I was excited to hear The Lumberyard Pub had new owners due to a disappointing visit a few years ago. I decided to give it a shot last night for dinner and was extremely disappointed to see that the service is still not up to par, and the food was nothing to rave about. We had a server that came to our table only to take our drink/food orders(did not come to fill up our water glasses besides when we asked during ordering our food even though they were obviously empty for majority of our time at the Resturant) and we had to request our receipts after waiting for 15 minutes from a different server in the area. We were very pleased with the food, service and atmosphere after our trip to the Apple orchard. My Ruben was great with lots of meat, the onion rings were delicious and my husband's burger was legit. I finally got to actually eat at the Lumberyard Pub after missing the kitchen being open 3 other times. I ordered a Firehouse Burger with a side salad and a bourbon... The burger was not cooked to the temp I requested, under seasoned and seemed like a basic sysco burger. The salad was wilted and the bourbon was a pretty short pour for the price. What a rip off! I ordered the buffalo chicken wrap and there was pretty much nothing but iceberg lettuce in it. For $12, I expect more than lettuce. My wrap consisted of maybe half (small) chicken breast, cut into small pieces, barely coated in buffalo sauce and you could barely tell there was any blue cheese dressing on there. It was like the sauce and the dressing were an afterthought. There was also no celery whatsoever on my wrap. How about some cheese (Blue would be nice) or something other than basically lettuce for my wrap. Now, to address other reviewers that said they had problems with their service. While our table did not have a problem with it, I did notice other tables around us having them. read more

I'm currently a bartender here at the Lumberyard. Can't say enough about the ownership. All three families consist of some the nicest people I've ever met. There's a reason I drive from Minneapolis to Afton for work everyday, and it's because they always make me feel appreciated. This is my fourth restaurant that I've worked in in my short 24 years of life, and all I have to say that if anyone has ever had a bad experience, give it another chance. The restaurant is filled with cool history, 52 different beers to choose from, and the food is great with constant improvements by the week. I'm a huge foody, and I enjoy eating here every shift that I'm on. The Lumberyard is going to be a staple in this community, and it's only going to get better as time goes on. read more

We had dinner here last night. Patio is wonderful. I love the new chairs and with the work on the garden it is much more open. We tried the pretzels as an appetizer and they were pretty good. BF ordered one of the sandwiches with the plank fries and really liked it! I ordered the margarita flatbread. This was really tasty but different. Wine list and beer selection was vast! Only odd thing, we both ordered ice tea and were surprised that it was sweetened. Not typical in MN but it was tasty! The menu looked great and I love being able to sit outside and enjoy the weather. I think this place is going to be great for all the people out over the weekend on the St. Croix. read more

My wife and I went to the Lumberyard in Afton last night. We were seated outside on the patio and service was good. We were a bit shocked to learn that they'd "Upgraded" (Read reduced their menu by 1/3 overall in the last year) Their signature offering the Lumberyard Burger and the always popular Shrimp Tacos and Street Tacos have all been eliminated. Thus removing the whole reason we liked to go there. It's still a decent place to eat, but lower your expectations if you go. read more

My son and I were boating and stopped for a beer and appetizers around 3pm. We sat on the patio, one other table was taken. We had 2 wait staff walk by us on the way to the other table, three times, and never stopped to say we will be with you in a second, no water, no menus, no eye contact. I had earlier after waiting quite a while asked a waiter inside, with only one table with people, if I could have a menu, he said someone will come out and take you order, never happened, after the last time they walked past us from the other table, we just left. The people at the table appeared to be locals, and apologized for us not getting served, they saw everything. Clearly I will never go there again and will for sure will let people I know that live in that town what happened! read more

I miss the Philly sandwich. New menu is awful. The old menu may have been too large but they got rid of almost everything, and replaced it with a one pager full of appetizers and their take on staples. Ordered a Reuben, which I sent back, awful. Had them bring me a quesadilla (because who could screw that up?), which they put that ticket behind every other ticket in line, so I ate alone while my friend had already finished his meal. Good thing I personally liked the sauce they put on it, but if someone didn't they would be screwed as they squirted it all over them. The location is great, lots of outside seating to watch the cool cars roll through. The waitress was sweet. Bring back better food and your little gem might survive. read more

I love the lumberyard. The food is delicious and the beer selection and cocktails are awesome. I live an hour away from it but it is always worth the drive. The staff is friendly and they treat their customers very well. Some people complain about their food or drinks not coming out fast enough, but they don't have a large kitchen or bar and their employees are doing their best. Everyone is human, people make mistakes. If your food comes out 10 minutes later than you wanted it, you probably won't starve to death. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area. read more

Stopped in after a camping trip, got the Margarita flatbread and was NOT disappointed. It was super tasty and I was really glad I got it. Stopped to dine on their patio on a Tuesday afternoon. Very nice looking patio with shady and sunny areas. Waited at outdoor hostess station and no one came. I opened the door and from the foyer could see a server coming with her arms full of food so I held the door open for her and stayed in the foyer to ask if we seat ourselves. She noticed I had a small dog on a leash and snapped "you can't bring that dog in here!" I said I wasn't going to I only wanted to know if patio is seat yourself. She then repeated her comment despite the fact I hadn't moved. She then said we could seat ourselves. She arrived with menus a few minutes later and we ordered wraps. 35 min later still no food despite only 6 tables of patrons. We flagged her over and we asked how much longer. She said she just checked and said the chef didn't have our ticket. We asked if she turned it into him, she said yes, we asked why he didn't have it then. She said he must have lost it. We opted to leave. Server was an older woman long blonde braided pony tail. I'd avoid her if at all possible. read more

Meh. Ordered fish and chips, online menu states 3 pieces of fish, I got 2 very small, thin obviously not cod "strips" of overfried something. Fries were abundant and decent. Slaw was so saturated with vinegar I couldn't eat it. Wine was a short pour for $8. Waiter was prompt and pleasant. I'm a local. I've tried...3 times. Really tried to like it. Maybe if they didn't charge so much for frozen, deep fried, lackluster food, I wouldn't mind. However, the prices are a joke for what you get and I wouldn't want to pay more than $6 for what they have on the menu. Also, who pours a screw driver into a low-ball glass? And you'd think you should be able to see through it. Nope, just paying $6 for OJ. You'd think they would spend the money and the time to hire someone who can show them how to run a successful restaurant business that would outshine all the others in the valley - they have the money. Rode my motorcycle by this little pub many many times. Finally stopped in with the misses, This place is a true hidden gem. Had a local brew (Farm Girl) and an angus burger and fries. We like eating outdoors on a nice spring or summer evening. But the food is mediocre, and there is no service. You post your order at a self serve window and then wait for a food runner to deliver it to your table. Yesterday one member of our group never got her food at all, and when we tried to communicate that problem the response was a shoulder shrug and "oh well." Very chaotic service environment as though it was the help's first night or something. Our friend had made a reservation for 7, and when I arrived and mentioned that, the person asked repeatedly who I'd made the res with as if it was a broken rule or something. It was early so no problem snagging a table, but the website had said where to call to make a reservation. Add to that that the tips are included in the prices but not readily disclosed and you are left with a nice outdoor environment to spend time but chaos, lousy food and hidden tips, and it's a deal breaker for me. read more

Nice little cozy spot, off the beaten path. We were there on a Fri. night at 6:30, low key acoustic band playing Van Morrison tunes out on the patio. Walked up and sat right down, ordered in a couple minutes. Good craft beer and craft liquor selections. A lot of local. Burnt ends appetizer very tasty, although pork bites were slightly over done. Fish and chips was good, but batter-to-fish ratio way too high. Steak bites were amazing (melt in your mouth, completely steaky), on a bed of similarly amazing mashed potatoes, with a very tasty gravy. Would be a 5 for sure if there was about twice as much gravy. Service very good. Overall, very good. Will definitely go back, try other things. read more

We had lunch here on Mothers Day and were hoping for good things. To be fair, the restaurant has only been open for three weeks, so I set my expectations accordingly. The patio is lovely and the beer offerings extensive - the food, however, is hit or miss and the service is the worst we've ever experienced. Although the menu is varied (several hamburger options, three salads, a handful of appetizers, sandwiches and wings), it isn't extensive enough to be out of as many things as they were out of and we were a little disappointed that we twice had to come up with alternatives to menu selections we'd made. The wings were great, however the Spam sandwich was underdone and the two different burgers we tried, while done perfectly, had literally no taste - even with the "lumber sauce" (what tasted to us like a combination of thousand island and ranch dressings). Even a little seasoning before cooking would have made a huge difference! We had Karen as our server and all I can say is that she needs to pursue a different career! We were her only table, yet we waited 10-15 minutes between appearances - she wrote nothing down, had to come back three times to verify a drink order and then still brought the wrong thing. I asked for a glass of water - what I thought was a simple request. After waiting almost 15 minutes, she finally came out with my water, but stopped to clean a table that people were waiting on first. She left my water on that table and the people being seated there took it. Needless to say, I never got my water. The wait for her to bring our bill was another 10 minutes and after waiting another 10 minutes we determined she just wasn't coming back to pick up our credit card payment. Turns out, she was outside having a cigarette while we waited. I'm in the service industry, and this is something you just don't do!!!!! This place has a lot of potential but it still needs work both in food quality and definitely in service before we'd go back or recommend it to anyone we know. read more

We had dinner there on a Sunday night - it was beautiful outside and we sat on the patio. There was plenty of tables to be had, plenty of waitstaff, but the food was terribly slow in coming out. It took more than 30 minutes for us to get simple chicken tacos and a BBQ sandwich. One of the sites that we ordered was macaroni and cheese - it looked exactly like they had cooked up a box of Kraft dinner. Also to a group of young adults who were wondering why their food took over an hour. Maybe 12 people in the place. My boneless wings were lame, with bottled sauce dumped on them. The Lumberyard is the worst restaurant I've ever been to. I was there with a group of 5 people. After several tables that came in after my group did started receiving their food, we asked the waitress where are food was. She said they (the kitchen) lost your ticket. I asked what about the appetizer I ordered? Oh I forgot to put that in, do you still want it? I said no. My husband got up to pay the bill for drinks. Keep in my mind we each had one. He asked to speak to a manager. A young man behind the bar said there isn't one but I guess that's me. My husband began to ask what happened to our order that was taken one hour and twenty minutes ago. He said "Fuck You" I don't want your money. He then began yelling at my husband and screaming "Fuck You". He then came from behind the bar and got in his face. An older gentleman, the cook apologized. He stepped between this young man who was screaming at my husband to keep him away from him because he kept lungeing forward. We walked out of the restaurant as the young man continued to scream profanity. This place was awful!! I will never go there again. read more

Had a great meal on Sun 9/9/18 on a sunny patio umbrella table. The service was great and helpful. Split a Guak-burger and the Turkey BLT and both were cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic. The turkey blt has a real slice of turkey vs shaved turkey and it melted in our mouths! The burger is a 1/2 lb and just as we ordered it. We also enjoyed two refreshing tap beers followed by two very refreshing cocktails from the summer cocktail menu. All in all a great experience and will will be back and bring friends. I would go with 5 stars but the darn flies were a bit pesky but the staff were helpful in keeping them at bay. read more

We went on Mother's Day for dinner and all they had left was burgers and "shareables". It was expensive, The burgers tasted like a frozen greasy pattys. Mine was a Blue cheese burger with a slice of white cheese that didn't taste like blue cheese. Its pretty hard to screw up a burger if you buy 100% beef! The Asian slaw didn't have any flavor. That was the food, the service was terrible. One of the children got her food 15 minutes before the last. Everything came out one by one without apologies, except the waitress said she had bloody Mary running down her leg from being so busy earlier. Advice, people don't care they just want good service. I wouldn't recommend it. Great remodel but they need some experienced cooks and wait staff. read more
