would be better than the appetizer, but I figured that it couldn't be worse, right? Well, I was wrong. The rice pilaf was ice cold and had no taste to it at all. The same could be said for the zucchini. It was cold and had no taste to it at all. So now onto what should be the star of the show, the ribeye steak. I really can't say anything good about this. On the outside, the ribeye seemed to be overcooked. When I cut into the ribeye, it was actually rare and undercooked. I don't ever order my steaks rare, but in this situation, I didn't send the steak back. I don't ever send my food back as I used to be a waiter and I just don't even want to go there. I did cut a piece and courageously took a bite. It was definitely the worst steak that I have ever bit into. It had this weird moldy smell to it, the texture was rubbery, and it also tasted like there was bad freezer burn to it. It did not taste fresh. I spit that piece out and cut in to the other side of the steak to see if it was any better, and it most definitely was not better. I then just put my knife and fork down and decided I did not want any more and did not want to risk an upset stomach. When the waitress came back, she noticed that I pushed the plate away and asked if I did not like the steak? I told her all of the issues with it and she offered to take it back and get me another one. I told her that would be okay, just please bring me a check. I said that the cook should really sample the untouched part of the steak and they should be able to tell immediately that the steak was bad. She offered to remove the charge for the steak but I told her to please don't do that. Work was paying for my dinner and I don't like sending food back to the kitchen and I just wanted to pay my bill and leave. She came back and did discount the bill and after I continued to say just charge me full price, she said no. She couldn't in good conscience do that. I felt bad for the waitress as she really was apologetic. I just wanted to pay the bill ASAP and leave. I went back to my hotel next door and grabbed a couple of snacks from the front desk and those would have to satisfy my hunger pangs. Overall, this dining experience was really disappointing and I think that management should take this as a learning experience and fix what's broken. Both food items ordered were terrible. I don't like giving 1 star reviews, but honestly, this was less than 1 star. Please fix this so that no one else experiences what I did. read more

The staff is very friendly and efficient. I've been there a few times since 2006. The food is generally very good. I got the mussels. They were okay. The sauce was too sweet one overpowered the mussels, which did not come easily out of the shells and a texture like frozen mussels. The quantity of mussels was more than most restaurants. I wish it was a wine, butter, garlic sauce. There was too much of the sweet sauce. The clam chowder was too cheesy. The salad bar was excellent. If it was possible to give a zero star I would Normally go to the Trapp lodge for Thanksgiving or do it at home. The Lighthouse was recommended and we unfortunately chose it. First off let me say it was hands down the worst most bland food I have ever paid for, I've had better Thanksgiving meals at my kids elementary school. The Service The service was slow, uniformed, and didn't serve the whole table at once. I requested Earl Grey tea and cream and sugar was brought a bin of all herbal tea, sugar substitute and the little gas station half and half's. The coffee that I requested to replace the tea was brown water made with some kind of unidentifiable stale dried out pre ground product that may or may not have had actual coffee in it. The Restaurant Carpets and booth were absolutely filthy cobwebs everywhere so it definitely wasn't a "today" type issue. The Food The salads themselves were not horrible although the tomatoes and cucumbers were not fresh the dressing on the other had was some kind of off the shelf food service mix of hate and preservatives The main course was an insult to Thanksgiving and food in general. The Meat both the Turkey and ham were under seasoned ( how do you under season ham) and so dry you pretty much needed a garden hose to gag either down. The dressing was just a wet mush of what may have been solid food at some point but had devolved into some kind of putty. The mashed potatoes were not creamy at all, under seasoned, and not uniformly mashed, the gravy tasted like a mix, the cranberry relish was just jelly scraped out of a can but the the green bean casserole was the absolute worst thing on the plate it had the consistency of mucus and around the same flavor profile. I don't know how the food is during a non holiday meal but this was a waste of money and time we brought 90% of our plates home and gave it to our chickens. Will not eat at this establishment again, wouldn't recommend this place to even republicans . read more

We had dinner there last night and it was quite slow, very few people. So we couldn't understand the 15 minutes it took to get our drinks then order food. I had the shrimp and scallop scampi. The seafood was delicious. Cooked perfectly, the scallops were huge and the shrimp tender and great. The pasta was bland and seeming to float in some type of flavored water. The garlic flavor was absent as well as any taste of butter. It did not coat the pasta at all and it dripped off pasta as it was picked up by my fork. My daughter had a steak which was not cooked correctly and it had way too much fat on it for being a fillet! This was just all around bad. We were greeted by no one and had to search for the hostess because they were only seating the bar area but there was no signage or any way for a customer to know that. We were seated in the bar area where there were 4 people at the bar and 1 other table. The other table was clearly family of the chef as he came out to talk to them several times. We ordered a chicken wrap (mostly cold prep) and a kid's burger which was about half an inch thick, meaning in a nearly empty restaurant this all should've taken about 8-10 minutes. Nobody ever came over to check in or explain what was taking so long and after the waitress finally dropped the food off she never once checked on us. You would think there would be enough awareness that this was terrible to at least quickly bring the check but even that took 15 minutes. Prime rib is not supposed to be well done and dry. My dad says his eggs were cold. My stepmother got pancakes she said we're fine, but her bacon was very overcooked. They didn't ask her how she liked it. Everyone who works here is very nice, but the service was very slow, and the food was really, really not great. Menu is very plain and basic.
