Arrived at 6:15 for a 6:30 reservation had a nice drink at the bar. Got seated at 6:40 and somehow we were still waiting for food at 8:10 (we ordered shortly after drinks arrived)?!? There solution for our wait was to offer us soup or salad? This is not a place where you wait 90 minutes for food (other's around us were seated, served and gone in this time). I'm 70+ years old and have never walked out of a restaurant before getting my food, but we did tonight. Managements whole response was " we didn't lie to you" (not sure what they has to do with our EXTREMELY POOR EXPERIENCE)! What a shame. read more

First time there was on a Friday. Friends spoke highly of the food so we were excited. It was not a great experience. It was hot outside and the inside of the restaurant was way too hot. Almost like the AC wasn't on. Also, there were tons of black flies, landing on us, landing on the food. It was also really loud. Our server was practically shouting. Also lots of kids there. It was really beautiful inside. Unfortunately, the heat, flies, and inability to hear each other at our table really diminished our dinner. My friend was here from another country too, so it kind of sucked. Ordered prime rib and a ribeye. It was okay. The loaded baked potato was underwhelming. The green beans were delicious. First time visiting after passing it on our way home from William OBrian state park. Very nice ambiance- cabin feel with nice woodsy design. Cute decorated patio as well! I really wanted to like Sal's Angus Grill, but my visit was pretty disappointing. The wait time to get our food was much longer than expected, even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. When the food finally arrived, it didn't live up to the price -- my wife's steak was overcooked and lacked seasoning, my brisket sandwich tasted like something you get out of microwave, and the sides tasted like they'd been sitting out for a while. Service wasn't great either. Our server seemed rushed and hardly checked on us, and getting basic things like refills took far too long. For the cost, I expected a much better overall experience. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be returning anytime soon. read more

Came in for lunch. Didn't get food for almost an hour. I ordered the special of the month which was a chicken rice bowl. The black beans, corn and chicken were cold and out of a can. I was expecting some grilled chicken pieces but received about 2 tablespoons of canned chicken. Friend received sweet potato fries that she said were burned and not edible. First time. Was not sure what to expect as we are not familiar with the area and there is not much around! But when we arrived, we were immediately greeted and seated. Our server TRACY was so friendly: she gave us suggestions on food, joked with the kids, checked in regularly despite how BUSY it was. On top of the amazing service, the food was surprisingly good! We loved the blue cheese and their Cajun sauce! Wings were delicious! Wild rice soup approved! Large portions, and fresh salad! Mixed drinks came with shakers, AND we were served warm buns. The place was packed, but it didn't feel crowded. The atmosphere was the Friday night vibe we were definitely looking for. Our highlight still was our server Tracy. LOVED this place! Here for the first time after stopping at 2 Silo's Winery in Dellwood. Sat outside on a gorgeous night. 80's music was playing out on the patio. We ordered 2 Chopped Chef Salads, they were $16.95 EACH. Unfortunately the salads were small, only about the size of a side salad but served in a large shallow plate. The menu indicates they come with turkey and ham; mine had 1 cube of turkey and 1 cube of ham. The lettuce was less than 1" deep. So disappointing and pathetic! Our server was nice and brought out additional turkey and ham, but not lettuce. We couldn't help but think the kitchen misunderstood and sent out only small garden salads. It turned out to be very expensive side salads and we left hungry after paying $34 for salads!! We know better than to order salads at Sal's again! read more

Sal's is a family friendly place to go have a great dinner and hang out with family or friends. Not just bar food. Many of the cocktails come in the shaker so you get a lot to drink. It is in the country, so you can come via car, snowmobile, motorcycle or even your horse. read more

I ordered a hot beef sandwich and I asked for a side of gravy, the container they brought me was the size that you get coleslaw in it was that small and they charged me $1.50 that was insane so I refused it!!! I will not go back plus I ordered shot of Jameson's whiskey with coffee the shot was $7.00 (which wasn't bad) but the coffee was $2.75 the waitress should have told me the difference in price . Very nice restaurant with great food and excellent service. I had the 14 ounce prime rib with a baked potato and green beans. The prime rib was perfectly medium rare and expertly seasoned. I thought I'd do a two-part review of our last 4/ 5 visits to Sal's because there's just so much to say and go over in just one part. I'll cover Sal's itself and our Appetizer selections in this first part, and our Entrée items in part two. Sal's is just a great spot for fantastic food and drink with a fun, casual atmosphere in a rustic-type setting out in rural Withrow, MN. On any given nice Sat or Sun afternoon you are liable to see lots of pick-up trucks, autos, classic cars, Harley's, and even a horse or two parked in the lot at Sal's or tied-up out back at the hitchin' posts. It's a great crowd with a lot of fun and friendly people. Sam, the head honcho at Sal's, and his whole staff are phenomenal and do a great job making everyone feel welcome and well taken care of. They are really a great bunch for sure. And hey, if you're lucky you'll get to see the twice-daily train roll by out front. They usually come by Eastbound in the mid to late afternoon. Be sure to give a wave and raise a glass to the guys in the locomotive. As a retired railroad Engineer myself, I can tell you that a friendly wave is always appreciated by those guys. Now, on to the food..... On our last five visits to Sal's my friend and I have tried four different Apps to get our meal started with. On our first visit we ordered the Stuffed Portabella Mushroom Caps. If you are a mushroom lover, you're gonna love these. They are stuffed with a yummy blend of seasoned cheese(s) and Sal's homemade Italian sausage and then finished with a drizzle of balsamic glaze. They are super tasty, but also very, very rich and filling. Fyi.... On our next visit and also our most recent visit last night we had the Cock Bites. These are Blackened Chicken Chunks served over a bed of Sal's Onion Strips. They are served with sides of Ranch dressing and Gorgonzola gravy. The gravy is absolutely marvelous and is the perfect flavor compliment to the Blackened chicken seasoning. I highly recommend it for your dipping pleasure!!!! On another visit we tried the Angus Steak Bites. Like the Cock Bites they too are Blackened and served over Onion Strips. Unless you request otherwise they are served a perfect Medium-Rare and come with sides of Béarnaise sauce and creamy Horseradish sauce. Ours were served perfectly done, and since I'm not a huge Béarnaise fan I just went with the creamy Horseradish for dipping and it was fantastic. The perfect flavor compliment for the Beef and the seasoning on it. On one other visit we started our dinner with the Burnt Ends and Pieces appetizer. They are very flavorful pieces of BBQ Brisket served with a side of really tangy and yummy BBQ sauce. Nothing too fancy with these, pretty straightforward, but very tasty for sure. There are many more delicious-looking appetizers on the menu as well. Our next one to try is gonna be Sal's meatballs. Who doesn't love a good meatball, or two. Right!!??? In part two of my review of Sal's I will focus on our Entrée selections and hopefully upload a few pictures to go along with it. (Spoiler alert.... Sal's has some of the BEST Prime Rib around. They needed another server to help. Ours was friendly, but so busy we couldn't get her attention for a couple of issues. We had stuffed mushrooms and bull bites for appetizers. The mushrooms were barely warm. They must have been sitting waiting for the bull bites to get done because the steak bites were very hot and delicious. The onion straws under the bull bites were limp and not crisp. Two people had hot dagos that they liked, but the fries weren't very warm. One had the Philly sandwich and coleslaw. She said they both were very good. And two of us had the prime rib. It was done perfectly medium-rare. We wanted horseradish sauce, but they forgot to give that to us and couldn't get the server's attention. My green beans weren't very warm. Maybe the kitchen staff needs more help as well, so things would come out hot and not lukewarm. We were there on Wednesday, so it wasn't as busy as a weekend. It was disappointing because we've had much better food in the previous years. read more

The host said to expect a 20-25 minute wait. An hour and ten minutes later we were seated. The special was brisket burnt ends on Mac and cheese. That sounded good. Two of us ordered that. What we got was sliced polish sausage on Mac and cheese. The servers couldn't explain that and would not go check it out. Also, the Walleye sandwich was flavorless mush. read more

Our 1st time at Sal's, definitely worth the drive!! From the atmosphere to the food to the service all of it was a 5 star experience! I ordered the beer battered Shrimp outstanding!! The only thing I did not like was it was served on rice, I would have asked them not to do that as I did not care for rice, maybe put that in menu or let customers know so they have option of no rice. The hubby got the shrimp alfredo W/ veggies very good. Had the cock bites for an app they were over the top deliciou!!! Penny was our server she was awesome, super friendly, it has been forever since a server took the time to actually talk w/ us! She asked where we were from & thanked us for making the drive to eat at Sals....Wow!! Penny did an outstanding job of checking on us & serving us, we will definitely be back!! This is a fun neighborhood type of place. Come on Saturday for bingo but make reservations.

We were greeted warmly, made to feel like family. Our table of 6 had prime rib sandwich, walleye and pasta. All very good. Unexpected highlight for me was the green bean side. Someone in the kitchen is a very serious cook to turn those out. read more

Stopped Friday night around 7:00 and without reservations. We were taken to a table where we sat for 10 to 15 minutes without any service. People were coming in and being waited on immediately. I finally went to ask why, and a few minutes later were finally waited on. The chicken wild rice soup was so salty, I could not eat it, my partner said the cod was ok. With my Mom & Dad in town for a few days, they let us have a date night on Friday. We first stopped by Flat Earth Brewery to fill up a couple of Growlers and grab a sample of fresh brewed beer. One time that we were there, I saw a menu for Yarusso Brother's. Looking into it, under the daily specials, Friday had an All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry! Seeming that it's just around the corner from Flat Earth, we made a plan to do the two some day in the future. This ended up being that day! After ordering a couple drinks at Yarusso's, our server told us that the menu was wrong. They don't serve a Fish Fry on Friday. Only during Lent. Boo. So, with our hearts set on one, I pull out the trusty Yelp app to look over my bookmarks. One place we had marked was Sal's. I was told about this place from a long time friend who lives up in Hugo. We called him up to see if he had dinner plans & if he would like to join us. He did have plans, but said he lives right around the corner from Sal's & we should give him a call when we were done so we could try out his own fresh brewed beer. It's a little hobby he has. It sounded like a nice way to finish up the night! We plugged the address into the GPS & made our way up to Sal's Angus Grill. This place is smack dab in the middle of nowhere. The parking lot is a little tight to navigate & is hard to pass a car if they are on their way in/out. We squeezed into a spot. I snapped a couple photos of the place right away. It has a log cabin feel, but on a much larger scale. A patio outside had several tables occupied with one empty as we walked in. Being the gorgeous weekend weather we had, we asked the host station if we could sit outside. They gladly gave us the empty table. Menu's were already on the table outside & are presented as a newspaper. The back page had the drinks listed. Alyssa got a H2O while I indulged in a Flat Earth Porter on tap. After getting our drinks & browsing the menu, we set our minds up on our order. Alyssa went with one of the two Friday Night specials they offer. Prime Rib. I, of course, went with the other special. AYCE Fish Fry. Alyssa got a choice of sides & went with Garlic Baby Red Mashed Potatoes & Green Beans. Mine came automatically with French Fries & Coleslaw. After the server left, the mosquitoes started bothering us. Plus, the darn music was really loud outside. So much so, we were getting annoyed by it. I found our server and asked if we could move inside. It was such a non-issue for her. She grabbed up all our things & sat us right by a window. She was a delight. Inside the restaurant, it completes the Log Cabin feel. Taxidermy abound. Deer Antler Chandelier. Exposed wood logs. The whole 9 yards. We got a couple of warm rolls to start our meals off. It came with a sweet whipped butter & soft butter pats. The rolls with the sweet butter didn't work too well. But the soft butter pats made for an enjoyable bite. The roll were slightly garlicky. The sweet butter contrasted the flavors. Before we were done munching on our rolls, our suppers came. My supper came in a basket with a lot of thin cut French Fries, a large ramekin of colorful Coleslaw, & two pieces of Beer Batter Cod topped with more of the Coleslaw. I also got lemon & Tartar Sauce. I was confused by the Coleslaw on my Cod. I thought it to be a mistake or that some spilled out on them. This proved to be not true. It's the way they are served. Every re-order came the same way. Can't say I liked that too much. The Coleslaw was very one note. It has Bell Peppers mixed in & overpowers the flavor. I ended up scraping it off each piece. Lemon is all this Cod needs. The Tartar is the sweet pickle kind. I like mine with Dill mixed in. The shell is crispy & the batter just thick enough to where you could pick these pieces up with your hands. The Cod inside was moist & flakey. It's good Cod. The French Fries were hot, crispy, & seasoned with salt & pepper. What could be wrong with that? Nothing, I say. Alyssa's plate was massive. Large mound of Mashed. Huge pile of Green Beans. A slab of thick cut Prime Rib. She got a ramekin of Au Jus, too. Alyssa inquired about Horseradish & was asked if she would like raw or creamy. The Green Beans were done Szechwan style. Crisp & good flavor. The Mashed sound better than what they are. The star of the show was the Prime Rib. Woo Wee! Ten Derrrrr, baby. Mucho flavor. I wasn't joking when I said THICK cut. Over an Inch. Real nice bark crust. We got checked up on often & was asked about reorders each time. I got two pieces two times. Each piece was brought on it's own plate. Silly. Just put em on the same plate. Each reorder has it's own Tartar & lemon, too. Overkill. When I order two pieces, that doesn't mean I need two sauces & two plates. But what I would like is this dinner to be served on a plate rather than in a basket. When Sal's is charging $14.95 for this Fish Fry. Plate, please. The prices here are high. Across the board. BINGO! Visited Sal's on a recent weekend afternoon for some meat raffle and bingo fun. I'd never been before, but one of the people in our group had, so he made reservations. I would recommend this. The place is hopping for the afternoon activities. It's huge on the outside and they pack them in. I did not eat, just had a couple of beers and played bingo. I can tell you this, I more than likely would not eat because the service is not very good. By the time we got there some of our party had already ordered lunch. They commented on how trying to get the server to take your order was like pulling teeth. I agree. She was never around! We ended up going up to the bar a couple times just to get served. Now, on to the bingo. A pack of cards for all the games is $22. It seems as though most people who go for bingo, go every week. It seems to be a gathering spot for parties and get-togethers. It's super loud. People who are there don't want to pipe down when they are calling numbers. My recommendations for Sal's - it looks like it was either just built or remodeled, but either way, 2 stalls in the women's restroom just isn't enough, get more servers on Saturday afternoons, and something should be done about the acoustics. If there was another gathering for BINGO, I would go, but this is very far from my house, so it would never just pop in. read more

First off, I will admit the poor quality of the photo, I didn't have the good camera with me, and cleaned it up as well as I could. It's much more appealing looking up close and personal. Eileen and I went out to visit the parents over the weekend, partly to take a look at Mom's computer (stupid video card drivers broke), give them a demo of Wii Fit, and also to score a meal at Sal's. Having been up to Sal's a number of times before, I was certainly up for making the trip up to Stillwater. After a quick fix of driver updates, and laughing hysterically at us playing with the Wii Fit, and trying to see Dad balance, we headed up for a bite. Sal's has had a few different names over the 25 years my Parents have lived nearby. It was the Keystone Lounge for many years, a favorite place to go after little league and have a soda while the parents and coaches had a beer, and was no larger than an overgrown trailer home at that time. Over the years it's had a few names, and has been Sal's Angus Grill for the past few. It's had a major remodel and addition to give it substantially more seating, a larger bar area and a 'lodge' style decor inside, complete with large fireplace in the corner to warm the passing patrons on their snowmobiles. (They also have a heated service van outdoors to act as the 'smoking' section during the winter months, complete with music and tiki lights inside last I saw. Currently, the place attracts customers of every type, from sledders to families, to the regular crowd at the bar. It's as close to a 'small town' bar as I can see in the immediate area, that also has a great eatery. The menu is quite varied and more than I had expected for a restaurant that's kind of out in the sticks. They have an assortment of burgers, sandwiches, pastas, salads, ribs and apps that border on the gourmet side, such as bruschetta that is as good as any 5-star restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. They also have soups and lighter items if you choose. In the past, I've had the potato skins, bruschetta, nachos, buffalo chicken sandwich, etc and have been impressed with every meal. On this particular visit I went with the basic burger, with bacon and pepper jack cheese added, as I had an appetite for a big old burger. It is served up with american or regular french fries, both are excellent depending on your preference. My mom ordered a loaded potato, dad opted for the 'cock bites' off the app menu, which is essentially chopped up bites of chicken breast, with seasoning and flavor on them, but not breaded. They make an adequate meal for one, or split as an app. Eileen got a burger as well, and we both found them to be excellent. Cooked medium with a slight amount of pink in the middle, juicy and flavorful. They are served with lettuce, tomato and onion on a fresh and soft bun, but not too large to overtake the size of the patty. We all agreed that our meals were excellent, and Eileen and I both left a bit full, but agreed that the meal was too good to leave behind or save for a take-home box (that's what the gym is for afterall, no?) Our server, was on top of our table, ensuring we had drinks, checking on our food and overall seeing that we were happy with our meals. For a Sunday night, the place wasn't all that busy, and they appeared to have ample staff on hand to cover the crowd that was in the place. I didn't see our final bill, as my parents picked up the tab, but you can see the menu on line and estimate what your ticket would be. Most meals are between $9 and $13, unless you go with the ribs or steaks which start about $15 and go up. I can't say that I've been displeased with any of the items I've had at Sal's, and always am happy to get out and have a bite there. While it is a little drive North/West of Stillwater a little bit, near the newly re-opened Withrow Ballrom, it's certainly worth the trip out if you're looking for excellent food, and want something other than a chain quality experience. read more
